The effect of electromagnetic stirring of melt on the final macrosegregation in the continuous casting of an aluminium alloy billet is studied numerically. A continuum mixture model for solidification in presence of electromagnetic stirring is presented. As a case study, simulations are performed for direct chill (DC) casting of an Al-Cu alloy and the effect of electromagnetic stirring on macrosegregation is analysed. The model predicts the temperature, velocity, and species distribution in the mold. As a special case, we have also studied the case in which dendritic particles are fragmented at the interface due to vigorous electromagnetic stirring. For this case, an additional conservation equation for the transport of solid fraction is solved. For modeling the resistance offered by moving solid crystals, a switching function in the momentum equations is used for variation of viscosity. The fragmentation and transport of dendritic particles has a profound effect on the final macrosegregation and microstructure of the solidified billet. It is found that the application of electromagnetic stirring in continuous casting of billets results in better temperature uniformity and macrosegregation pattern.

In this paper, we report a significant improvement in mechanical properties of near eutectic Nb-Si alloys by addition of Gallium (Ga) and control of microstructural length scale. A comparative study of two alloys Nb-18.79 at.%Si and Nb-20.2 at.%Si-2.7 at.%Ga were carried out. The microstructure refinements were carried out by vacuum suction casting in water cooled thick copper mold. It is shown that addition of Ga suppresses Nb(3)Si phase and promotes beta-Nb(5)Si(3) phase. The microstructural length scale and in particular eutectic spacing reduces significantly to 50-100 nm in suction cast ternary alloys. Compression test shows a strength of 2.8 +/- 0.1 GPa and plasticity of 4.3 +/- 0.03%. In comparison, the binary Nb-18.79 at.%Si alloy processed under identical conditions exhibit coarser length scale (300-400 nm) and brittle behavior. The fracture toughness of Ga containing suction cast alloy shows a value of 24.11 +/- 0.5 MPa root m representing a major improvement for bulk Nb-Si eutectic alloy. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. UV photodetectors based on ZnO nanorods prepared by two methods have been fabricated by a simple drop casting procedure. The detectors show good performance at 375 nm giving satisfactory values of responsivity, external quantum efficiency and photoconductive gain. The performance of ZnO nanorods prepared at low temperatures, containing a larger concentration of defects, is found to be superior. (C) 2011 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

The experimental observations of casting titanium in sodium silicate bonded zircon sand mould are presented in this paper. Metal-mould reactions, in general, involved dissolution of oxides in liquid titanium resulting in contamination of the casting. Minimal metal-mould reactions occurred when titanium was cast in zircon sand mould containing about 7.5 wt% of ZrO2. It has been further shown that the metal-mould reaction is considerably reduced if moulds were fired at high temperatures (> 1273K). This ensured elimination of moisture from the mould and also resulted in some beneficial changes in the mould chemistry. The reduction in metal-mould reaction is reflected in the decrease in oxygen and hydrogen contamination and decrease in hardness. Thus microhardness profile and oxygen analysis seems to provide a good index for evaluation of severity of metal-mould reaction. The method has been demonstrated to be satisfactory for casting titanium components.

Zinc-aluminium cast alloys (ZA alloys) exhibit good castability and mechanical properties but these alloys lack creep resistance and high temperature stability. One solution to improve these properties is to reinforce with ceramic particles or fibres, to result in MMCs. MMCs can be produced using casting technique involving infiltration. A systematic investigation was taken and this paper discusses the salient findings of the study on the ZA-27 alloy based MMCs produced through squeeze casting. (Reinforcing fibers: SAFFIL (chopped alumina) or mullite.)

Demand for cost-effective manufacturing techniques led to the development of near-net-shape processes. Squeeze casting is one such established effort. This process enjoys the combined merits of casting and forging. Squeeze casting imparts soundness comparable to that of wrought products while maintaining isotropic nature. Aluminum alloys and zinc alloys have been successfully processed through squeeze casting, but copper and copper alloys do not seem to have been attempted. Considering the capability of squeeze casting process, it is reasonable to expect properties different from that of conventionally cast copper. This paper presents the details of a systematic investigation wherein optimum process parameters for the squeeze casting of pure copper were established. Microstructure of squeeze-cast copper has been found to be significantly different from that of conventionally cast copper, and the dendrite arm spacing is much smaller. In addition to the room temperature mechanical properties, elevated temperature properties of copper are also appreciably improved by squeeze casting.

Numerous improvements in cupola design and operation have been made in the past to increase productivity, spout temperature and fuel efficiency. However, these improvements have been based on practice and experience. The present work establishes a scientific rationale for cupola design and operation using a mathematical model. The improved performance of a divided-blast cupola over the conventional one has been successfully explained by the model. Performance of a cupola, as influenced by the important design parameter--the distance of separation between the two rows of tuyeres and operational parameters, such as size of coke and metallic charge, blast rate and charge level--was analyzed. For a divided-blast cupola, an optimum distance of 800-900 mm separation between the two rows of tuyeres was found to be ideal, irrespective of the size of cupola.

Carbon monoxide, a major pollutant from the cupola, is poisonous and flammable. It can vary from 12 to 25% in cupola emissions. Carbon monoxide content in cupola emissions can be reduced by the post-combustion air input at the appropriate level into the stack. Scientific support to this has been provided by simulation of the combustion process in the cupola. Location and the extent of input of air for post combustion into the stack have been determined.

In this paper, we explore a novel idea of using high dynamic range (HDR) technology for uncertainty visualization. We focus on scalar volumetric data sets where every data point is associated with scalar uncertainty. We design a transfer function that maps each data point to a color in HDR space. The luminance component of the color is exploited to capture uncertainty. We modify existing tone mapping techniques and suitably integrate them with volume ray casting to obtain a low dynamic range (LDR) image. The resulting image is displayed on a conventional 8-bits-per-channel display device. The usage of HDR mapping reveals fine details in uncertainty distribution and enables the users to interactively study the data in the context of corresponding uncertainty information. We demonstrate the utility of our method and evaluate the results using data sets from ocean modeling.

This paper presents a modified cellulose acetate membrane prepared using a dry casting technique that can be used to perform lysis of erythrocytes and isolation of hemoglobin. Isolation of hemoglobin is thus achieved without the use of lysis buffers. Cellulose acetate (CA) membranes are embedded with ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3), which act as lysing agents. The presence of embedded salts is confirmed using EDS analysis. The pores in the CA membrane act as filters. The average pore size in these membranes is designed to be 1.5 mu M, as characterized by SEM analysis, so that they allow hemoglobin to pass through and block all other cells and unlysed erythrocytes present in blood. When a drop of blood is added to the membrane, the NH4Cl and KHCO3 embedded in the membrane dissolve in plasma and lyse the erythrocytes. The filtered hemoglobin is characterized using UV-Vis Spectroscopy. The results indicate extraction of higher concentration of hemoglobin compared with conventional methods.

The synthesis of cobalt-doped ZnO nanowires is achieved using a simple, metal salt decomposition growth technique. A sequence of drop casting on a quartz substrate held at 100 degrees C and annealing results in the growth of nanowires of average (modal) length similar to 200 nm and diameter of 15 +/- 4 nm and consequently an aspect ratio of similar to 13. A variation in the synthesis process, where the solution of mixed salts is deposited on the substrate at 25 degrees C, yields a grainy film structure which constitutes a useful comparator case. X-ray diffraction shows a preferred 0001] growth direction for the nanowires while a small unit cell volume contraction for Co-doped samples and data from Raman spectroscopy indicate incorporation of the Co dopant into the lattice; neither technique shows explicit evidence of cobalt oxides. Also the nanowire samples display excellent optical transmission across the entire visible range, as well as strong photoluminescence (exciton emission) in the near UV, centered at 3.25 eV. We have fabricated nano-Schottky diodes of CdTe QDs with platinum metal electrodes in metal-semiconductor-metal planar configuration by drop-casting. The observed high value of ideality factor (13.3) of the diode was possibly due to the presence of defects in colloidal QDs. We observed asymmetry and non-linear nature of I-V characteristics between forward and reverse directions, which has been explained in terms of size distributions of quantum dots due to coffee ring effect. The present paper considers the formation of crystalline phases during solidification and crystallisation of the Zr53Cu21Al10Ni8Ti8 alloy. Solidification was carried out by a copper mould casting technique, which yielded a partially crystalline microstructure comprising a `big cube phase' in a dendritic morphology and a bct Zr2Ni phase. Detailed high-resolution microscopy was carried out to determine possible mechanisms for the formation of the crystalline phases. Based on microstructural examinations, it was established that the dendrites grew by the attachment of atomistic ledges. The bct Zr2Ni phase, formed during solidification and crystallisation, showed various types of faults depending on the crystallite size, and its crystallography was examined in detail. It has been shown that the presence of these faults could be explained by anti-site occupancy in the bct lattice of the Zr2Ni phase.

Bulk metallic glass (BMG) matrix composites with crystalline dendrites as reinforcements exhibit a wide variance in their microstructures (and thus mechanical properties), which in turn can be attributed to the processing route employed, which affects the size and distribution of the dendrites. A critical investigation on the microstructure and tensile properties of Zr/Ti-based BMG composites of the same composition, but produced by different routes, was conducted so as to identify ``structure-property'' connections in these materials. This was accomplished by employing four different processing methods-arc melting, suction casting, semi-solid forging and induction melting on a water-cooled copper boat-on composites with two different dendrite volume fractions, V-d. The change in processing parameters only affects microstructural length scales such as the interdendritic spacing, lambda, and dendrite size, delta, whereas compositions of the matrix and dendrite are unaffected. Broadly, the composite's properties are insensitive to the microstructural length scales when V-d is high (similar to 75%), whereas they become process dependent for relatively lower V-d (similar to 55%). Larger delta in arc-melted and forged specimens result in higher ductility (7-9%) and lower hardening rates, whereas smaller dendrites increase the hardening rate. A bimodal distribution of dendrites offers excellent ductility at a marginal cost of yield strength. Finer lambda result in marked improvements in both ductility and yield strength, due to the confinement of shear band nucleation sites in smaller volumes of the glassy phase. Forging in the semi-solid state imparts such a microstructure. (c) 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we have carried out thin film characterization of poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene)-sultone (PProDOT-S), a derivative of electrochromic poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT). PProDOT-S was deposited onto transparent conducting oxide coated glass substrates by solution casting method. Single wavelength spectrophotometry is used to monitor the switching speed and contrast ratio at maximum wavelength (lambda (max)). The percentage transmittance at the lambda (max) of the neutral polymer is monitored as a function of time when the polymer film is repeatedly switched. This experiment gives a quantitative measure of the speed with which a film is able to switch between the two states i.e. the coloured and the bleached states. PProDOT-S films were switched at a voltage of 1 center dot 9 V with a switching speed of 2 s at lambda (max) of 565 nm and showed a contrast of similar to 37%. Cyclic voltammetry performed at different scan rates have shown the characteristic anodic and cathodic peaks. The structural investigations of PProDOT-S films by IR spectra were in good agreement with previously reported results. Raman spectra of PProDOT-S showed a strong Raman peak at 1509 cm (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) and a weak peak at 1410 cm (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) due to the C = C asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations of thiophene rings. The morphological investigations carried out by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) of polymer films have shown that these polymers are found to be arranged in dense packed clusters with non-uniform distribution having an average width and length of 95 nm and 160 nm, respectively.
