Curing reactions of the viscous PS prepolymer and PS/AP propellant slurry have been studied. The molecular weight of the binder (separated from the propellant) and the prepolymer was found to increase to a maximum value, remain constant for some time, and then fall off between 50–125°C. The molecular weight of the binder was found to be less than corresponding prepolymer between 100–150°C but at lower temperatures (50–75°C) the reverse was found to be true. The increase in the molecular weight during curing at lower temperatures has been explained on the basis of Trommsdorff effect which gets support from the estimated activation energy (9 kcal mole−1) for the curing process. Curing was recognized as chain extension where the rate of polymerization becomes diffusion controlled below 75° C.

In situ polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene with sol-gel-derived mesoporous carbon (MC) leading to a new composite and its subsequent impregnation with Pt nanoparticles for application in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) is reported. The composite exhibits good dispersion and utilization of platinum nanoparticles akin to other commonly used microporous carbon materials, such as carbon black. Pt-supported MC-poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) composite also exhibits promising electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction, which is central to PEFCs. The PEFC with Pt-loaded MC-PEDOT support exhibits 75% of enhancement in its power density in relation to the PEFC with Pt-loaded pristine MC support while operating under identical conditions. It is conjectured that Pt-supported MC-PEDOT composite ameliorates PEFC performance/durability on repetitive potential cycling. (C) 2010 The Electrochemical Society. A molecule having a ketone group between two thiophene groups was synthesized. Presence of alternating electron donating and accepting moieties gives this material a donor-acceptor-donor (DAD) architecture. PolyDAD was synthesized from DAD monomer by oxidative polymerization. Device quality films of polyDAD were fabricated using pulsed laser deposition technique. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) data of both as synthesized and film indicate the material does not degrade during ablation. Optical band gap was determined to be about 1.45 eV. Four orders of magnitude increase in conductivity was observed from as synthesized to pulsed laser deposition (PLD) fabricated film of polyDAD. Annealing of polyDAD films increase conductivity, indicating better ordering of the molecules upon heating. Rectifying devices were fabricated from polyDAD, and preliminary results are discussed.

Polyaniline/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposites were synthesized by a simple and inexpensive one-step in situ polymerization method in the presence of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles. The structural, morphological, and electrical properties of the samples were characterized by wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). WAXD and SEM revealed the formation of polyaniline/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposites. Infrared spectroscopy indicated that there was some interaction between the ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles and polyaniline. The dc electrical conductivity measurements were carried in the temperature range of 80 to 300 K. With increase in the doping concentration of ZnFe2O4, the conductivity of the nanocomposites found to be decreasing from 5.15 to 0.92 Scm(-1) and the temperature dependent resistivity follows ln rho(T) similar to T-1/2 behavior. The nanocomposites (80 wt % of ZnFe2O4) show a more negative magnetoresistance compared with that of pure polyaniline (PANI). These results suggest that the interaction between the polymer matrix PANI and zinc nanoparticles take place in these nanocomposites. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Radical catalyzed thiol-ene reaction has become a useful alternative to the Huisgen-type click reaction as it helps to expand the variability in reaction conditions as well as the range of clickable entities. Thus, direct generation of hyper-branched polymers bearing peripheral allyl groups that could be clicked using a variety of functional thiols would be of immense value. A specifically designed AB(2) type monomer, that carries two allyl benzyl ethers groups and one alcohol functionality, was shown to undergo self-condensation under acid-catalyzed melt-transetherification to yield a hyperbranched polyether that carries numerous allyl end-groups. Importantly, it was shown that the kinetics of polymerization is not dramatically affected by the change of the ether unit from previously studied methyl benzyl ether to an allyl benzyl ether. The peripheral allyl groups were readily clicked quantitatively, using a variety of thiols, to generate an hydrocarbon-soluble octadecyl-derivative, amphiphilic systems using 2-mercaptoethanol and chiral amino acid (N-benzoyl cystine) derivatized hyperbranched structures; thus demonstrating the versatility of this novel class of clickable hyperscaffolds. The temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) of thiophene over a series of Co-Mo/gamma-Al2O3, hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts with varying Co to Mo ratios have been studied with the objective of understanding the promotional role of Co in the HDS reaction. As part of the study, the desorptions (TPD) and hydrogenations (TPSR) of butane, butene, and butadiene over these catalysts have also been investigated. The TPD of the hydrocarbons over catalysts containing no Co showed a single desorption profile while incorporation of Co created an additional site, with higher heats of desorption, without significantly affecting desorption from the original site. The TPSR measurements showed that the two sites had separate and independent activity for the hydrogenation of the C-4 hydrocarbons. The TPD of thiophene over catalysts with varying Co to Mo ratios showed a single desorption profile with identical heats of desorption, implying that Co does not affect or influence the adsorption sites for thiophene. The TPSR of the HDS of thiophene, however, showed that, although the products of the HDS reaction-butane, butene, and H2S-are the same irrespective of the Co content, the temperature profiles and the activation barriers for the formation of these species show considerable change with the Co/Co+Mo ratio. The results are discussed in light of the existing models for the promotional role of Co in the HDS reaction.

The temperature programmed-desorption (TPD) of butane, butene, butadiene and thiophene over a series of Co-MO/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts with varying Co to Mo ratio has been investigated. The TPD of butane, butene and butadiene over catalysts containing no Co showed a single desorption profile while incorporation of Co created an additional site without significantly affecting desorption from the original site. The TPD of thiophene over a series of catalysts with varying Co content showed identical desorption temperature as well as heat of desorption. It was concluded that thiophene was adsorbed on the ''Mo-S'' component of the catalyst and was unaffected by the presence of Co.

A novel (main chain)-(side chain) vinyl polyperoxide, poly(alpha-(tert-butylperoxymethyl)styrene peroxide) (MCSCPP), an alternating copolymer of alpha-(tert-butylperoxymethyl)styrene (TPMS) and oxygen, has been synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of TPMS. The MCSCPP was characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, IR, DSC, EI-MS, and GC-MS studies. The overall activation energy (E(a)) for the degradation of MCSCPP was found to be 27 kcal/mol. Formaldehyde and alpha-(tert-butylperoxy)acetophenone (TPAP) were identified as the primary degradation products of MCSCPP; TPAP was found to undergo further degradation. The side chain peroxy groups were found to be thermally more stable than those in the main chain. Polymerization of styrene in the presence of MCSCPP as initiator, at 80 degrees C, follows classical kinetics. The presence of peroxy segments in the polystyrene chain was confirmed by both H-1 NMR and thermal decomposition studies. Interestingly, unlike other vinyl polyperoxides, the MCSCPP initiator shows an increase in molecular weight with conversion.

Hyperbranched polyurethanes, with varying oligoethyleneoxy spacer segments between the branching points, have been synthesized by a one-pot approach starting from the appropriately designed carbonyl azide that incorporates the different spacer segments. The structures of monomers and polymers were confirmed by IR and H-1-NMR spectroscopy. The solution viscosity of the polymers suggested that they were of reasonably high molecular weight. Reversal of terminal functional groups was achieved by preparing the appropriate monohydroxy dicarbonyl azide monomer. The large number of terminal isocyanate groups at the chain ends of such hyperbranched macromolecules caused them to crosslink prior to its isolation. However, carrying out the polymerization in the presence of 1 equiv of a capping agent, such as an alcohol, resulted in soluble polymers with carbamate chain ends. Using a biphenyl-containing alcohol as a capping agent, we have also prepared novel hyperbranched perbranched polyurethanes with pendant mesogenic segments. These mesogen-containing polyurethanes, however, did not exhibit liquid crystallinity probably due to the wholly aromatic rigid polymer backbone. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

This article describes the first comprehensive study on the use of a vinyl polyperoxide, namely poly(styrene peroxide) (PSP), an equimolar alternating copolymer of oxygen and styrene, as a photoinitiator for free radical polymerization of vinyl monomers like styrene. The molecular weight, yield, structure and thermal stability of polystyrene (PS) thus obtained are compared with PS made using a simple peroxide like di-t-butyl peroxide. Interestingly, the PS prepared using PSP contained PSP segments attached to its backbone preferably at the chain ends. This PSP-PS-PSP was further used as a thermal macroinitiator for the preparation of another block copolymer PS-b-PMMA by reacting PSP-PS-PSP with methyl methacrylate (MMA). The mechanism of block copolymerization has been discussed. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Poly(vinyl acetate peroxide) (PVACP) was prepared from vinyl acetate by free-radical-initiated oxidative polymerization. The polyperoxide was isolated and characterized by different spectroscopic methods. The extreme instability of PVACP was demonstrated by FTIR spectroscopy. The H-1- and C-13-NMR studies show the irregularities in the polyperoxide chain due to the cleavage reactions of the propagating peroxide radical. Thermal degradation studies using differential scanning calorimetry revealed that PVACP degrades at a lower temperature and the heat of degradation is in the same range as reported for other vinyl polyperoxides. A series of new photo-crosslinkable main-chain liquid-crystalline polymers containing bis(benzylidene)cycloalkanone units have been studied. These units in the polymers function as mesogens as well as photoactive centres. Polyesters with three different bis(4-hydroxybenzylidene)cycloalkanones corresponding to three cycloalkanones, namely cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone and cycloheptanone, have been prepared. Three dicarboxylic acids with ether linkages, which were derived from oligoethylene oxides, namely triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol and pentaethylene glycol, have been used as spacers in these polymers. Polymerization was carried out by both solution and interfacial polycondensation; the latter method gave high-molecular-weight polymers. Structural characterizations were done by ultra-violet, infra-red and H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Liquid-crystalline properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized-light optical microscopy. These polymers show a nematic mesophase. Liquid-crystalline transition temperatures were correlated with polymer structure. The decrease in transition temperature with increase in cycloalkanone ring size was explained in terms of the change in geometrical anisotropy of bis(benzylidene)cycloalkanone units. MNDO (modified neglect of differential overlap) calculations were performed on the model compounds, bis(4-acetyloxybenzylidene)cycloalkanone to elucidate the geometrical variation of the mesogenic units with cycloalkanone ring size. Studies of photolysis reveal the two kinds of photoreactions that proceed in these polymer systems, namely photoisomerization and photo-crosslinking. The former reaction disrupts the parallel stacking of the chromophores and is reflected as an increase in the ultra-violet spectral intensity. The favourability of these two reactions depends on the mobility of the polymer chains. When the photolysis was done below T-g, photo-crosslinking dominates over photoisomerization. Above T-g, photoisomerization is followed by photo-crosslinking. The photosensitivity of the polymers decreases with increase in size of the cycloalkanone ring.

A new series of multielement flame-retardant plasticizers containing polyethylene stibinite phosphate esters have been prepared by bulk polymerization from ethylene glycol with various antimony (III) aryloxydichlorides and arylphosphorodichloridates possessing various combinations of substituent [Cl,Br,NO2]. All the polymers are pink-coloured viscous fluids. They were characterized by inherent viscosity, density, IR, H-1, C-13 and P-31 NMR spectroscopy. The thermal behaviour of the polymers was compared by thermogravimetric analysis and correlated with their structures. The flammability studies were carried out by the limiting oxygen index test. The polymers containing P, Sb, N and Pr elements in their backbone show superior thermal-and flame-retardant characteristics than the other polymers. A comparative study was carried out with one of the synthesized polymers as a polymeric flame-retardant additive to plasticized PVC. The results showed improved LOI and mechanical properties to that of the conventional flame-retardant additive composition. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

A hybrid thermosetting maleimido epoxy compound 4-(N-maleimidophenyl) glycidylether (N-MPGE) containing Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions was prepared by curing N-MPGE and tetradentate Schiff base Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes. The curing polymerization reaction of N-MPGE with metal complexes as curing agents was studied. The cured samples were studied for thermal stability, chemical (acid/alkali/solvent) and water absorption resistance and homogeneity of the cured systems. The tetradentate Schiff base, 3-(Z)-2-piperazin-1-yl-ethylimino]-1,3-dihydro indol-2-one was synthesized by the condensation of Isatin (Indole-2, 3-dione) with 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEP). Its complexes with Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) have been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, conductivity, Uv-Visible, FT-IR, TGA and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The spectral data revealed that the ligand acts as a neutral tetradentate Schiff base and coordinating through the azomethine nitrogen, two piperazine nitrogen atoms and carbonyl oxygen.

Polyaniline (PANI) is one of the most extensively used conjugated polymers in the design of electrochemical sensors. In this study, we report electrochemical dye detection based on PANI for the adsorption of both anionic and cationic dyes from solution. The inherent property of PANI to adsorb dyes has been explored for the development of electrochemical detection of dye in solution. The PANI film was grown on electrode via electrochemical polymerization. The as grown PANI film could easily adsorb the dye in the electrolyte solution and form an insulating layer on the PANI coated electrode. As a result, the current intensity of the PANI film was significantly altered. Furthermore, PANI coated stainless steel (SS) electrodes show a change in the current intensity of Fe2+/Fe3+ redox peaks due to the addition of dye in electrolyte solution. PANI films coated on both Pt electrodes and non-expensive SS electrodes showed the concentration of dye adsorbed is directly proportional to the current intensity or potential shift and thus can be used for the quantitative detection of textile dyes at very low concentrations.
