The fracture behavior of concreteconcrete interface is characterized using acoustic emission (AE). Beams of different sizes having jointed interface between two different strengths of concrete are tested. The results of load, displacement, CMOD, AE-events and AE-energy are analyzed. The width of fracture process zone and damage zone are computed using AE-data and are found to be independent of size. It is observed that, as the difference in compressive strength of concrete on either side of interface increases, the load carrying capacity, number of AE-events, AE-energy, width of fracture process zone and damage zone decreases.

Preparation of Rb-beta -alumina was realized by the gel-to-crystallite conversion method. Reaction of hydrated aluminum hydroxide gel with RbOH in ethanol medium gave rise to the Rb+-inserted pseudoboehmite precursor under wet chemical conditions. The thermal decomposition of the precursor yielded Rb-beta -alumina. The Rb2O:Al2O3 ratio of monophasic Rb-beta -alumina ranged from 1:10 to 1:22. The extended stability in the compositional range is due to the fact that the conduction planes containing Rb+ and O2- ions can have lower occupancy of Rb+ ions for larger sized alkali ions, permitting the steric separation of the adjoining spinel blocks. High-resolution electron microscopy revealed that the decreasing occupancy of alkali ions in the conduction plane is balanced by changing widths of spinel blocks arising from the shift of tetrahedral Al3+ ions to octahedral sites and an accompanying increase in stacking defects. Flow through a rectangular Passage which is expanded suddenly into another rectangular duct of larger Cross-sectional area has been studied experimentally with stagnation Pressures from 3.5 atmospheres to 1.25 atmospheres. The length to height ratio of the enlarged duct varied from 5.769 to 1.923 and three models with length to height ratios 5.769, 3.846, and 1.923 were studied. The influence of stagnation Pressures and length to height ratio of the enlarged duct on base pressure and flow field mean pressures in the enlarged duct is discussed. The results of the present investigation indicate that the oscillatory nature of the mean pressure flow field in the enlarged portion with rectangular cross-section is appreciably different from that for circular cross-section at similar flow conditions.

Mining and blending operations in the high grade iron ore deposit under study are performed to optimize recovery with minimal alumina content while maintaining required levels of other chemical component and a proper mix of ore types. In the present work the regionalisation of alumina in the ores has been studied independently and its effects on global and local recoverable tonnage as well as on alternatives of mining operations have been evaluated. The global tonnage recovery curves for blocks (20m x 20m x 12m) obtained by simulation closely approximated the curves obtained theoretically using a change of support under the discretised gaussian model. Variations in block size up to 80m x 20m x 12m did not affect the recovery as the horizontal dimensions of the blocks are small in relation to the range of the variogram. A comparison of the local tonnage recovery curves obtained through multiple conditional simulations made with that obtained by the method of uniform conditioning of block grades on an estimate of panel 100m x 100m x 12m panel grade reveals comparable results only in panels which have been well conditioned and possesing an ensemble simulation mean close to the ordinary kriged value for the panel. Study of simple alternative sequence of mining on the conditionally simulated deposit shows that concentration of mining operations simultaneously on a single bench enhances the fluctuation in alumina values of ore mined.

integral to concrete mix proportioning are preparing trial mixes and balancing such factors as reasonable economy against placement, strength, and durability requirements. It is necessary to determine the water-cement and aggregate-cement ratios to satisfy workability requirements and obtain the target 28-day compressive strength. There is no direct, simple method by which the characteristics of cement, namely, fineness and chemical composition, can be considered in proportioning concrete mixes. Based on the physicochemical interactions in the cement-water system, a generalized approach for proportioning concrete mixes has been developed. Trial mix details (water-cement and aggregate-cement ratios) are derived based on any of the accepted methods for proportioning concrete mixes. The workability (compacting factor) and 28-day compressive strength reflect the physicochemical characteristics of cement and form the basis for reproportioning mixes. Based on this data, the final mix is proportioned using the three equations reported in this paper. This method can also be used to obtain a set of concrete mixes with wide ranges of workability and strength.

Root absorption and translocation of [C-14]fluchloralin were determined in groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) cv. TMV-2 and pigweed (Amaranthus viridis L.) grown in nutrient solution culture under greenhouse conditions. Root-applied fluchloralin toxicity to groundnut and pigweed was also examined. A growth reduction of 50% occurred in groundnut that received fluchloralin at a concentration of 9.0 mum. Root absorption was similar for both groundnut and pigweed at one day after application (DAA), but groundnut absorbed about twice the amount of fluchloralin during 4 and 8 days of continuous application, compared with pigweed. Groundnut absorbed 25% of the total applied fluchloralin after 8 days. Translocation to leaves from treated roots was low and roots of groundnut contained 80% of the total absorbed C-14, 8 DAA. Contrary to the observations in groundnut, transport from the roots and leaves following root application in pigweed was rapid: 1 and 8 DAA, leaves of pigweed contained 45 and 70% of the total absorbed C-14, respectively. Different patterns of fluchloralin metabolism were observed in pigweed and groundnut. Pigweed metabolized most of the fluchloralin absorbed by roots. The fluchloralin tolerance of pigweed could partially be accounted for by absorption, translocation and metabolism.

It is well known that fatigue in concrete causes excessive deformations and cracking leading to structural failures. Due to quasi-brittle nature of concrete and formation of a fracture process zone, the rate of fatigue crack growth depends on a number of parameters, such as, the tensile strength, fracture toughness, loading ratio and most importantly the structural size. In this work, an analytical model is proposed for estimating the fatigue crack growth in concrete by using the concepts of dimensional analysis and including the above parameters. Knowing the governed and the governing parameters of the physical problem and by using the concepts of self-similarity, a relationship is obtained between different parameters involved. It is shown that the proposed fatigue law is able to capture the size effect in plain concrete and agrees well with different experimental results. Through a sensitivity analysis, it is shown that the structural size plays a dominant role followed by loading ratio and the initial crack length in fatigue crack propagation. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Considering cement based composites as chemically bonded ceramics (CBC) the consequent strength development with age is essentially a constant volume solidification process, such that the hydrated gel particles fill the space resulting in the compatible gel space ratios. Analysis has been done of the extensively used graphical method of mix design (British method of mix design) i.e., the relation between the compressive strength and the free water - cement ratio. By considering the strength (S) at w/c 0.5 (S-0.5) as the reference state to reflect the synergetic effects between constituents of concrete a generalized relationship obtained is of the form {S/S-0.5} = a + b {1/(w/c)}.

The COREX melter gasifier is a countercurrent reactor to produce liquid iron. Directly reduced iron (DRI), noncoking coal, and other additives are charged to the melter gasifier at their respective temperatures, and O-2 is blown through the tuyeres. Functionally, a melter gasifier is divided into three zones: a moving bed, fluidized bed, and free board. A model has been developed for the moving bed, where the tuyere region is two-dimensional (2-D) and the rest is one-dimensional (1-D). It is based on multiphase conservation of mass, momentum, and heat. The fluidized bed has been treated as 1-D. Partial equilibrium is calculated for the free board. The calculated temperature of the hot metal, the top gas, and the chemistry of the top gas agree with the reported plant data. The model has been used to study the effects of bed height, injection of impure O-2, coal chemistry, and reactivity on the process performance.

In this paper, we propose a new design configuration for a carbon nanotube (CNT) array based pulsed field emission device to stabilize the field emission current. In the new design, we consider a pointed height distribution of the carbon nanotube array under a diode configuration with two side gates maintained at a negative potential to obtain a highly intense beam of electrons localized at the center of the array. The randomly oriented CNTs are assumed to be grown on a metallic substrate in the form of a thin film. A model of field emission from an array of CNTs under diode configuration was proposed and validated by experiments. Despite high output, the current in such a thin film device often decays drastically. The present paper is focused on understanding this problem. The random orientation of the CNTs and the electromechanical interaction are modeled to explain the self-assembly. The degraded state of the CNTs and the electromechanical force are employed to update the orientation of the CNTs. Pulsed field emission current at the device scale is finally obtained by using the Fowler-Nordheim equation by considering a dynamic electric field across the cathode and the anode and integration of current densities over the computational cell surfaces on the anode side. Furthermore we compare the subsequent performance of the pointed array with the conventionally used random and uniform arrays and show that the proposed design outperforms the conventional designs by several orders of magnitude. Based on the developed model, numerical simulations aimed at understanding the effects of various geometric parameters and their statistical features on the device current history are reported.

An attempt has been made to experimentally investigate the fracture process zone (FPZ) using Acoustic Emission (AE) method in High Strength Concrete (HSC) beams subjected to monotonically increasing load. Stress waves are released during the fracture process in materials, which cause acoustic emissions. AE energy released during the fracture of notched HSC beam specimens during Three Point Bend (TPB) tests is measured and is used to investigate the FPZ in the notched HSC beams having 28-day compressive strength of 78.0 MPa. The specimens are tested by Material Testing System (MTS) of 1200 KN capacity employing Crack Mouth Opening Displacement (CMOD) control at the rate of 0.0004 mmlsec in accordance with RILEM recommendations. A brief review on AE technique applied to concrete fracture is presented. The fracture process zone developed and the AE energy released during the fracture process in high strength concrete beam specimens are presented and discussed. It was observed that AE events containing higher energy are located around the notch tip. It may be possible to relate AE energy to fracture energy of concrete.

Estimation of creep and shrinkage are critical in order to compute loss of prestress with time in order to compute leak tightness and assess safety margins available in containment structures of nuclear power plants. Short-term creep and shrinkage experiments have been conducted using in-house test facilities developed specifically for the present research program on 35 and 45 MPa normal concrete and 25 MPa heavy density concrete. The extensive experimental program for creep, has cylinders subject to sustained levels of load typically for several days duration (till negligible strain increase with time is observed in the creep specimen), to provide the total creep strain versus time curves for the two normal density concrete grades and one heavy density concrete grade at different load levels, different ages at loading, and at different relative humidity’s. Shrinkage studies on prism specimen for concrete of the same mix grades are also being studied. In the first instance, creep and shrinkage prediction models reported in the literature has been used to predict the creep and shrinkage levels in subsequent experimental data with acceptable accuracy. While macro-scale short experiments and analytical model development to estimate time dependent deformation under sustained loads over long term, accounting for the composite rheology through the influence of parameters such as the characteristic strength, age of concrete at loading, relative humidity, temperature, mix proportion (cement: fine aggregate: coarse aggregate: water) and volume to surface ratio and the associated uncertainties in these variables form one part of the study, it is widely believed that strength, early age rheology, creep and shrinkage are affected by the material properties at the nano-scale that are not well established. In order to understand and improve cement and concrete properties, investigation of the nanostructure of the composite and how it relates to the local mechanical properties is being undertaken. While results of creep and shrinkage obtained at macro-scale and their predictions through rheological modeling are satisfactory, the nano and micro indenting experimental and analytical studies are presently underway. Computational mechanics based models for creep and shrinkage in concrete must necessarily account for numerous parameters that impact their short and long term response. A Kelvin type model with several elements representing the influence of various factors that impact the behaviour is under development. The immediate short term deformation (elastic response), effects of relative humidity and temperature, volume to surface ratio, water cement ratio and aggregate cement ratio, load levels and age of concrete at loading are parameters accounted for in this model. Inputs to this model, such as the pore structure and mechanical properties at micro/nano scale have been taken from scanning electron microscopy and micro/nano-indenting of the sample specimen.

The tension-softening parameters for different concrete-concrete interfaces are determined using the bimaterial cracked hinge model. Beams of different sizes having a jointed interface between two different strengths of concrete are tested under three-point bending (TPB). The load versus crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) results are used to obtain the stress-crack opening relation through an inverse analysis. In addition, the fracture energy, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity are also computed from the inverse analysis. The fracture properties are used in the nonlinear fracture mechanics analysis of a concrete patch-repaired beam to determine its load-carrying capacity when repaired with concrete of different strengths.

Frequency-domain scheduling and rate adaptation enable next-generation orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) cellular systems such as Long-Term Evolution (LTE) to achieve significantly higher spectral efficiencies. LTE uses a pragmatic combination of several techniques to reduce the channel-state feedback that is required by a frequency-domain scheduler. In the subband-level feedback and user-selected subband feedback schemes specified in LTE, the user reduces feedback by reporting only the channel quality that is averaged over groups of resource blocks called subbands. This approach leads to an occasional incorrect determination of rate by the scheduler for some resource blocks. In this paper, we develop closed-form expressions for the throughput achieved by the feedback schemes of LTE. The analysis quantifies the joint effects of three critical components on the overall system throughput-scheduler, multiple-antenna mode, and the feedback scheme-and brings out its dependence on system parameters such as the number of resource blocks per subband and the rate adaptation thresholds. The effect of the coarse subband-level frequency granularity of feedback is captured. The analysis provides an independent theoretical reference and a quick system parameter optimization tool to an LTE system designer and theoretically helps in understanding the behavior of OFDMA feedback reduction techniques when operated under practical system constraints.

Free energy barriers separating interfacial water molecules from the hydration layer at the surface of a protein to the bulk are obtained by using the umbrella sampling method of free energy calculation. We consider hydration layer of chicken villin head piece (HP-36) which has been studied extensively by molecular dynamics simulations. The free energy calculations reveal a strong sensitivity to the secondary structure. In particular, we find a region near the junction of first and second helix that contains a cluster of water molecules which are slow in motion, characterized by long residence times (of the order of 100 ps or more) and separated by a large free energy barrier from the bulk water. However, these ``slow'' water molecules constitute only about 5-10% of the total number of hydration layer water molecules. Nevertheless, they play an important role in stabilizing the protein conformation. Water molecules near the third helix (which is the important helix for biological function) are enthalpically least stable and exhibit the fastest dynamics. Interestingly, barrier height distributions of interfacial water are quite broad for water surrounding all the three helices (and the three coils), with the smallest barriers found for those near the helix-3. For the quasi-bound water molecules near the first and second helices, we use well-known Kramers' theory to estimate the residence time from the free energy surface, by estimating the friction along the reaction coordinate from the diffusion coefficient by using Einstein relation. The agreement found is satisfactory. We discuss the possible biological function of these slow, quasi-bound (but transient) water molecules on the surface.
