Chips produced by turning a commercial grade pure magnesium billet were consolidated by solid state recycling technique of cold compaction followed by hot extrusion. The cold compacted billets were extruded at four different temperatures: 250 degrees C, 300 degrees C, 350 degrees C and 400 degrees C. For the purpose of comparison, cast magnesium (pure) billets were extruded under similar conditions. Extruded products were characterized for damping properties. Damping capacity and dynamic modulus was measured as a function of time and temperature at a fixed frequency of 5 Hz 10 to 14% increase in damping capacity was observed in chip consolidated products compared to reference material. Microstructural changes after the temperature sweep tests were examined. Chip boundaries present in consolidated products were observed to suppress grain coarsening which otherwise was significant in reference material. The present work is significant from the viewpoint of recycling of machined chips and development of sustainable manufacturing processes. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A careful comparison of the experimental results reported in the literature reveals different variations of the melting temperature even for the same materials. Though there are different theoretical models, thermodynamic model has been extensively used to understand different variations of size-dependent melting of nanoparticles. There are different hypotheses such as homogeneous melting (HMH), liquid nucleation and growth (LNG) and liquid skin melting (LSM) to resolve different variations of melting temperature as reported in the literature. HMH and LNG account for the linear variation where as LSM is applied to understand the nonlinear behaviour in the plot of melting temperature against reciprocal of particle size. However, a bird's eye view reveals that either HMH or LSM has been extensively used by experimentalists. It has also been observed that not a single hypothesis can explain the size-dependent melting in the complete range. Therefore we describe an approach which can predict the plausible hypothesis for a given data set of the size-dependent melting temperature. A variety of data have been analyzed to ascertain the hypothesis and to test the approach.

In recent times the demand of ultra-low carbon steel (ULCS) with improved mechanical properties such as good ductility and good workability has been increased as it is used to produce cold-rolled steel sheets for automobiles. For producing ULCS efficiently, it is necessary to improve the productivity of the vacuum degassers such as RH, DH and tank degasser. Recently, it has been claimed that using a new process, called REDA (revolutionary degassing activator), one can achieve the carbon content below 10 ppm in less time. As such, REDA process has not been studied thoroughly in terms of fluid flow and mass transfer which is a necessary precursor to understand and design this process. Therefore, momentum and mass transfer of the process has been studied by solving momentum and species balance equations along with k-epsilon turbulent model in two-dimension (2D) for REDA process. Similarly, computational fluid dynamic studies have been made in 2D for tank and RH degassers to compare them with REDA process. Computational results have been validated with published experimental and theoretical data. It is found that REDA process is the most efficient among all these processes in terms of mixing efficiency. Fluid flow phenomena have been studied in details for REDA process by varying gas flow rate, depth of immersed snorkel in the steel, diameter of the snorkel and change in vacuum pressure. It is found that design of snorkel affects the melt circulation in the bath significantly.

Layer-wise, distance-dependent orientational relaxation of water confined in reverse micelles (RM) is studied using theoretical and computational tools. We use both a newly constructed ``spins on a ring'' (SOR) Ising-type model (with Shore-Zwanzig rotational dynamics) and atomistic simulations with explicit water. Our study explores the effect of reverse micelle size and role of intermolecular correlations, compromised by the presence of a highly polar surface, on the distance (from the interface) dependence of water relaxation. The ``spins on a ring'' model can capture some aspects of distance dependence of relaxation, such as acceleration of orientational relaxation at intermediate layers. In atomistic simulations, layer-wise decomposition of hydrogen bond formation pattern clearly reveals that hydrogen bond arrangement of water at a certain distance away from the surface can remain frustrated due to the interaction with the polar surface head groups. This layer-wise analysis also reveals the presence of a non-monotonic slow relaxation component which can be attributed to this frustration effect and which is accentuated in small to intermediate size RMs. For large size RMs, the long time component decreases monotonically from the interface to the interior of the RMs with slowest relaxation observed at the interface. Room temperature, uniaxial compression creep experiments were performed on micro-/nano-sized pillars (having diameters in the range of 250-2000 nm) of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) to investigate the influence of sample size on the time-dependent plastic deformation behavior in amorphous alloys. Experimental results reveal that plastic deformation indeed occurs at ambient temperature and at stresses that are well below the nominal quasi-static yield stress. At a given stress, higher total strains accrue in the smaller specimens. In all cases, plastic deformation was found to be devoid of shear bands, i.e., it occurs in homogeneous manner. The stress exponent obtained from the slope of the linear relation between strain rate and applied stress also shows a strong size effect, which is rationalized in terms of the amount of free volume created during deformation and the surface-to-volume ratio of the pillar. Organic plastic crystalline soft matter ion conductors are interesting alternatives to liquid electrolytes in electrochemical storage devices such as Lithium-ion batteries. The solvent dynamics plays a major role in determining the ion transport in plastic crystalline ion conductors. We present here an analysis of the frequency-dependent ionic conductivity of succinonitrile-based plastic crystalline ion conductors at varying salt composition (0.005 to 1 M) and temperature (-20 to 60 degrees C) using time-temperature superposition principle (TTSP). The main motivation of the work has been to establish comprehensive insight into the ion transport mechanism from a single method viz, impedance spectroscopy rather than employing cluster of different characterization methods probing various length and time scales. The TTSP remarkably aids in explicit identification of the extent of the roles of solvent dynamics and ion-ion interactions on the effective conductivity of the orientationally disordered plastic crystalline ion conductors.

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of an optimal control problem for the time-dependent Kirchhoff-Love plate whose middle surface has a very rough boundary. We identify the limit problem which is an optimal control problem for the limit equation with a different cost functional.

Building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) applications are gaining widespread popularity. The performance of any given BIPV system is dependent on prevalent meteorological factors, site conditions and system characteristics. Investigations pertaining to the performance assessment of photovoltaic (PV) systems are generally confined to either controlled environment-chambers or computer-based simulation studies. Such investigations fall short of providing a realistic insight into how a PV system actually performs real-time. Solar radiation and the PV cell temperature are amongst the most crucial parameters affecting PV output. The current paper deals with the real-time performance assessment of a recently commissioned 5.25 kW, BIPV system installed at the Center for Sustainable Technologies, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The overall average system efficiency was found to be 6% for the period May 2011-April 2012. This paper provides a critical appraisal of PV system performance based on ground realities, particularly characteristic to tropical (moderate) regions such as Bangalore, India. Since Brutsaert and Neiber (1977), recession curves are widely used to analyse subsurface systems of river basins by expressing -dQ/dt as a function of Q, which typically take a power law form: -dQ/dt=kQ, where Q is the discharge at a basin outlet at time t. Traditionally recession flows are modelled by single reservoir models that assume a unique relationship between -dQ/dt and Q for a basin. However, recent observations indicate that -dQ/dt-Q relationship of a basin varies greatly across recession events, indicating the limitation of such models. In this study, the dynamic relationship between -dQ/dt and Q of a basin is investigated through the geomorphological recession flow model which models recession flows by considering the temporal evolution of its active drainage network (the part of the stream network of the basin draining water at time t). Two primary factors responsible for the dynamic relationship are identified: (i) degree of aquifer recharge (ii) spatial variation of rainfall. Degree of aquifer recharge, which is likely to be controlled by (effective) rainfall patterns, influences the power law coefficient, k. It is found that k has correlation with past average streamflow, which confirms the notion that dynamic -dQ/dt-Q relationship is caused by the degree of aquifer recharge. Spatial variation of rainfall is found to have control on both the exponent, , and the power law coefficient, k. It is noticed that that even with same and k, recession curves can be different, possibly due to their different (recession) peak values. This may also happen due to spatial variation of rainfall. The study presents a 3-year time series data on dissolved trace elements and rare earth elements (REEs) in a monsoon-dominated river basin, the Nethravati River in tropical Southwestern India. The river basin lies on the metamorphic transition boundary which separates the Peninsular Gneiss and Southern Granulitic province belonging to Archean and Tertiary-Quaternary period (Western Dharwar Craton). The basin lithology is mainly composed of granite gneiss, charnockite and metasediment. This study highlights the importance of time series data for better estimation of metal fluxes and to understand the geochemical behaviour of metals in a river basin. The dissolved trace elements show seasonality in the river water metal concentrations forming two distinct groups of metals. First group is composed of heavy metals and minor elements that show higher concentrations during dry season and lesser concentrations during the monsoon season. Second group is composed of metals belonging to lanthanides and actinides with higher concentration in the monsoon and lower concentrations during the dry season. Although the metal concentration of both the groups appears to be controlled by the discharge, there are important biogeochemical processes affecting their concentration. This includes redox reactions (for Fe, Mn, As, Mo, Ba and Ce) and pH-mediated adsorption/desorption reactions (for Ni, Co, Cr, Cu and REEs). The abundance of Fe and Mn oxyhydroxides as a result of redox processes could be driving the geochemical redistribution of metals in the river water. There is a Ce anomaly (Ce/Ce*) at different time periods, both negative and positive, in case of dissolved phase, whereas there is positive anomaly in the particulate and bed sediments. The Ce anomaly correlates with the variations in the dissolved oxygen indicating the redistribution of Ce between particulate and dissolved phase under acidic to neutral pH and lower concentrations of dissolved organic carbon. Unlike other tropical and major world rivers, the effect of organic complexation on metal variability is negligible in the Nethravati River water.

A comprehensive experimental study has been made on angular sand to investigate various aspects of mechanical behavior. A hollow cylinder torsion testing apparatus is used in this program to apply a range of stress conditions on this angular quartzitic fine sand under monotonic drained shear. The effect of the magnitude and inclination of the principal stresses on an element of sand is studied through these experiments. This magnitude and inclination of the principal stresses are presented as an ``ensemble measure of fabric in sands''. This ensemble measure of fabric in the sands evolves through the shearing process, and reaches the final state, which indeed has a unique fabric. The sand shows significant variation in strength with changing inclination of the principal stresses. The locus of the final stress state in principal stress space is also mapped from these series of experiments. Additional aspects of non-coaxiality, a benchmarking exercise with a few constitutive models is presented here. This experimental approach albeit indirect shows that a unique state which is dependent on the fabric, density and confining stress exists. This suite of experiments provides a well-controlled data set for a clear understanding on the mechanical behavior of sands.

The quantum statistical mechanical propagator for a harmonic oscillator with a time-dependent force constant, m omega(2)(t), has been investigated in the past and was found to have only a formal solution in terms of the solutions of certain ordinary differential equations. Such path integrals are frequently encountered in semiclassical path integral evaluations and having exact analytical expressions for such path integrals is of great interest. In a previous work, we had obtained the exact propagator for motion in an arbitrary time-dependent harmonic potential in the overdamped limit of friction using phase space path integrals in the context of Levy flights - a result that can be easily extended to Brownian motion. In this paper, we make a connection between the overdamped Brownian motion and the imaginary time propagator of quantum mechanics and thereby get yet another way to evaluate the latter exactly. We find that explicit analytic solution for the quantum statistical mechanical propagator can be written when the time-dependent force constant has the form omega(2)(t) = lambda(2)(t) - d lambda(t)/dt where lambda(t) is any arbitrary function of t and use it to evaluate path integrals which have not been evaluated previously. We also employ this method to arrive at a formal solution of the propagator for both Levy flights and Brownian subjected to a time-dependent harmonic potential in the underdamped limit of friction. This paper presents exploratory and statistical analyses of the activity-travel behaviour of non-workers in Bangalore city in India. The study summarises the socio-demographic characteristics as well as the activity-travel behaviour of non-workers using a primary activity-travel survey data collected by the authors. Where possible, the research also compares the analysis findings with the case studies on activity-travel behaviour of non-workers, carried out in developed and developing countries. This gives an opportunity to understand the differences/similarities in the activity-travel behaviour of non-workers across diverse socio-cultural settings. The preliminary exploratory analysis shed light on the differences in activity participation, trip chaining, time-of-day preference for trip departure, and mode use behaviour of non-workers in Bangalore city. Statistical models were developed for investigating the effects of individual and household socio-demographics, land use parameters, and travel context attributes on activity participation, trip chaining, time-of-day choice, and mode choice decisions of non-workers. A few important results of the analysis are the influence of viewing television at home on out-of-home activity participation and trip-chaining behaviour, and the impact of in-home maintenance activity duration on time-of-day choice. Further, based on the findings of the initial analyses, an attempt has been made in this study to develop an integrated model that links time allocation, time-of-day choice, and trip chaining behaviour of non-workers. The study also discusses the implications of the research findings for transportation planning and policy for Bangalore city. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We present a framework for obtaining reliable solid-state charge and optical excitations and spectra from optimally tuned range-separated hybrid density functional theory. The approach, which is fully couched within the formal framework of generalized Kohn-Sham theory, allows for the accurate prediction of exciton binding energies. We demonstrate our approach through first principles calculations of one- and two-particle excitations in pentacene, a molecular semiconducting crystal, where our work is in excellent agreement with experiments and prior computations. We further show that with one adjustable parameter, set to produce the known band gap, this method accurately predicts band structures and optical spectra of silicon and lithium fluoride, prototypical covalent and ionic solids. Our findings indicate that for a broad range of extended bulk systems, this method may provide a computationally inexpensive alternative to many-body perturbation theory, opening the door to studies of materials of increasing size and complexity.

Folivory, being a dietary constraint, can affect the social time of colobines. In the present study, we compared food items and activity budgets of two closely related species of colobines inhabiting South India, i.e. the Hanuman langur (Semnopithecus hypoleucos) and Nilgiri langur (Semnopithecus johnii), to determine whether folivory had an impact on social time in these species. Our study established that Nilgiri langurs were more folivorous than Hanuman langurs. Nilgiri langurs spent much less time on social activities, but more time on resting, although the social organization of S. hypoleucos was similar to that of the Nilgiri langur. The enforced resting time for fermentation of leafy food items may have reduced the time available for social interactions, which in turn affected the social time in Nilgiri langurs. By comparing the data from previous studies on other Hanuman langur species, we found that S. hypoleucos spent a similar amount of time on social activities as Semnopithecus entellus. Hence, the social behaviour of S. entellus and S. hypoleucos is phylogenetically highly conservative. (C) 2015 S. Karger AG, Basel
