9-Anthryl and 1-pyrenyl terpyridines (1 and 2, respectively), key precursors for the design of novel fluorescent sensors have been synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR, mass spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Twisted molecular conformations for each 1 and 2 were observed in their single crystal structures. Energy minimization calculations for the 1 and 2 using the semi-empirical AM1 method show that the 'twisted' conformation is intrinsic to these systems. We observe interconnected networks of edge-to-face CH...pi interactions, which appear to be cooperative in nature, in each of the crystal structures. The two twisted molecules, although having differently shaped polyaromatic hydrocarbon substituents, show similar patterns of edge-to-face CH...pi interactions. The presently described systems comprise of two aromatic surfaces that are almost orthogonal to each other. This twisted or orthogonal nature of the molecules leads to the formation of interesting multi-directional ladder like supramolecular organizations. A combination of edge-to-face and face-to-face packing modes helps to stabilize these motifs. The ladder like architecture in 1 is helical in nature. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

The title compound, C(14)H(18)F(2)O(2)center dot 0.5H(2)O, a hemihydrate of a C(s)-symmetric unsaturated difluorodiol, crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P2/m (Z = 4). The asymmetric unit contains two crystallographically independent difluorodiol half-molecules, occupying the mirror planes at (x, 0, z) and (x, 1/2, z), and half a molecule of water, lying on the twofold axis at (0, y, 0). Four difluorodiol molecules self-assemble around each solvent water molecule via O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds in a near tetrahedral symmetry to generate a cylindrical column-like architecture.

The three dimensional structure of a protein provides major insights into its function. Protein structure comparison has implications in functional and evolutionary studies. A structural alphabet (SA) is a library of local protein structure prototypes that can abstract every part of protein main chain conformation. Protein Blocks (PBS) is a widely used SA, composed of 16 prototypes, each representing a pentapeptide backbone conformation defined in terms of dihedral angles. Through this description, the 3D structural information can be translated into a 1D sequence of PBs. In a previous study, we have used this approach to compare protein structures encoded in terms of PBs. A classical sequence alignment procedure based on dynamic programming was used, with a dedicated PB Substitution Matrix (SM). PB-based pairwise structural alignment method gave an excellent performance, when compared to other established methods for mining. In this study, we have (i) refined the SMs and (ii) improved the Protein Block Alignment methodology (named as iPBA). The SM was normalized in regards to sequence and structural similarity. Alignment of protein structures often involves similar structural regions separated by dissimilar stretches. A dynamic programming algorithm that weighs these local similar stretches has been designed. Amino acid substitutions scores were also coupled linearly with the PB substitutions. iPBA improves (i) the mining efficiency rate by 6.8% and (ii) more than 82% of the alignments have a better quality. A higher efficiency in aligning multi-domain proteins could be also demonstrated. The quality of alignment is better than DALI and MUSTANG in 81.3% of the cases. Thus our study has resulted in an impressive improvement in the quality of protein structural alignment. (C) 2011 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

An experimental setup has been realized to measure weak magnetic moments which can be modulated at radio frequencies (similar to 1-5 MHz). Using an optimized radio-frequency (RF) pickup coil and lock-in amplifier, an experimental sensitivity of 10(-15) Am(2) corresponding to 10(-18) emu has been demonstrated with a 1 s time constant. The detection limit at room temperature is 9.3 x 10(-16) Am(2)/root Hz limited by Johnson noise of the coil. The setup has been used to directly measure the magnetic moment due to a small number (similar to 7 x 10(8)) of spin polarized electrons generated by polarization modulated optical radiation in GaAs and Ge. The tie lines delineating ion-exchange equilibria between FeCr2O4FeAl2O4 spinel solid solution and Cr2O3Al2O3 solid solution with corundum structure have been determined at 1373 K by electron microprobe and EDAX point count analysis of oxide phases equilibrated with metallic iron. Activities in the spinel solid solution are derived from the tie lines and the thermodynamic data on Cr2O3Al2O3 solid solution available in the literature. The oxygen potentials corresponding to the tie-line composition of oxide phases in equilibrium with metallic iron were measured using solid oxide galvanic cells with CaOZrO2 and Y2O3ThO2 electrolytes. These electrochemical measurements also yield activities in the spinel solid solution, in good agreement with those obtained from tie lines. The activity-composition relationship in the spinel solid solution is analysed in terms of the intra-crystalline ion exchange between the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the spinel structures. The ion exchange is governed by site-preference energies of the cations and the entropy of cations mixing on each site.

The activity of strontium in liquid Al-Sr alloys (X(Sr) less-than-or-equal-to 0.17) at 1323 K has been determined using the Knudsen effusion-mass loss technique. At higher concentrations (X(Sr) greater-than-or-equal-to 0.28), the activity of strontium has been determined by the pseudoisopiestic technique. Activity of aluminium has been derived by Gibbs-Duhem integration. The concentration - concentration structure factor of Bhatia and Thornton at zero wave vector has been computed from the thermodynamic data. The behaviour of the mean square thermal fluctuation in composition and the thermodynamic mixing functions suggest association tendencies in the liquid state. The associated solution model with Al2Sr as the predominant complex can account for the properties of the liquid alloy. Thermodynamic data for the intermetallic compunds in the Al-Sr system have been derived using the phase diagram and the Gibbs' energy and enthalpy of mixing of liquid alloys. The data indicate the need for redetermination of the phase diagram near the strontium-rich corner.

Enantiospecific total synthesis of the crinipellin mentioned in the title was accomplished. In the present synthesis cyclopentane ring in campholenaldehyde was identified as the B-ring, two intramolecular rhodium carbenoid CH insertion reactions were employed for the construction of the A and C rings, and an intramolecular Michael addition reaction was utilized for the construction of the D-ring of crinipellin. In this paper we present the effect of thickness variation of hole injection and hole blocking layers on the performance of fluorescent green organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). A number of OLED devices have been fabricated with combinations of hole injecting and hole blocking layers of varying thicknesses. Even though hole blocking and hole injection layers have opposite functions, yet there is a particular combination of their thicknesses when they function in conjunction and luminous efficiency and power efficiency are maximized. The optimum thickness of CuPc (Copper(II) phthalocyanine) layer, used as hole injection layer and BCP (2,9 dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) used as hole blocking layer were found to be 18 nm and 10 nm respectively. It is with this delicate adjustment of thicknesses, charge balancing is achieved and luminous efficiency and power efficiency were optimized. The maximum luminous efficiency of 3.82 cd/A at a current density of 24.45 mA/cm(2) and maximum power efficiency of 2.61 lm/W at a current density of 5.3 mA/cm(2) were achieved. We obtained luminance of 5993 cd/m(2) when current density was 140 mA/cm(2). The EL spectra was obtained for the LEDs and found that it has a peaking at 524 nm of wavelength. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Objective: Human papillomavirus oncoproteins E6 and E7 down modulate Toll-like receptor (TLR) 9 expression in infected keratinocytes. We explored the status of expression and function of TLR7, TLR8, and TLR9 in primary human Langerhans cells (LCs) isolated from cervical tumors. Methodology: Single-cell suspensions were made from fresh tissues of squamous cell carcinoma (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage IB2); myeloid dendritic cells were purified using CD1c magnetic activated cell separation kits. Langerhans cells were further flow sorted into CD1a(+)CD207(+) cells. Acute monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1-derived LCs (moLCs) formed the controls. mRNA from flow-sorted LCs was reverse transcribed to cDNA and TLR7, TLR8, and TLR9 amplified. Monocyte-derived Langerhans cells and cervical tumor LCs were stimulated with TLR7, TLR8, and TLR9 ligands. Culture supernatants were assayed for interleukin (IL) 1 beta, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12p70, interferon (IFN) alpha, interferon gamma, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha by Luminex multiplex bead array. Human papillomavirus was genotyped. Results: We have for the first time demonstrated that the acute monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1 can be differentiated into LCs in vitro. Although these moLCs. expressed all the 3 TLRs, tumor LCs expressed TLR7 and TLR8, but uniformly lacked TLR9. Also, moLCs secreted IL-6, IL-1 beta, and tumor necrosis factor alpha to TLR8 ligand and interferon alpha in response to TLR9 ligand; in contrast, tumor LCs did not express any cytokine to any of the 3 TLR ligands. Human papillomavirus type 16 was one of the common human papillomavirus types in all cases. Conclusions: Cervical tumor LCs lacked TLR9 expression and were functionally anergic to all the 3: TLR7, TLR8, and TLR9 ligands, which may play a crucial role in immune tolerance. The exact location of block(s) in TLR7 and TLR8 signaling needs to be investigated, which would have important immunotherapeutic implications.

We present results of surface mechanical and particle tracking measurements of nanoparticles trapped at the air-water interface as a function of their areal density. We monitor both the surface pressure (II) and isothermal compression modulus (epsilon) as well as the dynamics of nanoparticle clusters, using fluorescence confocal microscopy while they are compressed to very high density near the two dimensional close packing density Phi similar to 0.82. We observe non-monotonic variation in both epsilon and the dynamic heterogeneity, characterized by the dynamical susceptibility chi(4) with Phi, in such high density monolayers. We provide insight into the underlying nature of such transitions in close packed high density nanoparticle monolayers in terms of the morphology and flexibility of these soft colloidal particles.. We discuss the significance our results in the context of related studies on two dimensional granular or colloidal systems. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The reentrant low temperature phase of the perovskite manganite LaMnO3+delta (delta=0.22) has been investigated with ac susceptibility and dc magnetization studies. A critical examination of the memory effects in ac susceptibility leads us to the conclusion that the slow dynamics in the system is a consequence of collective relaxation processes resulting from interactions between ferromagnetic clusters, whose presence was indicated in earlier studies. Here, we postulate that the collective behavior is due to the existence of long-range (dipolar) interactions between the large ferromagnetic `superspins'. This is also confirmed by an abnormally large microscopic spin-flip time (similar to 10(-9) s) compared to a canonical spin glass. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we discuss the issues related to word recognition in born-digital word images. We introduce a novel method of power-law transformation on the word image for binarization. We show the improvement in image binarization and the consequent increase in the recognition performance of OCR engine on the word image. The optimal value of gamma for a word image is automatically chosen by our algorithm with fixed stroke width threshold. We have exhaustively experimented our algorithm by varying the gamma and stroke width threshold value. By varying the gamma value, we found that our algorithm performed better than the results reported in the literature. On the ICDAR Robust Reading Systems Challenge-1: Word Recognition Task on born digital dataset, as compared to the recognition rate of 61.5% achieved by TH-OCR after suitable pre-processing by Yang et. al. and 63.4% by ABBYY Fine Reader (used as baseline by the competition organizers without any preprocessing), we achieved 82.9% using Omnipage OCR applied on the images after being processed by our algorithm.

We have benchmarked the maximum obtainable recognition accuracy on five publicly available standard word image data sets using semi-automated segmentation and a commercial OCR. These images have been cropped from camera captured scene images, born digital images (BDI) and street view images. Using the Matlab based tool developed by us, we have annotated at the pixel level more than 3600 word images from the five data sets. The word images binarized by the tool, as well as by our own midline analysis and propagation of segmentation (MAPS) algorithm are recognized using the trial version of Nuance Omnipage OCR and these two results are compared with the best reported in the literature. The benchmark word recognition rates obtained on ICDAR 2003, Sign evaluation, Street view, Born-digital and ICDAR 2011 data sets are 83.9%, 89.3%, 79.6%, 88.5% and 86.7%, respectively. The results obtained from MAPS binarized word images without the use of any lexicon are 64.5% and 71.7% for ICDAR 2003 and 2011 respectively, and these values are higher than the best reported values in the literature of 61.1% and 41.2%, respectively. MAPS results of 82.8% for BDI 2011 dataset matches the performance of the state of the art method based on power law transform.
