Pulse Forming Line (PFL) based high voltage pulsed power systems are well suited for low impedance High Power Microwave (HPM) sources such as a virtual cathode oscillator (VIRCATOR) operating in nanosecond regimes. The system under development consists of a primary voltage source that charges the capacitor bank of a Marx pulser over a long time duration. The Marx pulser output is then conditioned by a PFL to match the requirement of the HPM diode load. This article describes the design and construction of an oil insulated pulse forming line for a REB (Relativistic Electron Beam) diode used in a VIRCATOR for the generation of high power microwaves. Design of a 250 kV/10 kA/60 ns PFL, including the PSPICE simulation for various load conditions are described.

In this paper, we present a novel formulation for performing topology optimization of electrostatically actuated constrained elastic structures. We propose a new electrostatic-elastic formulation that uses the leaky capacitor model and material interpolation to define the material state at every point of a given design domain continuously between conductor and void states. The new formulation accurately captures the physical behavior when the material in between a conductor and a void is present during the iterative process of topology optimization. The method then uses the optimality criteria method to solve the optimization problem by iteratively pushing the state of the domain towards that of a conductor or a void in the appropriate regions. We present examples to illustrate the ability of the method in creating the stiffest structure under electrostatic force for different boundary conditions.

X-ray powder diffraction along with differential thermal analysis carried out on the as-quenched samples in the 3BaO–3TiO2–B2O3 system confirmed their amorphous and glassy nature, respectively. The dielectric constants in the 1 kHz–1 MHz frequency range were measured as a function of temperature (323–748 K). The dielectric constant and loss were found to be frequency independent in the 323–473 K temperature range. The temperature coefficient of dielectric constant was estimated using Havinga’s formula and found to be 16 ppm K−1. The electrical relaxation was rationalized using the electric modulus formalism. The dielectric constant and loss were 17±0.5 and 0.005±0.001, respectively at 323 K in the 1 kHz–1 MHz frequency range which may be of considerable interest to capacitor industry.

The basic concepts of tuned half-wave lines were covered by Hubert and Gent [1]. In this paper the problem of overvoltages during faults and the stability of the system incorporating such tuned lines are discussed. The type of tuning bank and the line arrangements that will be satisfactory from the point of view of stability are suggested. The behavior of a line tuned by distributed capacitor is analyzed, and its performance is compared with the other type of tuned line.

The paper presents an analysis of ferro-oscillations in capacitor voltage transformers and series-compensated e.h.v. lines. The dual-input describing function is adopted to show the regions of existence and the influence of system parameters on such oscillations. A complete analytical method suitable for digital computation has been developed for determining the amplitudes of these oscillations.

The effectiveness of series capacitors used with long distance transmission lines in improving system stability is analyzed. Compensation efficiency is defined as the effectiveness of series capacitors. The influence of various factors on compensation efficiency such as capacitor location, line length, and degree of series compensation is investigated. Proper use of shunt reactors with series capacitors, in addition to limiting power frequency over- voltages, increases the maximum power transfer. Analytical expressions are included to aid in the calculation of compensation efficiency for a few typical cases. Curves are also presented indicating the critical value of shunt Mvar required for various degrees of series compensation and line lengths.

This paper describes an application of a FACTS supplementary controller for damping of inter area oscillations in power systems. A fuzzy logic controller is designed to regulate a thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC) in a multimachine environment to produce additional damping in the system. Simultaneous application of the excitation controller and proposed controller is also investigated. Simulation studies have been done with different types of disturbances and the results are shown to be consistent with the expected performance of the supplementary controller.

This study presents a novel magnetic arm-switch-based integrated magnetic circuit for a three-phase series-shunt compensated uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The magnetic circuit acts as a common interacting field for a number of energy ports, viz., series inverter, shunt inverter, grid and load. The magnetic arm-switching technique ensures equivalent series or shunt connection between the inverters. In normal grid mode (stabiliser mode), the series inverter is used for series voltage correction and the shunt one for current correction. The inverters and the load are effectively connected in parallel when the grid power is not available. These inverters are then used to share the load power. The operation of the inverters in parallel is ensured by the magnetic arm-switching technique. This study also includes modelling of the magnetic circuit. A graphical technique called bond graph is used to model the system. In this model, the magnetic circuit is represented in terms of gyrator-capacitors. Therefore the model is also termed as gyrator-capacitor model. The model is used to extract the dynamic equations that are used to simulate the system using MATLAB/SIMULINK. This study also discusses a synchronously rotating reference frame-based control technique that is used for the control of the series and shunt inverters in different operating modes. Finally, the gyrator-capacitor model is validated by comparing the simulated and experimental results.

Controlled waveform magnets (CWMs) are a class of pulsed magnets whose pulse shape with time can be programmed by the user. With a CWM, the user gains control not only over the magnitude of the field but also over its rate of change. In this work we present a table-top CWM, driven by a capacitor bank, capable of producing virtually any user-shaped magnetic field waveform up to 10 tesla. Insulated gate bipolar transistor chips have been paralleled to form the high current switch and paralleled chips of SiC Schottky diodes form the crowbar diode module. Sample controlled waveforms including flat-tops up to 10 tesla and some triangular magnetic field pulses have been successfully generated for 10-20 ms with a ripple < 1%. DC reactive magnetron sputtering technique was employed for deposition of titanium dioxide (TiO2) films. The films were formed on Corning glass and p-Si (100) substrates by sputtering of titanium target in an oxygen partial pressure of 6x10-2 Pa and at different substrate temperatures in the range 303 673 K. The films formed at 303 K were X-ray amorphous whereas those deposited at substrate temperatures?=?473 K were transformed into polycrystalline nature with anatase phase of TiO2. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic studies confirmed the presence of characteristic bonding configuration of TiO2. The surface morphology of the films was significantly influenced by the substrate temperature. MOS capacitor with Al/TiO2/p-Si sandwich structure was fabricated and performed currentvoltage and capacitancevoltage characteristics. At an applied gate voltage of 1.5 V, the leakage current density of the device decreased from 1.8?x?10-6 to 5.4?x?10-8 A/cm2 with the increase of substrate temperature from 303 to 673 K. The electrical conduction in the MOS structure was more predominant with Schottky emission and Fowler-Nordheim conduction. The dielectric constant (at 1 MHz) of the films increased from 6 to 20 with increase of substrate temperature. The optical band gap of the films increased from 3.50 to 3.56 eV and refractive index from 2.20 to 2.37 with the increase of substrate temperature from 303 to 673 K. A new type of multi-port isolated bidirectional DC-DC converter is proposed in this study. In the proposed converter, transfer of power takes place through addition of magnetomotive forces generated by multiple windings on a common transformer core. This eliminates the need for a centralised storage capacitor to interface all the ports. Hence, the requirement of an additional power transfer stage from the centralised capacitor can also be eliminated. The converter can be used for a multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) system. A pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy for controlling simultaneous power flow in the MIMO converter is also proposed. The proposed PWM scheme works in the discontinuous conduction mode. The leakage inductance can be chosen to aid power transfer. By using the proposed converter topology and PWM scheme, the need to compute power flow equations to determine the magnitude and direction of power flow between ports is alleviated. Instead, a simple controller structure based on average current control can be used to control the power flow. This study discusses the operating phases of the proposed multi-port converter along with its PWM scheme, the design process for each of the ports and finally experimental waveforms that validate the multi-port scheme.

A new hybrid five-level inverter topology with common-mode voltage (CMV) elimination for induction motor drive is proposed in this paper. This topology has only one dc source, and different voltage levels are generated by using this voltage source along with floating capacitors charged to asymmetrical voltage levels. The pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme employed in this topology balances the capacitor voltages at the required levels at any power factor and modulation index while eliminating the CMV. This inverter has good fault-tolerant capability as it can be operated in three-or two-level mode with CMV elimination, in case of any failure in the H-bridges. More voltage levels with CMV elimination can be realized from this topology but only in a limited range of modulation index and power factor. Extensive simulation is done to validate the PWM technique for CMV elimination and balancing of the capacitor voltages. The experimental verification of the proposed inverter-fed induction motor is carried out in the linear modulation and overmodulation regions. The steady-state and transient operations of the drive are verified. The dynamics of the capacitor voltage balancing is also tested. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed topology can be considered for industrial drive applications.

Dodecagonal (12-sided) space vector pulsewidth modulation (PWM) schemes are characterized by the complete absence of (6n +/- 1)th-order harmonics (for odd n) in the phase voltages, within the linear modulation range and beyond, including over-modulation. This paper presents a new topology suitable for the realization of such multilevel inverter schemes for induction motor (IM) drives, by cascading two-level inverters with flying-capacitor-inverter fed floating H-bridge cells. Now, any standard IM may be used to get the dodecagonal operation which hitherto was possible only with open-end winding IM. To minimize the current total harmonic distortion (THD), a strategy for synchronous PWM is also proposed. It is shown that the proposed method is capable of obtaining better THD figures, compared to conventional dodecagonal schemes. The topology and the PWM strategy are validated through analysis and subsequently verified experimentally.
A nine-level inverter topology for medium-voltage induction motor drive with open-end stator winding
Resumo:
A new scheme for nine-level voltage space-vector generation for medium-voltage induction motor (IM) drives with open-end stator winding is presented in this paper. The proposed nine-level power converter topology consists of two conventional three-phase two-level voltage source inverters powered by isolated dc sources and six floating-capacitor-connected H-bridges. The H-bridge capacitor voltages are effectively maintained at the required asymmetrical levels by employing a space vector modulation (SVPWM) based control strategy. An interesting feature of this topology is its ability to function in five-or three-level mode, in the entire modulation range, at full-power rating, in the event of any failure in the H-bridges. This feature significantly improves the reliability of the proposed drive system. Each leg of the three-phase two-level inverters used in this topology switches only for a half cycle of the reference voltage waveform. Hence, the effective switching frequency is reduced by half, resulting in switching loss reduction in high-voltage devices. The transient as well as the steady-state performance of the proposed nine-level inverter-fed IM drive system is experimentally verified in the entire modulation range including the overmodulation region.

Multiferroic materials are characterized by simultaneous magnetic and ferroelectric ordering making them good candidates for magneto-electrical applications. We conducted thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements in magnetic fields up to 14 T on perovskitic GdMnO3 by highresolution capacitive dilatometry in an effort to determine all longitudinal and transversal components of the magnetostriction tensor. Below the ordering temperature T (N) = 42 K, i.e., within the different complex (incommensurate or complex) antiferromagnetic phases, lattice distortions of up to 100 ppm have been found. Although no change of the lattice symmetry occurs, the measurements reveal strong magneto-structural phenomena, especially in the incommensurate sinusoidal antiferromagnetic phase. A strong anisotropy of the magnetoelastic properties was found, in good agreement with the type and propagation vector of the magnetic structure. We demonstrate that our capacitive dilatometry can detect lattice expansion effects and changes of the dielectric permittivity simultaneously because the sample is housed inside the capacitor. A separation of both effects is possible by shielding the sample. Dielectric transitions could be detected by this method and compared to the critical values of H and T in the magnetic phase diagram. Dielectric changes measured at 1 kHz excitation frequency are detected in GdMnO3 at about 180 K, and between 10 K and 25 K in the canted antiferromagnetic structure which is characterized by a complex magnetic order on both the Gd- and Mn-sites.
