Abrasion and slurry erosion behaviour of chromium-manganese iron samples with chromium (Cr) in the range similar to 16-19% and manganese (Mn) at 5 and 10% levels have been characterized for hardness followed by microstructural examination using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Positron lifetime studies have been conducted to understand the defects/microporosity influence on the microstructure. The samples were heat treated and characterized to understand the structural transformations in the matrix. The data reveals that hardness decreased with increase in Mn content from 5 to 10% in the first instance and then increase in the section size in the other case, irrespective of the sample conditions. The abrasion and slurry erosion losses show increase with increase in the section size as well as with increase in Mn content. The positron results show that as hardness increases from as-cast to heat treated sample, the positron trapping rate and hence defect concentration showed opposite trend as expected. So a good correlation between defects concentration and the hardness has been observed. These findings also corroborate well with the microstructural features obtained from optical and scanning electron microscopy. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Acoustic emission (AE) energy, instead of amplitude, associated with each of the event is used to estimate the fracture process zone (FPZ) size. A steep increase in the cumulative AE energy of the events with respect to time is correlated with the formation of FPZ. Based on the AE energy released during these events and the locations of the events, FPZ size is obtained. The size-independent fracture energy is computed using the expressions given in the boundary effect model by least squares method since over-determined system of equations are obtained when data from several specimens are used. Instead of least squares method a different method is suggested in which the transition ligament length, measured from the plot of histograms of AE events plotted over the un-cracked ligament, is used directly to obtain size-independent fracture energy. The fracture energy thus calculated seems to be size-independent.

The quantity of fruit consumed by dispersers is highly variable among individuals within plant populations. The outcome Of Such selection operated by firugivores has been examined mostly with respect to changing spatial contexts. The influence of varying temporal contexts on frugivore choice, and their possible demographic and evolutionary consequences is poorly understood. We examined if temporal variation in fruit availability across a hierarchy of nested temporal levels (interannual, intraseasonal, 120 h, 24 h) altered frugivore choice for a complex seed dispersal system in dry tropical forests of southern India. The interactions between Phyllanthus emblica and its primary disperser (ruminants) was mediated by another frugivore (a primate),which made large quantities of fruit available on the ground to ruminants. The direction and strength of crop size and neighborhood effects on this interaction varied with changing temporal contexts.Fruit availability was higher in the first of the two study years, and at the start of the season in both years. Fruit persistence on trees, determined by primate foraging, was influenced by crop size andconspecific neighborhood densities only in the high fruit availability year. Fruit removal by ruminants was influenced by crop size in both years and neighborhood densities only in the high availability year. In both years, these effects were stronger at the start of the season.Intraseasonal reduction in fruit availability diminished inequalities in fruit removal by ruminants and the influence of crop size and fruiting neighborhoods. All trees were not equally attractive to frugivores in a P. emblica population at all points of time. Temporal asymmetry in frugivore-mediated selection could reduce potential for co-evolution between firugivores and plants by diluting selective pressures. Inter-dependencies; formed between disparate animal consumers can add additional levels of complexity to plant-frugivore mutualistic networks and have potential reproductive consequences for specific individuals within populations.

Here we report on the magnetic properties of iron carbide nanoparticles embedded in a carbon matrix. Granular distributions of nanoparticles in an inert matrix, of potential use in various applications, were prepared by pyrolysis of organic precursors using the thermally assisted chemical vapour deposition method. By varying the precursor concentration and preparation temperature, compositions with varying iron concentration and nanoparticle sizes were made. Powder x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and Mossbauer spectroscopy studies revealed the nanocrystalline iron carbide (Fe3C) presence in the partially graphitized matrix. The dependence of the magnetic properties on the particle size and temperature (10 K < T < 300 K) were studied using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. Based on the affect of surrounding carbon spins, the observed magnetic behaviour of the nanoparticle compositions, such as the temperature dependence of magnetization and coercivity, can be explained.

Calcium sulphate (CaSO4) pseudomicrorods have been synthesized by alow-temperature hydrothermal method using CaSO4 powder as a precursor and hexadecylamine as a surfactant at 180 degrees C for at different intervals of time. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern indicates that the as-formed pseudomicrorods are of orthorhombic phase with lattice parameters a = 7.0023(4) angstrom, b = 6.9939(5) angstrom and c = 6.2434(4) angstrom. Scanning electron microscopy images show that the pseudomicrorods have diameters of about 0.2-2.5 mm and lengths of about 2-10 mm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy shows a strong doublet near 609 and 681 cm(-1) arising from nu(4) (SO42) bending vibrations. The strongest band observed at 1132 cm(-1) is associated with nu(3) (SO42-) stretching vibrations. The band near 420-450 cm(-1) is attributed to nu(2) (SO42-) bending vibrations. The Raman spectrum exhibits an intense peak at 1008 cm(-1) associated with the SO42- mode. The photoluminescence spectrum exhibits UV bands (330, 350 nm), strong green bands (402, 436 nm) and weak blue bands (503 nm). A widening of the optical band gap was observed as the particle size decreased.

When a high velocity gas jet is introduced into a packed bed a cavity is formed. The size of the cavity shows hysteresis on increasing and decreasing gas flow rates. This hysteresis leads to different cavity sizes at same gas flow rate depending on the bed history. The size of cavity affects the gas flow profiles in the packed bed. In this study the cavity size hysteresis phenomenon has been modeled using discrete element method along with turbulent gas flow. A reasonable agreement has been found between computed and experimental results on cavity size ysteresis. The effect of various parameters, such as nozzle height from the bed bottom and packing height, on the cavity size hysteresis has been studied. It is found that inter-particle interaction forces along with gas drag and bed porosity play an important role in describing the cavity size hysteresis. The injection of gas flow allows the particles to go to an unconstrained state than they were previously in, and their ability to remain in that state, even under decreased gas drag force, leads to the phenomenon of cavity size hysteresis. The transient response spectrum of a cubic spring mass system subjected to a step function input is obtained. An approximate method is adopted where non-linear restoring force characteristic is replaced by two linear segments, so that the mean square error between them is a minimum. The effect of viscous damping on the peak response is also discussed for various values of the damping constant and the non-linearity restoring force parameter.

We discover that hexagonal holmium copper titanate (Ho2CuTiO6), has a unique and highly desirable combination of high dielectric constant, low losses, very small temperature coefficient, and low frequency dependence. Our first-principles calculations indicate that these exceptional properties result from a size-difference at the Cu/Ti B-site that suppresses the expected ferroelectric transition, combined with the dominance of intermediate-frequency polar vibrational modes in the dielectric response. Our results suggest that the use of such B-site disorder in alloys of hexagonal transition-metal oxides should generally result in similar robust dielectrics.

Dielectric observations on lithium hydrazinium sulphate have shown earlier that it is ferroelectric over a range of temperatures from below −15° C. to above 80° C. and a new type of hydrogen bond rearrangement which would allow the protons to migrate along the chain has also been suggested by others. The infrared spectrum of LiH z S in the form of mull and as single crystal sections parallel and perpendicular to the ‘C’ axis exhibit about 21 well-defined absorption maxima. The position and the width of the maxima agree with the known structure of the crystal according to which the hydrazine group exists in the form of the hydrazinium ion, NH2·NH3+ and the observed N+-H frequencies agree better with the new correlation curve given by R. S. Krishnan and K. Krishnan (1964). However it has been pointed out that from a comparative study of the new infrared spectra of hydrazonium sulphate and lithium ammonium sulphate that the absorption band at 969 cm.−1 is due to N-N stretching vibration and that the fairly intense band between 2050–2170 cm.−1 is due to the bending vibrations of the NH3+ group.

The Raman spectrum of DMSO is recorded with a Hilger two-prism spectrograph andλ 4358 Å excitation. In addition to all the Raman lines reported earlier, six new lines at 898, 925, 1223, 1309, 2811 and 2871 cm.−1 are observed and tentative assignments are given. The influence of solvents (CCl4, CHCl3, CH3COOH) on the S=O bond is also studied. A shift from the liquid phase value,i.e., 1043 cm.−1 to 1054, 1052 and 1009 cm.−1 in the respective solvents is observed. The possibilities of association effects and hydrogen bonding are discussed.

Raman spectra of cyclohexane 1,4-dione (I), in chloroform, benzene and water solutions have been recorded. Temperature effect on the spectrum has been studied. The IR spectra of I and its octadeutero analogue in the solid state have also been studied. The spectra have been found on the basis of selection rules applicable for Raman and IR spectra, to be consistent with a single conformer of C2 symmetry. Plausible causes of conformational preference have been discussed.

Raman spectrum of rubidium iodide has been recorded for the first time using the resonance radiation of mercury (λ 2537 ) as the exciter. The frequencies of the 24p limiting modes (p = 2, the number of non-equivalent atoms in the unit cell), postulated by Raman in 1943, which correspond to the frequencies from the critical points Γ, L and X, have been worked out using the shell model of Cochran, taking into account the nearest and the next-nearest neighbour short-range interactions and the polarization of both the ions. The observed Raman lines have been assigned to the overtones and the combinations of the phonon branches from Γ, L and X.

The Raman spectrum of a single crystal of sulphamic acid has been recorded withλ 2537 excitation. Thirty-eight lines have been observed, of which twenty-nine have been recorded for the first time. Seven Raman lines with shifts in the region 50–155 cm.−1 have been assigned to the lattice oscillations, two at 177 and 240 cm.−1 have been attributed to the low-frequency hydrogen bond vibrations.. The splitting of the degenerate modes and the appearance of N-H....O bonded stretching vibrations are consistent with the structural data which expect the presence of the free molecule as a Zwitter ion with only slight distortion from C3v symmetry.

The Raman spectrum of a single crystal of cadmium acetate dihydrate has been recorded for the first time using λ 2537 excitation. Twenty-three lines have been observed out of which ten have been attributed to the internal oscillations of the acetate ion, nine to the lattice modes, two to low-frequency hydrogen bond vibrations. A line at 308 cm.−1 and the continuum 3250–3560 cm.−1 have been assigned to the Cd-O6 and internal vibrations of the water molecules.
