Small additions of Cu to the SUS 304H, a high temperature austenitic stainless steel, enhance its high temperature strength and creep resistance. As Cu is known to cause embrittlement, the effect of Cu on room temperature mechanical properties that include fracture toughness and fatigue crack threshold of as-solutionized SUS 304H steel were investigated in this work. Experimental results show a linear reduction in yield and ultimate strengths with Cu addition of up to 5 wt.% while ductility drops markedly for 5 wt.% Cu alloy. However, the fracture toughness and the threshold stress intensity factor range for fatigue crack initiation were found to be nearly invariant with Cu addition. This is because the fracture in this alloy is controlled by the debonding from the matrix of chromium carbide precipitates, as evident from fractography. Cu, on the other hand, remains either in solution or as nano-precipitates and hence does not influence the fracture characteristics. It is concluded that small additions of Cu to 304H will not have adverse effects on its fracture and fatigue behavior. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Wear resistant coatings were produced on a permanent mould cast MRI 230D Mg alloy by (a) PEO in silicate based electrolyte, (b) PEO in phosphate based electrolyte, (c) hybrid coatings of silicate PEO followed by laser surface alloying (LSA) with Al and Al(2)O(3), and (d) hybrid coatings of phosphate PEO followed by LSA with Al and Al(2)O(3). Microstructural characterization of the coatings was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X(ray diffraction. The tribological behavior of the coatings was investigated under dry sliding condition using linearly reciprocating ball-on-flat wear test. Both the PEO coatings exhibited a friction coefficient of about 0.8 and hybrid coatings exhibited a value of about 0.5 against the AISI 52100 steel ball as the friction partner, which were slightly reduced with the increase in applied load. The PEO coatings sustained the test without failure at 2 N load but failed at 5 N load due to micro-fracture caused by high contact stresses. The hybrid coatings did not get completely worn off at 2 N load but were completely removed exposing the substrate at 5 N load. The PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the hybrid coatings and silicate PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the phosphate PEO coatings. Both the PEO coatings melted/decomposed on laser irradiation and all the hybrid coatings exhibited similar microstructure and wear behavior irrespective of the nature of the primary PEO coating or laser energies. SEM examination of worn surfaces indicated abrasive wear combined with adhesive wear for all the specimens. The surface of the ball exhibited a discontinuous transfer layer after the wear test. In this paper, an ultrasonic wave propagation analysis in single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is re-studied using nonlocal elasticity theory, to capture the whole behaviour. The SWCNT is modeled using Flugge's shell theory, with the wall having axial, circumferential and radial degrees of freedom and also including small scale effects. Nonlocal governing equations for this system are derived and wave propagation analysis is also carried out. The revisited nonlocal elasticity calculation shows that the wavenumber tends to infinite at certain frequencies and the corresponding wave velocity tends to zero at those frequencies indicating localization and stationary behavior. This frequency is termed as escape frequency. This behavior is observed only for axial and radial waves in SWCNT. It has been shown that the circumferential waves will propagate dispersively at higher frequencies in nonlocality. The magnitudes of wave velocities of circumferential waves are smaller in nonlocal elasticity as compared to local elasticity. We also show that the explicit expressions of cut-off frequency depend on the nonlocal scaling parameter and the axial wavenumber. The effect of axial wavenumber on the ultrasonic wave behavior in SWCNTs is also discussed. The present results are compared with the corresponding results (for first mode) obtained from ab initio and 3-D elastodynamic continuum models. The acoustic phonon dispersion relation predicted by the present model is in good agreement with that obtained from literature. The results are new and can provide useful guidance for the study and design of the next generation of nanodevices that make use of the wave propagation properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes.

Low cycle fatigue behavior of an O+B2 alloy was evaluated at 650 degrees C in ambient atmosphere under fully reversed total axial strain controlled mode. Three different microstructures, namely equiaxed O plus aged B2 (fine O plates in B2 matrix), lenticular O laths plus aged B2 and a pancake composite microstructure comprising equiaxed alpha 2, lenticular O and aged B2, were selected to study the effect of microstructure on low cycle fatigue behavior in this class of alloys. Distinct well-defined trends were observed in the cyclic stress-strain response curves depending on the microstructure. The cyclic stress response was examined in terms of softening or hardening and correlated with microstructural features and dislocation behavior. Fatigue life was analyzed in terms of standard Coffin-Manson and Basquin plots and for all microstructures a prevailing elastic strain regime was identified, with a single slope for microstructures equiaxed and composite and a double slope for lenticular O laths. Here, we report studies on the antioxidant activity and redox behavior of curcumin and its structurally modified synthetic analogues. We have synthesized a number of analogues of curcumin which abrogate its keto-enol tautomerism or substitute the methylene group at the centre of its heptadione moiety implicated in the hydride transfer and studied their redox property. From cyclic voltammetric studies, it is demonstrated that H-atom transfer from CH2 group at the center of the heptadione link also plays an important role in the antioxidant properties of curcumin along with that of its phenolic -OH group. In addition, we also show that the conversion of 1, 3-dicarbonyl moiety of curcumin to an isosteric heterocycle as in pyrazole curcumin, which decreases its rotational freedom, leads to an improvement of its redox properties as well as its antioxidant activity. Series of oedometer tests and micro-analytical studies (XRD, SEM and EDAX) have been carried out to investigate the influence of varying gypsum content on swell, compressibility and permeability of lime treated montmorillonitic soil after curing for different period. Immediate swell is observed on inundation of compacted samples with water and continuously increased with gypsum content. However, changes in swell are found to be marginal with curing. This is attributed to the formation and growth of ettringite crystals by ionic reactions of aluminum calcium-sulfate in the presence of water which is confirmed through detailed micro-analysis. The higher swell in uncured specimens and gradual reduction in swell with increase in curing periods are due to relative dominance of formation and growth of ettringite and cementitious compounds, respectively. Also, the ionic reaction products are found to bear a significant influence on the compressibility and permeability behavior. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Determination of shear strength of brick-mortar bed joint is critical to overcome the sliding-shear or joint-shear failure in masonry. In the recent past, researchers have attempted to enhance the shear strength and deformation capacity of brick-mortar bed joints by gluing fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite across the bed joint. FRP composites offer several advantages like high strength-to-weight ratio, and ease of application in terms of labor, time, and reduced curing period. Furthermore, FRP composites are desirable for strengthening old masonry buildings having heritage value because of its minimal interference with the existing architecture. A majority of earlier studies on shear strengthening of masonry available in the literature adopted masonry having the ratio of modulus of elasticity of masonry unit (Emu) to modulus of elasticity of mortar (Em) greater than one. Information related to shear behavior of FRP glued masonry composed of masonry units having Young's modulus lower than mortar is limited. Hence the present study is focused on characterizing the interfacial behavior of brick-mortar bed joint of masonry assemblages composed of solid burnt clay bricks and cement-sand mortar (E-mu/E-m ratio less than one), strengthened with FRP composites. Masonry triplets and prisms with bed joint inclined to loading axis (0 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees and 90 degrees) are employed in this study. Glass and carbon FRP composites composed of bidirectional FRP fabric with equal density in both directions are used for strengthening masonry. Masonry triplets are glued with glass and carbon FRP composites in two configurations: (1) both faces of the triplet specimens are fully glued with GFRP composites; and (2) both faces of the triplet specimens are glued with GFRP and CFRP composites in strip form. The performance of masonry assemblages strengthened with FRP composites is assessed in terms of gain in shear strength, shear displacement, and postpeak behavior for various configurations and types of FRP composites considered. A semianalytical model is proposed for the prediction of shear strength of masonry bed joints glued with FRP composites. A composite failure envelope consisting of a Coulomb friction model and a compression cap is obtained for unreinforced masonry and GFRP-strengthened masonry based on the test results of masonry triplets and masonry prisms with bed joints having various inclinations to the loading (C) 2015 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Based on Terzaghi's consolidation theory, percent of consolidation, U, versus the time factor, T, relationship for constant/linear excess pore water pressure distribution, it is possible to generate theoretical log10(H2/t) versus U curves where H is the length of the drainage path of a consolidating layer, and t is the time for different known values of the coefficient of consolidation, cν. A method has been developed wherein both the theoretical and experimental behavior of soils during consolidation can be simultaneously compared and studied on the same plot. The experimental log10(H2/t) versus U curves have been compared with the theoretical curves. The deviations of the experimental behavior from the theory are explained in terms of initial compression and secondary compression. Analysis of results indicates that the secondary compression essentially starts from about 60% consolidation. A simple procedure is presented for calculating the value of cv from the δ-t data using log10(H2/t) versus U plot.

The properties of the S-strain of cucumber mosaic virus (S-CMV) and the B-strain of tomato aspermy virus (B-TAV) have been studied with respect to their (i) size and sedimentation behavior, (ii) requirement of divalent metal ions for stability, (iii) sensitivity towards chloride salts and the anionic detergent sodium dodecyl sulfate, (iv) solubility in ammonium sulfate-containing buffers, and (v) pH-dependent structural transitions. The results indicate that the coat protein of B-TAV is more hydrophobic than the other well-studied strains of TAV and CMV. Circular dichroism and uv absorption studies reveal pH-dependent structural transitions, although these do not result in particle swelling. These transitions appear to alter the strength of protein-nucleic acid interactions in these viruses.

Microbiological quality of the treated wastewater is an important parameter for its reuse. The data oil the Fecal Coliform (FC) and Fecal Streptococcus (FS) at different stages of treatment in the Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in Delhi watershed is not available, therefore in the present study microbial profiling of STPs was carried out to assess the effluent quality for present and future reuse options. This Study further evaluates the water quality profiles at different stages of treatment for 16 STPs in Delhi city. These STPs are based on conventional Activated Sludge Process (ASP), extended aeration, physical, chemical and biological treatment (BIOFORE), Trickling Filter and Oxidation Pond. The primary effluent quality produced from most of the STPs was suitable for Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT). Extended Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) as a result Of low inflow to the STPS Was responsible for high turbidity, COD and BODs removal. Conventional ASP based STPs achieved 1.66 log FC and 1.06 log FS removal. STPs with extended aeration treatment process produced better quality effluent with maximum 4 log order reduction in FC and FS levels. ``Kondli'' and ``Nilothi'' STPs employing ASP, produced better quality secondary effluent as compared to other STPs based oil similar treatment process. Oxidation Pond based STPs showed better FC and FS removals, whereas good physiochemical quality was achieved during the first half of the treatment. Based upon physical, chemical and microbiological removal efficiencies, actual integrated efficiency (IEa) of each STP was determined to evaluate its Suitability for reuse for irrigation purposes. Except Mehrauli'' and ``Oxidation Pond'', effluents from all other STPs require tertiary treatment for further reuse. Possible reuse options, depending Upon the geographical location, proximity of facilities of potential users based oil the beneficial uses, and sub-soil types, etc. for the Delhi city have been investigated, which include artificial groundwater recharge, aquaculture, horticulture and industrial uses Such as floor washing, boiler feed, and cooling towers, etc. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Magnetron sputtering is a promising technique for the growth of oxide materials including ZnO, which allows deposition of films at low temperatures with good electrical properties. The current-voltage (I-P) characteristics of An Schottky contacts on magnetron sputtered ZnO, films have been measured over a temperature range of 278-358K. Both effective barrier height (phi(B,eff)) and ideality factor (n) are found to be a function of temperature, and this behavior has been interpreted on the basis of a Gaussian distribution of barrier heights due to barrier height inhomogeneities that prevail at the interface. Density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level is determined using a model based on the space charge limited current (SCLC). The dispersion in both real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constant at low frequencies, with increase in temperature is attributed to the space charge effect. Complex impedance plots exhibited two semicircles, which corresponds to bulk grains and the grain boundaries. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, the effect of rhamnolipid biosurfactant on the electrokinetic and rheological behavior of nanozirconia particles is reported. The effect of pH, concentration of biosurfactant, and solids loading on ζ-potential and rheological behavior was investigated. ζ-potential measurements showed that adsorption of biosurfactant shifted the iso-electric point of zirconia with increasing biosurfactant concentration. The surface of zirconia became more electronegative in the presence of biosurfactant indicating a strong interaction. Maximum charge was obtained in the presence of about 230 ppm of biosurfactant. Rheological tests at pH 7 revealed that the zirconia suspension is viscous at high solids loading and addition of biosurfactant decreased the viscosity substantially especially at high solids loading (>50 wt%). Sedimentation tests confirmed that the biosurfactant is a good dispersant for zirconia particles at pH values of 7 and above.

Sol-gel derived PbZrO3 (PZ) thin films have been deposited on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate and according to the pseudotetragonal symmetry of PZ, the relatively preferred (110)t oriented phase formation has been noticed. The room temperature P‐E hysteresis loops have been observed to be slim by nature. The slim hysteresis loops are attributed to the [110]t directional antiparallel lattice motion of Pb ions and by the directionality of the applied electric field. Pure PZ formation has been characterized by the dielectric phase transition at 235 °C and antiferroelectric P‐E hysteresis loops at room temperature. Dielectric response has been characterized within a frequency domain of 100 Hz–1 MHz at various temperatures ranging from 40 to 350 °C. Though frequency dispersion of dielectric behaves like a Maxwell–Wagner type of relaxation, ω2 dependency of ac conductivity indicates that there must be G‐C equivalent circuit dominance at high frequency. The presence of trap charges in PZ has been determined by Arrhenius plots of ac conductivity. The temperature dependent n (calculated from the universal power law of ac conductivity) values indicate an anomalous behavior of the trapped charges. This anomaly has been explained by strongly and weakly correlated potential wells of trapped charges and their behavior on thermal activation. The dominance of circuit∕circuits resembling Maxwell–Wagner type has been investigated by logarithmic Nyquist plots at various temperatures and it has been justified that the dielectric dispersion is not from the actual Maxwell–Wagner-type response.

Bis-bidentate Schiff base ligand L and its two mononuclear complexes [CuL(CH3CN)(2)]ClO4 (1)and [CuL(PPh3)(2)]ClO4 (2)have been prepared and thoroughly characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV-Vis, NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. In both the complexes the metal ion auxiliaries adopt tetrahedral coordination environment. Their reactivity, electrochemical and photophysical behavior have been studied. Complex 1 shows reversible Cu-II/I couple with potential 0.74 V versus Ag/AgCl in CH2Cl2. At room temperature L is weakly fluorescent in CH2Cl2, however in Cu(I)complexes 1 and 2 the emission in quenched. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Multilayers of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 (PMN)-PbTiO3 (PT) were deposited through pulsed laser ablation deposition with different periodicities (d=10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 nm) for a constant total thickness of the film. The presence of superlattice reflections in the x-ray diffraction pattern clearly showed the superlattice behavior of the fabricated structures over a periodicity range of 20-50 nm. Polarization hysteresis and the capacitance-voltage characteristics of these films show clear size dependent ferroelectric and antiferroelectric (AFE) characteristics. Presence of long-range coupling and strain in multilayers with lower periodicity (similar to 10 nm) exhibited a clear ferroelectric behavior similar to a solid solution of PMN and PT. Multilayers with higher periodicities (20-50 nm) exhibited antiferroelectric behavior, which could be understood from the energy arguments. On further increase of periodicity, they again exhibit ferroelectric behavior. The polarization studies were carried out beyond the Curie temperature T-c of PMN to understand the interlayer interaction. The interaction is changed to a ferroelectric-paraelectric interlayer and tends to lose its antiferroelectric behavior. The behavior of remnant polarization P-r and dP(r)/dT with temperature clearly proves that the AFE coupling of these superlattices is due to the extrinsic interfacial coupling and not an intrinsic interaction as in a homogeneous conventional AFE material. The evidence of an averaged behavior at a periodicity of similar to 10 nm, and the behavior of individual materials at larger periodicities were further confirmed through dielectric phase transition studies. The presence of AFE interfacial coupling was insignificant over the dielectric phase transition of the multilayers.
