An analysis of the primary degradation products of the widely used commercial polysulfide polymer Thiokol LP-33 by direct pyrolysis-mass spectrometry (DP-MS) is reported. The mechanism of degradation is through a radical process involving the random cleavage of a formal C-O bond followed by backbiting to form the cyclic products.

Plate-shaped products resulting from martensitic, diffusional, and mixed mode transformations in zirconium-base alloys are compared. in the present study. These alloys are particularly suitable for the comparison in view of the fact that the lattice correspondence between the parent beta (bcc) and the product alpha (hcp) or gamma-hydride (fct) phases are remarkably similar for different types of transformations. Crystallographic features such as orientation relations, habit planes, and interface structures associated with these transformations have been compared:, with a view toward examining whether the transformation mechanisms have characteristic imprints on these experimental observables. Martensites exhibiting dislocated lath, internally twinned plate, and self-accommodating three-plate cluster morphologies have been encountered in Zr-2.5Nb alloy. Habit planes corresponding to all these morphologies have been found to be consistent with the predictions based on the invariant plane strain (IFS) criterion. Different morphologies have been found to reflect the manner in which the neighboring martensite variants are assembled. Lattice-invariant shears (LISs) for all these cases have been identified to be either {10 (1) over bar 1}(alpha) ((1) over bar 123)(alpha) slip or twinning on (10 (1) over bar 1)(alpha) planes. Widmanstatten alpha precipitates, forming in a step-quenching treatment, have been shown to have a lath morphology, the alpha/beta interface being decorated with a periodic array of (c + a) dislocations at a spacing of 8 to 10 nm. The line vectors of these dislocations are nearly parallel to the invariant lines. The alpha precipitates, forming in the retained beta phase on aging, exhibit an internally twinned structure with a zigzag habit plane. Average habit planes for the morphologies have been found to lie near the {103}(beta) - {113}(beta) poles, which are close to the specific variant of the {112}(beta) plane, which transforms into a prismatic plane of the type {1 (1) over bar 00}(alpha). The crystallography of the formation of the gamma-hydride phase (fct) from both the alpha and beta phases is seen to match the IFS predictions. While the beta-gamma transformation can be treated approximately as a simple shear on the basal plane involving a change in the stacking sequence, the alpha-gamma transformation call be conceptually broken into a alpha --> beta transformation following the Burgers correspondence and the simple beta-gamma shear process. The active eutectoid decomposition in the Zr-Cu system, beta --> alpha + beta', has been described in terms of cooperative growth of the alpha phase from the beta phase through the Burgers correspondence and of the partially ordered beta' (structurally similar to the equilibrium Zr2Cu phase) through an ordering process. Similarities and differences in crystallographic features of these transformations have been discussed. and the importance of the invariant line vector in deciding the geometry of the corresponding habit planes has been pointed out.

Experiments were conducted to measure the ac breakdown strength of 0.5 mm, thick epoxy alumina nanocomposites with different filler concentrations of 0.1, 1 and 5wt%. The experiments were performed as per the ASTM D 149 standard. It was observed that the ac breakdown strength was marginally lower up to 1wt% filler concentration and then increased at 5wt% filler concentration as compared to the unfilled epoxy. The Weibull shape parameter (β) increased with the addition of nanoparticles to epoxy. The dependence of thickness on the ac breakdown strength was also analyzed by conducting experiments on 1mm and 3mm thick unfilled epoxy and epoxy alumina nanocomposites of 1wt% and 5wt% filler concentrations. The DSC analysis was done to understand the material properties at the filler resin interface in order to study the effect of the filler concentration and thereby the influence of the interface on the ac breakdown strength of epoxy nanocomposites.

Synthesis of nanoparticles of Ni-Zn ferrite dispersed in aniline formaldehyde copolymer using a room temperature route and the effect of heat treatment on these samples were studied using XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy and TEM microscopy. The results show the formation of nanosized particles of Ni-Zn ferrite in the polymer matrix at room temperature. On pyrolysis, the Ni-Zn ferrite phase persists up to 500 degreesC. However, heating of composites to 700 degreesC results in the partial reduction of the spinet ferrite leading to the formation of Ni-Fe alloy under ambient conditions and complete reduction of the alloy on heating in inert atmosphere. Experiments were conducted to measure the ac breakdown strength of epoxy alumina nanocomposites with different filler loadings of 0.1, 1 and 5 wt%. The experiments were performed as per the ASTM D 149 standard on samples of thickness 0.5 mm, 1 mm and 3 mm in order to study the effect of thickness on the ac breakdown strength of epoxy nanocomposites. In the case of epoxy alumina nanocomposites it was observed that the ac breakdown strength was marginally lower for 0.1 wt% and 1 wt% filler loadings and then increased at 5 wt% filler loading as compared to the unfilled epoxy. The Weibull shape parameter (beta) increased with the addition of nanoparticles to epoxy as well as with the increasing sample thickness for all the filler loadings considered. DSC analysis was done to study the material properties at the filler resin interface in order to understand the effect of the filler loading and thereby the influence of the interface on the ac breakdown strength of epoxy nanocomposites. It was also observed that the decrease in ac electric breakdown strength with an increase in sample thickness follows an inverse power-law dependence. In addition, the ac breakdown strength of epoxy silica nanocomposites have also been studied in order to understand the influence of the filler type on the breakdown strength.

Electrical transport measurements on ultrathin single-crystalline Au nanowires, synthesized via a wet chemical route, show an unexpected insulating behavior. The linear response electrical resistance exhibits a power-law dependence on temperature. In addition, the variation of current over a wide range of temperature and voltage obeys a universal scaling relation that provides compelling evidence for a non-Fermi liquid behavior. Our results demonstrate that the quantum ground state In ultrathin nanowires of simple metallic systems can be radically different from their bulk counterparts and can be described In terms of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), in the presence of remarkably strong electron-electron interactions.

Substantial increase in competition compels design firms to develop new products at an increasingly rapid pace. This situation pressurizes engineering teams to develop better products and at the same time develop products faster [1]. Continuous innovation is a key factor to enable a company to generate profit on a continued basis, through the introduction of new products in the market – a prime intention for Product Lifecycle Management. Creativity, affecting a wide spectrum of business portfolios, is regarded as the crucial factor for designing products. A central goal of product development is to create products that are sufficiently novel and useful. This research focuses on the determination of novelty of engineering products. Determination of novelty is important for ascertaining the newness of a product, to decide on the patentability of the design, to compare designers' capability of solving problems and to ascertain the potential market of a product. Few attempts at measuring novelty is available in literature [2, 3, 4], but more in-depth research is required for assessing degree of novelty of products. This research aims to determine the novelty of a product by enabling a person to determine the degree of novelty in a product. A measure of novelty has been developed by which the degree of ''novelty'' of products can be ascertained. An empirical study has been conducted to determine the validity of this method for determining the 'novelty' of the products.

Sparking potentials have been measured in nitrogen and dry air between coaxial cylindrical electrodes for values of n = R2/R1 = approximately 1 to 30 (R1 = inner electrode radius, R2 = outer electrode radius) in the presence of crossed uniform magnetic fields. The magnetic flux density was varied from 0 to 3000 Gauss. It has been shown that the minimum sparking potentials in the presence of the crossed magnetic field can be evaluated on the basis of the equivalent pressure concept when the secondary ionization coefficient does not vary appreciably with B/p (B = magnetic flux density, p = gas pressure). The values of secondary ionization coefficients ¿B in nitrogen in crossed fields calculated from measured values of sparking potentials and Townsend ionization coefficients taken from the literature, have been reported. The calculated values of collision frequencies in nitrogen from minimum sparking potentials in crossed fields are found to increase with increasing B/p at constant E/pe (pe = equivalent pressure). Studies on the similarity relationship in crossed fields has shown that the similarity theorem is obeyed in dry air for both polarities of the central electrode in crossed fields.
