Scaling laws are represented in power law form and can be utilized to extract the characteristic properties of a new phenomenon with the help of self-similar solutions. In this work, an attempt has been made to propose a scaling law analytically, for plain concrete when subjected to variable amplitude loading. Due to the application of overload on concrete structures, acceleration in the crack growth process takes place. A closed form expression has been developed to capture the acceleration in crack growth rate in conjunction with the principles of dimensional analysis and self-similarity. The proposed model accounts for parameters such as, the tensile strength, fracture toughness, overload effect and the structural size. Knowing the governed and the governing parameters of the physical problem and by using the concepts of self-similarity, a relationship is obtained between the different parameters involved. The predicted results are compared with experimental crack growth data for variable amplitude loading and are found to capture the overload effect with sufficient accuracy. Through a sensitivity analysis, fracture toughness is found to be the most dominant parameter in accelerating the crack length due to application of overload.

The acoustic emission technique is used for monitoring the fatigue crack growth in plain concrete beams under three-point loading. Variable amplitude loading with step-wise increase in the maximum load is applied. The fatigue crack growth is continuously monitored using six acoustic sensors. The results of load, displacement, crack mouth opening displacement, acoustic events, and acoustic energy are simultaneously acquired during the test. It is seen that a Paris law type of relationship exists between the rate of increase of acoustic emission count per cycle and the stress intensity factor range. Using b-value analysis, different stages of fatigue fracture is explained. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of different pre-aging treatments on the microstructural evolution of lead-free solder and growth of interfacial intermetallic compound layers under thermal cycling has been investigated in this work. The results show that there are distinct differences in the microstructural changes between samples with no pretreatment, samples that have experienced thermal annealing at 125A degrees C for 750 h before thermal cycling, and those that have had direct current (DC) stressing for 750 h as pretreatment. The microstructural evolution of the solder matrix is rationalized by utilizing the science of microstructures and analysis of the influence of electron flow on the precipitation phenomena. The finite-element method is utilized to understand the loading conditions imposed on the solder interconnections during cyclic stressing. The growth of intermetallic reaction layers is further analyzed by utilizing quantitative thermodynamic calculations coupled with kinetic analysis. The latter is based on the changes in the intrinsic diffusion fluxes of elements induced by current flow and alloying elements present in the system. With this concurrent approach the differences seen in thermal cycling behavior between the different pre-aging treatments can be explained.

In this work, an attempt has been made to assess the fatigue life of reinforced concrete beams, by proposing a crack propagation law which accounts for parameters such as fracture toughness, crack length, loading ratio and structural size. A numerical procedure is developed to compute fatigue life of RC beams. The predicted results are compared with the available experimental data in the literature and seen to agree reasonably well. Further, in order to assess the remaining life of an RC member, the moment carrying capacity is determined as a function of crack extension, based on the crack tip opening displacement and residual strength of the member is computed at an event of unstable fracture.

This paper presents the details of crack growth study and remaining life assessment of concrete specimens made up of high strength concrete (HSC, HSC1) and ultra high strength concrete (UHSC). Flexural fatigue tests have been conducted on HSC, HSC1 and UHSC beams under constant amplitude loading with a stress ratio of 0.2. It is observed from the studies that (i) the failure patterns of HSC1 and UHSC beams indicate their ductility as the member was intact till the crack propagated up to 90% of the beam depth and (ii) the remaining life decreases with increase of notch depth (iii) the failure of the specimen is influenced by the frequency of loading. A ``Net K'' model has been proposed by using non-linear fracture mechanics principles for crack growth analysis and remaining life prediction. SIF (K) has been computed by using the principle of superposition. SIP due to the cohesive forces applied on the effective crack face inside the process zone has been obtained through Green's function approach by applying bi-linear tension softening relationship to consider the cohesive the stresses acting ahead of the crack tip. Remaining life values have been have been predicted and compared with the corresponding experimental values and observed that they are in good agreement with each other.

This paper presents experimental and analytical studies on fatigue crack propagation in concrete-concrete cold jointed interface specimens. Beams of different sizes having jointed interface between two concretes with different elastic properties are tested under fatigue loading. The acoustic emission technique is used for monitoring the fatigue crack growth. It is observed that the interface having a higher moduli mismatch tends to behave in a brittle manner. The CMOD compliances at different loading cycles are measured and the equivalent crack lengths are determined from a finite element analysis. An analytical model for crack growth rate is proposed using the concepts of the dimensional analysis. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Low cycle fatigue behavior of an O+B2 alloy was evaluated at 650 degrees C in ambient atmosphere under fully reversed total axial strain controlled mode. Three different microstructures, namely equiaxed O plus aged B2 (fine O plates in B2 matrix), lenticular O laths plus aged B2 and a pancake composite microstructure comprising equiaxed alpha 2, lenticular O and aged B2, were selected to study the effect of microstructure on low cycle fatigue behavior in this class of alloys. Distinct well-defined trends were observed in the cyclic stress-strain response curves depending on the microstructure. The cyclic stress response was examined in terms of softening or hardening and correlated with microstructural features and dislocation behavior. Fatigue life was analyzed in terms of standard Coffin-Manson and Basquin plots and for all microstructures a prevailing elastic strain regime was identified, with a single slope for microstructures equiaxed and composite and a double slope for lenticular O laths. In this study, mesoporous silica-cyclic olefin copolymer nanocomposite films were fabricated by solution casting. With an increase in silica loading, the stiffness of the matrix increased. The nanocomposite film shows increased strain to failure with moisture after aging by matrix plasticization. The storage modulus and loss factor for samples with silica content show better results compared with pristine polymer, as indicated by dynamic mechanical analysis. The interaction between filler-polymer chain exhibit hydrophobicity compared to the neat polymer. Water absorption studies at room temperature and near the T-g of the polymer (similar to 64 degrees C) were carried out. The nanocomposites up to 4 wt% filler reduces the water diffusion by forming hydrogen and chemical bonding. The result by calcium degradation test method for moisture permeability and Schottky structured organic device encapsulation under weathering condition confirms the effective reinforcement effect of silica particles in the matrix. Prognosis regarding durability of composite structures using various Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques is an important and challenging topic of research. Ultrasonic SHM systems with embedded transducers have potential application here due to their instant monitoring capability, compact packaging potential toward unobtrusiveness and non-invasiveness as compared to non-contact ultrasonic and eddy current techniques which require disassembly of the structure. However, embedded sensors pose a risk to the structure by acting as a flaw thereby reducing life. The present paper focuses on the determination of strength and fatigue life of the composite laminate with embedded film sensors like CNT nanocomposite, PVDF thin films and piezoceramic films. First, the techniques of embedding these sensors in composite laminates is described followed by the determination of static strength and fatigue life at coupon level testing in Universal Testing Machine (UTM). Failure mechanisms of the composite laminate with embedded sensors are studied for static and dynamic loading cases. The coupons are monitored for loading and failure using the embedded sensors. A comparison of the performance of these three types of embedded sensors is made to study their suitability in various applications. These three types of embedded sensors cover a wide variety of applications, and prove to be viable in embedded sensor based SHM of composite structures.

In the present study, amino-silane modified layered organosilicates were used to reinforce cyclic olefin copolymer to enhance the thermal, mechanical and moisture impermeable barrier properties. The optimum clay loading (4%) in the nanocomposite increases the thermal stability of the film while further loading decreases film stability. Water absorption behavior at 62 degrees C was carried out and compared with the behavior at room temperature and 48 degrees C. The stiffness of the matrix increases with clay content and the recorded strain to failure for the composite films was lower than the neat film. Dynamic mechanical analysis show higher storage modulus and low loss modulus for 2.5-4 wt% clay loading. Calcium degradation test and device encapsulation also show the evidence of optimum clay loading of 4 wt% for improved low water vapor transmission rates compared to other nanocomposite films. A closed-form expression for the dual of dissipation potential is derived within the framework of irreversible thermodynamics using the principles of dimensional analysis and self-similarity. Through this potential, a damage evolution law is proposed for concrete under fatigue loading using the concepts of damage mechanics in conjunction with fracture mechanics. The proposed law is used to compute damage in a volume element when a member is subjected to fatigue loading. The evolution of damage from microcracking to macrocracking of the entire member is captured through a series of volume elements failing one after the other. The number of loading cycles to failure of the member is obtained as the summation of number of cycles to failure for each individual volume element. A parametric study is conducted to determine the effect of the size of the volume element on the model's prediction of fatigue life. A global damage index is also defined, and the residual moment carrying capacity of damaged beams is evaluated. Through a deterministic sensitivity analysis, it is found that the load range and maximum aggregate size are the most influencing parameters on the fatigue life of a plain concrete beam.

Fretting is of a serious concern in many industrial components, specifically, in nuclear industry for the safe and reliable operation of various component and/or system. Under fretting condition small amplitude oscillations induce surface degradation in the form of surface cracks and/or surface wear. Comprehensive experimental studies have been carried out simulating different fretting regimes under ambient and vacuum (10(-9) MPa) conditions and, temperature up to 400 degrees C. Studies have been carried out with stainless steel spheres on stainless steel flats, and stainless steel spheres against chromium carbide, with 25% nickel chrome binder coatings. Mechanical responses are correlated with the damage observed. It has been observed that adhesion plays a vital role in material degradation process, and its effectiveness depends on mechanical variables such as normal load, interfacial tangential displacement, characteristics of the contacting bodies and most importantly on the environment conditions. Material degradation mechanism for ductile materials involved severe plastic deformation, which results in the initiation or nucleation of cracks. Ratcheting has been observed as the governing damage mode for crack nucleation under cyclic tangential loading condition. Further, propagation of the cracks has been observed under fatigue and their orientation has been observed to be governed by the contact conditions prevailing at the contact interface. Coated surfaces show damage in the form of brittle fracture and spalling of the coatings. Existence of stick slip has been observed under high normal load and low displacement amplitude. It has also been observed that adhesion at the contact interface and instantaneous cohesive strength of the contacting bodies dictates the occurrence of material transfer. The paper discusses the mechanics and mechanisms involved in fretting damage under controlled environment conditions. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An energy approach within the framework of thermodynamics is used to model the fatigue process in plain concrete. Fatigue crack growth is an irreversible process associated with an irreversible entropy gain. A closed-form expression for entropy generated during fatigue in terms of energy dissipated is derived using principles of dimensional analysis and self-similarity. An increase in compliance is considered as a measure of damage accumulated during fatigue. The entropy at final fatigue failure is shown to be independent of loading and geometry and is proposed as a material property. A relationship between energy dissipated and number of cycles of fatigue loading is obtained. (C) 2015 American Society of Civil Engineers.

A new automatic algorithm for the assessment of mixed mode crack growth rate characteristics is presented based on the concept of an equivalent crack. The residual ligament size approach is introduced to implementation this algorithm for identifying the crack tip position on a curved path with respect to the drop potential signal. The automatic algorithm accounting for the curvilinear crack trajectory and employing an electrical potential difference was calibrated with respect to the optical measurements for the growing crack under cyclic mixed mode loading conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is confirmed by fatigue tests performed on ST3 steel compact tension-shear specimens in the full range of mode mixities from pure mode Ito pure mode II. Five stereochemically constrained analogs of the chemotactic tripeptide incorporating 1-aminocycloalkane-1-carboxylic acid (Ac(n)c) and alpha,alpha-dialkylglycines (Deg, diethylglycine; Dpg, n,n-dipropylglycine and Dbg, n,n-dibutylglycine) at position 2 have been synthesized. NMR studies of peptides For-Met-Xxx-Phe-OMe (Xxx = Ac(7)c, I; Ac(8)c, II; Deg, III; Dpg, IV and Dbg, V; For, formyl) establish that peptides with cycloalkyl residues, I and II, adopt folded beta-turn conformations in CDCl3 and (CD3)(2)SO. In contrast, analogs with linear alkyl sidechains, III-V, favour fully extended (C-5) conformations in solution. Peptides I-V exhibit high activity in inducing beta-glucosaminidase release from rabbit neutrophils, with ED(50) values ranging from 1.4-8.0 x 10(-11)M. In human neutrophils the Dxg peptides III-V have ED(50) values ranging from 2.3 x 10(-8) to 5.9 x 10(-10) M, with the activity order being V > IV > III. While peptides I-IV are less active than the parent. For-Met-Leu-Phe-OH, in stimulating histamine release from human basophils, the Dbg peptide V is appreciably more potent, suggesting its potential utility as a probe for formyl peptide receptors.
