The free-base, copper(II) and zinc(II) derivatives of 5,10,15,20-tetraarylporphyrin (aryl = phenyl, 4-methylphenyl or 4-chlorophenyl) and the corresponding brominated 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octabromo-5,10,15,20-tetraarylporphyrin derivatives have been synthesized and their spectral and redox properties compared by UV/VIS, H-1 NMR, ESR and cyclic voltammetric methods. Substitution with the electron-withdrawing bromine groups at the pyrrole carbons has a profound influence on the UV/VIS and H-1 NMR spectral features and also on the redox potentials of these systems. On the other hand, electron-withdrawing chloro or electron-donating methyl groups at the para positions of the four phenyl rings have only a marginal effect on the spectra and redox potentials of both the brominated and the non-brominated derivatives. The ESR data for the copper(II) derivatives of ail these systems reveal that substitution at either the beta-pyrrole carbons and/or the para positions of the meso-phenyl groups does not significantly affect the spin-Hamiltonian parameters that describe the metal centre in each case. Collectively, these observations suggest that the highest-occupied (HOMO) and lowest-unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) of the octabromoporphyrins involve the porphyrin pi-ring system as is the case with the non-brominated derivatives.-Investigations have been carried out to probe the electronic structures of these systems by three different approaches involving spectral and redox potential data as well as AMI calculations. The results obtained suggest that the electron-withdrawing beta-bromine substituents stabilize the LUMOs and, to a lesser degree, the HOMOs and that the extent of these changes can be fine-tuned, in a subtle way, by substituting at the meso-aryl rings of a given porphyrin.

Phase relations in the pseudoternary system CaO-CoO-SiO2 have been established at 1323 K. Three quaternary oxides were found to be stable: CaCoSi2O6 with clinopyroxene (Cpx), Ca2CoSi2O7 with melilite (Mel), and CaCoSiO4 with olivine (Ol) structures. The Gibbs energies of formation of the quaternary oxides from their component binary oxides were measured using solid-state galvanic cells incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte in the temperature range of 1000-1324 K. The results can be summarized as follows: CoO (rs) + CaO (rs) + 2SiO(2) (Qtz) --> CaCoSi2O6 (Cpx), Delta G(f)(0) = -117920 + 11.26T (+/-150) J/mol CoO (rs) + 2CaO (rs) + 2SiO(2) (Qtz) --> Ca2CoSi2O7 (Mel), Delta G(f)(0) = -192690 + 2.38T (+/-130) J/mol CoO (rs) + CaO (rs) + SiO2 (Qtz) --> CaCoSiO2 (Ol), Delta G(f)(0) = -100325 + 2.55T (+/-100) J/mol where rs = rock salt (NaCl) structure and Qtz = quartz. The uncertainty limits correspond to twice the standard error estimate. The experimentally observed miscibility gaps along the joins CaO-CoO and CaCoSiO4-Co2SiO4 were used to calculate the excess free energies of mixing for the solid solutions CaxCo1-xO and (CayCo1-y)CoSiO4:Delta G(E) = X(1 - X)[31975X + 26736 (1 - X)] J/mol and Delta G(E) = 23100 (+/-250) Y(1 - Y) J/mol. A T-X phase diagram for the binary CaO-CoO was computed from the thermodynamic information; the diagram agrees with information available in the literature. The computed miscibility gap along the CaCoSiO4-Co2SiO4 join is associated with a critical temperature of 1389 (+/-15) K. Stability fields for the various solid solutions and the quaternary compounds are depicted on chemical-potential diagrams for SiO2, CaO, and CoO at 1323 K.

Pentoxifylline (PF) is used to improve motility of spermatozoa from subfertile or nonfertile males to accomplish in vitro fertilization in humans. The possible adverse effect of PF on pre- and peri- implantation stage embryo development in a suitable rodent model, such as the golden hamster, is yet to be determined. In this study, hamster cauda epididymal spermatozoa were exposed to different concentrations (0.23 to 3.6 mM) of PF, and their quantitative [percentage of motility] and qualitative [Score 0 to 5] motility were assessed and values expressed as the sperm motility index. Upon addition of spermatozoa to dishes containing PF, an immediate increase in sperm motility and sperm motility index was evident, which increased up to 4 to 6 h and then declined. The sperm motility index increase by PF was dose-dependant, and greater than or equal to 1.8 mM PF was detrimental after 4 h. The optimum dose of PF was found to be 0.45 mM. To assess the fertilizing ability of PF-treated spermatozoa, in vitro fertilization was carried out. Fertilization rates for spermatozoa treated with 3.6 mM PF were lower (53.8 +/- 7.8) than for the controls (69.5 +/- 10.2), whereas, treatment with 0.45 mM PF increased the rates (91.6 +/- 4.3) compared with that of the controls (80.2 +/- 5.9). In conclusion, low concentrations (0.23 to 0.45 mM) of PF improve sperm capacitation and fertilization of oocytes in vitro in the golden hamster.

The effect of KCI addition on the microstructural, structural and dielectric properties of bismuth vanadate, Bi2VO5.5 (BiV) has been examined. The average grain size of BN ceramics increases with increase in KCl content (from an average grain size of TO to 80 mu m) as a result of the increased liquid-phase formation of KCI, at the grain boundaries. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) carried out on the KCl-added samples indicates an upward shift in the transition temperature (T-c), from 723 K (for BN) to 734 K (for 5 mol% KCl-added BiV). On further increase in the KCI content, T-c shifts down to about 722 K for 10 mol%. This trend is consistent with that of the lattice strain data. The relative permittivity as well as the dielectric loss decrease by more than half of the original values upon the addition of KCI. The relative permittivities of the KCl-added ceramics are comparable with the values predicted by the logarithmic mixture rule. Impedance analyses suggest that the grain boundary resistance of the KCl-added BiV ceramics is higher by two orders of magnitude than that of BN ceramics. The KCl-added BN ceramics exhibit ferroelectric domains and the domain density decreases as the grain boundary region is approached.

Nebulized spray pyrolysis of metal-organic precursors in methanol solution has been employed to prepare powders of TiO2, ZrO2 and PbZr0.5Ti0.5O3 (PZT). This process ensures complete decomposition of the precursors at relatively low temperatures. The particles have been examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy as well as X-ray diffraction. As prepared, the particles are hollow agglomerates of diameter 0.1-1.6 mu m, but after heating to higher temperatures the ultimate size of the particles comprising the agglomerates are considerably smaller (0.1 mu m or less in diameter) and crystalline.

A 1.2 V/1.5 Ah positive-limited nickel/metal hydride cell has been studied to determine its charge-discharge characteristics at different rates in conjunction with its AC impedance data. The faradaic efficiency of the cell is found to be maximum at similar to 70% charge input. The cell has been scaled to a 6 V/1.5 Ah battery. The cycle-life data on the battery suggest that it can sustain a prolonged charge-discharge schedule with little deterioration in its performance.

A bacterial strain belonging to the genus Bacillus isolated by enrichment culture technique using morphine as a sole source of carbon transforms morphine and codeine into 14-hydroxymorphinone and 14-hydroxycodeinone as major and 14-hydroxymorphine and 14-hydroxycodeine as minor metabolites, respectively. When the N-methyl group in morphine and codeine are replaced by higher alkyl groups, the organism still retains its ability to carry out 14-hydroxylation as well as oxidation of the C-6-hydroxyl group in these N-variants, although the level of metabolites formed are considerably low. The organism readily transforms dihydromorphine and dihydrocodeine into only dihydromorphinone and dihydrocodeinone, respectively; suggesting that the 7,8-double bond is a necessary structural feature to carry out 14-hydroxylation reaction. The cell free extract (20,000 x g supernatant), prepared from morphine grown cells, transforms morphine into 14-hydroxymorphinone in the presence of NAD(+), but fails to show activity against testosterone. However, the cell free extract prepared from testosterone grown cells contains significant levels of 17 beta- hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase but shows no activity against morphine.

N,N'-Bis(ferrocenylmethylidene)-p-phenylenediamine 1 and N-(ferrocenylmethylidene) aniline 2 are readily synthesized by Schiff base condensation of appropriate units. Iodine (I-2), 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ), tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (CA), tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) form charge transfer complexes with 1 and 2. IR spectroscopy suggests an increase in the amount of charge transferred from the ferrocenyl ring to the oxidant in the order, I-2 < CA < TCNQ < TCNE approximate to DDQ. EPR spectra of the oxidized binuclear complexes are indicative of localized species containing iron- and carbon-centered radicals. The Mossbauer spectrum of the iodine oxidized complex of 1 reveals the presence of both Fe(III) and Fe(II) centers. Variable temperature magnetic and Mossbauer studies show that the ratio of Fe(III)/Fe(II) centers varies as a function of temperature. The larger Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio at lower temperatures is best explained by a retro charge transfer from the iodide to the iron(III) metal center. There is negligible solvent effect on the formation of the iodine oxidized charge transfer complex of 1. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

The evolution of the dipole mode (DM) events in the Indian Ocean is examined using an ocean model that is driven by the NCEP fluxes for the period 1975-1998. The positive DM events during 1997, 1994 and 1982 and negative DM events during 1996 and 1984-1985 are captured by the model and it reproduces both the surface and subsurface features associated with these events. In its positive phase, the DM is characterized by warmer than normal SST in the western Indian Ocean and cooler than normal SST in the eastern Indian Ocean. The DM events are accompanied by easterly wind anomalies along the equatorial Indian Ocean and upwelling-favorable alongshore wind anomalies along the coast of Sumatra. The Wyrtki jets are weak during positive DM events, and the thermocline is shallower than normal in the eastern Indian Ocean and deeper in the west. This anomaly pattern reverses during negative DM events. During the positive phase of the DM easterly wind anomalies excite an upwelling equatorial Kelvin wave. This Kelvin wave reflects from the eastern boundary as an upwelling Rossby wave which propagates westward across the equatorial Indian Ocean. The anomalies in the eastern Indian Ocean weaken after the Rossby wave passes. A similar process excites a downwelling Rossby wave during the negative phase. This Rossby wave is much weaker but wind forcing in the central equatorial Indian Ocean amplifies the downwelling and increases its westward phase speed. This Rossby wave initiates the deepening of the thermocline in the western Indian Ocean during the following positive phase of the DM. Rossby wave generated in the southern tropical Indian Ocean by Ekman pumping contributes to this warming. Concurrently, the temperature equation of the model shows upwelling and downwelling to be the most important mechanism during both positive events of 1994 and 1997. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. The objective of the present in vitro research was to investigate cardiac tissue cell functions (specifically cardiomyocytes and neurons) on poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) (50:50 wt.%)-carbon nanofiber (CNF) composites to ascertain their potential for myocardial tissue engineering applications. CNF were added to biodegradable PLGA to increase the conductivity and cytocompatibility of pure PLGA. For this reason, different PLGA:CNF ratios (100:0, 75:25, 50:50,25:75, and 0:100 wt.%) were used and the conductivity as well as cytocompatibility of cardiomyocytes and neurons were assessed. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy analysis characterized the microstructure, chemistry, and crystallinity of the materials of interest to this study. The results show that PLGA:CNF materials are conductive and that the conductivity increases as greater amounts of CNF are added to PLGA, from OS m(-1) for pure PLGA (100:0 wt.%) to 5.5 x 10(-3) S m(-1) for pure CNF (0:100 wt.%). The results also indicate that cardiomyocyte density increases with greater amounts of CNF in PLGA (up to 25:75 wt.% PLGA:CNF) for up to 5 days. For neurons a similar trend to cardiomyocytes was observed, indicating that these conductive materials promoted the adhesion and proliferation of two cell types important for myocardial tissue engineering applications. This study thus provides, for the first time, an alternative conductive scaffold using nanotechnology which should be further explored for cardiovascular applications. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. A novel vinyl monomer with an isocyanate functional group, m-isopropenyl-alpha,alpha-dimethylbenzyl-isocyanate (m-TMI), was grafted onto isotactic polypropylene (i-PP) using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as the initiator. This would open up the possibility of using the grafted polymer with the reactive isocyanate group as compatibilizer for blending carbohydrates such as cellulose with. polypropylene. The grafting was carried out in a Brabender Plasticoder at 180degreesC. The effects of monomer and initiator concentrations on the yield of grafting were investigated by performing statistical analysis. While the grafting yield increased with the concentration of DCP at any given concentration of m-TMI, the variation of the grafting yield with m-TMI concentration, for a given concentration of DCP, went through a maximum, the optimum yield of 7.8% (w/w) being obtained at 10 wt.% concentration of both DCP and m-TMI. The grafting reaction is. accompanied by considerable chain scission of I-PP, resulting in a decrease in the molecular weight of the grafted polymer. While the molecular weight drops sharply even at a low concentration of DCP, there occurs no further significant change in the molecular weight even at much higher concentrations of the initiator.

Molecular wires of charge transfer molecules were formed by co-evaporating the 7 7 8 8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane [TCNQ] (acceptor) and Tetrathiafulvalene [TTF] (donor) molecules across prefabricated metal electrodes. Molecular wires of TTF TCNQ were also formed by evaporating single complex of TTF:TCNQ across prefabricated metal electrodes The prefabricated metal electrodes were made using electron beam lithography on SiO2 and glass cover slip substrates. Even though TTF: TCNQ wires grown from both co-evaporation and evaporation techniques show semiconductor like behavior in temperature dependence of resistance they show different activation energies due the difference in stoichiometry of TTF and TCNQ.

This article presents the analysis of ultra wide band (UWB) filler designed using a symmetrical three parallel coupled line resonator in low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) medium: The ground plane with an aperture incorporated in it improves the coupling. Based on circuit models, the designed UWB filter has been analyzed, and the results have been confirmed by experiments. The filter has been realized with Dupont LTCC tape DuPont 951 (that has dielectric constant of 7.8). Maximum insertion loss of the experimental filter is 1.5 dB. The group variation over the pass band of the filter is within 0.2 us. Dimensions of the experimental LTCC filter are 20 x 10 x 0.72 mm. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The storage capacity of an activated carbon bed is studied using a 2D transport model with constant inlet flow conditions. The predicted filling times and variation in bed pressure and temperature are in good agreement with experimental observations obtained using a 1.82 L prototype ANG storage cylinder. Storage efficiencies based on the maximum achievable V/V (volume of gas/volume of container) and filling times are used to quantify the performance of the charging process. For the high permeability beds used in the experiments, storage efficiencies are controlled by the rate of heat removal. Filling times, defined as the time at which the bed pressure reaches 3.5 MPa, range from 120 to 3.4 min for inlet flow rates of 1.0 L min(-1) and 30.0 L min(-1), respectively. The corresponding storage efficiencies, eta(s), vary from 90% to 76%, respectively. Simulations with L/D ratios ranging from 0.35 to 7.8 indicate that the storage efficiencies can be improved with an increase in the LID ratios and/or with water cooled convection. Thus for an inlet flow rate of 30.0 L min(-1), an eta(s) value of 90% can be obtained with water cooling for an L/D ratio of 7.8 and a filling time of a few minutes. In the absence of water cooling the eta(s) value reduces to 83% at the same L/D ratio. Our study suggests that with an appropriate choice of cylinder dimensions, solutions based on convective cooling during adsorptive storage are possible with some compromise in the storage capacity.
