In this study tensile properties of consolidated magnesium chips obtained from solid state re-cycling (SSR) has been examined and correlated with the microstructure. Chips machined from as-cast billet of pure magnesium were consolidated through SSR technique, comprising of compaction at ambient conditions followed by hot extrusion at four different temperatures viz., 250, 300, 350 and 400 degrees C. The extruded rods were characterized for microstructure and their room temperature tensile properties. Both ultimate tensile strength and 0.2% proof stress of these consolidated materials are higher by 15-35% compared to reference material (as cast and extruded). Further these materials obey Hall-Petch relation with respect to strength dependence of grain size. Strain hardening behavior, measured in terms of hardening exponent, hardening capacity and hardening rate was found to be distinctly different in chip consolidated material compared to reference material. Strength asymmetry, measured as a ratio of compressive proof stress to tensile proof stress was higher in chip consolidated material. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The deformation behaviour of macrocrystalline and nanocrystalline nickel shows a striking similarity in terms of higher intragranular misorientation and a texture with dominant Brass component on rolling. This is in contrast to microcrystalline nickel, with lower intragranular misorientation and typical Copper type texture. This has been attributed to the free surfaces in macrocrystalline sample and grain boundaries in nanocrystalline sample. Experimental evidence of `Grain Boundary Affected Zone' (GBAZ) showing multi-slip in contrast to limited slip in the grain interiors has been provided. The similarity in evolution of texture and intragranular misorientation is explained on the basis of reduced contribution from the GBAZ at the two extreme length scales.

Friction stir processing was carried out on the Al-Mg-Mn alloy to achieve ultrafine grained microstructure. The evolution of microstructure and micro-texture was studied in different regions of the deformed sample, namely nugget zone, thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and base metal. The average grain sizes of the nugget zone, TMAZ and base metal are 1.5 mu m +/- 0.5 mu m, 15 mu m +/- 8 mu m, and 80 mu m +/- 10 mu m, respectively. The TMAZ exhibits excessive deformation banding structure and sub-grain formation. The orientation gradient within the sub-grain is dependent on grain size, orientation, and distance from nugget zone. The microstructure was partitioned based on the grain orientation spread and grain size values to separate the recrystallized fraction from the deformed region in order to understand the micromechanism of grain refinement. The texture of both deformed and recrystallized regions are similar in nature. Microstructure and texture analysis suggest that the restoration processes are different in different regions of the processed sample. The transition region between nugget zone and TMAZ exhibits large elongated grains surrounded by fine equiaxed grains of different orientation which indicate the process of discontinuous dynamic recrystallization. Within the nugget zone, similar texture between deformed and recrystallized grain fraction suggests that the restoration mechanism is a continuous process.

Grain boundary dynamics and grain growth play a pivotal role in the fabrication of functional polycrystalline materials. However, not much is known about the delicate interplay between various microscopic processes that drive grain boundary motion which eventually culminates in the desired grain morphology. Colloidal systems are ideally suited to bridge the gap between the microscopic and macroscopic processes underlying grain growth, since their dynamics can be followed in real space and real time with single-particle resolution. The present review aims at highlighting contributions from colloid experiments that have led to a holistic understanding of grain growth in polycrystalline materials.

The change in the growth rate of the Nb3Sn product phase because of Ti addition is studied for solid Nb(Ti)-liquid Sn interactions. The growth rate increased from no Ti to 1 at.% and 2 at.% of Ti in Nb, and the activation energy decreased from 221 kJ/mol to 146 kJ/mol. Based on the estimated values, the role of grain boundary and lattice diffusion is discussed in light of the possibility of increased grain boundary area and point defects such as antisites and vacancies.

A phase field modelling approach is implemented in the present study towards simulation of microstructure evolution during cooling slope semi solid slurry generation process of A380 Aluminium alloy. First, experiments are performed to evaluate the number of seeds required within the simulation domain to simulate near spherical microstructure formation, occurs during cooling slope processing of the melt. Subsequently, microstructure evolution is studied employing a phase field method. Simulations are performed to understand the effect of cooling rate on the slurry microstructure. Encouraging results are obtained from the simulation studies which are validated by experimental observations. The results obtained from mesoscopic phase field simulations are grain size, grain density, degree of sphericity of the evolving primary Al phase and the amount of solid fraction present within the slurry at different time frames. Effect of grain refinement also has been studied with an aim of improving the slurry microstructure further. Insight into the process has been obtained from the numerical findings, which are found to be useful for process control.

A method to estimate the Hall-Petch coefficient k for yield strength and flow stress of steels through nanoindentation experiments is proposed. While determination of k(f) for flow stress is on the basis of grain boundary strengthening evaluated by sharp indentation, k(y) for yield strength was computed with pop-in data from spherical indentations. Good agreement between estimated and literature data, obtained from the tensile tests, validates the proposed methodology. (C) 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Cobalt copper ferrite nanopowders with composition Co1-xCu5Fe2O4 (0.0 <= x <= 0.5) was synthesized by solution combustion method. The powder X-ray diffraction studies reveal the formation of single ferrite phase with particle size of similar to 11-35 nm. Due to increase in electron density with in a material, X-ray density increase with increase of Cu2+ ions concentration. As Cu2+ ions concentration increases, saturation magnetization decreases from 38.5 to 26.7 emu g(-1). Further, the squareness ratio was found to be similar to 0.31-0.46 which was well below the typical value 1, which indicates the existence of single domain isolated ferrimagnetic samples. The dielectric and electrical modulus was studied over a frequency range of 1 Hz to 1 MHz at room temperature using the complex impedance spectroscopy technique. Impedance plots showed only one semi-circle which corresponds to the contributions of grain boundaries. The lower values of dielectric loss at higher frequency region may be quite useful for high frequency applications such as microwave devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Lead-tin-telluride is a well-known thermoelectric material in the temperature range 350-750 K. Here, this alloy doped with manganese (Pb0.96-yMn0.04SnyTe) was prepared for different amounts of tin. X-ray diffraction showed a decrease of the lattice constant with increasing tin content, which indicated solid solution formation. Microstructural analysis showed a wide distribution of grain sizes from <1 mu m to 10 mm and the presence of a SnTe rich phase. All the transport properties were measured in the range of 300-720 K. The Seebeck coefficient showed that all the samples were p-type indicating holes as dominant carriers in the measurement range. The magnitude increased systematically on reduction of the Sn content due to possible decreasing hole concentration. Electrical conductivity showed the degenerate nature of the samples. Large values of the electrical conductivity could have possibly resulted from a large hole concentration due to a high Sn content and secondly, due to increased mobility by sp-d orbital interaction between the Pb1-ySnyTe sublattice and the Mn2+ ions. High thermal conductivity was observed due to higher electronic contribution, which decreased systematically with decreasing Sn content. The highest zT = 0.82 at 720 K was obtained for the alloy with the lowest Sn content (y = 0.56) due to the optimum doping level.

Friction stir processing (FSP) is emerging as one of the most competent severe plastic deformation (SPD) method for producing bulk ultra-fine grained materials with improved properties. Optimizing the process parameters for a defect free process is one of the challenging aspects of FSP to mark its commercial use. For the commercial aluminium alloy 2024-T3 plate of 6 mm thickness, a bottom-up approach has been attempted to optimize major independent parameters of the process such as plunge depth, tool rotation speed and traverse speed. Tensile properties of the optimum friction stir processed sample were correlated with the microstructural characterization done using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD). Optimum parameters from the bottom-up approach have led to a defect free FSP having a maximum strength of 93% the base material strength. Micro tensile testing of the samples taken from the center of processed zone has shown an increased strength of 1.3 times the base material. Measured maximum longitudinal residual stress on the processed surface was only 30 MPa which was attributed to the solid state nature of FSP. Microstructural observation reveals significant grain refinement with less variation in the grain size across the thickness and a large amount of grain boundary precipitation compared to the base metal. The proposed experimental bottom-up approach can be applied as an effective method for optimizing parameters during FSP of aluminium alloys, which is otherwise difficult through analytical methods due to the complex interactions between work-piece, tool and process parameters. Precipitation mechanisms during FSP were responsible for the fine grained microstructure in the nugget zone that provided better mechanical properties than the base metal. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. We carry out an extensive numerical study of the dynamics of spiral waves of electrical activation, in the presence of periodic deformation (PD) in two-dimensional simulation domains, in the biophysically realistic mathematical models of human ventricular tissue due to (a) ten-Tusscher and Panfilov (the TP06 model) and (b) ten-Tusscher, Noble, Noble, and Panfilov (the TNNPO4 model). We first consider simulations in cable-type domains, in which we calculate the conduction velocity theta and the wavelength lambda of a plane wave; we show that PD leads to a periodic, spatial modulation of theta and a temporally periodic modulation of lambda; both these modulations depend on the amplitude and frequency of the PD. We then examine three types of initial conditions for both TP06 and TNNPO4 models and show that the imposition of PD leads to a rich variety of spatiotemporal patterns in the transmembrane potential including states with a single rotating spiral (RS) wave, a spiral-turbulence (ST) state with a single meandering spiral, an ST state with multiple broken spirals, and a state SA in which all spirals are absorbed at the boundaries of our simulation domain. We find, for both TP06 and TNNPO4 models, that spiral-wave dynamics depends sensitively on the amplitude and frequency of PD and the initial condition. We examine how these different types of spiral-wave states can be eliminated in the presence of PD by the application of low-amplitude pulses by square- and rectangular-mesh suppression techniques. We suggest specific experiments that can test the results of our simulations.

The effects of combined additions of Ca and Sb on the microstructure and tensile properties of AZ91D alloy fabricated by squeeze-casting have been investigated. For comparison, the same has also been studied with and without individual additions of Ca and Sb. The results indicate that both individual and combined additions refine the grain size and beta-Mg17Al12 phase, which is more pronounced with combined additions. Besides alpha-Mg and beta-Mg17Al12 phases, a new reticular Al2Ca and rod-shaped Mg3Sb2 phases are formed following individual additions of Ca and Sb in the AZ91D alloy. With combined additions, an additional Ca2Sb phase is formed suppressing Mg3Sb2 phase. Additions of both Ca and Sb increase yield strength (YS) at both ambient and elevated temperatures up to 200 degrees C. However, both ductility and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) decrease first up to 150 degrees C and then increase at 200 degrees C. The increase in YS is attributed to the refinement of grain size, whereas, ductility and UTS are deteriorated by the presence of brittle Al2Ca, Mg3Sb2 and Ca2Sb phases. The best tensile properties are obtained in the AZXY9110 alloy owing to the presence of lesser amount of brittle Al2Ca and Ca2Sb phases resulted from the optimum content of 1.0Ca and 0.3Sb (wt%). The fracture surface of the tensile specimen tested at ambient temperature reveals cleavage failure that changes to quasi-cleavage at 200 degrees C. The squeeze-cast alloys exhibited better tensile properties as compared to that of the gravity-cast alloys nullifying the detrimental effects of Ca and/or Sb additions. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Many boundary value problems occur in a natural way while studying fluid flow problems in a channel. The solutions of two such boundary value problems are obtained and analysed in the context of flow problems involving three layers of fluids of different constant densities in a channel, associated with an impermeable bottom that has a small undulation. The top surface of the channel is either bounded by a rigid lid or free to the atmosphere. The fluid in each layer is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible, and the flow is irrotational and two-dimensional. Only waves that are stationary with respect to the bottom profile are considered in this paper. The effect of surface tension is neglected. In the process of obtaining solutions for both the problems, regular perturbation analysis along with a Fourier transform technique is employed to derive the first-order corrections of some important physical quantities. Two types of bottom topography, such as concave and convex, are considered to derive the profiles of the interfaces. We observe that the profiles are oscillatory in nature, representing waves of variable amplitude with distinct wave numbers propagating downstream and with no wave upstream. The observations are presented in tabular and graphical forms.

The mechanism of grain refinement in a AZ31 Mg alloy subjected to hot groove rolling is investigated up to large strain (epsilon(t) similar to 2.5). The alloy shows enhanced yield strength without compromising ductility. The change in strain path during rolling has resulted in significant weakening of basal texture. The microstructure analyses show that dynamic recrystallization (DRX) contributed significantly to grain refinement and hence to the observed mechanical properties. The combined effects of DRX and texture evolution on mechanical properties have been addressed.

This is the first successful attempt to produce Mg-Ce alloys of different texture through different processing routes while keeping the grain size and grain size distribution same. Tensile data shows that contribution of texture to ductility enhancement is primary and that of grain refinement is secondary. The texture resulting from multi-axial forging of extruded billets followed by annealing exhibits the highest ductility (similar to 40%) at room temperature. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
