Pyramidal asperities of different apical angle were machined on a flat copper surface. Hardness was estimated from the load-displacement graphs obtained by pressing a spherical rigid indenter onto the asperities. The variation of hardness with apical angle and pitch was recorded with a view to contributing to the development of a general framework for relating measured hardness to the surface roughness.

The oxidation of aqueous sulfur dioxide in the presence of polymer-supported copper(II) catalyst is also accompanied by homogeneous oxidation of aqueous sulfur dioxide catalyzed by leached copper(II) ions. Aqueous phase oxidation of sulfur dioxide of low concentrations by oxygen in the presence of dissolved copper(II) has therefore been studied. The solubility of SO2 in aqueous solutions is not affected by the concentration of copper(II) in the solution. In the oxidation reaction, only HSO3- is the reactive S(IV) species. Based on this observation a rate model which also incorporates the effect of sulfuric acid on the solubility of SO2 is developed. The rate model includes a power-law type term for the rate of homogeneous phase reaction obtained from a proposed free-radical chain mechanism for the oxidation. Experiments are conducted at various levels of concentrations of SO2 and O-2 in the gas phase and Cu(II) in the liquid phase. The observed orders are one in each of O-2, Cu(II) and HSO3-. This suggests a first-order termination of the free radicals of bisulfite ions.

Amorphous carbon-sulfur (a-C:S) composite films were prepared by vapor phase pyrolysis technique. The structural changes in the a-C:S films were investigated by electron microscopy. A powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) study depicts the two-phase nature of a sulfur-incorporated a-C system. The optical bandgap energy shows a decreasing trend with an increase in the sulfur content and preparation temperature. This infers a sulfur incorporation and pyrolysis temperature induced reduction in structural disorder or increase in sp (2) or pi-sites. The presence of sulfur (S 2p) in the a-C:S sample is analyzed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The sp (3)/sp (2) hybridization ratio is determined by using the XPS C 1s peak fitting, and the results confirm an increase in sp (2) hybrids with sulfur addition to a-C. The electrical resistivity variation in the films depends on both the sulfur concentration and the pyrolysis temperature.

In order to explore the anticancer effect associated with the thiazolidinone framework, several 2-(5-((5-(4-chlorophenyl)furan-2-yl)methylene)-4-oxo-2-thioxothiazolidin-3-yl)acetic acid derivatives 5(a-1) were synthesized. Variation in the functional group at C-terminal of the thiazolidinone led to set of compounds bearing amide moiety. Their chemical structures were confirmed by H-1 NMR, IR and Mass Spectra analysis. These thiazolidinone compounds containing furan moiety exhibits moderate to strong antiproliferative activity in a cell cycle stage-dependent and dose dependent manner in two different human leukemia cell lines. The importance of the electron donating groups on thiazolidinone moiety was confirmed by MTT and Trypan blue assays and it was concluded that the 4th position of the substituted aryl ring plays a dominant role for its anticancer property. Among the synthesized compounds, 5e and 5f have shown potent anticancer activity on both the cell lines tested. To rationalize the role of electron donating group in the induction of cytotoxicity we have chosen two molecules (5e and 5k) having different electron donating group at different positions. LDH assay, Flow cytometric analysis and DNA fragmentation suggest that 5e is more cytotoxic and able to induce the apoptosis. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A time-dependent quantum mechanical (TDQM) method of wavepacket propagation in computing resonance Raman intensities for polyatomic systems, has been developed and demonstrated by applying it tocis-stilbene andtrans-azobenzene. In the case of the former, Raman excitation profiles (REPs) for the various vibrational modes have also been computed. It is observed that the calculated absorption spectrum and the REPs compare very well with the experimental results. A comparison of these results with those of the often semiclassical approach reveals that the TDQM method can be used to study polyatomic systems with as much ease as the semiclassical wavepacket method.

Interaction of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) with few-layer graphene samples prepared by the exfoliation of graphite oxide (EG), conversion of nanodiamond (DG) and arc-evaporation of graphite in hydrogen (HG) has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy to understand the role of the graphene surface. The position and full-width at half maximum of the Raman G-band are affected on interaction with TTF and TCNE and the effect is highest with EG and least with HG. The effect of TTF and TCNE on the 2D-band is also maximum with EG. The magnitude of interaction between the donor/acceptor molecules varies in the same order as the surface areas of the graphenes. The hydrothermal reaction of Ln(NO3)(3), Ni(NO3)(2), NaN3, and isonicotinic acid (L) yielded two novel 3-D coordination frameworks (1 and 2) of general formula [Ni(2)Ln(L)(5)(N-3)(2)(H2O)(3)] center dot 2H(2)O (Ln = Pr(III) for 1 and Nd(III) for 2), containing Ni-Pr or Ni-Nd hybrid extended three-dimensional networks containing both azido and carboxylate as co-ligands. Both the compounds are found to be isostructural and crystallize in monoclinic system having P2(1)/n space group. Here the lanthanide ions are found to be nonacoordinated. Both bidentate and monodentate modes of binding of the carboxylate with the lanthanides have been observed in the above complexes. Variable temperature magnetic studies of the above two complexes have been investigated in the temperature range 2-300 K which showed dominant antiferromagnetic interaction in both the cases and these experimental results are analyzed with the theoretical models. In order to investigate the factors determining the relative stabilities of layered perovskite and pyrochlore structures of transition metal oxides containing trivalent bismuth, several ternary and quaternary oxides have been investigated. While d0 cations stabilize the layered perovskite structure, cations containing partially-filled d orbitals (which suppress ferroelectric distortion of MO6 octahedra) seem to favor pyrochlore-related structures. Thus, the vanadium analogue of the layered perovskite Bi4Ti3O12 cannot be prepared; instead the composition consists of a mixture of pyrochlore-type Bi1.33V2O6, Bi2O3, and Bi metal. The distortion of Bi1.33V2O6 to orthorhombic symmetry is probably due to an ordering of anion vacancies in the pyrochlore structure. None of the other pyrochlores investigated, Bi2NbCrO7, Bi2NbFeO7, TlBiM2O7 (M = Nb, Ta), shows evidence for cation ordering in the X-Ray diffraction patterns, as indeed established by structure refinement of TlBiNb2O7.

An A-DNA type double helical conformation was observed in the single crystal X-ray structure of the octamer d(G-G-T-A-T-A-C-C), 1, and its 5-bromouracil-containing analogue, 2. The structure of the isomorphous crystals (space group P61) was solved by a search technique based on packing criteria and R-factor calculations, with use of only low order data. At the present stage of refinement the R factors are 31 % for 1 and 28 % for 2 at a resolution of 2.25 A (0.225 nm). The molecules interact through their minor grooves by hydrogen bonding and base to sugar van der Waals contacts. The stable A conformation observed in the crystal may have some structural relevance to promoter regions where the T-A-T-A sequence is frequently found.

From the proton NMR spectra of Nfl-dimethyluracil oriented in two different nematic solvents, the internal rotation of the methyl groups about the N-C bonds is studied. It has been observed that the preferred conformation of the methyl group having one carbonyl in the vicinity is the one where a C-H bond is in the ring plane pointing toward the carbonyl group. The results are not sensitive to the mode of rotation of the other methyl group. These data are interpreted in terms of the bond polarizations.

COOH-terminated polybutadiene has been converted into COCl-terminated polybutadiene which was further chemically cross-linked with bisphenol-A and tetrabromobisphenol-A. The flammability characteristics of bisphenol-A and tetrabromobisphenol-A resins have been examined using thermogravimetric, ignition temperature and mass burning rate data. Mass burning rate results support that tetrabromobisphenol-A cross-linked polybutadiene is flame retardant compared to the corresponding non brominated compositions.

The presence of folded solution conformations in the peptides Boc-Ala-(Aib-Ala)2-OMe, Boc-Val-(Aib-Val) 2-OMe, Boc-Ala-(Aib-Ala)3-OMe and Boc-Val-(Aib-Val)3-OMe has been established by 270MHz 1H NMR. Intramolecularly H-bonded NH groups have been identified using temperature and solvent dependence of NH chemical shifts and paramagnetic radical induced broadening of NH resonances. Both pentapeptides adopt 310 helical conformations possessing 3 intramolecular H-bonds in CDCl3 and (CD3)2SO. The heptapeptides favour helical structures with 5 H-bonds in CDCl3. In (CD3)2SO only 4 H-bonds are readily detected.

The conformational analysis of the synthetic peptide Boc-Cys-Pro-Val-Cys-NHMe has been carried out, as a model for small disulfide loops, in biologically active polypeptides. 'H NMR studies (270 MHz) establish that the Val(3) and Cys(4) NH groups are solvent shielded, while 13C studies establish an all-trans peptide backbone. Circular dichroism and Raman spectroscopy provide evidence for a right-handed twist of the disulfide bond. Analysis of the vicinal (JaB)c oupling constants for the two Cys residues establishes that XI - *60° for Cys(4), while some flexibility is suggested at Cys( 1). Conformational energy calculations, imposing intramolecular hydrogen bonding constraints, favor a P-turn (type I) structure with Pro(2)-Va1(3) as the corner residues. Theoretical and spectroscopic results are consistent with the presence of a transannular 4 - 1 hydrogen bond between Cys( 1) CO and Cys(4) NH groups, with the Val NH being sterically shielded from the solvent environment.
