The preparation and thermal decomposition of lithium and magnesium perchlorate ammines have been investigated. The catalytic effect of these ammines on AP decomposition has been studied. The catalytic effect of lithium and magnesium salts on AP decomposition has been attributed to the formation of the metal perchlorate ammine intermediate. In the case of a magnesium salt: AP mixture, the melting of the magnesium perchlorate monoammine intermediate seems to play an important role in catalysing the decomposition.

The filtrate obtained by interacting a known amount of rice husk with deionised, Milli-Q water was assessed as a carbon source and nutrient medium for the growth of Desulfotomaculum nigrificans, a typical sulfate-reducing bacterium. The filtrate contained essential growth constituents such as magnesium, potassium, phosphorous apart from calcium, sodium, chloride and sulfate ions. Based on the 1H and 13C NMR characterization studies, the organic composition of the components dissolved from the rice husk, was found to be: (i) 66% lignocellulosic material, (ii) 24% xylose + arabinose and (iii) 10% galactose. The growth studies indicated a 15-fold increase in the bacterial cell number in about 20 days. Nearly 81% and 66% reduction in sulfate concentration could be achieved in about 28 days, from the solutions containing initial sulfate concentrations of 550 mg/l and 1200 mg/l respectively. In both the cases studied, the iron concentration could be reduced by over 85%.

X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of (CrO4)2- doped, X-irradiated single crystals of ferroelectric ammonium sulphate ((NH4)2SO4, TC = 223 K) at 300 and 208 K are reported. The paramagnetic centre responsible for the ESR spectrum is identified to be Cr5+. Superhyperfine interaction of the unpaired electron with two equivalent protons is observed. The spin-Hamiltonian parameters which are nearly axial at 300 K, with g < g indicating a dx2-y2 orbital ground state, acquired rhombic character below TC indicating a distortion of the sulphate tetrahedron. An increase in the value of the proton superhyperfine constant in the ferroelectric phase is indicative of stronger hydrogen bonding.

Formation of oxygen radicals during reduction of H2O2 or diperoxovanadate with vanadyl sulfate or ferrous sulfate was indicated by the 1:2:2:1 electron spin resonance (ESR) signals of the DMPO adduct typical of standard radical dotOH radical. Signals derived from diperoxovanadate remained unchanged in the presence of ethanol in contrast to those from H2O2. This gave the clue that they represent a different radical, possibly radical dotOV(O2)2+, formed on breaking a peroxo-bridge of diperoxovanadate complex. The above reaction mixtures evolved dioxygen or, when NADH was present, oxidized it rapidly which was accompanied by consumption of dioxygen. Operation of a cycle of peroxovanadates including this new radical is suggested to explain these redox activities both with vanadyl and ferrous sulfates. It can be triggered by ferrous ions released from cellular stores in the presence of catalytic amounts of peroxovanadates.

Raman spectrum of a single crystal of ammonium sulphamate has been recorded for the two different orientations using λ 2537 resonance radiation of the mercury as the exciter. Thirty-four Raman lines have been observed of which eight belong to the lattice oscillations. Weak hydrogen bonding of NH2 group in the crystal was predicted. The infra-red absorption spectrum of the substance was taken in the powder form in potassium bromide disc, using Carl Zeiss UR10 IR spectrometer. Thirty-five absorption maxima could be identified.

The crystal structure of copper ammonium oxalate dihydrate (space group P1̃) has been derived from a refinement of the two-dimensional (hk0) and (0kl) x-ray data using the atomic coordinateis of the isomorphous salt CuK 2(C2O4)2.2H2O as the starting point of the analysis. In contrast to the chromium complexes of oxalic acid the C-C bonds in both the two nonequivalent oxalate ions in the unit cell are single bonds (1.58 and 1.61 Å) consistent with the conclusion of Jeffrey and Parry that the carboxyl groups of the oxalate ion are separated by a pure a bond with little or no π conjugation across the molecule. Both the oxalate ions are slightly nonplanar. The copper ions occupy the special positions (0, 0, 0) and 0, 1/2, 0) and their coordination is of the distorted octahedral type with four nearest oxygen neighbors ( ≃ 2 Å) at the corners of a square and two more distant atoms along the octahedral bond direction. The environment of the NH4+ ions consists of eight nearest oxygen atoms at a mean distance of 3 Å.

Cells and metabolic products of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans were successfully used to separate quartz from hematite through environmentally benign microbially induced flotation. Bacterial metabolic products such as extracellular proteins and polysaccharides were isolated from both unadapted and mineral-adapted bacterial metabolite and their basic characteristics were studied in order to get insight into the changes brought about on bioreagents during adaptation. Interaction between bacterial cells and metabolites with minerals like hematite and quartz brought about significant surface-chemical changes on both the minerals. Quartz was rendered more hydrophobic, while hematite became more hydrophilic after biotreatment. The predominance of bacterial polysaccharides on interacted hematite and of proteins on quartz was responsible for the above surface-chemical changes, as attested through adsorption studies. Surface-chemical changes were also observed on bacterial cells after adaptation to the above minerals. Selective separation of quartz from hematite was achieved through interaction with quartz-adapted bacterial cells and metabolite. Mineral-specific proteins secreted by quartz-adapted cells were responsible for conferment of hydrophobicity on quartz resulting in enhanced separation from hematite through flotation. Raman spectra of single crystals of (NH4)2M(SO4)2·6 H2O where M=Mg, Zn Ni or Co have been recorded using λ 2537 excitation. Interesting results concerning the substitution of the divalent atoms in the double sulphate lattice on the sulphate and ammonium frequencies are observed. The spectra of these double sulphates are discussed in the light of the known crystal structure details and in relation, to the spectra of the corresponding potassium double sulphates, reported recently by the author. The Raman spectrum of NaNH4SO4·2 H2O has also been recorded for the first time and the results obtained are also included.

An organically templated iron(II) sulfate of the composition [H3N(CH2)2NH2(CH2)2(NH3]4[FeII 9F18(SO4)6]â9H2O with a distorted Kagome structure has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions in the presence of diethylenetriamine. The distortion of the hexagonal bronze structure comes from the presence of two different types of connectivity between the FeF4O2 octahedra and the sulfate tetrahedra. This compound exhibits magnetic properties different from those of an Fe(II) compound with a perfect Kagome structure and is a canted antiferromagnet at low temperatures.
Studies on the ageing behaviour of Polyvinylchloride/ammonium perchlorate composite solid propellant
Resumo:
The effects of ageing on the properties of a complete polyvinyl chloride — dibutyl phthalate — ammonium perchlorate solid propellant have been studied by measurements of burning rates, thermal decomposition rates (by thermogravimetry and DTA) and calorimetric values. Ageing leads to loss of HCl by dehydrochlorination and a corresponding increase in heat of combustion.

The electrochemical reduction of oxygen has been studied on gold, boron-doped diamond (BDD) and glassy carbon (GC) electrodes in a ternary eutectic mixture of acetamide (CH3CONH2), urea (NH2CONH2) and ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3). Cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), chronoamperometry and rotating disk electrode (RDE) voltammetry techniques have been employed to follow oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The mechanism for the electrochemical reduction of oxygen on polycrystalline gold involves 2-step. 2-electron pathways of O-2 to H2O2 and further reduction of H2O2 to H2O. The first 2-electron reduction of O-2 to H2O2 passes through superoxide intermediate by 1-electron reduction of oxygen. Kinetic results suggest that the initial 1-electron reduction of oxygen to HO2 is the rate-determining step of ORR on gold surfaces. The chronoamperometric and ROE studies show a potential dependent change in the number of electrons on gold electrode. The oxygen reduction reaction on boron-doped diamond (BOO) seems to proceed via a direct 4-electron process. The reduction of oxygen on the glassy carbon (GC) electrode is a single step, irreversible, diffusion limited 2-electron reduction process to peroxide. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ammonium and alkali metal tetrafluoroborates have been prepared by the cation exchange reaction of pyridinium tetrafluoroborate with the corresponding hydroxides/halides. The reaction of pyridinium tetrafluoroborate with primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl amines at room temperature gives rise to mono-, di- and tri-alkylammonium tetrafluoroborates, respectively. The yields are good and the samples are of high purity. The products have been characterised by elemental analysis, IR and PMR spectroscopy. The spectral data for most of the compounds are reported for the first time.
