This is the first report on studies carried out in detail on high-pressure oxygen copolymerization (> 50 psi) of the vinyl monomers styrene and alpha-methylstyrene (AMS). The saturation pressure of oxygen for AMS oxidation, hitherto obscure, is found to be 300 psi. Whereas the ease of oxidation is more favorable for styrene, the rate and yield of polyperoxide formation are higher for AMS. This is explained on the basis of the reactivity of the corresponding alkyl and peroxy radicals. Below 50 degrees C, degradation of the poly(styrene peroxide) formed is about 2.5 times less than that observed above 50 degrees C, so much so that it gives a break in the rate curve, and thereafter the rate is lowered. Normal free radical kinetics is followed before the break point, after which the monomer and initiator exponents become unusually high. This is interpreted on the basis of chain transfer to the degradation products. The low molecular weight of polyperoxides has been attributed to the (i) low reactivity of RO(2)(.) toward the monomer, (ii) chain transfer to degradation products, (iii) facile cleavage of O-O bond, followed by unzipping to nonradical products, and (iv) higher stability of the reinitiating radicals. At lower temperatures, (i) predominates, whereas at higher temperatures, chiefly (ii)-(iv) are the case.

High microwave susceptibility of NaH2PO4 . 2H(2)O has been discovered, This hydrated acid phosphate of sodium can be heated upto 1000 K or more when exposed to 2.45 GHz microwaves. Using this, a novel microwave-assisted preparation of a number of important crystalline and glassy materials with NASICON-type chemistry has been accomplished in less than 8 min which is only a fraction of the time required for conventional synthetic procedures, The present single-shot approach to the preparation of phosphates is attractive in terms of its simplicity, rapidity, and general applicability, A ''step-ladder'' heating mechanism has been proposed to account for the high microwave absorbing ability of NaH2PO4 . 2H(2)O.

Quinones and their radical ion intermediates have been much studied by vibrational spectroscopy to understand their structure-function relationships in various biological processes. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of vibrational spectra in the structure-sensitive region of both the naphthoquinone (NQ) and 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (MQ, menaquinone) radical anions using time-resolved resonance Raman and ab initio studies. Specific vibrational mode assignments have been made to all the vibrational frequencies recorded in the experiment. It is observed that the carbonyl and C-C stretching frequencies show considerable coupling in NQ and MQ radical anions. Further, the asymmetric substitution present in MQ with respect to NQ shows important signatures in the radical anion spectrum. It is concluded that assignments of vibrational frequencies of asymmetrically substituted quinones must take into consideration the influence of asymmetry on structure and reactivity.

Chemical composition of rainwater changes from sea to inland under the influence of several major factors - topographic location of area, its distance from sea, annual rainfall. A model is developed here to quantify the variation in precipitation chemistry under the influence of inland distance and rainfall amount. Various sites in India categorized as 'urban', 'suburban' and 'rural' have been considered for model development. pH, HCO3, NO3 and Mg do not change much from coast to inland while, SO4 and Ca change is subjected to local emissions. Cl and Na originate solely from sea salinity and are the chemistry parameters in the model. Non-linear multiple regressions performed for the various categories revealed that both rainfall amount and precipitation chemistry obeyed a power law reduction with distance from sea. Cl and Na decrease rapidly for the first 100 km distance from sea, then decrease marginally for the next 100 km, and later stabilize. Regression parameters estimated for different cases were found to be consistent (R-2 similar to 0.8). Variation in one of the parameters accounted for urbanization. Model was validated using data points from the southern peninsular region of the country. Estimates are found to be within 99.9% confidence interval. Finally, this relationship between the three parameters - rainfall amount, coastline distance, and concentration (in terms of Cl and Na) was validated with experiments conducted in a small experimental watershed in the south-west India. Chemistry estimated using the model was in good correlation with observed values with a relative error of similar to 5%. Monthly variation in the chemistry is predicted from a downscaling model and then compared with the observed data. Hence, the model developed for rain chemistry is useful in estimating the concentrations at different spatio-temporal scales and is especially applicable for south-west region of India. The cytotoxicity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a major concern today well before its unusual physicochemical, mechanical, and electrical properties are fully exploited for commercial interests and subsequent mass production leading to greater possibilities for its exposure to humans and the environment. Contradictory reports on cytotoxicity of CNTs often appear in the literature and a mechanistic explanation of the reported toxicity remains obscure. We review here the conflicting results to focus categorically on an array of issues in CNT cytotoxicity. They include dispersion, aggregation status, coating or functionalization and immobilization, cellular uptake or internalization, purity in terms of metal catalyst contaminants, size and size distribution, surface area, surface chemistry and surface reactivity, cell types selected for experimentation as well as bioassay of nanotoxicity itself attesting as an issue in cytotoxicity. Recently a general agreement has emerged towards the potential toxicity of CNTs, although various paradigms explaining the mechanisms of CNT cytotoxicity continue to be elusive in the literature. A lack of synergy among various issues while studying cytotoxicity and most developed paradigms for the mechanism of CNT toxicity is highlighted.

In this paper, inhibition of the glutathione peroxidase activity of two synthetic organoselenium compounds, bis[2-(N,N-dimethylamino)benzyl]diselenide (5) and bis[2-(N,N-dimethylamino)benzyl]selenide (9), by gold(I) thioglucose (1), chloro(triethylphosphine)gold(I), chloro(trimethylphosphine)gold(I), and chloro(triphenylphosphine)gold(I) is described. The inhibition is found to be competitive with respect to a peroxide (H2O2) substrate and noncompetitive with respect to a thiol (PhSH) cosubstrate. The diselenide 5 reacts with PhSH to produce the corresponding selenol (6), which upon treatment with 1 equiv of gold(I) chlorides produces the corresponding gold selenolate complexes 11−13. However, the addition of 1 equiv of selenol 6 to complexes 11−13 leads to the formation of bis-selenolate complex 14 by ligand displacement reactions involving the elimination of phosphine ligands. The phosphine ligands eliminated from these reactions are further converted to the corresponding phosphine oxides (R3PO) and selenides (R3PSe). In addition to the replacement of the phosphine ligand by selenol 6, an interchange between two different phosphine ligands is also observed. For example, the reaction of complex 11 having a trimethylphosphine ligand with triphenylphosphine produces complex 13 by phosphine interchange reactions via the formation of intermediates 15 and 16. The reactivity of selenol 6 toward gold(I) phosphines is found to be similar to that of selenocysteine.

Coordination compounds of the polypyridines, 2,2 ' -bipyridine (bipy) and 1,10-penanthroline (phen) have offered renewed interest on account of their manifold applications and from the point of view of understanding their structure-reactivity relationships.1 Iron(II) reacts with them to form tris-complexes possessing spin-paired ground states. Cyanide ion greatly enhances the rate of displacement of bipy or phen to form the Schilt class of compounds. Fe(bipy)2(CN)2 and Fe(phen)2(CN)2. They display varying colours in solution depending upon the nature of the solvent and react reversibly with acids to form diprotonated species.2 Magnetic circular dichroism studies have been reported to describe their lowest electronic excitation.

This work reports on the synthesis of a wide range of ferrocenyl-substituted amino acids and peptides in excellent yield. Conjugation is established via copper-catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. Two complementary strategies were employed for conjugation, one involving cycloaddition of amino acid derived azides with ethynyl ferrocene 1 and the other involves cycloaddition between amino acid derived alkynes with ferrocene-derived azides 2 and 3. Labeling of amino acids at multiple sites with ferrocene is discussed. A new route to 1,1'-unsymmetrically substituted ferrocene conjugates is reported. A novel ferrocenophane 19 is accessed via bimolecular condensation of amino acid derived bis-alkyne 9b with the azide 2. The electrochemical behavior of some selected ferrocene conjugates has been studied by cyclic voltammetry.

A series of secondary and tertiary amide-substituted diselenides were synthesized and studied for their GPx-like antioxidant activities using H2O2 Cum-OOH, and tBuOOH as substrates and PhSH as thiol co-substrate.The effect of substitution at the free -NH group of the amide moiety in the sec-amide-based diselenides on GPx activity was analyzed by detailed experimental and theoretical methods. It is observed that substitution at the free -NH group significantly enhances the GPx-like activities of the sec-amide-based diselenides, mainly by reducing the Se center dot center dot center dot O nonbonded interactions. The reduction in strength of the Se center dot center dot center dot O interaction upon introduction of N,N-dialkyl substituents not only prevents the undesired thiol exchange reactions, but also reduces the stability of selenenyl sulfide intermediates. This leads to a facile disproportionation of the selenenyl sulfide to the corresponding diselenide, which enhances the catalytic activity. The mechanistic investigations indicate that the reactivity of diselenides having sec-or tert-amide moieties with PhSH is extremely slow; indicating that the first step of the catalytic cycle involves the reaction between the diselenides and peroxide to produce the corresponding selenenic and seleninic acids.

Different strategies for functionalization of the core region and periphery of core-shell type hyperbranched polymers (HBP) using the ``click'' reaction have been explored. For achieving periphera functionalization, an AB(2) + A-R-1 + A-R-2 type copolymerization approach was used, where A-R-1 is heptaethylene glycol monomethyl ether (HPEG-M) and A-R-2 is tetraethylene glycol monopropargyl ether (TEG-P). A very small mole fraction of the propargyl containing monomer, TEG-P, was used to ensure that the water-solubility of the hyperbranched polymer is minimally affected. Similarly, to incorporate propargyl groups in the core region, a new propargyl group bearing B-2-typ monomer was designed and utilized in an AB(2) + A(2) + B-2 + A-R-1 type copolymerization, such that the total mole fraction of B-2 + A(2) is small and their mole-ratio is 1: 1. Further, using a combination of both the above approaches, namely AB(2) + A(2) + B-2 + A-R-1 + A-R-2, hyperbranched structures that incorporate propargyl groups both at theperiphery and within the core were synthesized. Since the AB(2) monomer carries a hexamethylene spacer (C-6) and the periphery is PEGylated all the derivatized polymers form core-shell type structures in aqueous solutions. Attempts were made to ascertain and probe the location of the propargyl groups in these HBP's, by ``clicking'' azidomethylpyrene, onto them. However, the fluorescence spectra of aqueous solutions of the pyrene derivatized polymers were unable to discriminate between the various locations, possibly because the relatively hydrophobic pyrene units insert themselves into the core region to minimize exposure to water.

Metal hydrazine nitrate complexes of the type M(N2H4)Nn (NO3)2 where M = Mg, n = 2; M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn and Cd and n = 3; metal dihydrazine azide complexes of the type M(N2H4)2 (N3)2 where M = Mg, Co, Ni and Zn; and Mg(N2H4)2 (C1O4)2 have been prepared by dissolving the respective metal powders in the solution of corresponding ammonium salts (NO3, N3 and C1O4) in hydrazine hydrate. These hydrazine complexes were also prepared by the conventional method involving the addition of alcoholic hydrazine hydrate to the aqueous solution of metal salts. The hydrazine complexes have been characterised by chemical analysis, infrared spectra and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Impact sensitivities of hydrazine complexes were determined by the drop weight method. The reactivity of these hydrazine complexes does not change with the method of preparation.
