Using intensity autocorrelation of multiply scattered light, we show that the increase in interparticle interaction in dense, binary colloidal fluid mixtures of particle diameters 0.115µm and 0.089µm results in freezing into a crystalline phase at volume fraction? of 0.1 and into a glassy state at?=0.2. The functional form of the field autocorrelation functiong (1)(t) for the binary fluid phase is fitted to exp[??(6k 0 2 D eff t)1/2] wherek 0 is the magnitude of the incident light wavevector and? is a parameter inversely proportional to the photon transport mean free pathl*. TheD eff is thel* weighted average of the individual diffusion coefficients of the pure species. Thel* used in calculatingD eff was computed using the Mie theory. In the solid (crystal or glass) phase, theg (1)(t) is fitted (only with a moderate success) to exp[??(6k 0 2 W(t))1/2] where the mean-squared displacementW(t) is evaluated for a harmonically bound overdamped Brownian oscillator. It is found that the fitted parameter? for both the binary and monodisperse suspensions decreases significantly with the increase of interparticle interactions. This has been justified by showing that the calculated values ofl* in a monodisperse suspension using Mie theory increase very significantly with the interactions incorporated inl* via the static structure factor.

Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations on an Ar-13 cluster in zeolite L have been carried out at a series of temperatures to understand the rigid-nonrigid transition corresponding to the solid-liquid transition exhibited by the free Ar-13 cluster. The icosahedral geometry of the free cluster is no longer preferred when the cluster is confined in the zeolite. The root-mean-squared pair distance fluctuation, delta, exhibits a sharp, well-defined rigid-nonrigid transition at 17 K as compared to 27 K for the free cluster. Multiple peaks in the distribution of short-time averages of the guest-host interaction energy indicate coexistence of two phases.; It is shown that this transition is associated with the inner atoms becoming mobile at 17 K even while the outer layer atoms, which are in close proximity to the zeolitic wall, continue to be comparatively immobile. This may be contrasted with the melting of large free clusters of 40 or more atoms which exhibit surface melting. Guest-host interactions seem to play a predominant role in determining the properties of confined clusters. We demonstrate that the volume of the cluster increases rather sharply at 17 and 27 K respectively for the confined and the free cluster. Power spectra suggest that the motion of the inner atoms is generally parallel to the atoms which form the cage wall.

Three classification techniques, namely, K-means Cluster Analysis (KCA), Fuzzy Cluster Analysis (FCA), and Kohonen Neural Networks (KNN) were employed to group 25 microwatersheds of Kherthal watershed, Rajasthan into homogeneous groups for formulating the basis for suitable conservation and management practices. Ten parameters, mainly, morphological, namely, drainage density (D-d), bifurcation ratio (R-b), stream frequency (F-u), length of overland flow (L-o), form factor (R-f), shape factor (B-s), elongation ratio (R-e), circulatory ratio (R-c), compactness coefficient (C-c) and texture ratio (T) are used for the classification. Optimal number of groups is chosen, based on two cluster validation indices Davies-Bouldin and Dunn's. Comparative analysis of various clustering techniques revealed that 13 microwatersheds out of 25 are commonly suggested by KCA, FCA and KNN i.e., 52%; 17 microwatersheds out of 25 i.e., 68% are commonly suggested by KCA and FCA whereas these are 16 out of 25 in FCA and KNN (64%) and 15 out of 25 in KNN and CA (60%). It is observed from KNN sensitivity analysis that effect of various number of epochs (1000, 3000, 5000) and learning rates (0.01, 0.1-0.9) on total squared error values is significant even though no fixed trend is observed. Sensitivity analysis studies revealed that microwatershecls have occupied all the groups even though their number in each group is different in case of further increase in the number of groups from 5 to 6, 7 and 8. Routing of floods is essential to control the flood flow at the flood control station such that it is within the specified safe limit. In this paper, the applicability of the extended Muskingum method is examined for routing of floods for a case study of Hirakud reservoir, Mahanadi river basin, India. The inflows to the flood control station are of two types-one controllable which comprises of reservoir releases for power and spill and the other is uncontrollable which comprises of inflow from lower tributaries and intermediate catchment between the reservoir and the flood control station. Muskingum model is improved to incorporate multiple sources of inflows and single outflow to route the flood in the reach. Instead of time lag and prismoidal flow parameters, suitable coefficients for various types of inflows were derived using Linear Programming. Presently, the decisions about operation of gates of Hirakud dam are being taken once in 12 h during floods. However, four time intervals of 24, 18, 12 and 6 h are examined to test the sensitivity of the routing time interval on the computed flood flow at the flood control station. It is observed that mean relative error decreases with decrease in routing interval both for calibration and testing phase. It is concluded that the extended Muskingum method can be explored for similar reservoir configurations such as Hirakud reservoir with suitable modifications. In this paper, we consider a robust design of MIMO-relay precoder and receive filter for the destination nodes in a non-regenerative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay network. The network consists of multiple source-destination node pairs assisted by a single MIMO-relay node. The source and destination nodes are single antenna nodes, whereas the MIMO-relay node has multiple transmit and multiple receive antennas. The channel state information (CSI) available at the MIMO-relay node for precoding purpose is assumed to be imperfect. We assume that the norms of errors in CSI are upper-bounded, and the MIMO-relay node knows these bounds. We consider the robust design of the MIMO-relay precoder and receive filter based on the minimization of the total MIMO-relay transmit power with constraints on the mean square error (MSE) at the destination nodes. We show that this design problem can be solved by solving an alternating sequence of minimization and worst-case analysis problems. The minimization problem is formulated as a convex optimization problem that can be solved efficiently using interior-point methods. The worst-case analysis problem can be solved analytically using an approximation for the MSEs at the destination nodes. We demonstrate the robust performance of the proposed design through simulations.

This paper considers the design and analysis of a filter at the receiver of a source coding system to mitigate the excess distortion caused due to channel errors. The index output by the source encoder is sent over a fading discrete binary symmetric channel and the possibly incorrect received index is mapped to the corresponding codeword by a Vector Quantization (VQ) decoder at the receiver. The output of the VQ decoder is then processed by a receive filter to obtain an estimate of the source instantiation. The distortion performance is analyzed for weighted mean square error (WMSE) and the optimum receive filter that minimizes the expected distortion is derived for two different cases of fading. It is shown that the performance of the system with the receive filter is strictly better than that of a conventional VQ and the difference becomes more significant as the number of bits transmitted increases. Theoretical expressions for an upper and lower bound on the WMSE performance of the system with the receive filter and a Rayleigh flat fading channel are derived. The design of a receive filter in the presence of channel mismatch is also studied and it is shown that a minimax solution is the one obtained by designing the receive filter for the worst possible channel. Simulation results are presented to validate the theoretical expressions and illustrate the benefits of receive filtering.

Structural and dynamical properties of ethane in one-dimensional channels of AlPO4-5 and carbon nanotube have been investigated at dilute concentration with the help of molecular dynamics simulation. Density distributions and orientational structure of ethane have been analyzed. Repulsive interactions seem to play an important role when ethane is located in the narrow part of the AlPO4-5 channel. In AlPO4-5, parallel orientation is predominant over perpendicular orientation except when ethane is located in the broader part of the channel. Unlike in the case of single-file diffusion, our results in carbon nanotube show that at dilute concentrations the mean squared displacement, mu(2)(t) approximate to t(alpha), alpha = 1.8. The autocorrelation function for the z-component of angular velocity of ethane in space-fixed frame of reference shows a pronounced negative correlation. This is attributed to the restriction in the movement of ethane along the x- and y- directions. It is seen that the ratio of reorientational correlation times does not follow the Debye model for confined ethane but it is closer to the predictions of the Debye model for bulk ethane.

Traditional subspace based speech enhancement (SSE)methods use linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimation that is optimal if the Karhunen Loeve transform (KLT) coefficients of speech and noise are Gaussian distributed. In this paper, we investigate the use of Gaussian mixture (GM) density for modeling the non-Gaussian statistics of the clean speech KLT coefficients. Using Gaussian mixture model (GMM), the optimum minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimator is found to be nonlinear and the traditional LMMSE estimator is shown to be a special case. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides better enhancement performance than the traditional subspace based methods.Index Terms: Subspace based speech enhancement, Gaussian mixture density, MMSE estimation.

We address the problem of local-polynomial modeling of smooth time-varying signals with unknown functional form, in the presence of additive noise. The problem formulation is in the time domain and the polynomial coefficients are estimated in the pointwise minimum mean square error (PMMSE) sense. The choice of the window length for local modeling introduces a bias-variance tradeoff, which we solve optimally by using the intersection-of-confidence-intervals (ICI) technique. The combination of the local polynomial model and the ICI technique gives rise to an adaptive signal model equipped with a time-varying PMMSE-optimal window length whose performance is superior to that obtained by using a fixed window length. We also evaluate the sensitivity of the ICI technique with respect to the confidence interval width. Simulation results on electrocardiogram (ECG) signals show that at 0dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), one can achieve about 12dB improvement in SNR. Monte-Carlo performance analysis shows that the performance is comparable to the basic wavelet techniques. For 0 dB SNR, the adaptive window technique yields about 2-3dB higher SNR than wavelet regression techniques and for SNRs greater than 12dB, the wavelet techniques yield about 2dB higher SNR.

Considering a general linear model of signal degradation, by modeling the probability density function (PDF) of the clean signal using a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) and additive noise by a Gaussian PDF, we derive the minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimator. The derived MMSE estimator is non-linear and the linear MMSE estimator is shown to be a special case. For speech signal corrupted by independent additive noise, by modeling the joint PDF of time-domain speech samples of a speech frame using a GMM, we propose a speech enhancement method based on the derived MMSE estimator. We also show that the same estimator can be used for transform-domain speech enhancement.

Non-linear precoding for the downlink of a multiuser MISO (multiple-input single-output) communication system in the presence of imperfect channel state information (CSI) is considered. The base station is equipped with multiple transmit antennas and each user terminal is equipped with a single receive antenna. The CSI at the transmitter is assumed to be perturbed by an estimation error. We propose a robust minimum mean square error (MMSE) Tomlinson-Harashima precoder (THP)design, which can be formulated as an optimization problem that can be solved efficiently by the method of alternating optimization(AO). In this method of optimization, the entire set of optimization variables is partitioned into non-overlapping subsets, and an iterative sequence of optimizations on these subsets is carried out, which is often simpler compared to simultaneous optimization over all variables. In our problem, the application of the AO method results in a second-order cone program which can be numerically solved efficiently. The proposed precoder is shown to be less sensitive to imperfect channel knowledge. Simulation results illustrate the improvement in performance compared to other robust linear and non-linear precoders in the literature.

We consider a time varying wireless fading channel, equalized by an LMS linear equalizer. We study how well this equalizer tracks the optimal Wiener equalizer. We model the channel by an Auto-regressive (AR) process. Then the LMS equalizer and the AR process are jointly approximated by the solution of a system of ODEs (ordinary differential equations). Using these ODEs, the error between the LMS equalizer and the instantaneous Wiener filter is shown to decay exponentially/polynomially to zero unless the channel is marginally stable in which case the convergence may not hold.Using the same ODEs, we also show that the corresponding Mean Square Error (MSE) converges towards minimum MSE(MMSE) at the same rate for a stable channel. We further show that the difference between the MSE and the MMSE does not explode with time even when the channel is unstable. Finally we obtain an optimum step size for the linear equalizer in terms of the AR parameters, whenever the error decay is exponential.

Liquid water is known to exhibit remarkable thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies, ranging from solvation properties in supercritical state to an apparent divergence of the linear response functions at a low temperature. Anomalies in various dynamic properties of water have also been observed in the hydration layer of proteins, DNA grooves and inside the nanocavity, such as reverse micelles and nanotubes. Here we report studies on the molecular origin of these anomalies in supercooled water, in the grooves of DNA double helix and reverse micelles. The anomalies have been discussed in terms of growing correlation length and intermittent population fluctuation of 4- and 5-coordinated species. We establish correlation between thermodynamic response functions and mean squared species number fluctuation. Lifetime analysis of 4- and 5-coordinated species reveals interesting differences between the role of the two species in supercooled and constrained water. The nature and manifestations of the apparent and much discussed liquid-liquid transition under confinement are found to be markedly different from that in the bulk. We find an interesting `faster than bulk' relaxation in reverse micelles which we attribute to frustration effects created by competition between the correlations imposed by surface interactions and that imposed by hydrogen bond network of water.

In this paper, we consider robust joint designs of relay precoder and destination receive filters in a nonregenerative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay network. The network consists of multiple source-destination node pairs assisted by a MIMO-relay node. The channel state information (CSI) available at the relay node is assumed to be imperfect. We consider robust designs for two models of CSI error. The first model is a stochastic error (SE) model, where the probability distribution of the CSI error is Gaussian. This model is applicable when the imperfect CSI is mainly due to errors in channel estimation. For this model, we propose robust minimum sum mean square error (SMSE), MSE-balancing, and relay transmit power minimizing precoder designs. The next model for the CSI error is a norm-bounded error (NBE) model, where the CSI error can be specified by an uncertainty set. This model is applicable when the CSI error is dominated by quantization errors. In this case, we adopt a worst-case design approach. For this model, we propose a robust precoder design that minimizes total relay transmit power under constraints on MSEs at the destination nodes. We show that the proposed robust design problems can be reformulated as convex optimization problems that can be solved efficiently using interior-point methods. We demonstrate the robust performance of the proposed design through simulations.

We address the problem of estimating instantaneous frequency (IF) of a real-valued constant amplitude time-varying sinusoid. Estimation of polynomial IF is formulated using the zero-crossings of the signal. We propose an algorithm to estimate nonpolynomial IF by local approximation using a low-order polynomial, over a short segment of the signal. This involves the choice of window length to minimize the mean square error (MSE). The optimal window length found by directly minimizing the MSE is a function of the higher-order derivatives of the IF which are not available a priori. However, an optimum solution is formulated using an adaptive window technique based on the concept of intersection of confidence intervals. The adaptive algorithm enables minimum MSE-IF (MMSE-IF) estimation without requiring a priori information about the IF. Simulation results show that the adaptive window zero-crossing-based IF estimation method is superior to fixed window methods and is also better than adaptive spectrogram and adaptive Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD)-based IF estimators for different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).
