Studies were carried out to assess the utility of the cellular and extracellular constituents of Bacillus megaterium for the flotation of sphalerite and galena minerals. Based on the flotation results on the individual minerals, it was observed that sphalerite was preferentially floated compared to galena. A maximum selectivity index (SI) value of 11.7 was achieved in the presence of the soluble fraction of the thermolysed cells, which was higher than that obtained with the intact cells (SI of 6.5) and the insoluble fraction of the thermolysed cells (SI of 9.6). The results of the various enzymatic treatment tests revealed that extracellular DNA played a vital role in the selective flotation of sphalerite. A noteworthy finding was that the single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) had a higher biocollector capacity vis-A -vis the double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), leading to better flotation efficiency. About 95 % recovery of sphalerite could be achieved from the mineral mixture by the combined addition of the ssDNA with the non-DNA components of the bacterial cells, resulting in a maximum SI of 19.1. Calcium and phosphate components of the nutrient media were found to be essential for better selectivity of separation of sphalerite. The mechanisms of microbe-mineral interaction are discussed.

This is a transient two-dimensional numerical study of double-diffusive salt fingers in a two-layer heat-salt system for a wide range of initial density stability ratio (R-rho 0) and thermal Rayleigh numbers (Ra-T similar to 10(3) - 10(11)). Salt fingers have been studied for several decades now, but several perplexing features of this rich and complex system remain unexplained. The work in question studies this problem and shows the morphological variation in fingers from low to high thermal Rayleigh numbers, which have been missed by the previous investigators. Considerable variations in convective structures and evolution pattern were observed in the range of Ra-T used in the simulation. Evolution of salt fingers was studied by monitoring the finger structures, kinetic energy, vertical profiles, velocity fields, and transient variation of R-rho(t). The results show that large scale convection that limits the finger length was observed only at high Rayleigh numbers. The transition from nonlinear to linear convection occurs at about Ra-T similar to 10(8). Contrary to the popular notion, R-rho(t) first decrease during diffusion before the onset time and then increase when convection begins at the interface. Decrease in R-rho(t) is substantial at low Ra-T and it decreases even below unity resulting in overturning of the system. Interestingly, all the finger system passes through the same state before the onset of convection irrespective of Rayleigh number and density stability ratio of the system. Haloperidol, an antipsychotic drug, was screened for new solid crystalline phases using high throughput crystallization in pursuit of solubility improvement. Due to the highly basic nature of the API, all the solid forms with acids were obtained in the form of salts. Eleven crystalline salts in the form of oxalate (1:1), benzoate (1:1), salicylate (1:1 and 1:2), 4-hydroxybenzoate (1:1), 4-hydroxybenzoate ethyl acetate solvate (1:1:1), 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate (1:1), 3,5-dihydroxybenzoate (1:1), mesylate (1:1), besylate (1:1), and tosylate (1:1) salt were achieved. There is an insertion of carboxylate or sulfonate anion into the hydrogen bonding pattern of haloperidol. The salts with the aliphatic carboxylic acids were found to be more prone to form salt hydrates compared with aromatic carboxylate salts. All the salts were subjected to solubility measurement in water at neutral pH. There was no direct correlation observed between the solubility of the salt and its coformer. All the salts are stable at room temperature as well as after 24 h slurry experiment except the oxalate salt, which showed an unusual phase transformation from its hydrated form to the anhydrous form. A structureproperty relationship was examined to analyze the solubility behavior of the solid forms.

Milling is an energy intensive process and it is considered as one of the most energy inefficient processes. Electrical and mechanical shock loading can be used to develop a pre-treatment methodology to enhance energy efficiency of comminution and liberation of minerals. Coal and Banded Hematite Jasper (BHJ) Iron ores samples were taken for the study to know the effect of shock loading. These samples were exposed to 5 electric shocks of 300 kV using an electric shock loading device. A diaphragmless shock tube was used to produce 3 and 6 compressed air shocks of Mach number 2.12 to treat the coal and Iron ore samples. Microscopic, comminution and liberation studies were carried out to compare the effectiveness of these approaches. It was found that electric shock loading can comminute the coal samples more effectively and increases the yield of carbon by 40% at 1.6 gm/cc density over the untreated coal samples. Mechanical shock loading showed improved milling performance for both the materials and 12.90% and 8.1% reduction in the D-80 of the particles was observed during grinding for treated samples of coal and iron, respectively. Liberation of minerals in BHJ Iron ore was found unaffected due to low intensity of the mechanical shock waves and non conductivity of minerals. Compressed air based shock loading is easier to operate than electrical shock loading and it needs to be explored further to improve the energy efficacy of comminution. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. A comparative study of two bacterial strains namely, Bacillus licheniformis and Bacillus firmus in the production of bioflocculants was made. The highest bioflocculant yield of 16.55 g/L was obtained from B. licheniformis (L) and 10 g/L from B. firmus (F). The bioflocculants obtained from the bacterial species were water soluble and insoluble in organic solvents. FTIR spectral analysis revealed the presence of hydroxyl, carboxyl and sugar derivatives in the bioflocculants. Thermal characterization by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed the crystalline transition and the melting point (T-m) at 90-100 degrees C. Effects of bioflocculant dosage and pH on the flocculation of clay fines were evaluated. Highest bioflocculation efficiency on kaolin clay suspensions was observed at an optimum bioflocculant dosage of 5 g/L. The optimum pH range for the maximum bioflocculation was at pH 7-9. Bioflocculants exhibited high efficiency in dye decolorization. The maximum Cr (VI) removal was found to be 85 % for L (bioflocculant dosage at 2 g/L). This study demonstrates that microbial bioflocculants find potential applications in mineral processing such as selective flocculation of mineral fines, decolorization of dye solutions and in the remediation of toxic metal solutions. Electronically nonadiabatic decomposition pathways of guanidium triazolate are explored theoretically. Nonadiabatically coupled potential energy surfaces are explored at the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) level of theory. For better estimation of energies complete active space second order perturbation theories (CASPT2 and CASMP2) are also employed. Density functional theory (DFT) with B3LYP functional and MP2 level of theory are used to explore subsequent ground state decomposition pathways. In comparison with all possible stable decomposition products (such as, N-2, NH3, HNC, HCN, NH2CN and CH3NC), only NH3 (with NH2CN) and N-2 are predicted to be energetically most accessible initial decomposition products. Furthermore, different conical intersections between the S-1 and S-0 surfaces, which are computed at the CASSCF(14,10)/6-31G(d) level of theory, are found to play an essential role in the excited state deactivation process of guanidium triazolate. This is the first report on the electronically nonadiabatic decomposition mechanisms of isolated guanidium triazolate salt. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Aerosol loading over the South Asian region has the potential to affect the monsoon rainfall, Himalayan glaciers and regional air-quality, with implications for the billions in this region. While field campaigns and network observations provide primary data, they tend to be location/season specific. Numerical models are useful to regionalize such location-specific data. Studies have shown that numerical models underestimate the aerosol scenario over the Indian region, mainly due to shortcomings related to meteorology and the emission inventories used. In this context, we have evaluated the performance of two such chemistry-transport models: WRF-Chem and SPRINTARS over an India-centric domain. The models differ in many aspects including physical domain, horizontal resolution, meteorological forcing and so on etc. Despite these differences, both the models simulated similar spatial patterns of Black Carbon (BC) mass concentration, (with a spatial correlation of 0.9 with each other), and a reasonable estimates of its concentration, though both of them under-estimated vis-a-vis the observations. While the emissions are lower (higher) in SPRINTARS (WRF-Chem), overestimation of wind parameters in WRF-Chem caused the concentration to be similar in both models. Additionally, we quantified the under-estimations of anthropogenic BC emissions in the inventories used these two models and three other widely used emission inventories. Our analysis indicates that all these emission inventories underestimate the emissions of BC over India by a factor that ranges from 1.5 to 2.9. We have also studied the model simulations of aerosol optical depth over the Indian region. The models differ significantly in simulations of AOD, with WRF-Chem having a better agreement with satellite observations of AOD as far as the spatial pattern is concerned. It is important to note that in addition to BC, dust can also contribute significantly to AOD. The models differ in simulations of the spatial pattern of mineral dust over the Indian region. We find that both meteorological forcing and emission formulation contribute to these differences. Since AOD is column integrated parameter, description of vertical profiles in both models, especially since elevated aerosol layers are often observed over Indian region, could be also a contributing factor. Additionally, differences in the prescription of the optical properties of BC between the models appear to affect the AOD simulations. We also compared simulation of sea-salt concentration in the two models and found that WRF-Chem underestimated its concentration vis-a-vis SPRINTARS. The differences in near-surface oceanic wind speeds appear to be the main source of this difference. In-spite of these differences, we note that there are similarities in their simulation of spatial patterns of various aerosol species (with each other and with observations) and hence models could be valuable tools for aerosol-related studies over the Indian region. Better estimation of emission inventories could improve aerosol-related simulations. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The selective flotation of sphalerite from a sphalerite-galena mineral mixture was achieved using cellular components of Paenibacillus polymyxa after adaptation to the above minerals. The soluble and insoluble fractions of the thermolysed bacterial cells adapted to sphalerite yielded higher flotation recoveries of sphalerite with selectivity indices ranging between 22 and 29. The protein profile for the unadapted and mineral-stressed cells was found to differ distinctly, attesting to variation in the yield and nature of extra-cellular polymeric substances. The changes induced in the bacterial cell wall components after adaptation to sphalerite or galena with respect to the contents of phosphate, uronic acid and acetylated sugars of P. polymyxa were quantified. In keeping with these changes, a marginal morphological transition of P. polymyxa from rods to spheres was observed. The role of the dissolved metal ions from the minerals as well as that of the constituents of extracellular secretions in modulating the surface potential of the mineral-stressed cells were demonstrated. These studies highlighted that, mineral stress led to qualitative and quantitative changes in the cellular components, which facilitated the enhancement of flotation selectivity of sphalerite.
