p-Aminobenzoate ion intercalated alpha-hydroxides of nickel/cobalt were synthesized by precipitation using ammonia (pH = similar to 12). Aqueous colloidal suspension of alpha-hydroxide of nickel/cobalt was obtained on washing the precipitate as the pH was reduced to similar to 7. The development of partial positive charge on the amine end of the intercalated anion causes repulsion between the layers leading to exfoliation and colloidal suspension of monolayers in water. While theb layers could be restacked from the colloidal suspension in the presenceof other anions in the case of alpha-cobalt hydroxide, the exfoliation could not be reversed easily in the case of the nickel analog. Interferon-gamma (IFN gamma) is a central regulator of the immune response and signals via the Janus Activated Kinase (JAK)-Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (STAT) pathway. Phosphorylated STAT1 homodimers translocate to the nucleus, bind to Gamma Activating Sequence (GAS) and recruit additional factors to modulate gene expression. A bioinformatics analysis revealed that greater number of putative promoters of immune related genes and also those not directly involved in immunity contain GAS compared to response elements (RE) for Interferon Regulatory Factor (IRF)1, Nuclear factor kappa B (NF kappa B) and Activator Protein (AP)1. GAS is present in putative promoters of well known IFN gamma-induced genes, IRF1, GBP1, CXCL10, and other genes identified were TLR3, VCAM1, CASP4, etc. Analysis of three microarray studies revealed that the expression of asubset of only GAS containing immune genes were modulated by IFN gamma. As a significant correlation exists between GAS containing immune genes and IFN gamma-regulated gene expression, this strategy may identify novel IFN gamma-responsive immune genes. This analysis is integrated with the literature on the roles of IFN gamma in mediating a plethoraof functions: anti-microbial responses, antigen processing, inflammation, growth suppression, cell death, tumor immunity and autoimmunity. Overall, this review summarizes our present knowledge onIFN gamma mediated signaling and functions. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Relay selection for cooperative communications promises significant performance improvements, and is, therefore, attracting considerable attention. While several criteria have been proposed for selecting one or more relays, distributed mechanisms that perform the selection have received relatively less attention. In this paper, we develop a novel, yet simple, asymptotic analysis of a splitting-based multiple access selection algorithm to find the single best relay. The analysis leads to simpler and alternate expressions for the average number of slots required to find the best user. By introducing a new contention load' parameter, the analysis shows that the parameter settings used in the existing literature can be improved upon. New and simple bounds are also derived. Furthermore, we propose a new algorithm that addresses the general problem of selecting the best Q >= 1 relays, and analyze and optimize it. Even for a large number of relays, the scalable algorithm selects the best two relays within 4.406 slots and the best three within 6.491 slots, on average. We also propose a new and simple scheme for the practically relevant case of discrete metrics. Altogether, our results develop a unifying perspective about the general problem of distributed selection in cooperative systems and several other multi-node systems.

Instability in conventional haptic rendering destroys the perception of rigid objects in virtual environments. Inherent limitations in the conventional haptic loop restrict the maximum stiffness that can be rendered. In this paper we present a method to render virtual walls that are much stiffer than those achieved by conventional techniques. By removing the conventional digital haptic loop and replacing it with a part-continuous and part-discrete time hybrid haptic loop, we were able to render stiffer walls. The control loop is implemented as a combinational logic circuit on an field-programmable gate array. We compared the performance of the conventional haptic loop and our hybrid haptic loop on the same haptic device, and present mathematical analysis to show the limit of stability of our device. Our hybrid method removes the computer-intensive haptic loop from the CPU-this can free a significant amount of resources that can be used for other purposes such as graphical rendering and physics modeling. It is our hope that, in the future, similar designs will lead to a haptics processing unit (HPU).

In an effort to find a simple and common single-source precursor route for the group 13 metal nitride semiconductor nanostructures, the complexes formed by the trichlorides of Al, Ga and In with urea have been investigated. The complexes, characterized by X-ray crystallography and other techniques, yield the nitrides on thermal decomposition. Single crystalline nanowires of AlN, GaN and InN have been deposited on Si substrates covered with Au islands by using the complexes as precursors. The urea complexes yield single crystalline nanocrystals under solvothermal conditions. The successful synthesis of the nanowires and nanocrystals of these three important nitrides by a simple single-precursor route is noteworthy and the method may indeed be useful in practice.

The membrane channel-forming polypeptide, Leu(1)-zervamicin, Ac-Leu-Ile-Gln-Iva-Ile(5)-Thr-Aib-Leu-Aib-Hyp(10) -Gln-Aib-Hyp-Aib-Pro(15)-Phol (Aib: alpha-aminoisobutyric acid; Iva: isovaline; Hyp: 4-hydroxyproline; Phol: phenylalininol) has been analyzed by x-ray diffraction in a third crystal form. Although the bent helix is quite similar to the conformations found in crystals A and B, the amount of bending is more severe with a bending angle approximate to 47 degrees, The water channel formed by the convex polar faces of neighboring helices is larger at the mouth than in crystals A and B, and the water sites have become disordered. The channel is interrupted in the middle by a hydrogen bond between the OH of Hyp(10) and the NH2 of the Gln(11) of a neighboring molecule. The side chain of Gln(11) is wrapped around the helix backbone in an unusual fashion in order that it can augment the polar side of the helix. In the present crystal C there appears to be an additional conformation for the Gln(11) side chain (with approximate to 20% occupancy) that opens the channel for possible ion passage. Structure parameters for C85H140N18O22.xH(2)O.C2H5OH are space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 10.337 (2) Angstrom, b = 28.387 (7) Angstrom, c = 39.864 (11) Angstrom, Z = 4, agreement factor R = 12.99% for 3250 data observed > 3 sigma(F), resolution = 1.2 Angstrom. Two new alkali metal borophosphates, K-3[BP(3)o(9)(OH)(3)] and Rb-3[B2P3O11(OH)(2)], were synthesized by applying solvothermal techniques using ethanol as solvent. The crystal structures were solved by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction (K-3[BP3O9(OH)(3)], monoclinic, C2/c (No. 15), a = 2454.6(8) pm, b = 736.3(2) pm, c = 1406.2(4) pm, beta = 118.35(2)degrees, Z = 8; Rb-3[B2P3O11(OH)(2)], monoclinic, P2(1)/c (No. 14), a = 781.6(2) pm, b:= 667.3(2) pm, c = 2424.8(5) pm, beta = 92.88(1)degrees, Z = 4). Both crystal structures comprise borophosphate chain anions. While for the rubidium compound a loop-branched chain motif is found as common for most of the chain anions in alkali metal borophosphates, the crystal structure of the potassium phase comprises the first open-branched chain with the highest phosphate content found so far in this group of compounds. Both chain anions are Closely related to known anhydrous or hydrated phases, and the structural relations are discussed in terms of how the presence of OH groups and hydrogen bonds as well as number, charge, and size of charge balancing cations influence the 3D structural arrangement. The anionic entities are classified in terms of general principles of structural systematics for borophosphates.

The lipid A and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) binding and neutralizing activities of a synthetic, polycationic, amphiphilic peptide were studied. The branched peptide, designed as a functional analog of polymyxin B, has a six residue hydrophobic sequence, bearing at its N-terminus a penultimate lysine residue whose alpha- and epsilon-amino groups are coupled to two terminal lysine residues. In fluorescence spectroscopic studies designed to examine relative affinities of binding to the toxin, neutralization of surface charge and fluidization of the acyl domains, the peptide was active, closely resembling the effects of polymyxin B and its nonapeptide derivative; however, the synthetic peptide does not induce phase transitions in LPS aggregates as do polymyxin B and polymyxin B nonapeptide. The peptide was also comparable with polymyxin B in its ability to inhibit LPS-mediated IL-l and IL-6 release from human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The synthetic compound is devoid of antibacterial activities and did not induce conductance fluxes in LPS-containing asymmetric planar membranes. These results strengthen the premise that basicity and amphiphilicity are necessary and sufficient physical properties that ascribe endotoxin binding and neutralizing activities, and further suggest that antibacterial/membrane perturbant and LPS neutralizing activities are dissociable, which may be of value in designing LPS-sequestering agents of low toxicity.

The surface of a soft elastic film becomes unstable and forms a self-organized undulating pattern because of adhesive interactions when it comes in contact proximity with a rigid surface. For a single film, the pattern length scale lambda, which is governed by the minimization of the elastic stored energy, gives lambda similar to 3h, where h is the film thickness. Based on a linear stability analysis and simulations of adhesion and debonding, we consider the contact instability of an elastic bilayer, which provides greater flexibility in the morphological control of interfacial instability. Unlike the case of a single film, the morphology of the contact instability patterns, debonding distance, and debonding force in a bilayer can be controlled in a nonlinear way by varying the thicknesses and shear moduli of the films. Interestingly, the pattern wavelength in a bilayer can be greatly increased or decreased compared to a single film when the adhesive contact is formed by the stiffer or the softer of the two films, respectively. In particular, lambda as small as 0.5h can be obtained. This indicates a new strategy for pattern miniaturization in elastic contact lithography.

Polyaniline salts have been synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of phenoxy acetic acid and its two derivatives using emulsion method at room temperature and characterized by different techniques such as infrared, H-1 and C-13 NMR, UV-visible spectroscopy, SEM, wide angle X-ray diffractograms and conductivity measurements. These polyaniline salts have the desirable property of high solubility for processibility in solvents such as DNIF, DMSO and a mixture of CHCl3 and acetone and they exhibit fairly good conductivity of similar to 3.0 x 10(-3) S cm(-1). The variations in solubility, conductivity and morphology with the protonating strength of the dopants are examined.

Nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (HAp) exhibits better bioactivity and biocompatibility with enhanced mechanical properties compared to the microcrystalline counterpart. In the present work, nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite was synthesized by wet chemical method. Sintering was carried out with nanocrystalline alumina as additive, the content of alumina being varied from 10 to 30 wt% in the composite. For 20 and 30 wt % Al2O3, hydroxyapatite decomposed into tricalcium phosphate (TCP) above the sintering temperature of 1100 degrees C. The fracture toughness of nano HAp-nano Al2O3 composite is anisotropic in nature and reached a maximum value of 6.9 MPa m(1/2).

Extensive, and collocated measurements of the mass concentrations (M-B) of aerosol black carbon (BC) and (M-T) of composite aerosols were made over the Arabian Sea, tropical Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean during a trans-continental cruise experiment. Our investigations show that MB remains extremely low(<50 ng m(-3)) and remarkably steady (in space and time) in the Southern Ocean (20 degrees S to 56 degrees S). In contrast, large latitudinal gradients exist north of similar to 20 degrees S; M-B increasing exponentially to reach as high as 2000 ng m(-3) in the Arabian Sea (similar to 8 degrees N). Interestingly, the share of BC showed a distinctly different latitudinal variation, with a peak close to the equator and decreasing on either side. Large fluctuations were seen in M-T over Southern Ocean associated with enhanced production of sea-salt aerosols in response to sea-surface wind speed. These spatio-temporal changes in M-B and its mixing ratio have important implications to regional and global climate.

The stress concentration that occurs when load is diffused from a constant stress member into thin sheet is an important problem in the design of light weight structures. By using solutions in biharmonic polar-trigonometric series, the stress concentration can be effectively isolated so that highly accurate information necessary for design can be obtained. A method of analysis yielding high accuracy with limited effort is presented for rectangular panels with transverse edges free or supported by inextensional end ribs. Numerical data are given for panels with length twice the width.
