In the present study, solidification microstructure and texture evolution in grain-refined Ti-6Al-4V and γ-TiAl alloys via trace boron addition are compared with their baseline counterparts. Boron addition resulted in dramatic grain refinement by almost an order of magnitude. The texture developed in these alloys is also markedly different from the baseline alloys.

Liquid phase co-spray forming (LPCSF) was employed to produce two Al-Si-Pb alloys. The preforms thus obtained were then subjected to hot extrusion at different extrusion ratios. Following extrusion, the materials were tensile tested at room temperature. The distribution of Pb particles and the microstructural characterization in as-formed preforms and in the extruded rods were studied on the basis of SEM observation. The influence of the Pb content on the mechanical properties was investigated. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Hypoeutectic boron addition (0.1 wt.%) to Ti-6Al-4V is known to cause significant refinement of the cast microstructure. In the present investigation, it has been observed that trace boron addition to Ti-6Al-4V alloy also ensures excellent microstructural homogeneity throughout the ingot. A subdued thermal gradient, related to the basic grain refinement mechanism by constitutional undercooling, persists during solidification for the boron-containing alloy and maintains equivalent beta grain growth kinetics at different locations in the ingot. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy shows relatively strong texture with preferred components (e.g. ingot axis parallel to[0 0 0 1] or [1 0 (1) over bar 0]) over the entire ingot and gradual transition of texture components along the radius. For Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy, significant weakening characterizes both the high-temperature beta and room-temperature a texture. In addition to solidification factors that are responsible for weak beta texture development, microstructural differences due to boron addition, e.g. the absence of grain boundary alpha phase and presence of TiB particles, strongly affects the mechanism of beta -> alpha phase transformation and consequently weakens the alpha phase texture. Based on the understanding developed for the boron-modified alloy, a novel mechanism has been proposed for the microstructure and texture formation during solidification and phase transformation. In this paper we report a modeling technique and analysis of wave dispersion in a cellular composite laminate with spatially modulated microstructure, which can be modeled by parameterization and homogenization in an appropriate length scale. Higher order beam theory is applied and the system of wave equations are derived. Homogenization of these equations are carried out in the scale of wavelength and frequency of the individual wave modes. Smaller scale scattering below the order of cell size are filtered out in the present approach. The longitudinal dispersion relations for different values of a modulation parameter are analyzed which indicates the existence of stop and pass band patterns. Dispersion relations for flexural-shear case are also analyzed which indicates a tendency toward forming the stop and pass bands for increasing values of a shear stiffness modulation parameter. The effect the phase angle (θ) of the incident wave indicates the existence more number of alternative stop bands and pass bands for θ = 45°.

The Ag-Ni system is characterized by large differences in atomic sizes (14%) and a positive heat of mixing (+23 kJ mol(-1)). The binary equilibrium diagram for this system therefore exhibits a large miscibility gap in both solid and liquid state. This paper explores the size-dependent changes in microstructure and the suppression of the miscibility gap which occurs when free alloy particles of nanometer size are synthesized by co-reduction of Ag and Ni metal precursors. The paper reports that complete mixing between Ag and Ni atoms could be achieved for smaller nanoparticles (<7 nm). These particles exhibit a single-phase solid solution with face-centered cubic (fcc) structure. With increase in size, the nanoparticles revealed two distinct regions. One of the regions is composed of pure Ag. This region partially surrounds a region of fcc solid solution at an early stage of decomposition. Experimental observations were compared with the results obtained from the thermodynamic calculations, which compared the free energies corresponding to a physical mixture of pure Ag and Ni phases and a fcc Ag-Ni solid solution for different particle sizes. Results from the theoretical calculations revealed that, for the Ag-Ni system, solid solution was energetically preferred over the physical mixture configuration for particle sizes of 7 nm and below. The experimentally observed two-phase microstructure for larger particles was thus primarily due to the growth of Ag-rich regions epitaxially on initially formed small fcc Ag-Ni nanoparticles. The effect of strain path change during rolling has been investigated for copper and nickel using X-ray diffraction and electron back scatter diffraction as well as crystal plasticity simulations. Four different strain paths namely: (i) unidirectional rolling; (ii) reverse rolling; (iii) two-step cross rolling and (iv) multi-step cross rolling were employed to decipher the effect of strain path change on the evolution of deformation texture and microstructure. The cross rolled samples showed weaker texture with a prominent Bs {1 1 0}< 1 1 2 > and P(B(ND)) {1 1 0}< 1 1 1 > component in contrast to the unidirectional and reverse rolled samples where strong S {1 2 3}< 6 3 4 > and Cu {1 1 2}< 1 1 1 > components were formed. This was more pronounced for copper samples compared to nickel. The cross rolled samples were characterized by lower anisotropy and Taylor factor as well as less variation in Lankford parameter. Viscoplastic self-consistent simulations indicated that slip activity on higher number of octahedral slip systems can explain the weaker texture as well as reduced anisotropy in the cross rolled samples. The effect of 4.0 MeV proton irradiation on the microstructure and mechanical properties of nanocrystalline (nc) nickel was investigated. The irradiation damage induced in the sample was of the order of 0.004 dpa. Transmission electron microscopy of irradiated samples indicated the presence of dislocation loops within the grains. An increase in hardness and strain-rate sensitivity (m) of nc-Ni with irradiation was noted. The rate-controlling deformation mechanism in irradiated nc-Ni was identified to be interaction of dislocations with irradiation-induced defects. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. We report the formation of Ag-Fe nanoparticles with an ultrafine scale phase separated microstructure consisting of Ag and Fe(3)O(4) phases. Ag-Fe particles were synthesised by the co-reduction of Ag and Fe salts in water medium. The co-existing Ag and Fe(3)O(4) phase volumes were around similar to 1 nm in one of the dimensions. The effect of electromagnetic stirring of melt on the final macrosegregation in the continuous casting of an aluminium alloy billet is studied numerically. A continuum mixture model for solidification in presence of electromagnetic stirring is presented. As a case study, simulations are performed for direct chill (DC) casting of an Al-Cu alloy and the effect of electromagnetic stirring on macrosegregation is analysed. The model predicts the temperature, velocity, and species distribution in the mold. As a special case, we have also studied the case in which dendritic particles are fragmented at the interface due to vigorous electromagnetic stirring. For this case, an additional conservation equation for the transport of solid fraction is solved. For modeling the resistance offered by moving solid crystals, a switching function in the momentum equations is used for variation of viscosity. The fragmentation and transport of dendritic particles has a profound effect on the final macrosegregation and microstructure of the solidified billet. It is found that the application of electromagnetic stirring in continuous casting of billets results in better temperature uniformity and macrosegregation pattern.

In this paper, we report a significant improvement in mechanical properties of near eutectic Nb-Si alloys by addition of Gallium (Ga) and control of microstructural length scale. A comparative study of two alloys Nb-18.79 at.%Si and Nb-20.2 at.%Si-2.7 at.%Ga were carried out. The microstructure refinements were carried out by vacuum suction casting in water cooled thick copper mold. It is shown that addition of Ga suppresses Nb(3)Si phase and promotes beta-Nb(5)Si(3) phase. The microstructural length scale and in particular eutectic spacing reduces significantly to 50-100 nm in suction cast ternary alloys. Compression test shows a strength of 2.8 +/- 0.1 GPa and plasticity of 4.3 +/- 0.03%. In comparison, the binary Nb-18.79 at.%Si alloy processed under identical conditions exhibit coarser length scale (300-400 nm) and brittle behavior. The fracture toughness of Ga containing suction cast alloy shows a value of 24.11 +/- 0.5 MPa root m representing a major improvement for bulk Nb-Si eutectic alloy. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. In this present paper, the effects of non-isothermal rolling temperature and reduction in thickness followed by annealing on microstructure and mechanical properties of ZM21 magnesium alloy were investigated. The alloy rolled at four different temperatures 250 degrees C, 300 degrees C, 350 degrees C and 400 degrees C with reductions of 25%, 50% and 75%. Non-isothermal rolling resulted in grain refinement, introduction of shear bands and twins in the matrix alloy. Partial to full recrystallization was observed when the rolling temperature was above recrystallization temperature. Rolling and subsequent annealing resulted in strain-free equiaxed grains and complete disappearance of shear bands and twins. Maximum ultimate strength (345 MPa) with good ductility (14%) observed in the sample rolled at 250 degrees C with 75% reduction in thickness followed by short annealing. Recrystallization during warm/hot rolling was sluggish, but post-roll treatment gives distinct views about dynamic and static recrystallization. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present investigation, a strongly bonded strip of an aluminium-magnesium based alloy AA5086 is successfully produced through accumulative roll bonding (ARB). A maximum of up to eight passes has been used for the purpose. Microstructural characterization using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique indicates the formation of submicron sized (similar to 200-300 nm) subgrains inside the layered microstructure. The material is strongly textured where individual layers possess typical FCC rolling texture components. More than three times enhancement in 0.2% proof stress (PS) has been obtained after 8 passes due to grain refinement and strain hardening. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
