Research on structure and magnetic properties of polynuclear metal complexes to understand the structural and chemical factors governing the electronic exchange coupling mediated by multi-atom bridging ligands is of growing interest. Hydrothermal treatment of Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O with N-(4-carboxyphenyl)iminodiacetic acid N-4(H(3)CPIDA)] at 150 degrees C yielded a 3D coordination polymer of general formula Ni-3{N-4( CPIDA)}(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 6H(2)O (1). An analogous network of general formula Co-3{N-3(CPIDA)}(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 3H(2)O (2) was synthesized using N-(3-carboxyphenyl) iminodiacetic acid N-3(H(3)CPIDA)] in combination with Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O under identical reaction condition. Both the complexes contain trinuclear secondary building unit, and crystallized in monoclinic system with space groups C2/c (1) and P2(1)/c (2), respectively. Variable temperature magnetic characterization of these complexes in the temperature range of 2-300 K indicated the presence of overall ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic behavior for 1 and 2, respectively. Density functional theory calculations (B3LYP functional) were performed for further insight on the trinuclear units to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation on the overall magnetic behavior of the complexes 1 and 2. Reaction of formamide with Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O under hydrothermal condition in a mixture of MeOH/H2O forms a two-dimensional formate bridged sheet Ni(HCOO)(2)(MeOH)(2) (1). X-ray structure analysis reveals the conversion of formamide to formate which acts as a bridging ligand in complex 1 where the axial sites of Ni(II) are occupied by methanol used as a solvent. An analogous reaction in presence of 4,4'-bipyridyl (4,4'-bipy) yielded a three-dimensional structure Ni(HCOO)(2)(4,4'-bpy) (2). DC magnetic measurements as a function of temperature and field established the presence of spontaneous magnetization with T-c (Curie temperature) = 17 and 20.8 K in 1 and 2, respectively, which can be attributed due to spin-canting. DFT calculations were performed to corroborate the magnetic results of 1 and 2. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Photocatalytic degradation of municipal wastewater was investigated using reagent grade TiO2 and modified neodymium doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles. For the first time, surface modification of Nd3+ doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles were carried out with n-butylamine as surface modifier under mild hydrothermal conditions. The modified nanoparticles obtained were characterized by Powder XRD, FTIR, DLS, TEM, BET surface area, zeta potential and UV-Vis Spectroscopy. The characterization results indicated better morphology, particle size distribution and low agglomeration of the nanoparticles synthesized. It was found that photodegradation of wastewater using surface modified neodymium doped TiO2 nanoparticles was more compared to pure TiO2, which can be attributed to the doping and modification with n-butylamine.

High quality, single-crystalline alpha-MoO3 nanofibers are synthesized by rapid hydrothermal method using a polymeric nitrosyl-complex of molybdenum(II) as molybdenum source without employing catalysts, surfactants, or templates. The possible reaction pathway is decomposition and oxidation of the complex to the polymolybdate and then surface condensation on the energetically favorable 001] direction in the initially formed nuclei of solid alpha-MoO3 under hydrothermal conditions. Highly crystalline alpha-MoO3 nanofibers have grown along 001] with lengths up to several micrometres and widths ranging between 280 and 320 nm. The alpha-MoO3 nanofibers exhibit desirable electrochemical properties such as high capacity reversibility as a cathode material of a Li-ion battery.

A hydrothermal reaction of Mn(OAc)(2)center dot 4H(2)O, Co(OAc)(2)center dot 4H(2)O and 1,2,4 benzenetricarboxylic acid at 220 degrees C for 24 h gives rise to a mixed metal MOF compound, CoMn2(C6H3(COO)(3))(2)], I. The structure is formed by the connectivity between octahedral CoO6 and trigonal prism MnO6 units connected through their vertices forming a Kagome layer, which are pillared by the trimellitate. Magnetic susceptibility studies on the MOF compound indicate a canted anti-ferromagnetic behavior, due to the large antisymmetric DM interaction between the M2+ ions (M = Mn, Co). Thermal decomposition studies indicate that the MOF compound forms a tetragonal mixed-metal spinel phase, CoMn2O4, with particle sizes in the nano regime at 400 degrees C. The particle size of the CoMn2O4 can be controlled by varying the decomposition temperature of the parent MOF compound. Magnetic studies of the CoMn2O4 compound suggests that the coercivity and the ferrimagnetic ordering temperatures are dependent on the particle size.

The compounds Zn(C12H8N2)](2)C12N2H8(COO)(2)](2)center dot(C6H12O)center dot(H2O), I, Zn(C12H8N2)]C12N2H8(COO)(2)], II, Cd(C12H8N2)(H2O)]C12N2H8(COO)(2)]center dot(H2O), III, Zn(C10N2H8)]C12N2H8(COO)(2)]center dot 0.5(C10N2H8), IV, Cd(C12N2H8(COO)(2)center dot H2O], V, and Zn-3(mu(2)-O)(mu(3)-O)(3)]C12N2H8(COO)(2)], VI, have been synthesized by using a biphasic approach (I, III, V, VI) or regular hydrothermal method (II, IV). The compounds exhibit one (I and II), two (In), and three dimensionally (IV, V, VI) extended structures. The flexible azodibenzoate ligand gives rise to a 3-fold interpenetration (IV) when the synthesis was carried out using normal hydrothermal methods. The biphasic approach forms structures without any interpenetrations, especially in the three-dimensional structures of V and VI. Formation of Cd2O2 dimers in V and extended M-O(H)-M two-dimensional layers in VI suggests the subtle structural control achieved by the biphasic method. Transformation studies indicate that it is possible to transform I to II. Lewis acid catalytic studies have been performed to evaluate the role of the coordination environment in such reactions. All the compounds have been characterized by a variety of techniques that includes powder X-ray diffraction, infrared, thermogravitric analysis, UV-vis, photoluminescence studies.

A high-throughput screening was employed to identify new compounds in Cu(CH3COO)(2)center dot H2O-NIPA-heterocyclic ligand systems. Of the compounds identified, three compounds, Cu-3{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}(3)(C3N6H6)] (1), Cu-2(mu(3)-OH)(H2O){(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}(CN4H)]center dot-(H2O) (II), and Cu-2(mu(3)-OH)(H2O){(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2}-)(CN5H2)]center dot 2(H2O) (III), have been isolated as good quality single crystals by employing conventional hydrothermal methods. Three other compounds, Cu-2{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}-(CN4H)(H2O) (IIa), Cu-2{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}(CN5H2) (IIIa), and Cu-2{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}{(CN5H2)(2)}2H(2)O (IIIb), were identified by a combination of elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and IR spectroscopic studies, although their structures are yet to be determined. The single crystalline compounds were also characterized by elemental analysis, TGA, IR, UV vis, magnetic, and catalytic studies. The structures of the compounds have paddle wheel (I) and infinite Cu 0(H) Cu chains (II and HI) connected with NLPA and heterocyclic ligands forming two-(II) and three-dimensional (I and III) structures. The bound and lattice water molecules in 11 and 111 could be reversibly removed/inserted without affecting the structure. In the case of II, the removal of water gives rise to a structural transition, but the dehydrated phase reverts back to the original phase on prolonged exposure to atmospheric conditions. Magnetic studies indicate an overall antiferromagnetism in all of the compounds. Lewis acid catalytic studies indicate that compounds II and HI are active for cyanosilylation of imines.

Anatase titania nanotubes (TNTs) have been synthesized from P25 TiO2 powder by alkali hydrothermal method followed by post annealing. The microstructure analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the formation of anatase nanotubes with a diameter of 9-10 nm. These NTs are used to make photo anode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Layer by layer deposition with curing of each layer at 350 C is employed to realize films of desired thickness. The performance of these cells is studied using photovoltaic measurements. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used to quantitatively analyze the effect of thickness on the performance of these cells. These studies revealed that the thickness of TiO2 has a pronounced impact on the cell performance and the optimum thickness lies in the range of 10-14 mu m. In comparison to dye solar cells made of P25, TNTs based cells exhibit an improved open circuit voltage and fill factor (FF) due to an increased electron lifetime, as revealed by EIS analysis. Different phases of Eu3+ activated gadolinium oxide (Gd (OH)(3), GdOOH and Gd2O3) nanorods have been prepared by the hydrothermal method with and without cityl trimethyl ammonium bromide (GAB) surfactant. Cubic Gd2O3:Eu (8 mol%) red phosphor has been prepared by the dehydration of corresponding hydroxide Gd(OH)(3):Eu after calcinations at 350 and 600 degrees C for 3 h, respectively. When Eu3+ ions were introduced into Gd(OH)(3), lattice sites which replace the original Gd3+ ions, a strong red emission centered at 613 nm has been observed upon UV illumination, due to the intrinsic Eu3+ transition between D-5(0) and F-7 configurations. Thermoluminescence glow curves of Gd (OH)(3): Eu and Gd2O3:Eu phosphors have been recorded by irradiating with gamma source ((CO)-C-60) in the dose range 10-60 Gy at a heating rate of 6.7 degrees C sec(-1). Well resolved glow peaks in the range 42-45, 67-76,95-103 and 102-125 degrees C were observed. When gamma-irradiation dose increased to 40 Gy, the glow peaks were reduced and with increase in gamma-dose (50 and 60 Gy) results the shift in first two glow peak temperatures at about 20 degrees C and a new shouldered peak at 86 degrees C was observed. It is observed that there is a shift in glow peak temperatures and variation in intensity, which is mainly attributed to different phases of gadolinium oxide. The trapping parameters namely activation energy (E), order of kinetics (b) and frequency factor were calculated using peak shape and the results are discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Nanosized powders of TiO2 (anatase) were prepared by the hydrothermal method, acid-medium hydrolysis or by vacuum freeze-drying of sols, and annealing at temperatures <700-degrees-C. Photocatalytic activities of these powders in the mineralization of phenol, were evaluated in comparison to that of Degussa P25. Kinetic data indicated that surface hydroxylation had a retarding effect on the degradation of phenol. Formation of stable peroxotitanium species were observed on hydroxylated powders, whereas only V(Ti)-O- hole trap centres were detected by EPR on the heat treated samples. The data supports direct hole oxidation of the substrate preadsorbed on the photocatalyst, which is otherwise blocked by surface hydroxyls.

Five new open-framework compounds of gallium have been synthesized by hydrothermal methods and their structures determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The compounds, C8N4H26]Ga6F4(PO4)(6)], I, C5N3H11]Ga3F2(PO4)(3)]center dot H2O, II, C6N3H19]Ga-4(C2O4)(PO4)(4)(H2PO4)]center dot 2H(2)O, III, Ga2F3(HPO4)(PO4)]center dot 2H(3)O, IV, and C3N2H5](2)Ga-4(H2O)(3)(HPO3)(7)], V, possess three-dimensional structures. All the compounds are formed by the connectivity between the Ga polyhedra and phosphite/phosphate units. The observation of SBU-6 (I and II) and spiro-5 (IV) secondary building units (SBUs) are noteworthy. The flexibility of the formation of gallium phosphate frameworks has been established by the isolation of two related structures (I and II) from the same SBU units but different organic amines. Some of the present structures have close resemblance to the gallium phosphate phases known earlier. The compounds have been characterized by CHN analysis, powder XRD, IR, and TGA. By reacting cadmium salts with H2SO4 in the presence of organic amines or directly with amine sulfates under hydrothermal conditions, it has been possible to prepare three linear cadmium sulfates of linarite topology, with the compositions [H3N(CH2)(2)NH3](2)[CdCl2(SO4)][SO4].H2O, I, [HN(CH2)(6)NH][CdBr2(SO4)], II, [HN(CH2)(6)NH][CdCl2-(SO4)], III. A layered cadmium sulfate of composition [H3N(CH2)(3)NH3][Cd-2(H2O)(2)(SO4)(3)], IV, has also been obtained. These sulfates are the first examples of a family of organically templated metal sulfates with interesting structural features. In the linarite chains, the CdX4O2 (X = Cl, Br) octahedron shares two trans-edges to form an [Mphi(4)] (phi = anionic ligand) chain decorated by the SO4 tetrahedron that adopts a staggered arrangement on either side of the chain. IV is constructed by the fusion of four-membered ring ladders involving edge sharing between the sulfate tetrahedron and metal octahedron. IV appears to be the first member of a family of organically templated metal sulfates containing an octahedral-tetrahedral 2D net wherein the sulfate tetrahedron is connected at all four corners.

Reaction between CdCl2.H2O and NaH2PO4.H2O Under hydrothermal conditions gives rise to a new cadmium chlorophosphate of the formula Na-3[Cd4Cl3(HPO4)(2)(H2PO4)(4)] I. This material crystallizes in the orthorhombic system with space group Fmm2(no. 42). I has macroanionic layers of [Cd4Cl3(HPO4)(2)(H2PO4)(4)](3-) with Na+ ions in the interlamellar space. The discovery of such compounds suggests that metathetic reactions carried out under hydrothermal conditions may provide a novel route for the synthesis of new open-framework structures.
