Mixed ionic and electronic conduction in Zr02-based solid electrolytes was studied. The effect of impurities and second-phase particles on the mixed conduction parameter, P,, was measured for different types of ZrOZ electrolytes. The performance of solid-state sensors incorporating ZrOZ electrolytes is sometimes limited by electronic conduction in ZrOZ, especially at temperatures >I800 K. Methods for eliminating or minimizing errors in measured emf due to electronically driven transport of oxygen anions are discussed. Examples include probes for monitoring oxygen content in liquid steel as well as the newly developed sulfur sensor based on a ZrOz(Ca0) + CaS electrolyte. The use of mixed conducting ZrOZ as a semipermeable membrane or chemically selective sieve for oxygen at high temperatures is discussed. Oxygen transport from liquid iron to CO + C& gas mixtures through a ZrOZ membrane driven by a chemical potential gradient, in the absence of electrical leads or imposed potentials, was experimentally observed.

The crystal structure, thennal expansion and electrical conductivity of the solid solutions YOgCao.2Fel-x MnxOJ+c5 (0 ~ x ~ 1.0) were investigated. All compositions had the GdFeOrtype orthorhombic perovskite structure with trace amounts of a second phase present in case of x = 0.8 and 1.0. The lattice parameters were detennined at room tempe'rature by using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). The pseudocubic lattice constant decreased with increasing x. The average I inear thermal expansion coefficient (anv) in the temperature range from 673 to 973 K showed negligible change with x up to x = 0.4. The thennal expansion curve for x = I had a slope approaching zero in the temperature range from 648 to 948 K. The calculated activation energy values for electrical conduction indicate that conduction occurs primarily by the small polaron hopping mechanism. The drastic drop in electrical conductivity for a small addition of Mn (0 ~ x ~ 0.2) is caused by the preferential fonnation of Mn4t ion~ (rather than Fe4 +) which act as carrier traps. This continues till the charge compensation for the divalent ions on the A-site is complete. The results indicate that with further increase in manganese content (beyond x =0.4) in the solid solutions, there is an increase in exc :::ss oxygen and consequently, a small increase in Mn'll il>I1~, which are charge compensated by the formation of cation vancancies.

Structure and phase transition of LaO1−xF1+2x, prepared by solid-state reaction of La2O3 and LaF3, was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry for both positive and negative values of the nonstoichiometric parameter x. The electrical conductivity was investigated as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure using AC impedance spectroscopy. Fluoride ion was identified as the migrating species in LaOF by coulometric titration and transport number determined by Tubandt technique and EMF measurements. Activation energy for conduction in LaOF was 58.5 (±0.8) kJ/mol. Conductivity increased with increasing fluorine concentration in the oxyfluoride phase, suggesting that interstitial fluoride ions are more mobile than vacancies. Although the values of ionic conductivity of cubic LaOF are lower, the oxygen partial pressure range for predominantly ionic conduction is larger than that for the commonly used stabilized-zirconia electrolytes. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the oxyfluoride is stable in atmospheres containing diatomic oxygen. However, the oxyfluoride phase can degrade with time at high temperatures in atmospheres containing water vapor, because of the higher stability of HF compared with H2O.

Hybrid inorganic-organic framework materials exhibit unique properties that can be advantageously tuned through choice of the inorganic and organic components and by control of the crystal structure. We present a new hydrothermally prepared 3D hybrid framework, [Mn(2-methylsuccinate)](n) (1), comprising alternating 2D manganese oxide sheets and isolated MnO(6) octahedra, pillared via syn, anti-syn carboxylates. Powder magnetic characterization shows that the compound is a homospin Mn(II) ferrimagnet below 2.4 K. The easy-axis is revealed by single-crystal magnetic susceptibility studies and a magnetic structure is proposed. Anisotropic elastic moduli and hardness, observed through nanoindentation on differing crystal facets, were correlated with specific structural features. Such measurements of anisotropy are not commonly undertaken, yet allow for a more comprehensive understanding of structure-property relationships.

Densification characteristics of amorphous ZrO2-40 mol% Al2O3 powder with 3 to 15 mu m nominal particle size range, produced by spray pyrolysis, have been studied by conducting hot pressing experiments at 573, 723 and 873 K with uniaxial pressures of 250, 500 and 750 MPa. Most of the increase in relative density from the starting value of similar to 40% occurred during loading up to the desired pressure. The increments in density during 1 hour constant pressure dwells were less than 4% at all temperatures and pressure. Inter-particle bonding was not observed at 573 K. Correlation between the results with a viscous sintering model for hot pressing is not satisfactory for describing the behavior as normal viscous sintering.

Magnetoelectric multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) was synthesized by a simple carbonate precipitation technique of metal nitrate solutions. X-ray powder diffraction and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the precipitate consists of an intimate mixture of crystalline bismuth carbonate and an amorphous hydroxide of iron. The precipitate yielded BiFeO3 at an optimal calcination temperature of similar to 560A degrees C. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis showed 1:1 ratio between Bi and Fe in the oxide. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies confirmed that Fe to be in +3 oxidation states both in the precipitated powder and BiFeO3. The synthesized BFO exhibits a very weak ferromagnetic correlation at room temperature and the degree of which increases slightly on cooling down to 10 K suggesting alteration in the long range spatial modulation of the spins arrangement as compared to the bulk BiFeO3.

In this paper, we report a synthesis, characterization and electrochemical properties of V2O5 nanobelts. V2O5 nanobelts have been prepared via hydrothermal treatment of commercial V2O5 in acidic (HCl/H2SO4) medium at relatively low temperature (160 degrees C). The hydrothermally derived products have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis spectroscopy, Scanning/Transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM). XRD pattern of V2O5 nanobelts show an orthorhombic phase. From the FTIR spectrum, the peak observed at 1018 cm-1 is characteristic of the stretching vibration mode of the terminal vanadyl, V = O. The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of V2O5 nanobelts show maximum absorbance at 430 nm, which was blue-shifted compared to that of bulk V2O5. TEM micrographs reveal that the products consist of nanobelts of 40-200 nm in thickness and several tens of micrometers in length. The electrochemical analysis shows an initial discharge capacity of 360 mAh g-1 and its almost stabilized capacity is reached to 250 mAh g-1 after 55 cycles. A probable reaction mechanism for the formation of orthorhombic V2O5 nanobelts is proposed.

Temperature dependent X-ray powder diffraction and dielectric studies have been carried out on tetragonal compositions of (1-x) PbTiO 3(x) BiMeO 3; Me similar to Sc and Zn 1/2 Ti 1/2. The cubic and the tetragonal phases coexist over more than 100 degrees C for 0.70 PbTiO 30.3 Bi ( Zn 1/2 Ti 1/2) O 3 and 0.66 PbTiO 30.34 BiScO 3. The wide temperature range of phase coexistence is shown to be an intrinsic feature of the system, and is attributed to the increase in the degree of the covalent character of the ( Pb +Bi ) O bond with increasing concentration of Bi at the Pb -site. The d-values of the {111} planes of the coexisting phases are nearly identical, suggesting this plane to be the invariant plane for the martensitic type cubic-tetragonal transformation occurring in these systems.

The effectiveness of different routes of equal channel angular pressing (A, B-c, and C) is studied for commercially pure copper. The stored energy and the activation energy of recrystallization for the deformed samples were quantified using differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction line profile analysis. Results of the study revealed that the dislocation density and the stored energy are higher in the case of route B-c deformed sample. The activation energy for recrystallization is lower for route B-c. (C) 2012 International Centre for Diffraction Data doi:10.1017/S0885715612000310]

Cd-1 - xNixSiO3 (x = 1-7 mol%) nanophosphors have been prepared for the first time by the combustion method using oxylyldihydrizide as a fuel. Powder X-ray diffraction results confirm the formation of monoclinic phase. Scanning electron micrographs show that Ni2+ influences the porosity of samples. The optical energy gap is widened with increase of Ni2+ ion dopant. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum of Ni2+ ions in CdSiO3 exhibits a symmetric absorption at g = 2.343 and the site symmetry around Ni2+ ions is predominantly octahedral. The number of spins participating in resonance (N) and the paramagnetic susceptibility (chi) has been evaluated. The thermoluminescence intensity is found to increase up to similar to 20 min ultra-violet exposure and thereafter, decrease with further increase of ultra-violet dose. The kinetic parameters such as activation energy (E), frequency factor (s)and order of kinetics was estimated using glow peak shape method and the results are discussed. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. A temperature dependent neutron powder diffraction study, in conjunction with dielectric and ferroelectric characterization, of slightly Ca modified Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) revealed an instability with regard to a non-polar orthorhombic (Pbnm) distortion above room temperature. This intermediate orthorhombic phase has earlier been reported for unmodified NBT by electron diffraction studies, but has never been captured by global (x-ray/neutron) diffraction techniques. Calcium substitution seems to amplify the magnitude of this intermediate orthorhombic distortion thereby making the corresponding superlattice reflections become visible in the neutron diffraction pattern. The study revealed the following sequence of very complex structural evolution with temperature: Cc -> Cc + Pbnm -> Pbnm + P4/mbm -> P4/mbm -> Pm (3) over barm.

This paper reports for the first time synthesis of free standing nano-crystalline copper crystals of a similar to 30-40 nm by ball milling of copper powder at 150 K under Argon atmosphere in a specially designed cryomill. The detailed characterization of these particles using multiple techniques that includes transmission electron microscopy confirms our conclusion. Careful analysis of the chemistry of these particles indicates that these particles are essentially contamination free. Through the analysis of existing models of grain size refinements during ball milling and low temperature deformation, we argue that the suppression of thermal processes and low temperature leads to formation of free nanoparticles as the process of fracture dominates over possible cold welding at low temperatures. A combination of chemical and thermal annealing techniques has been employed to synthesize a rarely reported nanocup structure of Mn doped ZnO with good yield. Nanocup structures are obtained by thermally annealing the powder samples consisting of nanosheets, synthesized chemically at room temperature, isochronally in a furnace at 200-500 degrees C temperature range for 2 h. Strong excitonic absorption in the UV and photoluminescence (PL) emission in UV-visible regions are observed in all the samples at room temperature. The sample obtained at 300 degrees C annealing temperature exhibits strong PL emission in the UV due to near-band-edge emission along with very week defect related emissions in the visible regions. The synthesized samples have been found to be exhibiting stable optical properties for 10 months which proved the unique feature of the presented technique of synthesis of nanocup structures. Morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) systems are characterized by the coexistence of two ferroelectric phases and are associated with anomalous piezoelectric properties. In general, such coexistence is brought about by composition induced ferroelectric-ferroelectric instability. Here we demonstrate that a pure ferroelectric compound Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3 (NBT) exhibits the coexistence of two ferroelectric phases, rhombohedral (R3c) and monoclinic (Cc), in its equilibrium state at room temperature. This was unravelled by adopting a unique strategy of comparative structural analysis of electrically poled and thermally annealed specimens using high resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction data. The relative fraction of the coexisting phases was found to be highly sensitive to thermal, mechanical, and electrical stimuli. The coexistence of ferroelectric phases in the ground state of the pure compound will have significant bearing on the way MPB is induced in NBT-based lead-free piezoceramics. The present investigation reports the preparation of freestanding nanocrystalline Zn by combined mechanical milling at cryogenic and room temperatures. The cryomilling is used as an effective means of rapid fracturing. The detailed scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations indicate that the minimum crystallite size is 6 +/- A 2 nm after 3 hours of cryomilling. The crystallite size increases to 30 +/- A 2 nm after 3 hours of room temperature milling of the cryomilled powder due to deformation-induced sintering. Detailed theoretical analysis allows us to obtain a diagram of size of the nanoparticles formed vs temperature to explain the experimental findings.
