It is shown that the effect of adsorption of inert molecules on electrode reaction rates is completely accounted for, by introducing into the rate equation, adsorption-induced changes in both the effective electrode area as well as in the electrostatic potential at the reaction site with an additional term for the noncoulombic interaction between the reactant and the adsorbate. The electrostatic potential at the reaction site due to the adsorbed layer is calculated using a model of discretely-distributed molecules in parallel orientation when adsorbed on the electrode with an allowance for thermal agitation. The resulting expression, which is valid for the limiting case of low coverages, is used to predict the types of molecular surfactants that are most likely to be useful for acceleration and inhibition of electrode reactions.

Using inhomogeneous dynamical mean-field theory, we show that the normal-metal proximity effect could force any finite number of Mott-insulating "barrier" planes sandwiched between semi-infinite metallic leads to become "fragile" Fermi liquids. They are fully Fermi-liquid-like at T=0, leading to a restoration of lattice periodicity at zero frequency, with a well-defined Fermi surface, and perfect (ballistic) conductivity. However, the Fermi-liquid character can rapidly disappear at finite omega, V, T, disorder, or magnetism, all of which restore the expected quantum tunneling regime, leading to fascinating possibilities for nonlinear response in devices.

Pursuit evasion in a plane is formulated with both players allowed to vary their speeds between fixed limits. A suitable choice of real-space coordinates confers open-loop optimality on the game. The solution in the small is described in terms of the individual players'' extremal trajectory maps (ETM). Each map is independent of role, adversary, and capture radius. An ETM depicts the actual real-space trajectories. A template method of generating constant control arcs is described. Examples of ETM for an aircraft flying at a constant altitude with fixed and varying speeds are presented.

An iterative method of constructing sections of the game surfaces from the players'' extremal trajectory maps is discussed. Barrier sections are presented for aircraft pursuit-evasion at constant altitude, with one aircraft flying at sustained speed and the other varying its speed.

The data obtained in the earlier parts of this series for the donor and acceptor end parameters of N-H. O and O-H. O hydrogen bonds have been utilised to obtain a qualitative working criterion to classify the hydrogen bonds into three categories: "very good" (VG), "moderately good" (MG) and weak (W). The general distribution curves for all the four parameters are found to be nearly of the Gaussian type. Assuming that the VG hydrogen bonds lie between 0 and ± la, MG hydrogen bonds between ± 1 and ± 2, W hydrogen bonds beyond ± 2 (where is the standard deviation), suitable cut-off limits for classifying the hydrogen bonds in the three categories have been derived. These limits are used to get VG and MG ranges for the four parameters 1 and θ (at the donor end) and ± and ± (at the acceptor end). The qualitative strength of a hydrogen bond is decided by the cumulative application of the criteria to all the four parameters. The criterion has been further applied to some practical examples in conformational studies such as α-helix and can be used for obtaining suitable location of hydrogen atoms to form good hydrogen bonds. An empirical approach to the energy of hydrogen bonds in the three categories has also been presented.

The synthesis of 4,4,N,N-tetramethyl-NN-dinitroso-2,2-methylenedianiline (1) by the route p-MeC6H4NH2+ HCHO + OH–(p-MeC6H4NMe)2CH2(7b); (7b)+ acid at 70 °C 4,N-dimethyl-6-(N-methyl-p-toluidinomethyl)aniline (4b); (4b)+ acid at 130 °C 4,4,NN-tetramethyl-2,2-methylenedianiline (3b); (3b)+ HNO2(1), is described. Aspects of the 1H n.m.r. spectra of the above and related compounds are discussed. A crystal-structure analysis of compound (1) shows one of the N-nitroso-groups to be disordered with the endo-form being in preponderance (4 : 1) over the exo-form. The other N-nitroso-group is exclusively exo in the solid state. There is little or no resonance between the benzene ring and the nitroso-group attached to the ring, the two groups being almost perpendicular to each other. In one of the N-nitroso-groups, the nitrogen atom deviates significantly from the plane of the benzene ring to which it is attached. Both amide nitrogen atoms show some pyramidal character.

The reaction of octachlorocyclotetraphosphazatetraene, N4P4Cl8, with ethylamine has been investigated. Seven derivatives, N4P4Cl8–n(NHEt)n[n= 1, 2 (two isomers), 3, 4 (two isomers), and 8] have been isolated and their structures established by 1H and 31P n.m.r. spectroscopy. A non-geminal chlorine atom replacement scheme is observed. Attempts to prepare penta- or hexa-ethylamino derivatives were unsuccessful: only sticky, non-crystalline resins were obtained from 1 : 10 or 1 : 12 reactions. The preparation and n.m.r. spectroscopic data of mixed ethylamino(methoxy)-derivatives. N4P4(NHEt)–8-n(OMe)n[n= 6, 4 (two isomers)], and an ethylamino-(dimethylamino)-derivative, N4P4(NHEt)2(NMe2)6, are generally consistent with the proposed structures. The reaction pattern is discussed.

Digital fluidic and pneumatic systems incorporate displays for the presentation of information to the operator. Displays reported so far for such systems use moving pistons, tapes, and other mechanisms leading to lower reliability. This paper describes a nonmoving part fluidic display employing the photoelastic effect. The display is pressure actuated and has a long life. When fabricated from compatible materials, this device can withstand hostile environments like nuclear radiation, vibrations, etc. The display is compact, economical and is virtually maintenance free. The display unit has been tested in the laboratory for reliability and speed of response.

7-Acetonyloxy-5-methyl--tetralone (Vc) was cyclodehydrated to 7,8-dihydro-1,5-dimethylnaphtho[2,1-b]furan-9(6H)-one (VIa), the structure of which was established by an independent synthesis from methyl 4-(4-acetonyloxy-2-methylphenyl)butyrate (IXd). Similarly, 7-acetonyloxy-2,5-dimethyl--tetralone (Vf), synthesized via 4-(5-isopropyl-4-methoxy-2-methylphenyl)-2-methylbutyric acid (XIIb) and 7-methoxy-2,5-dimethyl--tetralone (Vd), was cyclodehydrated to 7,8-dihydro-1,5,8-trimethylnaphtho[2,1-b]furan-9(6H)-one (VIb), which on reduction and dehydration furnished pyrocurzerenone (6,7-dihydro-1,5,8-trimethylnaphtho[2,1-b]furan)(I). The deisopropylation and cyclodehydration of (XIIb) to (Vd) were effected in one step by treatment with polyphosphoric acid.

Pterosin E (2,5,7-trimethyl-1-oxoindan-6-ylacetic acid)(Ia), a naturally occurring sesquiterpenoid has been synthesized starting from -bromomesitylene (IIIa). Alkylation of diethyl methylmalonate with (IIIa) gave the diester (IIIb) which was converted into the cyanomethyl diester (IVb). Hydrolysis of (IVb) to the dicarboxylic acid (V) followed by its cyclodehydration gave pterosin E.

The X-ray crystal structures of 4-butyl-1,2-diphenylpyrazolidine-3,5-dione (phenylbutazone)(I). and its 2 : 1 complex (II) with piperazine have been determined by direct methods and the structures refined to R 0.096 (2 300 observed reflections measured by diffractometer) and 0.074 (2 494 observed reflections visuallyestimated). Crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/c; for (I)a= 21.695(4), b= 5.823(2), c= 27.881(4)Å, = 108.06 (10)°, Z= 8, and for (II)a= 8.048(4), b= 15.081(4), c= 15.583(7)Å, = 95.9(3)°, Z= 2. The two crystallographically independant molecules in the structure of (I) are similar except for the conformation of the butyl group, which is disordered in one of the molecules. In the pyrazolidinedione group, the two C–C bonds are single and the two C–O bonds double. The two nitrogen atoms in the five-membered ring are pyramidal with the attached phenyl groups lying on the opposite sides of the mean plane of the ring. The phenylbutazone molecule in (II) exists as a negative ion owing to deprotonation of C-4. C-4 is therefore trigonal and the orientation of the Bu group with respect to the pyrazolidinedione group is considerably different from that in (I); there is also considerable electron delocalization along the C–O and C–C bonds. These changes in geometry and electronic structure may relate to biological activity. The doubly charged cationic piperazine molecule exists in the chair form with the nitrogen atoms at the apices. The crystal structure of (II) is stabilized by ionic interactions and N–H O hydrogen bonds.

A geodesic-based approach using Lamb waves is proposed to locate the acoustic emission (AE) source and damage in an isotropic metallic structure. In the case of the AE (passive) technique, the elastic waves take the shortest path from the source to the sensor array distributed in the structure. The geodesics are computed on the meshed surface of the structure using graph theory based on Dijkstra's algorithm. By propagating the waves in reverse virtually from these sensors along the geodesic path and by locating the first intersection point of these waves, one can get the AE source location. The same approach is extended for detection of damage in a structure. The wave response matrix of the given sensor configuration for the healthy and the damaged structure is obtained experimentally. The healthy and damage response matrix is compared and their difference gives the information about the reflection of waves from the damage. These waves are backpropagated from the sensors and the above method is used to locate the damage by finding the point where intersection of geodesics occurs. In this work, the geodesic approach is shown to be suitable to obtain a practicable source location solution in a more general set-up on any arbitrary surface containing finite discontinuities. Experiments were conducted on aluminum specimens of simple and complex geometry to validate this new method.

Time reversal active sensing using Lamb waves is investigated for health monitoring of a metallic structure. Experiments were conducted on an aluminum plate to study the time reversal behavior of A(0) and S-0 Lamb wave modes under narrow band and broad band pulse excitation. Damage in the form of a notch was introduced in the plate to study the changes in the characteristics of the time reversed Lamb wave modes experimentally. Time-frequency analysis of the time reversed signal was carried out to extract the damage information. A measure of damage based on wavelet transform was derived to quantify the hidden damage information in the time reversed signal. It has been shown that time reversal can be used to achieve temporal recompression of Lamb waves under broadband signal excitation. Further, the broad band excitation can also improve the resolution of the technique in detecting closely located defects. This is demonstrated by picking up the reflection of waves from the edge of the plate, from a defect close to the edge of the plate and from defects located near to each other. This study shows the effectiveness of Lamb wave time reversal for temporal recompression of dispersive Lamb waves for damage detection in health monitoring applications. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Phase separation (PS) in hole-doped cobaltites (La1-xSrxCoxO3) is drawing renewed interest recently. In particular, the magnetic behavior of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 has been subjected to a controversial debate for the past several years; while some groups show evidence for magnetic PS, others show spin glass (SG) behavior. Here, an attempt is made to resolve the controversy related to ``PS versus SG'' behavior in this compound. We present the results of a comprehensive investigation of the dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, and the magnetotransport properties of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 samples. We contemplate that the magnetic PS in La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 is neither intrinsic nor inherent, but it is a consequence of the preparation conditions. It is realized that a low temperature annealed (LTA) sample shows PS whereas the high temperature annealed (HTA) sample shows SG behavior. The Brillouin-like behavior of field cooled dc magnetization and apparently no frequency dependent peak shift in ac susceptibility for the LTA sample characterize it to be of ferromagneticlike whereas a kink in field cooled dc magnetization and a considerable amount (similar to 3 K) of frequency dependent peak shift in the ac susceptibility for the HTA sample characterize it to be of SG state. The magnetotransport properties show that the HTA sample is more semiconducting as compared to the LTA sample. This is interpreted in terms of the presence of isolated as well as coalescing metallic ferromagnetic clusters in the case of LTA sample. The magnetoresistance (MR) at 10 K for the HTA sample exhibits a huge value (similar to 65%) as compared to the LTA sample, and it monotonically decreases with the rise in temperature. Such a high value of MR in the case of HTA sample is strongly believed to be due to the spin dependent part of random potential distribution. Further, the slow decay of remnant magnetization with progress of time and the existence of hysteresis at higher temperatures (up to 200 K) in the case of LTA sample as compared to the HTA sample clearly unveil different magnetic states associated with them.
