In this paper, we give a method for probabilistic assignment to the Realistic Abductive Reasoning Model, The knowledge is assumed to be represented in the form of causal chaining, namely, hyper-bipartite network. Hyper-bipartite network is the most generalized form of knowledge representation for which, so far, there has been no way of assigning probability to the explanations, First, the inference mechanism using realistic abductive reasoning model is briefly described and then probability is assigned to each of the explanations so as to pick up the explanations in the decreasing order of plausibility.

The aerodynamics of the blast wave produced by laser ablation is studied using the piston analogy. The unsteady one-dimensional gasdynamic equations governing the flow an solved under assumption of self-similarity. The solutions are utilized to obtain analytical expressions for the velocity, density, pressure and temperature distributions. The results predict. all the experimentally observed features of the laser produced blast waves.

A new ruthenium(II) complex of the type [Ru(O2CMe)(MeCN)2(PPh3)2](CiO4) (1) has been isolated from a reaction between Ru2Cl(O2CMe), and PPh3 in MeCN followed by the addition of NaClO4. The structure of 1 is determined by single crystal X-ray studies. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic space group C2/m with the following unit cell dimensions for the C42H39N2O6P2ClRu(M = 866.15): a = 23.295(1)angstrom, b = 23.080(1)angstrom, c = 9.159(1)angstrom, beta = 107.32(1)-degrees, V = 4701(1)angstrom3, Z = 4, D(c) = 1.224 gcm-3, lambda(Mo - K-alpha) = 0.7107 angstrom, mu(Mo - K-alpha) = 4.09 cm-1, T = 293K, R = 0.081 (R(w) = 0.094) for 2860 reflections with I greater-than-or-equal-to 3-sigma(I) and g = 0.015853. In the complex cation, the symmetry about the metal centre is essentially octahedral showing the presence of a chelating acetato, two cis-oriented MeCN and two trans-disposed PPh3 ligands. The mechanistic aspects of the core cleavage reaction are discussed.

The authors describe the constructional features of a controller for operating an autonomous refrigeration unit powered by a field of photovoltaic panels and backed up by a generator set. The controller enables three voltage levels of operation of an inverter to meet the start, run and off cycle conditions of the refrigerator compressor. The algorithm considers several input and output parameters and status signals from each subsystem of the unit to deduce a control strategy. Such units find application for storage of vaccines and life-saving medicines requiring uninterrupted refrigeration, in medical shops, rural health centres, veterinary laboratories etc.

Experimental realization of quantum information processing in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been well established. Implementation of conditional phase-shift gate has been a significant step, which has lead to realization of important algorithms such as Grover's search algorithm and quantum Fourier transform. This gate has so far been implemented in NMR by using coupling evolution method. We demonstrate here the implementation of the conditional phase-shift gate using transition selective pulses. As an application of the gate, we demonstrate Grover's search algorithm and quantum Fourier transform by simulations and experiments using transition selective pulses. A method for the explicit determination of the polar decomposition (and the related problem of finding tensor square roots) when the underlying vector space dimension n is arbitrary (but finite), is proposed. The method uses the spectral resolution, and avoids the determination of eigenvectors when the tensor is invertible. For any given dimension n, an appropriately constructed van der Monde matrix is shown to play a key role in the construction of each of the component matrices (and their inverses) in the polar decomposition.

he thickness dependence of the electrical properties in the thin films of uniaxial SrBi2Nb2O9 has been studied in this report. According to many published literatures, it could be an effective way to identify the basic conduction process. The laser ablation was chosen as the deposition technique to ensure an oriented growth and a proper stoichiometric deposition. The structural, dielectric and conduction properties were studied as a function of thickness. The films showed good ferroelectric properties, an ordered growth, and a space-charge controlled conduction process, which was double checked by reversing the polarity of the applied voltage, and also by examining the high field current response of the sample varying in thickness.

Cavitation-noise measurements from an axisymmetric body with ‘controlled’ generation of cavitation are reported. The control was achieved by seeding artificial nuclei in the boundary layer by electrolysis. It was possible to alter the number density of nuclei by varying the electrolysis voltage, polarity and the geometry of the electrode. From the observed trend of cavitation-noise data it is postulated that there exists an ‘interference effect’ which influences cavitation noise. When the nucleus-number density is high and cavitation numbers are low this effect is strong. Under these conditions the properties of cavitation noise are found to differ considerably from those expected based on theories concerning noise from single-spherical-bubble cavitation.

As with 1,2-diphenylethane (dpe), X-ray crystallographic methods measure the central bond in meso-3,4-diphenylhexane-2,5-done (dphd) as significantly shorter than normal for an sp(3)-sp(3) bond. The same methods measure the benzylic (ethane C-Ph) bonds in dphd as unusually long for sp(3)-sp(2) liaisons. Torsional motions of the phenyl rings about the C-Ph bonds have been proposed as the artifacts behind the result of a 'short' central bond in dpe. While a similar explanation can, presumably, hold for the even 'shorter' central bond in dphd, it cannot account for the 'long' C-Ph bonds. The phenyl groups, departing much from regular hexagonal shape, adopt highly skewed conformations with respect to the plane constituted by the four central atoms. It is thought that-the thermal motions of the phenyl rings, conditioned by the potential wells in which they are ensconced in the unit cell, are largely libratory around their normal axes. In what appears to be a straightforward explanation under the 'rigid-body' concept, it appears that these libratory motions of the phenyl rings, that account, at the same time, for the 'short' central bond, are the artifacts behind the 'long' measurement of the C-Ph bonds. These motions could be superimposed on torsional motions analogous to those proposed in the case of dpe. An inspection of the ORTEP diagram from the 298 K data on dphd clearly suggests these possibilities. Supportive evidence for these qualitative explanations from an analysis of the differences between the mean square displacements of C(1) and C(7)/C(1a) and C(7a) based on the 'rigid-body model' is discussed. We report one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of nearly mono-disperse 3-mercaptopropionic acid capped water-soluble cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) using an air stable Te source. The optical and electrical characteristics were also studied here. It was shown that the hydrothermal synthesis could be tuned to synthesize nano structures of uniform size close to nanometers. The emissions of the CdTe QDs thus synthesized were in the range of 500-700 nm by varying the duration of synthesis. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the emission peaks is relatively narrow (40-90 nm), which indicates a nearly uniform distribution of QD size. The structural and optical properties of the QDs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL) and Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. The photoluminescence quenching of CdTe QDs in the presence of L-cysteine and DNA confirms its biocompatibility and its utility for biosensing applications. The room temperature current-voltage characteristics of QD film on ITO coated glass substrate show an electrically induced switching between states with high and low conductivities. The phenomenon is explained on the basis of charge confinement in quantum dots. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Liquid water is known to exhibit remarkable thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies, ranging from solvation properties in supercritical state to an apparent divergence of the linear response functions at a low temperature. Anomalies in various dynamic properties of water have also been observed in the hydration layer of proteins, DNA grooves and inside the nanocavity, such as reverse micelles and nanotubes. Here we report studies on the molecular origin of these anomalies in supercooled water, in the grooves of DNA double helix and reverse micelles. The anomalies have been discussed in terms of growing correlation length and intermittent population fluctuation of 4- and 5-coordinated species. We establish correlation between thermodynamic response functions and mean squared species number fluctuation. Lifetime analysis of 4- and 5-coordinated species reveals interesting differences between the role of the two species in supercooled and constrained water. The nature and manifestations of the apparent and much discussed liquid-liquid transition under confinement are found to be markedly different from that in the bulk. We find an interesting `faster than bulk' relaxation in reverse micelles which we attribute to frustration effects created by competition between the correlations imposed by surface interactions and that imposed by hydrogen bond network of water.

The Reeb graph of a scalar function represents the evolution of the topology of its level sets. This paper describes a near-optimal output-sensitive algorithm for computing the Reeb graph of scalar functions defined over manifolds or non-manifolds in any dimension. Key to the simplicity and efficiency of the algorithm is an alternate definition of the Reeb graph that considers equivalence classes of level sets instead of individual level sets. The algorithm works in two steps. The first step locates all critical points of the function in the domain. Critical points correspond to nodes in the Reeb graph. Arcs connecting the nodes are computed in the second step by a simple search procedure that works on a small subset of the domain that corresponds to a pair of critical points. The paper also describes a scheme for controlled simplification of the Reeb graph and two different graph layout schemes that help in the effective presentation of Reeb graphs for visual analysis of scalar fields. Finally, the Reeb graph is employed in four different applications-surface segmentation, spatially-aware transfer function design, visualization of interval volumes, and interactive exploration of time-varying data.

The generalizations of the Onsager model for the radial boundary layer and the Carrier-Maslen model for the end-cap axial boundary layer in a high-speed rotating cylinder are formulated for studying the secondary gas flow due to wall heating and due to insertion of mass, momentum and energy into the cylinder. The generalizations have wider applicability than the original Onsager and Carrier-Maslen models, because they are not restricted to the limit A >> 1, though they are restricted to the limit R e >> 1 and a high-aspect-ratio cylinder whose length/diameter ratio is large. Here, the stratification parameter A = root m Omega(2)R(2)/2k(B)T). This parameter A is the ratio of the peripheral speed, Omega R, to the most probable molecular speed, root 2k(B)T/m, the Reynolds number Re = rho w Omega R(2)/mu, where m is the molecular mass, Omega and R are the rotational speed and radius of the cylinder, k(B) is the Boltzmann constant, T is the gas temperature, rho(w) is the gas density at wall, and mu is the gas viscosity. In the case of wall forcing, analytical solutions are obtained for the sixth-order generalized Onsager equations for the master potential, and for the fourth-order generalized Carrier-Maslen equation for the velocity potential. For the case of mass/momentum/energy insertion into the flow, the separation-of-variables procedure is used, and the appropriate homogeneous boundary conditions are specified so that the linear operators in the axial and radial directions are self-adjoint. The discrete eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the linear operators (sixth-order and second-order in the radial and axial directions for the Onsager equation, and fourth-order and second-order in the axial and radial directions for the Carrier-Maslen equation) are determined. These solutions are compared with direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) simulations. The comparison reveals that the boundary conditions in the simulations and analysis have to be matched with care. The commonly used `diffuse reflection' boundary conditions at solid walls in DSMC simulations result in a non-zero slip velocity as well as a `temperature slip' (gas temperature at the wall is different from wall temperature). These have to be incorporated in the analysis in order to make quantitative predictions. In the case of mass/momentum/energy sources within the flow, it is necessary to ensure that the homogeneous boundary conditions are accurately satisfied in the simulations. When these precautions are taken, there is excellent agreement between analysis and simulations, to within 10 %, even when the stratification parameter is as low as 0.707, the Reynolds number is as low as 100 and the aspect ratio (length/diameter) of the cylinder is as low as 2, and the secondary flow velocity is as high as 0.2 times the maximum base flow velocity. The predictions of the generalized models are also significantly better than those of the original Onsager and Carrier-Maslen models, which are restricted to thin boundary layers in the limit of high stratification parameter.

Pulse retardation method of Breit and Tuve has been modified to record continuously the equivalent height as well as the intensity of reflections from the ionosphere. Synchronized pulses are transmitted, and the received ground pulse and the reflected pulses, after amplification and suitable distortion, are applied to the focusing cylinder of a cathode ray tube the horizontal deflecting plates of which are connected to a synchronized linear time base circuit. The pattern on the screen is composed of a bright straight line corresponding to the time base with dark gaps corresponding to the received pulses. The distance between the initial points of the gaps represents retardation while the widths of the gaps correspond to the intensity of the pulses. The pattern is photographed on a vertically moving film. One of the first few records taken at Bangalore on 4 megacycles is reproduced. It shows, among other things, that the less retarded component of magneto-ionic splitting from the F layer is present most of the time. Whenever the longer retardation component does occur, it has stronger intensity than the former. Towards the late evening hours, just before disappearing, when the F layer rises and exhibits magnetoionic splitting, the intensity of the less retarded component is extremely low compared with the other component.
