Community diversity and the population abundance of a particular group of species are controlled by immediate environment, inter-and intra-species interactions, landscape conditions, historical events and evolutionary processes. Nestedness is a measure of order in an ecological system, referring to the order in which the number of species is related to area or other factors. In this study we have studied the nestedness pattern in stream diatom assemblages in 24 stream sites of central Western Ghats, and report 98 taxa from the streams of central Western Ghats region. The communities show highly significant nested pattern. The Mantel test of matrix revealed a strong relationship between species assemblages and environmental conditions at the sites. A significant relationship between species assemblage and environmental condition was observed. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that environmental conditions differed markedly across the sampling sites, with the first three components explaining 78% of variance. Species composition of diatoms is significantly correlated with environmental distance across geographical extent. The current pattern suggests that micro-environment at regional levels influences the species composition of epilithic diatoms in streams. The nestedness shown by the diatom community was highly significant, even though it had a high proportion of idiosyncratic species, characterized with high numbers of cosmopolitan species, whereas the nested species were dominated by endemic species. PCA identifies ionic parameters and nutrients as the major features which determine the characteristics of the sampling sites. Hence the local water quality parameters are the major factors in deciding the diatom species assemblages.

In this paper the question of the extent to which truncated heavy tailed random vectors, taking values in a Banach space, retain the characteristic features of heavy tailed random vectors, is answered from the point of view of the central limit theorem.

Two distinct ferromagnetic phases are present in LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 for which the spin-only magnetic moment calculated from the high temperature dc susceptibility is found to be unusually high. Such a high moment can only be accounted for by assigning the valence state of the cations to Mn2+-Co4+. This is unrealistic as the earlier report based on X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has suggested the valence state to be mainly Mn4+-Co2+ with traces of Co3+. Also from our studies using XAS, it is found that the valence state is mainly Mn4+-Co2+. In addition, no notable difference is observed in the minor Co3+ present in both phases. Our results based on X-ray magnetic circular dichroism studies (XMCD) reveal the presence of ``distinct'' high orbital moment associated with Co2+ for both phases. Thus it is found that the distinctness of the orbital moment also plays a vital role in determining the magnetic moment and T-c of both phases of LaMn0.5Co0.5O3. By considering the orbital moment obtained from XMCD, the anomaly in the paramagnetic susceptibility is resolved and thus we are able to assign the valence state to Mn4+-Co2+ configuration. The difference in the magnitude of orbital moment in both phases is believed to be due to the crystal field effects.

The singularity structure of the solutions of a general third-order system, with polynomial right-hand sides of degree less than or equal to two, is studied about a movable singular point, An algorithm for transforming the given third-order system to a third-order Briot-Bouquet system is presented, The dominant behavior of a solution of the given system near a movable singularity is used to construct a transformation that changes the given system directly to a third-order Briot-Bouquet system. The results of Horn for the third-order Briot-Bouquet system are exploited to give the complete form of the series solutions of the given third-order system; convergence of these series in a deleted neighborhood of the singularity is ensured, This algorithm is used to study the singularity structure of the solutions of the Lorenz system, the Rikitake system, the three-wave interaction problem, the Rabinovich system, the Lotka-Volterra system, and the May-Leonard system for different sets of parameter values. The proposed approach goes far beyond the ARS algorithm.

A systematic assessment of the submodels of conditional moment closure (CMC) formalism for the autoignition problem is carried out using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. An initially non-premixed, n-heptane/air system, subjected to a three-dimensional, homogeneous, isotropic, and decaying turbulence, is considered. Two kinetic schemes, (1) a one-step and (2) a reduced four-step reaction mechanism, are considered for chemistry An alternative formulation is developed for closure of the mean chemical source term

We report a novel phase behavior in aqueous solutions of simple organic solutes near their liquid/liquid critical points, where a solid-like third phase appears at the liquid/liquid interface. The phenomenon has been found in three different laboratories. It appears in many aqueous systems of organic solutes and becomes enhanced upon the addition of salt to these solutions.

Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) of a wide repertoire of stable Linear Time Invariant (LTI) systems is addressed here. Even an upper bound on the order of the finite-dimensional system is unavailable. Further, the unknown plant is permitted to have both minimum phase and nonminimum phase zeros. Model following with reference to a completely specified reference model excited by a class of piecewise continuous bounded signals is the goal. The problem is approached by taking recourse to the time moments representation of an LTI system. The treatment here is confined to Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) systems. The adaptive controller is built upon an on-line scheme for time moment estimation of a system given no more than its input and output. As a first step, a cascade compensator is devised. The primary contribution lies in developing a unified framework to eventually address with more finesse the problem of adaptive control of a large family of plants allowed to be minimum or nonminimum phase. Thus, the scheme presented in this paper is confined to lay the basis for more refined compensators-cascade, feedback and both-initially for SISO systems and progressively for Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) systems. Simulations are presented.

‘Best’ solutions for the shock-structure problem are obtained by solving the Boltzmann equation for a rigid sphere gas by applying minimum error criteria on the Mott-Smith ansatz. The use of two such criteria minimizing respectively the local and total errors, as well as independent computations of the remaining error, establish the high accuracy of the solutions, although it is shown that the Mott-Smith distribution is not an exact solution of the Boltzmann equation even at infinite Mach number. The minimum local error method is found to be particularly simple and efficient. Adopting the present solutions as the standard of comparison, it is found that the widely used v2x-moment solutions can be as much as a third in error, but that results based on Rosen's method provide good approximations. Finally, it is shown that if the Maxwell mean free path on the hot side of the shock is chosen as the scaling length, the value of the density-slope shock thickness is relatively insensitive to the intermolecular potential. A comparison is made on this basis of present results with experiment, and very satisfactory quantitative agreement is obtained.

As with 1,2-diphenylethane (dpe), X-ray crystallographic methods measure the central bond in meso-3,4-diphenylhexane-2,5-done (dphd) as significantly shorter than normal for an sp(3)-sp(3) bond. The same methods measure the benzylic (ethane C-Ph) bonds in dphd as unusually long for sp(3)-sp(2) liaisons. Torsional motions of the phenyl rings about the C-Ph bonds have been proposed as the artifacts behind the result of a 'short' central bond in dpe. While a similar explanation can, presumably, hold for the even 'shorter' central bond in dphd, it cannot account for the 'long' C-Ph bonds. The phenyl groups, departing much from regular hexagonal shape, adopt highly skewed conformations with respect to the plane constituted by the four central atoms. It is thought that-the thermal motions of the phenyl rings, conditioned by the potential wells in which they are ensconced in the unit cell, are largely libratory around their normal axes. In what appears to be a straightforward explanation under the 'rigid-body' concept, it appears that these libratory motions of the phenyl rings, that account, at the same time, for the 'short' central bond, are the artifacts behind the 'long' measurement of the C-Ph bonds. These motions could be superimposed on torsional motions analogous to those proposed in the case of dpe. An inspection of the ORTEP diagram from the 298 K data on dphd clearly suggests these possibilities. Supportive evidence for these qualitative explanations from an analysis of the differences between the mean square displacements of C(1) and C(7)/C(1a) and C(7a) based on the 'rigid-body model' is discussed. Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations are solved using third order upwind biased Roe's scheme for the inviscid fluxes and second order central difference scheme for the viscous fluxes. The Baldwin & Lomax turbulence model is employed for Reynolds stresses. The governing equations are solved using finite-volume implicit scheme in body fitted curvilinear coordinate O-grid system. Computations axe reported for a flat plate apart from RAE 2822 and NACA 0012 airfoils. Results for the flat plate at M = 0.3, R-c = 4.0 x 10(6) compare favourably with the analytical solution. Results for the two airfoils are compared with experiment. There is a good agreement in C-p distribution between experiment and computation for both the airfoils. Comparison of C-f distribution with experiment for RAE 2822 airfoil is reasonable.
