In this paper, we present self assessment schemes (SAS) for multiple agents performing a search mission on an unknown terrain. The agents are subjected to limited communication and sensor ranges. The agents communicate and coordinate with their neighbours to arrive at route decisions. The self assessment schemes proposed here have very low communication and computational overhead. The SAS also has attractive features like scalability to large number of agents and fast decision-making capability. SAS can be used with partial or complete information sharing schemes during the search mission. We validate the performance of SAS using simulation on a large search space consisting of 100 agents with different information structures and self assessment schemes. We also compare the results obtained using SAS with that of a previously proposed negotiation scheme. The simulation results show that the SAS is scalable to large number of agents and can perform as good as the negotiation schemes with reduced communication requirement (almost 20% of that required for negotiation).

Non-orthogonal space-time block codes (STBC) with large dimensions are attractive because they can simultaneously achieve both high spectral efficiencies (same spectral efficiency as in V-BLAST for a given number of transmit antennas) as well as full transmit diversity. Decoding of non-orthogonal STBCs with large dimensions has been a challenge. In this paper, we present a reactive tabu search (RTS) based algorithm for decoding non-orthogonal STBCs from cyclic division algebras (CDA) having largedimensions. Under i.i.d fading and perfect channel state information at the receiver (CSIR), our simulation results show that RTS based decoding of 12 X 12 STBC from CDA and 4-QAM with 288 real dimensions achieves i) 10(-3) uncoded BER at an SNR of just 0.5 dB away from SISO AWGN performance, and ii) a coded BER performance close to within about 5 dB of the theoretical MIMO capacity, using rate-3/4 turbo code at a spectral efficiency of 18 bps/Hz. RTS is shown to achieve near SISO AWGN performance with less number of dimensions than with LAS algorithm (which we reported recently) at some extra complexity than LAS. We also report good BER performance of RTS when i.i.d fading and perfect CSIR assumptions are relaxed by considering a spatially correlated MIMO channel model, and by using a training based iterative RTS decoding/channel estimation scheme.

Non-orthogonal space-time block codes (STBC) from cyclic division algebras (CDA) are attractive because they can simultaneously achieve both high spectral efficiencies (same spectral efficiency as in V-BLAST for a given number of transmit antennas) as well as full transmit diversity. Decoding of non-orthogonal STBCs with hundreds of dimensions has been a challenge. In this paper, we present a probabilistic data association (PDA) based algorithm for decoding non-orthogonal STBCs with large dimensions. Our simulation results show that the proposed PDA-based algorithm achieves near SISO AWGN uncoded BER as well as near-capacity coded BER (within 5 dB of the theoretical capacity) for large non-orthogonal STBCs from CDA. We study the effect of spatial correlation on the BER, and show that the performance loss due to spatial correlation can be alleviated by providing more receive spatial dimensions. We report good BER performance when a training-based iterative decoding/channel estimation is used (instead of assuming perfect channel knowledge) in channels with large coherence times. A comparison of the performances of the PDA algorithm and the likelihood ascent search (LAS) algorithm (reported in our recent work) is also presented.

In this paper,we present a belief propagation (BP) based algorithm for decoding non-orthogonal space-time block codes (STBC) from cyclic division algebras (CDA) having large dimensions. The proposed approachinvolves message passing on Markov random field (MRF) representation of the STBC MIMO system. Adoption of BP approach to decode non-orthogonal STBCs of large dimensions has not been reported so far. Our simulation results show that the proposed BP-based decoding achieves increasingly closer to SISO AWGN performance for increased number of dimensions. In addition, it also achieves near-capacity turbo coded BER performance; for e.g., with BP decoding of 24 x 24 STBC from CDA using BPSK (i.e.,n576 real dimensions) and rate-1/2 turbo code (i.e., 12 bps/Hz spectral efficiency), coded BER performance close to within just about 2.5 dB from the theoretical MIMO capacity is achieved.

A simple and efficient two-step hybrid electrochemical-thermal route was developed for the synthesis of large quantity of ZnO nanoparticles using aqueous sodium bicarbonate electrolyte and sacrificial Zn anode and cathode in an undivided cell under galvanostatic mode at room temperature. The bath concentration and current density were varied from 30 to 120 mmol and 0.05 to 1.5 A/dm(2). The electrochemically generated precursor was calcined for an hour at different range of temperature from 140 to 600 A degrees C. The calcined samples were characterized by XRD, SEM/EDX, TEM, TG-DTA, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectral methods. Rietveld refinement of X-ray data indicates that the calcined compound exhibits hexagonal (Wurtzite) structure with space group of P63mc (No. 186). The crystallite sizes were in the range of 22-75 nm based on Debye-Scherrer equation. The TEM results reveal that the particle sizes were in the order of 30-40 nm. The blue shift was noticed in UV-Vis absorption spectra, the band gaps were found to be 5.40-5.11 eV. Scanning electron micrographs suggest that all the samples were randomly oriented granular morphology.

In this paper, we propose a training-based channel estimation scheme for large non-orthogonal space-time block coded (STBC) MIMO systems. The proposed scheme employs a block transmission strategy where an N-t x N-t pilot matrix is sent (for training purposes) followed by several N-t x N-t square data STBC matrices, where Nt is the number of transmit antennas. At the receiver, we iterate between channel estimation (using an MMSE estimator) and detection (using a low-complexity likelihood ascent search (LAS) detector) till convergence or for a fixed number of iterations. Our simulation results show that excellent bit error rate and nearness-to-capacity performance are achieved by the proposed scheme at low complexities. The fact that we could show such good results for large STBCs (e.g., 16 x 16 STBC from cyclic division algebras) operating at spectral efficiencies in excess of 20 bps/Hz (even after accounting for the overheads meant for pilot-based channel estimation and turbo coding) establishes the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

The crystal structures of two ternary metal nucleotide complexes of cobalt, [Co(en)2(H2O)2]-[Co(5?-IMP)2(H2O)4]Cl2·4H2O (1) and [Co(en)2(H2O)2][Co(5?-GMP)2(H2O)4]Cl2·4H2O (2), have been analysed by X-ray diffraction (en = ethylenediamine, 5?-IMP = inosine 5?-monophosphate, and 5?-GMP = guanosine 5?-monophosphate). Both complexes crystallize in the orthorhombic space group C2221 with a= 8.725(1), b= 25.891(5), c= 21.212(5)Å, Z= 4 for (1) and a= 8.733(2), b= 26.169(4), c= 21.288(4)Å, Z= 4 for (2). The structure of (1) was solved by the heavy-atom method, while that of (2) was deduced from (1). The structures were refined to R values of 0.09 and 0.10 for 1 546 and 1 572 reflections for (1) and (2) respectively. The two structures are isomorphous. A novel feature is that the chelate ligand en and the nucleotide are not co-ordinated to the same metal ion. One of the metal ions lying on the two-fold a axis is octahedrally co-ordinated by two chelating en molecules and two water oxygens, while the other on the two-fold b axis is octahedrally co-ordinated by two N(7) atoms of symmetry-related nucleotides in a cis position and four water oxygens. The conformations of the nucleotides are C(2?)-endo, anti, and gauchegauche. In both (1) and (2) the charge-neutralising chloride ions are disordered in the vacant space between the molecules. These structures bear similarities to the mode of nucleotide co-ordination to PtII complexes of 6-oxopurine nucleotides, which are the proposed models for intrastrand cross-linking in DNA by a metal complex.

The ternary metal nucleotide complexes [Ni(en)1.3(H2O)1.4(H2O)2][Ni(5?-dGMP)2(en)0.7-(H2O)0.6(H2O)2]·7H2O (1) and [Ni(en)2(H2O)2][Ni(5?-GMP)2(H2O)4]·6H2O (2)(en = ethylenediamine, 5?-dGMP = 2?-deoxyguanosine 5?-monophosphate, 5?-GMP = guanosine 5?-monophosphate) have been prepared and their structures analyzed by X-ray diffraction methods. Both compounds crystallise in the space group C2221 with a= 8.810(1), b= 25.090(4), c= 21.084(1)Å, and Z= 4 for (1) and a= 8.730(1), b= 25.691(4), c= 21.313(5)Å, and Z= 4 for (2). The structures were deduced from the analogous CoIII complexes and refined by full-matrix least-squares methods to final R values of 0.087 and 0.131 for 1 211 and 954 reflections for (1) and (2) respectively. An interesting feature of the deoxyribonucleotide complex (1) is that en is not totally labilized from the metal centre on nucleotide co-ordination, as observed in corresponding ribonucleotide complexes. Apart from extensive intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonding, the structures are stabilized by significant intracomplex basebase and basesugar interactions. The nucleotides in both complexes have an anti base, C(2?)-endo sugar pucker, and gauchegauche conformation about the C(4?)C(5?) bond.

The reaction of pyrimidine-2-carbonitrile, NaN3 in the presence of Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O or MnCl2 center dot 4H(2)O leads to the formation of complexes Co(pmtz)(mu(1,3)-N-3)(H2O)](n) (1) and Mn(pmtz)(mu(1,3)-N-3)(H2O)](n) (2) respectively, under hydrothermal condition pmtz =5-(pyrimidyl)tetrazolate]. These two complexes have been fully characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 crystallizes in a non-centrosymmetric space group Aba2 in the orthorhombic system and is found to exhibit ferroelectric behavior, whereas complex 2 crystallizes in the P2(1)/c space group in the monoclinic system. Variable temperature magnetic characterizations in the temperature range of 2-300 K indicate that complex 1 is a canted antiferromagnet (weak ferromagnet) with T-c = 15.9 K. Complex 1 represents a unique example of a multiferroic coordination polymer containing tetrazole as a co-ligand. Complex 2 is a one-dimensional chain of Mn(II) bridged by a well-known antiferromagnetic coupler end-to-end azido ligand. In contrast to the role played by the end-to-end azido pathway in most of the transition metal complexes, complex 2 showed unusual ferromagnetic behavior below 40 K because of spin canting.

L-Lysine D-glutamate crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1) with a = 4.902, b = 30.719, c = 9.679 A, beta = 90 degrees and Z = 4. The crystals of L-lysine D-aspartate monohydrate belong to the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with a = 5.458, b = 7.152, c = 36.022 A and Z = 4. The structures were solved by the direct methods and refined to R values of 0.125 and 0.040 respectively for 1412 and 1503 observed reflections. The glutamate complex is highly pseudosymmetric. The lysine molecules in it assume a conformation with the side chain staggered between the alpha-amino and the alpha-carboxylate groups. The interactions of the side chain amino groups of lysine in the two complexes are such that they form infinite sequences containing alternating amino and carboxylate groups. The molecular aggregation in the glutamate complex is very similar to that observed in L-arginine D-aspartate and L-arginine D-glutamate trihydrate, with the formation of double layers consisting of both types of molecules. In contrast to the situation in the other three LD complexes, the unlike molecules in L-lysine D-aspartate monohydrate aggregate into alternating layers as in the case of most LL complexes. The arrangement of molecules in the lysine layer is nearly the same as in L-lysine L-aspartate, with head-to-tail sequences as the central feature. The arrangement of aspartate ions in the layers containing them is, however, somewhat unusual. Thus the comparison between the LL and the LD complexes analyzed so far indicates that the reversal of chirality of one of the components in a complex leads to profound changes in molecular aggregation, but these changes could be of more than one type.

The domination and Hamilton circuit problems are of interest both in algorithm design and complexity theory. The domination problem has applications in facility location and the Hamilton circuit problem has applications in routing problems in communications and operations research. The problem of deciding if G has a dominating set of cardinality at most k, and the problem of determining if G has a Hamilton circuit are NP-Complete. Polynomial time algorithms are, however, available for a large number of restricted classes. A motivation for the study of these algorithms is that they not only give insight into the characterization of these classes but also require a variety of algorithmic techniques and data structures. So the search for efficient algorithms, for these problems in many classes still continues.A class of perfect graphs which is practically important and mathematically interesting is the class of permutation graphs. The domination problem is polynomial time solvable on permutation graphs. Algorithms that are already available are of time complexity O(n2) or more, and space complexity O(n2) on these graphs. The Hamilton circuit problem is open for this class. We present a simple O(n) time and O(n) space algorithm for the domination problem on permutation graphs. Unlike the existing algorithms, we use the concept of geometric representation of permutation graphs. Further, exploiting this geometric notion, we develop an O(n2) time and O(n) space algorithm for the Hamilton circuit problem.

Research on structure and magnetic properties of polynuclear metal complexes to understand the structural and chemical factors governing the electronic exchange coupling mediated by multi-atom bridging ligands is of growing interest. Hydrothermal treatment of Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O with N-(4-carboxyphenyl)iminodiacetic acid N-4(H(3)CPIDA)] at 150 degrees C yielded a 3D coordination polymer of general formula Ni-3{N-4( CPIDA)}(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 6H(2)O (1). An analogous network of general formula Co-3{N-3(CPIDA)}(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 3H(2)O (2) was synthesized using N-(3-carboxyphenyl) iminodiacetic acid N-3(H(3)CPIDA)] in combination with Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O under identical reaction condition. Both the complexes contain trinuclear secondary building unit, and crystallized in monoclinic system with space groups C2/c (1) and P2(1)/c (2), respectively. Variable temperature magnetic characterization of these complexes in the temperature range of 2-300 K indicated the presence of overall ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic behavior for 1 and 2, respectively. Density functional theory calculations (B3LYP functional) were performed for further insight on the trinuclear units to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation on the overall magnetic behavior of the complexes 1 and 2. The integral diaphragm pressure transducers machined out of precipitation hardened martensite stainless steel (APX4) are widely used for propellant pressure measurements in space applications. These transducers are expected to exhibit dimensional stability and linearity for their entire useful life. These vital factors are very critical for the reliable performance and dependability of the pressure transducers. However, these transducers invariably develop internal stresses during various stages of machining. These stresses have an adverse effect on the performance of the transducers causing deviation from linearity. In order to eliminate these possibilities, it was planned to cryotreat the machined transducers to improve both the long-term linearity and dimensional stability. To study these effects, an experimental cryotreatment unit was designed and developed based on the concept of indirect cooling using the concept of cold nitrogen gas forced closed loop convection currents. The system has the capability of cryotreating large number of samples for varied rates of cooling, soaking and warm-up. After obtaining the initial levels of residual stress and retained austenite using X-ray diffraction techniques, the pressure transducers were cryotreated at 98 K for 36 h. Immediately after cryotreatment, the transducers were tempered at 510 degrees C for 3 h in vacuum furnace. Results after cryo treatment clearly indicated significant reduction in residual stress levels and conversion of retained austenite to martensite. These changes have brought in improvements in long term zero drift and dimensional stability. The cryotreated pressure transducers have been incorporated for actual space applications. The crystal state conformations of three peptides containing the a,a-dialkylated residues, a,adi n-propylglycine (Dpg) and a,@-di-n-butylglycine (Dbg), have been established by x-ray diffraction. Boc-Ala-Dpg-Ala-OMe ( I ) and Boc-Ala-Dbg-Ala-OMe (III) adopt distorted type II @-turn conformations with Ala ( I ) and Dpg/Dbg (2) as the corner residues. In both peptides the conformational angles at the Dxg residue (I: 4 = 66.23 J/ = 19.3'; III: 4 = 66S0, J. = 21 .la)deviate appreciablyfrom ideal values for the i + 2 residue in a type II @-turn. In both peptides the observed(N. 0) distances between the Boc CO andAla(3) NHgroups are far too long (I:3.44 k; III: 3.63 k) for an intramolecular 4 + 1 hydrogen bond. Boc-Ala-Dpg-Ala-NHMe (II)crystallizes with two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. Both molecules IIA and IIB adopt consecutive @-turn (type III-III in IIA and type III-I in IIB) or incipient 3,,,-helical structures, stabilized by two intramolecular 4 --t I hydrogen bonds. In all four molecules the bond angle N-C"-C' ( T ) at the Dxg residues are 2 1109 The observation of conformational angles in the helical region of 4,J/ space at these residues is consistent with theoretical predictions

Large-area PVDF thin films have been prepared and characterized for quasi-static and high frequency dynamic strain sensing applications. These films are prepared using hot press method and the piezoelectric phase (beta-phase) has been achieved by thermo-mechanical treatment and poling under DC field. The fabricated films have been characterized for quasi-static strain sensing and the linear strain-voltage relationship obtained is promising. In order to evaluate the ultrasonic sensing properties, a PZT wafer has been used to launch Lamb waves in a metal beam on which the PVDF film sensor is bonded at a distance. The voltage signals obtained from the PVDF films have been compared with another PZT wafer sensor placed on the opposite surface of the beam as a reference signal. Due to higher stiffness and higher thickness of the PZT wafer sensors, certain resonance patterns significantly degrade the sensor sensitivity curves. Whereas, the present results show that the large-area PVDF sensors can be superior with the signal amplitude comparable to that of PZT sensors and with no resonance-induced effect, which is due to low mechanical impedance, smaller thickness and larger area of the PVDF film. Moreover, the developed PVDF sensors are able to capture both A(0) and S-0 modes of Lamb wave, whereas the PZT sensors captures only A(0) mode in the same scale of voltage output. This shows promises in using large-area PVDF films with various surface patterns on structures for distributed sensing and structural health monitoring under quasi-static, vibration and ultrasonic situations.
