The paper deals with the classical problem of axi-symmetric transmission of low amplitude waves through a circular pipe containing a viscous liquid. Exact governing equations are identified and solved, the radial as well as the axial component of the velocity being considered. Attention is drawn to certain fallacies underlying the conventional approach. The parameters required in the formulation of the transfer matrix for a pipe have been evaluated. In order to evaluate the response at the terminal point of a branched system for a sinusoidal input at one of the ends, a general algorithm has been developed.

Using a singular perturbation analysis the nonplanar Burgers' equation is solved to yield the shock wave-displacement due to diffusion for spherical and cylindrical N waves, thus supplementing the earlier results of Lighthill for the plane N waves. The paper presents a unified picture of the structure of steady one-dimensional shock waves in partially ionized argon in the absence of external electric and magnetic fields. The study is based on a two-temperature three-fluid continuum approach using the Navier-Stokes equations as a model and taking account of nonequilibrium ionization. The analysis of the governing equations is based on the method of matched asymptotic expansions and leads to three layers: (1) a broad thermal layer dominated by electron thermal conduction; (2) an atom-ion shock structured by heavy-particle collisional dissipative mechanisms; and (3) an ionization relaxation layer in which electron-atom inelastic collisions dominate.

The theoretical analysis, based on the perturbation technique, of ion-acoustic waves in the vicinity of a Korteweg-de Vries (K-dV) equation derived in a plasma with some negative ions has been made. The investigation shows that the negative ions in plasma with isothermal electrons introduced a critical concentration at which the ion-acoustic wave plays an important role of wave-breaking and forming a precursor while the plasma with non-isothermal electrons has no such singular behaviour of the wave. These two distinct features of ion waves lead to an overall different approach of present study of ion-waves. A distinct feature of non-uniform transition from the nonisothermal case to isothermal case has been shown. Few particular plasma models have been chosen to show the characteristics behaviour of the ion-waves existing in different cases

The surface water waves are "modal" waves in which the "physical space" (t, x, y, z) is the product of a propagation space (t, x, y) and a cross space, the z-axis in the vertical direction. We have derived a new set of equations for the long waves in shallow water in the propagation space. When the ratio of the amplitude of the disturbance to the depth of the water is small, these equations reduce to the equations derived by Whitham (1967) by the variational principle. Then we have derived a single equation in (t, x, y)-space which is a generalization of the fourth order Boussinesq equation for one-dimensional waves. In the neighbourhood of a wave froat, this equation reduces to the multidimensional generalization of the KdV equation derived by Shen & Keller (1973). We have also included a systematic discussion of the orders of the various non-dimensional parameters. This is followed by a presentation of a general theory of approximating a system of quasi-linear equations following one of the modes. When we apply this general method to the surface water wave equations in the propagation space, we get the Shen-Keller equation.

The solution for a line source of oscillatory strength kept at the origin in a wall bounding a semi-infinite viscous imcompressible stratified fluid is presented in an integral form. The behaviour of the flow at far field and near field is studied by an asymptotic expansion procedure. The streamlines for different parameters are drawn and discussed. The real characteristic straight lines present in the inviscid problem are modified by the viscosity and the solutions obtained are valid even at the resonance frequency.

The special class of quasi-simple wave solutions is studied for the system of partial differential equations governing inviscid acoustic gravity waves. It is shown that these traveling wave solutions do not admit shocks. Periodic solutions are found to exist when there is no propagation in the vertical direction. The solutions for some particular cases are depicted graphically. Physics of Fluids is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

Numerical and experimental studies on transport phenomena during solidification of an aluminum alloy in the presence of linear electromagnetic stirring are performed. The alloy is electromagnetically stirred to produce semisolid slurry in a cylindrical graphite mould placed in the annulus of a linear electromagnetic stirrer. The mould is cooled at the bottom, such that solidification progresses from the bottom to the top of the cylindrical mould. A numerical model is developed for simulating the transport phenomena associated with the solidification process using a set of single-phase governing equations of mass. momentum, energy. and species conservation. The viscosity variation of the slurry, used in the model, is determined experimentally using a rotary viscometer. The set of governing equations is solved using a pressure-based finite volume technique, along with an enthalpy based phase change algorithm. The numerical study involves prediction of temperature, velocity, species and solid fraction distribution in the mould. Corresponding solidification experiments are performed, with time-temperature history recorded at key locations. The microstructures at various temperature measurement locations in the solidified billet are analyzed. The numerical predictions of temperature variations are in good agreement with experiments, and the predicted flow field evolution correlates well with the microstructures observed at various locations.

By using the method of operators of multiple scales, two coupled nonlinear equations are derived, which govern the slow amplitude modulation of surface gravity waves in two space dimensions. The equations of Davey and Stewartson, which also govern the two-dimensional modulation of the amplitude of gravity waves, are derived as a special case of our equations. For a fully dispersed wave, symmetric about a point which moves with the group velocity, the coupled equations reduce to a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with extra terms representing the effect of the curvature of the wavefront.

Time reversal active sensing using Lamb waves is investigated for health monitoring of a metallic structure. Experiments were conducted on an aluminum plate to study the time reversal behavior of A(0) and S-0 Lamb wave modes under narrow band and broad band pulse excitation. Damage in the form of a notch was introduced in the plate to study the changes in the characteristics of the time reversed Lamb wave modes experimentally. Time-frequency analysis of the time reversed signal was carried out to extract the damage information. A measure of damage based on wavelet transform was derived to quantify the hidden damage information in the time reversed signal. It has been shown that time reversal can be used to achieve temporal recompression of Lamb waves under broadband signal excitation. Further, the broad band excitation can also improve the resolution of the technique in detecting closely located defects. This is demonstrated by picking up the reflection of waves from the edge of the plate, from a defect close to the edge of the plate and from defects located near to each other. This study shows the effectiveness of Lamb wave time reversal for temporal recompression of dispersive Lamb waves for damage detection in health monitoring applications. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. The Mueller-Stokes formalism that governs conventional polarization optics is formulated for plane waves, and thus the only qualification one could require of a 4 x 4 real matrix M in order that it qualify to be the Mueller matrix of some physical system would be that M map Omega((pol)), the positive solid light cone of Stokes vectors, into itself. In view of growing current interest in the characterization of partially coherent partially polarized electromagnetic beams, there is a need to extend this formalism to such beams wherein the polarization and spatial dependence are generically inseparably intertwined. This inseparability brings in additional constraints that a pre-Mueller matrix M mapping Omega((pol)) into itself needs to meet in order to be an acceptable physical Mueller matrix. These additional constraints are motivated and fully characterized. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

In the present work, a numerical study is performed to predict the effect of process parameters on transport phenomena during solidification of aluminium alloy A356 in the presence of electromagnetic stirring. A set of single-phase governing equations of mass, momentum, energy and species conservation is used to represent the solidification process and the associated fluid flow, heat and mass transfer. In the model, the electromagnetic forces are incorporated using an analytical solution of Maxwell equation in the momentum conservation equations and the slurry rheology during solidification is represented using an experimentally determined variable viscosity function. Finally, the set of governing equations is solved for various process conditions using a pressure based finite volume technique, along with an enthalpy based phase change algorithm. In present work, the effect of stirring intensity and cooling rate are considered. It is found that increasing stirring intensity results in increase of slurry velocity and corresponding increase in the fraction of solid in the slurry. In addition, the increasing stirring intensity results uniform distribution of species and fraction of solid in the slurry. It is also found from the simulation that the distribution of solid fraction and species is dependent on cooling rate conditions. At low cooling rate, the fragmentation of dendrites from the solid/liquid interface is more.

Approximate solutions of the B-G-K model equation are obtained for the structure of a plane shock, using various moment methods and a least squares technique. Comparison with available exact solution shows that while none of the methods is uniformly satisfactory, some of them can provide accurate values for the density slope shock thickness delta n . A detailed error analysis provides explanations for this result. An asymptotic analysis of delta n for largeMach numbers shows that it scales with theMaxwell mean free path on the hot side of the shock, and that their ratio is relatively insensitive to the viscosity law for the gas.
