We study the effects of optically thin radiative cooling on the structure of radiatively inefficient accretion flows (RIAFs). The flow structure is geometrically thick, and independent of the gas density and cooling, if the cooling time is longer than the viscous time-scale (i.e. t(cool) greater than or similar to t(visc)). For higher densities, the gas can cool before it can accrete and forms the standard geometrically thin, optically thick Shakura-Sunyaev disc. For usual cooling processes (such as bremsstrahlung), we expect an inner hot flow and an outer thin disc. For a short cooling time the accretion flow separates into two phases: a radiatively inefficient hot coronal phase and a cold thin disc. We argue that there is an upper limit on the density of the hot corona corresponding to a critical value of t(cool)/t(ff)( similar to 10-100), the ratio of the cooling time and the free-fall time. Based on our simulations, we have developed a model for transients observed in black hole X-ray binaries (XRBs). An XRB in a quiescent hot RIAF state can transition to a cold blackbody-dominated state because of an increase in the mass accretion rate. The transition from a thin disc to a RIAF happens because of mass exhaustion due to accretion; the transition happens when the cooling time becomes longer than the viscous time at inner radii. Since the viscous time-scale for a geometrically thin disc is quite long, the high-soft state is expected to be long-lived. The different time-scales in black hole transients correspond to different physical processes such as viscous evolution, cooling and free fall. Our model captures the overall features of observed state transitions in XRBs.

In this article, we present the discovery of a metallo-organogel derived from a Tb3+ salt and sodium deoxycholate (NaDCh) in methanol. The gel was made luminescent through sensitization of Tb3+ by doping with 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) in micromolar concentrations. Rheological measurements of the mechanical properties of the organogel confirmed the characteristics of a true gel. Significant quenching of Tb3+ luminescence was observed in the deoxycholate gel matrix by 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (TNF), but not by several other polynitro aromatics. Microscopic studies (AFM, TEM and SEM) revealed a highly entangled fibrous network. The xerogels retained luminescent properties suggesting the possibility for application in coatings, etc.

In this paper, we consider the problem of finding a spectrum hole of a specified bandwidth in a given wide band of interest. We propose a new, simple and easily implementable sub-Nyquist sampling scheme for signal acquisition and a spectrum hole search algorithm that exploits sparsity in the primary spectral occupancy in the frequency domain by testing a group of adjacent subbands in a single test. The sampling scheme deliberately introduces aliasing during signal acquisition, resulting in a signal that is the sum of signals from adjacent sub-bands. Energy-based hypothesis tests are used to provide an occupancy decision over the group of subbands, and this forms the basis of the proposed algorithm to find contiguous spectrum holes. We extend this framework to a multi-stage sensing algorithm that can be employed in a variety of spectrum sensing scenarios, including non-contiguous spectrum hole search. Further, we provide the analytical means to optimize the hypothesis tests with respect to the detection thresholds, number of samples and group size to minimize the detection delay under a given error rate constraint. Depending on the sparsity and SNR, the proposed algorithms can lead to significantly lower detection delays compared to a conventional bin-by-bin energy detection scheme; the latter is in fact a special case of the group test when the group size is set to 1. We validate our analytical results via Monte Carlo simulations.

We report large scale deposition of tapered zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods on Si(100) substrate by using newly designed metal-organic complex of zinc (Zn) as the precursor, and microwave irradiation assisted chemical synthesis as a process. The coatings are uniform and high density ZnO nanorods (similar to 1.5 mu m length) grow over the entire area (625 mm(2)) of the substrate within 1-5 min of microwave irradiation. ZnO coatings obtained by solution phase deposition yield strong UV emission. Variation of the molecular structure/molecular weight of the precursors and surfactants influence the crystallinity, morphology, and optical properties of ZnO coatings. The precursors in addition with the surfactant and the solvent are widely used to obtain desired coating on any substrate. The growth mechanism and the schematics of the growth process of ZnO coatings on Si(100) are discussed. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this article we present the syntheses, characterizations, magnetic and luminescence properties of five 3d-metal complexes, Co(tib)(1,2-phda)](n)center dot(H2O)(n) (1), Co-3(tib)(2)(1,3-phda)(3)(H2O)](n)center dot(H2O)(2n) (2), Co-5(tib)(3)(1,4-phda)(5)(H2O)(3)](n)center dot(H2O)(7n) (3), Zn-3(tib)(2)(1,3-phda)(3)](n)center dot(H2O)(4n) (4), and Mn(tib)(2)(H2O)(2)](n)center dot(1,4-phdaH)(2n)center dot(H2O)(4n) (5), obtained from the use of isomeric phenylenediacetates (phda) and the neutral 1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene (tib) ligand. Single crystal X-ray structures showed that 1 constitutes 3,5-connected 2-nodal nets with a double-layered two-dimensional (2D) structure, while 2 forms an interpenetrated 2D network (3,4-connected 3-nodal net). Complex 3 has a complicated three-dimensional structure with 10-nodal 3,4,5-connected nets. Complex 4, although it resembles 2 in stoichiometry and basic building structures, forms a very different overall 2D assembly. In complex 5 the dicarboxylic acid, upon losing only one of the acidic protons, does not take part in coordination; instead it forms a complicated hydrogen bonding network with water molecules. Magnetic susceptibility measurements over a wide range of temperatures revealed that the metal ions exchange very poorly through the tib ligand, but for the Co(II) complexes the effects of nonquenched orbital contributions are prominent. The 3d(10) metal complex 4 showed strong luminescence with lambda(max) = 415 nm (lambda(ex) = 360 nm).

We report the controlled variation of luminescence of ZnO nanostructures from intense ultraviolet to bright visible light. Deliberate addition of surfactants in the reaction medium not only leads to growth anisotropy of ZnO, but also alters the luminescence property. ZnO nanoclusters comprising of very fine particles with crystallite sizes approximate to 15-22nm were prepared in a non-aqueous medium, either from a single alcohol or from their mixtures. Introduction of the aqueous solution of the surfactant helps in altering the microstructure of ZnO nanostructure to nanorods, nanodumb-bells as well as the luminescence property. The as-prepared powder material is found to be well crystallized. Defects introduced by the surfactant in aqueous medium play an important role in substantial transition in the optical luminescence. Chromaticity coordinates were found to lie in the yellow region of color space. This gives an impression of white light emission from ZnO nanocrystals, when excited by a blue laser. Oxygen vacancy is described as the major defect responsible for visible light emission as quantified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman analysis.

Various morphologies of Eu3+ activated gadolinium oxide have been prepared by hydrothermal method using hexadecylamine (HDA) as surfactant at different experimental conditions. The powder X-ray diffraction studies reveal as-formed product is hexagonal Gd(OH)(3):Eu3+ phase and subsequent heat treatment at 350 and 600 degrees C transforms to monoclinic GdOOH:Eu3+ and cubic Gd2O3:Eu3+ phases respectively. SEM pictures of without surfactant show irregular shaped rods along with flakes. However, in the presence of HDA surfactant, the particles are converted into rods of various sizes. The temperature dependent morphological evolution of Gd2O3:Eu3+ without and with HDA surfactant is studied. TEM micrographs of Gd(OH)(3):Eu3+ sample with HDA confirms smooth nanorods with various diameters in the range 20-100 nm. FTIR studies reveal that HDA surfactant plays an important role in conversion of cubic to hexagonal phases. Among these three phases, cubic phase Gd2O3:Eu3+ (lambda(ex) = 254 nm) show red emission at 612 nm corresponding to D-5(0)-> F-7(2) and is more efficient host than the monoclinic counterpart. The band gap for hexagonal Gd(OH)(3):Eu3+ is more when compared to monoclinic GdOOH:Eu3+ and cubic Gd2O3:Eu3+. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Pure cubic zirconia (ZrO2) nanopowder is prepared for the first time by simple low temperature solution combustion method without calcination. The product is characterized by Powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform Infra Red spectroscopy (FTIR) and Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). The PXRD showed the formation of pure stable cubic ZrO2 nanopowders with average crystallite size ranging from 6 to 12 nm. The lattice parameters were calculated from Rietveld refinement method. SEM micrograph shows fluffy, mesoporous, agglomerated particles with large number of voids. TEM micrograph shows honey comb like arrangement of particles with particle size similar to 10 nm. The PL emission spectrum excited at 210 nm and 240 nm consists of intense bands centered at similar to 365 and similar to 390 nm. Both the samples show shoulder peak at 420 nm, along with four weak emission bands at similar to 484, similar to 528, similar to 614 and similar to 726 nm. TL studies were carried out pre-irradiating samples with gamma-rays ranging from 1 to 5 KGy at room temperature. A well resolved glow peak at 377 degrees C is recorded which can be ascribed to deep traps. With increase in gamma radiation there is linear increase in TL intensity which shows the possible use of ZrO2 as dosimetric material. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The current understanding of wildfire effects on water chemistry is limited by the quantification of the elemental dissolution rates from ash and element release rate from the plant litter, as well as quantification of the specific ash contribution to stream water chemistry. The main objective of the study was to provide such knowledge through combination of experimental modelling, field data and end-member mixing analysis (EMMA) of wildfire impact on a watershed scale. The study concerns watershed effects of fire in the Indian subcontinent, a region that is typically not well represented in the fire science literature. In plant litter ash, major elements are either hosted in readily-soluble phases (K, Mg) such as salts, carbonates and oxides or in less-soluble carrier-phases (Si, Ca) such as amorphous silica, quartz and calcite. Accordingly, elemental release rates, inferred from ash leaching experiments in batch reactor, indicated that the element release into solution followed the order K > Mg > Na > Si > Ca. Experiments on plant litter leaching in mixed-flow reactor indicated two dissolution regimes: rapid, over the week and slower over the month. The mean dissolution rates at steady-state (R-ss) indicated that the release of major elements from plant litter followed the order Ca > Si > Cl > Mg > K > Na. R-ss for Si and Ca for tree leaves and herbaceous species are similar to those reported for boreal and European tree species and are higher than that from the dissolution of soil clay minerals. This identifies tropical plant litters as important source of Si and Ca for tropical surface waters. In the wildfire-impacted year 2004, the EMMA indicated that the streamflow composition (Ca, K, Mg, Na, Si, Cl) was controlled by four main sources: rainwater, throughfall, ash leaching and soil solution. The influence of the ash end-member was maximal early in the rainy season (the two first storm events) and decreased later in the rainy season, when the stream was dominated by the throughfall end-member. The contribution of plant litter decay to the streamwater composition for a year not impacted by wildfire is significant with estimated solute fluxes originating from this decay greatly exceed, for most major elements, the annual elemental dissolved fluxes at the Mule Hole watershed outlet. This highlighted the importance of solute retention and vegetation back uptake processes within the soil profile. Overall, the fire increased the mobility and export of major elements from the soils to the stream. It also shifted the vegetation-related contribution to the elemental fluxes at the watershed outlet from long-term (seasonal) to short-term (daily to monthly). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Gd1.96-xYxEu0.04O3 (x = 0.0, 0.49, 0.98, 1.47, 1.96 mol%) nanophosphors were synthesized by propellant combustion method at low temperature (400 degrees C). The powder X-ray diffraction patterns of as formed Gd1.96Eu0.04O3 showed monoclinic phase, however with the addition of yttria it transforms from monoclinic to pure cubic phase. The porous nature increases with increase of yttria content. The particle size was estimated from Scherrer's and W-H plots which was found to be in the range 30-40 nm. These results were in well agreement with transmission electron microscopy studies. The optical band gap energies estimated were found to be in the range 5.32-5.49 eV. PL emission was recorded under 305 nm excitation show an intense emission peak at 611 nm along with other emission peaks at 582, 641 nm. These emission peaks were attributed to the transition of D-5(0) —> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3) of Eu3+ ions. It was observed that PL intensity increases with increase of Y content up to x = 0.98 and thereafter intensity decreases. CIE color co-ordinates indicates that at x = 1.47 an intense red bright color can be achieved, which could find a promising application in flat panel displays. The cubic and monoclinic phases show different thermoluminescence glow peak values measured under identical conditions. The response of the cubic phase to the applied dose showed good linearity, negligible fading, and simple glow curve structure than monoclinic phase indicating that suitability of this phosphor in dosimetric applications. CaTiO3:Sm3+ (1-11 mol%) nanophosphors were successfully synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method LCS]. The structural and morphological properties of the phosphors were studied by using Powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM studies indicate that the size of the phosphor is similar to 20-35 nm. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of Sm3+ (1-11 mol%) doped CaTiO3 for NUV excitation (407 nm) was studied in order to investigate the possibility of its use in White light emitting diode (WLED) applications. The emission spectra consists of intra 4f transitions of Sm3+, such as (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(5/2) (561 nm), (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(7/2) (601-611 nm), (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(9/2) (648 nm) and (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(11/2) (703 nm) respectively. Further, the emission at 601-611 nm show strong orange-red emission and can be applied to the orange-red emission of phosphor for the application for near ultra violet (NUV) excitation. Thermoluminescence (TL) of the samples irradiated with gamma source in the dose range 100-500 Gy was recorded at a heating rate of 5 degrees C s(-1). Two well resolved glow peaks at 164 degrees C and 214 degrees C along with shouldered peak at 186 degrees C were recorded. TL intensity increases up to 300 Gy and thereafter, it decreases with further increase of dose. The kinetic parameters namely activation energy (E), frequency factor (s) and order of kinetics were estimated and results were discussed in detail. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dysprosium oxide (Dy2O3) nanopowders were prepared by co-precipitation (CP) and eco-friendly green combustion (GC) routes. SEM micrographs prepared by CP route show smooth rods with various lengths and diameters while, GC route show porous, agglomerated particles. The results were further confirmed by TEM. Thermoluminescence (TL) responses of the nanopowder prepared by both the routes were studied using gamma-rays. A well resolved glow peak at 353 degrees C along with less intense peak at 183 degrees C was observed in GC route while, in CP a single glow peak at 364 degrees C was observed. The kinetic parameters were estimated using Chen's glow peak route. Photoluminescence (PL) of Dy2O3 shows peaks at 481, 577,666 and 756 nm which were attributed to Dy3+ transitions of F-4(9/2)-H-6(15/2), H-6(11/2), H-6(11/2) and H-6(9/2), respectively. Color co-ordinate values were located in the white region as a result the product may be useful for the fabrication of WLED'S. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

ZnO:Eu (0.1 mol%) nanopowders have been synthesized by auto ignition based low temperature solution combustion method. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns confirm the nanosized particles which exhibit hexagonal wurtzite structure. The crystallite size estimated from Scherrer's formula was found to be in the range 35-39 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies reveal particles are agglomerated with quasi-hexagonal morphology. A blue shift of absorption edge with increase in band gap is observed for Eu doped ZnO samples. Upon 254 nm excitation, ZnO:Eu nanopowders show peaks in regions blue (420-484 nm), green (528 nm) and red (600 nm) which corresponds to both Eu2+ and Eu3+ ions. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum exhibits a broad resonance signal at g= 4.195 which is attributed to Eu2+ ions. Further, EPR and thermo-luminescence (TL) studies reveal presence of native defects in this phosphor. Using TL glow peaks the trap parameters have been evaluated and discussed. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. An investigation of a series of seven angular ``V'' shaped NPIs (1-7) is presented. The effect of substitution of these structurally similar NPIs on their photophysical properties in the solution-state and the solid-state is presented and discussed in light of experimental and computational findings. Compounds 1-7 show negligible to intensely strong emission yields in their solid-state depending on the nature of substituents appended to the oxoaryl moiety. The solution and solid-state properties of the compounds can be directly correlated with their structural rigidity, nature of substituents and intermolecular interactions. The versatile solid-state structures of the NPI siblings are deeply affected by the pendant substituents. All of the NPIs (1-7) show antiparallel dimeric pi-pi stacking interactions in their solid-state which can further extend in a parallel, alternate, orthogonal or lateral fashion depending on the steric and electronic nature of the C-4' substituents. Structural investigations including Hirshfeld surface analysis methods reveal that where strongly interacting systems show weak to moderate emission in their condensed states, weakly interacting systems show strong emission yields under the same conditions. The nature of packing and extended structures also affects the emission colors of the NPIs in their solid-states. Furthermore, DFT computational studies were utilized to understand the molecular and cumulative electronic behaviors of the NPIs. The comprehensive studies provide insight into the condensed-state luminescence of aggregationprone small molecules like NPIs and help to correlate the structure-property relationships.

This paper investigates the use of adaptive group testing to find a spectrum hole of a specified bandwidth in a given wideband of interest. We propose a group testing-based spectrum hole search algorithm that exploits sparsity in the primary spectral occupancy by testing a group of adjacent subbands in a single test. Our analysis allows one to identify the sparsity and SNR regimes where group testing can lead to significantly lower detection delays compared with a conventional bin-by-bin energy detection scheme; the latter is, in fact, a special case of the group test when the group size is set to 1 bin.
