Powder-neutron diffraction study has been carried out at 300 and 10 K in La0.85Pb0.15Mn1-xTixO3 (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.15). The samples crystallize in the rhombohedral phase. The magnetic moment reduces nonlinearly with increase in Ti and correlates well with the reported behavior of T-C. The change in the moment and T-C could not be related to change in the one electron bandwidth, W. The reduction is attributed to the effect of dilution and thereby reducing the double exchange ferromagnetic interaction. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Neutron powder diffraction measurements on Ca2FeReO6 reveal that this double perovskite orders ferrimagnetically and shows anomalous lattice parameter behavior below T-C=521 K. Below similar to300 K and similar to160 K we observe that the high-T monoclinic crystal structure separates into two and three monoclinic phases, respectively. A magnetic field suppresses the additional phases at low T in favor of the highest-T phase. These manifestations of the orbital degree of freedom of Re 5d electrons indicate that these electrons are strongly correlated and the title compound is a Mott insulator, with competing spin-orbitally ordered states.

We present two online algorithms for maintaining a topological order of a directed acyclic graph as arcs are added, and detecting a cycle when one is created. Our first algorithm takes O(m 1/2) amortized time per arc and our second algorithm takes O(n 2.5/m) amortized time per arc, where n is the number of vertices and m is the total number of arcs. For sparse graphs, our O(m 1/2) bound improves the best previous bound by a factor of logn and is tight to within a constant factor for a natural class of algorithms that includes all the existing ones. Our main insight is that the two-way search method of previous algorithms does not require an ordered search, but can be more general, allowing us to avoid the use of heaps (priority queues). Instead, the deterministic version of our algorithm uses (approximate) median-finding; the randomized version of our algorithm uses uniform random sampling. For dense graphs, our O(n 2.5/m) bound improves the best previously published bound by a factor of n 1/4 and a recent bound obtained independently of our work by a factor of logn. Our main insight is that graph search is wasteful when the graph is dense and can be avoided by searching the topological order space instead. Our algorithms extend to the maintenance of strong components, in the same asymptotic time bounds.

The activity of NiAl2O4 in NiAl2O4MgAl2O4 solid solutions has been measured by using a solid oxide galvanic cell of the type, Pt, Ni + NiAl2O4 + Al2O3(α)/CaOZrO2/Ni + NixMg1−xAl2O4 + Al2O3(α). Pt, in the temperature range 750–1150°C. The activities in the spinel solid solutions show negative deviations from Raoult's law. The cation distribution in the solid solutions has been calculated using site preference energies independent of composition for Ni2+, Mg2+, and Al3+ ions obtained from crystal field theory and measured cation disorder in pure NiAl2O4 and MgAl2O4, and assumi g ideal mixing of cations on the tetrahedral and octahedral positions. The calculated values correctly predict the decrease in the fraction, α, of Ni2+ ions on tetrahedral sites for 1>x>0.25, observed by Porta et al. [J. Solid State Chem.11, 135 (1974)] but do not support their tentative evidence for an increase in α for x < 0.25. The measured excess free energy of mixing can be completely accounted for by using either the calculated or the measured cation distributions. This suggests that the Madelung energy is approximately a linear function of composition in the solid solutions. The composition of NiOMgO solid solutions in equilibrium with NiAl2O4MgAl2O4 solid solutions has been calculated from the results and information available in literature.

The distribution of zinc cation between crystallographically nonequivalent positions in ZnFe204 has been determined by anomalous X-ray scattering near the Zn K absorption edge. Measured intensity ratio with two energies close to the edge can be quantitatively explained only by assigning all zinc cations to the tetrahedral position in the approximately cubic close packed array of oxygen ions. A similar conclusion has also been reached for ZnxFe3-x04 solid solutions with x = 0.73, 0.54 and 0.35 employing the improved X-ray method. This is consistent with the EXAFS results which indicate an almost unchanged environmental structure around zinc cation in these solid solutions.

Although Al(1-x)Ga(x)N semiconductors are used in lighting, displays and high-power amplifiers, there is no experimental thermodynamic information on nitride solid solutions. Thermodynamic data are useful for assessing the intrinsic stability of the solid solution with respect to phase separation and extrinsic stability in relation to other phases such as metallic contacts. The activity of GaN in Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution is determined at 1100 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell: Ga + Al(1-x)Ga(x)N/Fe, Ca(3)N(2)//CaF(2)//Ca(3)N(2), N(2) (0.1 MPa), Fe. The solid-state cell is based on single crystal CaF(2) as the electrolyte and Ca(3)N(2) as the auxiliary electrode to convert the nitrogen chemical potential established by the equilibrium between Ga and Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution into an equivalent fluorine potential. Excess Gibbs free energy of mixing of the solid solution is computed from the results. Results suggest an unusual mixing behavior: a mild tendency for ordering at three discrete compositions (x = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75) superimposed on predominantly positive deviation from ideality. The lattice parameters exhibit slight deviation from Vegard's law, with the a-parameter showing positive and the c-parameter negative deviation. Although the solid solution is stable in the full range of compositions at growth temperatures, thermodynamic instability is indicated at temperatures below 410 K in the composition range 0.26 <= x <= 0.5. At 355 K, two biphasic regions appear, with terminal solid solutions stable only for 0 <= x <= 0.26 and 0.66 <= x <= 1. The range of terminal solid solubility reduces with decreasing temperature. The single-crystal X-ray structure of a cation-templated manganese-oxalate coordination polymer [NH(C2H5)(3)][Mn-2(ox)(3)]center dot(5H(2)O)] (1) is reported. In 1, triethylammonium cation is entrapped between the cavities of 2-D honeycomb layers constructed by oxalate and water. The acyclic tetrameric water clusters and discrete water assemble the parallel 2-D honeycomb oxalate layers via an intricate array of hydrogen bonds into an overall 3-D network. The magnetic susceptibility, with and without the water cluster, are reported with infrared and EPR studies.

We present two online algorithms for maintaining a topological order of a directed n-vertex acyclic graph as arcs are added, and detecting a cycle when one is created. Our first algorithm handles m arc additions in O(m(3/2)) time. For sparse graphs (m/n = O(1)), this bound improves the best previous bound by a logarithmic factor, and is tight to within a constant factor among algorithms satisfying a natural locality property. Our second algorithm handles an arbitrary sequence of arc additions in O(n(5/2)) time. For sufficiently dense graphs, this bound improves the best previous bound by a polynomial factor. Our bound may be far from tight: we show that the algorithm can take Omega(n(2)2 root(2lgn)) time by relating its performance to a generalization of the k-levels problem of combinatorial geometry. A completely different algorithm running in Theta (n(2) log n) time was given recently by Bender, Fineman, and Gilbert. We extend both of our algorithms to the maintenance of strong components, without affecting the asymptotic time bounds.

A molecular dynamics study of the dependence of diffusivity of the cation on ionic radii in molten AgI is reported. We have employed modified Parinello-Rahman-Vashistha interionic pair potential proposed by Shimojo and Kobayashi.(1) Our results suggest that the diffusivity of the cation exhibits an increase followed by a decrease as the ionic radius is increased. Several structural and dynamical properties are reported.

We have investigated quadratic nonlinearity (beta(HRS)) and linear and circular depolarization ratios (D and D', respectively) of a series of 1:1 complexes of tropyliumtetrafluoroborate as a cation and methyl-substituted benzenes as pi-donors by making polarization resolved hyper-Rayleigh scattering measurements in solution. The measured D and D' values are much lower than the values expected from a typical sandwich or a T-shaped geometry of a complex. In the cation-pi complexes studied here, the D value varies from 1.36 to 1.46 and D' from 1.62 to 1.72 depending on the number of methyl substitutions on the benzene ring. In order to probe it further, beta, D and D' were computed using the Zerner intermediate neglect of differential overlap-correction vector self-consistent reaction field technique including single and double configuration interactions in the absence and presence of BF4- anion. In the absence of the anion, the calculated value of D varies from 4.20 to 4.60 and that of D' from 2.45 to 2.72 which disagree with experimental values. However, by arranging three cation-pi BF4- complexes in a trigonal symmetry, the computed values are brought to agreement with experiments. When such an arrangement was not considered, the calculated beta values were lower than the experimental values by more than a factor of two. This unprecedented influence of the otherwise ``unimportant'' anion in solution on the beta value and depolarization ratios of these cation-pi complexes is highlighted and emphasized in this paper.
