We present global multidimensional numerical simulations of the plasma that pervades the dark matter haloes of clusters, groups and massive galaxies (the intracluster medium; ICM). Observations of clusters and groups imply that such haloes are roughly in global thermal equilibrium, with heating balancing cooling when averaged over sufficiently long time- and length-scales; the ICM is, however, very likely to be locally thermally unstable. Using simple observationally motivated heating prescriptions, we show that local thermal instability (TI) can produce a multiphase medium with similar to 104 K cold filaments condensing out of the hot ICM only when the ratio of the TI time-scale in the hot plasma (tTI) to the free-fall time-scale (tff) satisfies tTI/tff? 10. This criterion quantitatively explains why cold gas and star formation are preferentially observed in low-entropy clusters and groups. In addition, the interplay among heating, cooling and TI reduces the net cooling rate and the mass accretion rate at small radii by factors of similar to 100 relative to cooling-flow models. This dramatic reduction is in line with observations. The feedback efficiency required to prevent a cooling flow is similar to 10-3 for clusters and decreases for lower mass haloes; supernova heating may be energetically sufficient to balance cooling in galactic haloes. We further argue that the ICM self-adjusts so that tTI/tff? 10 at all radii. When this criterion is not satisfied, cold filaments condense out of the hot phase and reduce the density of the ICM. These cold filaments can power the black hole and/or stellar feedback required for global thermal balance, which drives tTI/tff? 10. In comparison to clusters, groups have central cores with lower densities and larger radii. This can account for the deviations from self-similarity in the X-ray luminositytemperature () relation. The high-velocity clouds observed in the Galactic halo can be due to local TI producing multiphase gas close to the virial radius if the density of the hot plasma in the Galactic halo is >rsim 10-5 cm-3 at large radii.

A hydrothermal reaction of cobalt nitrate, 4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid) (OBA), 1,2,4-triazole, and NaOH gave rise to a deep purple colored compound Co-4(triazolate)(2)(OBA)(3)], I, possessing Co-4 clusters. The Co-4 clusters are connected together through the tirazolate moieties forming a two-dimensional layer that closely resembles the TiS2 layer. The layers are pillared by the OBA units forming the three-dimensional structure. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of a pillared TiS2 layer in a metal-organic framework compound. Magnetic studies in the temperature range 1.8-300 K indicate strong antiferromagetic interactions for Co-4 clusters. The structure as well as the magnetic behavior of the present compound has been compared with the previously reported related compound Co-2(mu 3-OH)(mu(2)-H2O)(pyrazine)(OBA)(OBAH)] prepared using pyrazine as the linker between the Co-4 clusters.

Four new three-dimensional Mn2+ ion-containing compounds have been prepared by employing a hydrothermal reaction between Mn(CH3COO)(2)center dot 4H(2)O, sulfodibenzoic acid (H(2)SDBA), imidazole, alkali hydroxide and water at 220 degrees C for 1 day. The compounds have Mn-5 (1-4) clusters connected by SDBA, forming the three-dimensional structure. A time and temperature dependent study on the synthesis mixture revealed the formation of a one-dimensional compound, Mn(SDBA)(H2O)(2), at lower temperatures (T <= 180 degrees C). The stabilization of the fcu related topology in the compounds is noteworthy. Magnetic studies indicate strong anti-ferromagnetic interactions between the Mn2+ ions within the clusters in the temperature range 75-300 K. The rare participation of a sulfonyl group in the bonding is important and can pave way for the design of new structures.

This paper reports the fabrication and characterization of an ultrafast laser written Er-doped chalcogenide glass buried waveguide amplifier; Er-doped GeGaS glass has been synthesized by the vacuum sealed melt quenching technique. Waveguides have been fabricated inside the 4 mm long sample by direct ultrafast laser writing. The total passive fiber-to-fiber insertion loss is 2.58 +/- 0.02 dB at 1600 nm, including a propagation loss of 1.6 +/- 0.3 dB. Active characterization shows a relative gain of 2.524 +/- 0.002 dB/cm and 1.359 +/- 0.005 dB/cm at 1541 nm and 1550 nm respectively, for a pump power of 500 mW at a wavelength of 980 nm. Nano-indentation studies have been undertaken on bulk Ge15Te85-xSix glasses (0 <= x <= 9), to estimate hardness, H and elastic modulus, E. It is found that E and H increase initially with the increase in the atomic percent of Si. Further, a plateau is seen in the composition dependence of E and H in the composition range 2 <= x <= 6. It is also seen that the addition of up to 2 at% Si increases the density rho of the glass considerably; however, further additions of Si lead to a near linear reduction in rho, in the range 2 <= x <= 6. Beyond x=6, rho increases again with Si content. The variation of molar volume V-m brings out a more fascinating picture. A plateau is seen in the intermediate phase suggesting that the molecular structure of the glasses is adapting to keep the count of constraints fixed in this particular phase. The observed variations in mechanical properties are associated with the Boolchand's intermediate phase in the present glassy system, in the composition range 2 <= x <= 6, suggested earlier from calorimetric and electrical switching studies. The present results reveal rather directly the existence of the intermediate phase in elastic and plastic properties of chalcogenide glasses. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Three new copper-azido complexes Cu-4(N-3)(8)(L-1)(2)](n) (1), Cu-4(N-3)(6)(L-2)(2)(H2O)(2)] (2), and Cu-4(N-3)(6)(L-3)(2)](n) (3) L-1 is the imine resulting from the condensation of pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde with N-methylethylenediamine, HL2 and HL3 are the condensation products of 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde with N,N-diethylethylenediamine and N-ethylethylenediamine respectively] have been synthesized by using 0.5 molar equivalents of the Schiff base ligands with Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and an excess of NaN3. Single crystal X-ray structures show that the basic unit of these complexes contains very similar Cu-4(II) building blocks. While 1 and 3 have overall 1D structures, 2 forms discrete tetranuclear clusters due to blocking of two coordination sites on the tetranuclear cluster by water molecules. Magnetic susceptibility measurements over a wide range of temperatures exhibit the presence of both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic exchanges within the tetranuclear unit structures. Density functional theory calculations (using B3LYP functional and two different basis sets) have been performed on the complexes 1-3 to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation of their overall magnetic behavior.

In this paper we discuss a novel procedure for constructing clusters of bound particles in the case of a quantum integrable derivative delta-function Bose gas in one dimension. It is shown that clusters of bound particles can be constructed for this Bose gas for some special values of the coupling constant, by taking the quasi-momenta associated with the corresponding Bethe state to be equidistant points on a single circle in the complex momentum plane. We also establish a connection between these special values of the coupling constant and some fractions belonging to the Farey sequences in number theory. This connection leads to a classification of the clusters of bound particles associated with the derivative delta-function Bose gas and allows us to study various properties of these clusters like their size and their stability under the variation of the coupling constant. Quaternary chalcogenide compounds Cu2+ xZnSn1-xSe4 (0 <= x <= 0.15) were prepared by solid state synthesis. Rietveld powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) refinements combined with Electron Probe Micro Analyses (EPMA, WDS-Wavelength Dispersive Spectroscopy) and Raman spectra of all samples confirmed the stannite structure (Cu2FeSnS4-type) as the main phase. In addition to the main phase, small amounts of secondary phases like ZnSe, CuSe and SnSe were observed. Transport properties of all samples were measured as a function of temperature in the range from 300 K to 720 K. The electrical resistivity of all samples decreases with an increase in Cu content except for Cu2.1ZnSn0.9Se4, most likely due to a higher content of the ZnSe. All samples showed positive Seebeck coefficients indicating that holes are the majority charge carriers. The thermal conductivity of doped samples was high compared to Cu2ZnSnSe4 and this may be due to the larger electronic contribution and the presence of the ZnSe phase in the doped samples. The maximum zT = 0.3 at 720 K occurs for Cu2.05ZnSn0.95Se4 for which a high-pressure torsion treatment resulted in an enhancement of zT by 30% at 625 K. Copyright 2013 Author(s). We show that the third order optical nonlinearity of 15-atom gold clusters is significantly enhanced when in contact with indium tin oxide (ITO) conducting film. Open and close aperture z-scan experiments together with non-degenerate pump-probe differential transmission experiments were done using 80 fs laser pulses centered at 395 nm and 790 nm on gold clusters encased inside cyclodextrin cavities. We show that two photon absorption coefficient is enhanced by an order of magnitude as compared to that when the clusters are on pristine glass plate. The enhancement for the nonlinear optical refraction coefficient is similar to 3 times. The photo-induced excited state absorption using pump-probe experiments at pump wavelength of 395 nm and probe at 790 nm also show an enhancement by an order of magnitude. These results attributed to the excited state energy transfer in the coupled gold cluster-ITO system are different from the enhancement seen so far in charge donor-acceptor complexes and nanoparticle-conjugate polymer composites.

Optical straight waveguides are inscribed in GeGaS and GeGaSSb glasses using a high repetition-rate sub-picosecond laser. The mechanical properties of the glasses in the inscribed regions, which have undergone photo induced changes, have been evaluated by using the nanoindentation technique. Results show that the hardness and elastic modulus of the photo-modified glasses are significantly lower as compared to the other locations in the waveguide, which tend to be similar to those of the unexposed areas. The observed mechanical effects are found to correlate well with the optical properties of the waveguides. Further, based on the results, the minimum threshold values of hardness and elastic modulus for the particular propagation mode of the waveguide (single or multi), has been established.

In contemporary world optoelectronics materials are used in daily life owing to its verity of applications. Utility of these materials makes them attractive for investigations. Specifically study regarding optical properties of recent developed materials is worth for technical uses. Therefore, this work demonstrates a comparative study of extinction coefficient (K), real dielectric (epsilon') and imaginary dielectric (epsilon `') constants, refractive index (n) and optical energy band gap (E-g) with structural unit < r > for Se98-xZn2Inx (0 <= X-In <= 10) and Se93-yZn2Te5Iny (0 <= Y-In <= 10) chalcogenide glasses. Fixed amount of Te with increasing In concentration as cost of Se is largely influence the optical parameters of the materials. Values of optical parameters are obtained higher and lower respectively at thresholds structural units values. This comparative study demonstrates that enhanced values of optical parameters have been obtained for Te containing Se-Zn-In glasses.

In this work, we synthesized bulk amorphous GeGaS glass by conventional melt quenching technique. Amorphous nature of the glass is confirmed using X-ray diffraction. We fabricated the channel waveguides on this glass using the ultrafast laser inscription technique. The waveguides are written on this glass 100 mu m below the surface of the glass with a separation of 50 ae m by focusing the laser beam into the material using 0.67 NA lens. The laser parameters are set to 350 fs pulse duration at 100 KHz repetition rate. A range of writing energies with translation speeds 1 mm/s, 2 mm/s, 3 mm/s and 4 mm/s were investigated. After fabrication the waveguides facets were ground and polished to the optical quality to remove any tapering of the waveguide close to the edges. We characterized the loss measurement by butt coupling method and the mode field image of the waveguides has been captured to compare with the mode field image of fibers. Also we compared the asymmetry in the shape of the waveguide and its photo structural change using Raman spectra.

We report here, a finite difference thermal diffusion (FDTD) model for controlling the cross-section and the guiding nature of the buried channel waveguides fabricated on GeGaS bulk glasses using the direct laser writing technique. Optimization of the laser parameters for guiding at wavelength 1550 nm is done experimentally and compared with the theoretical values estimated by FDTD model. The mode field diameter (MFD) between 5.294 mu m and 24.706 mu m were attained by suitable selection of writing speed (1mm/s to 4 mm/s) and pulse energy (623 nJ to 806 nJ) of the laser at a fixed repletion rate of 100 kHz. Transition from single-mode to multi-mode waveguide is observed at pulse energy 806nJ as a consequence of heat accumulation. The thermal diffusion model fits well for single-mode waveguides with the exception of multi-mode waveguides.

Rapid advancements in multi-core processor architectures coupled with low-cost, low-latency, high-bandwidth interconnects have made clusters of multi-core machines a common computing resource. Unfortunately, writing good parallel programs that efficiently utilize all the resources in such a cluster is still a major challenge. Various programming languages have been proposed as a solution to this problem, but are yet to be adopted widely to run performance-critical code mainly due to the relatively immature software framework and the effort involved in re-writing existing code in the new language. In this paper, we motivate and describe our initial study in exploring CUDA as a programming language for a cluster of multi-cores. We develop CUDA-For-Clusters (CFC), a framework that transparently orchestrates execution of CUDA kernels on a cluster of multi-core machines. The well-structured nature of a CUDA kernel, the growing popularity, support and stability of the CUDA software stack collectively make CUDA a good candidate to be considered as a programming language for a cluster. CFC uses a mixture of source-to-source compiler transformations, a work distribution runtime and a light-weight software distributed shared memory to manage parallel executions. Initial results on running several standard CUDA benchmark programs achieve impressive speedups of up to 7.5X on a cluster with 8 nodes, thereby opening up an interesting direction of research for further investigation.
