An experimental study aimed at understanding the deformational behavior of conventionally reinforced steel fiber concrete beams in pure bending is reported in this paper. One group of beams has steel fibers dispersed in the entire volume of the beam and the second has fibers dispersed over half the depth of the beam on the tension side. A comparative study of the deformational characteristics of these beams has been made. Half-depth fiber inclusion, requiring only half the quantity of fibers of full-depth inclusion, is found to be equally effective in improving the deformational behavior of beams. Thus, by such modes of inclusion of fibers, an economical and efficient use of expensive steel fibers can be realized.

The Asian elephant's foraging strategy in its natural habitat and in cultivation was studied in southern India during 1981-83. Though elephants consumed at least 112 plant species in the study area, about 85% of their diet consisted of only 25 species from the order Malvales and the families Leguminosae, Palmae, Cyperaceae and Gramineae. Alteration between a predominantly browse diet during the dry season with a grass diet during the early wet season was related to the seasonally changing protein content of grasses. Crop raiding, which was sporadic during the dry season, gradually increased with more area being cultivated with the onset of rains. Raiding frequency reached a peak during October-December, with some villages being raided almost every night, when finger millet (Eleusine coracana) was cultivated by most farmers. The monthly frequency of raiding was related to the seasonal movement of elephant herds and to the size of the enclave. Of their total annual food requirement, adult bull elephants derived an estimated 9.3% and family herds 1.7% in quantity from cultivated land. Cultivated cereal and millet crops provided significantly more protein, calcium and sodium than the wild grasses. Ultimately, crop raiding can be thought of as an extension of the elephant's optimal foraging strategy.

Depletion of calcium in the extracellular medium used to incubate first trimester human placental minces resulted in a significant decrease in the quantity of immuno-reactive hCG in the medium and a corresponding increase in the tissue. In contrast, when secretion of newly synthesised hCG was monitored in the absence of calcium by using a radioactive amino acid precursor, a significant increase in the secretion of newly synthesised hCG in the medium was noticed. This was true of secretion of other proteins also as evidenced by the increase in the trichloroacetic acid precipitable radioactivity in the medium in the absence of calcium. These results suggest that newly synthesised hCG is preferentially released over stored hormone in the absence of calcium.

We study large-scale kinematic dynamo action due to turbulence in the presence of a linear shear flow in the low-conductivity limit. Our treatment is non-perturbative in the shear strength and makes systematic use of both the shearing coordinate transformation and the Galilean invariance of the linear shear flow. The velocity fluctuations are assumed to have low magnetic Reynolds number (Re-m), but could have arbitrary fluid Reynolds number. The equation for the magnetic fluctuations is expanded perturbatively in the small quantity, Re-m. Our principal results are as follows: (i) the magnetic fluctuations are determined to the lowest order in Rem by explicit calculation of the resistive Green's function for the linear shear flow; (ii) the mean electromotive force is then calculated and an integro-differential equation is derived for the time evolution of the mean magnetic field. In this equation, velocity fluctuations contribute to two different kinds of terms, the 'C' and 'D' terms, respectively, in which first and second spatial derivatives of the mean magnetic field, respectively, appear inside the space-time integrals; (iii) the contribution of the D term is such that its contribution to the time evolution of the cross-shear components of the mean field does not depend on any other components except itself. Therefore, to the lowest order in Re-m, but to all orders in the shear strength, the D term cannot give rise to a shear-current-assisted dynamo effect; (iv) casting the integro-differential equation in Fourier space, we show that the normal modes of the theory are a set of shearing waves, labelled by their sheared wavevectors; (v) the integral kernels are expressed in terms of the velocity-spectrum tensor, which is the fundamental dynamical quantity that needs to be specified to complete the integro-differential equation description of the time evolution of the mean magnetic field; (vi) the C term couples different components of the mean magnetic field, so they can, in principle, give rise to a shear-current-type effect. We discuss the application to a slowly varying magnetic field, where it can be shown that forced non-helical velocity dynamics at low fluid Reynolds number does not result in a shear-current-assisted dynamo effect.

We re-examine holographic versions of the c-theorem and entanglement entropy in the context of higher curvature gravity and the AdS/CFT correspondence. We select the gravity theories by tuning the gravitational couplings to eliminate non-unitary operators in the boundary theory and demonstrate that all of these theories obey a holographic c-theorem. In cases where the dual CFT is even-dimensional, we show that the quantity that flow is the central charge associated with the A-type trace anomaly. Here, unlike in conventional holographic constructions with Einstein gravity, we are able to distinguish this quantity from other central charges or the leading coefficient in the entropy density of a thermal bath. In general, we are also able to identify this quantity with the coefficient of a universal contribution to the entanglement entropy in a particular construction. Our results suggest that these coefficients appearing in entanglement entropy play the role of central charges in odd-dimensional CFT's. We conjecture a new c-theorem on the space of odd-dimensional field theories, which extends Cardy's proposal for even dimensions. Beyond holography, we were able to show that for any even-dimensional CFT, the universal coefficient appearing the entanglement entropy which we calculate is precisely the A-type central charge.

Here we rederive the hierarchy of equations for the evolution of distribution functions of various orders using a convenient parameterization. We use this to obtain equations for two- and three-point correlation functions in powers of a small parameter, viz., the initial density contrast. The correspondence of the lowest order solutions of these equations to the results from the linear theory of density perturbations is shown for an OMEGA = 1 universe. These equations are then used to calculate, to the lowest order, the induced three-point correlation function that arises from Gaussian initial conditions in an OMEGA = 1 universe. We obtain an expression which explicitly exhibits the spatial structure of the induced three-point correlation function. It is seen that the spatial structure of this quantity is independent of the value of OMEGA. We also calculate the triplet momentum. We find that the induced three-point correlation function does not have the ''hierarchical'' form often assumed. We discuss possibilities of using the induced three-point correlation to interpret observational data. The formalism developed here can also be used to test a validity of different schemes to close the

Supercapacitor properties of MnO2 are studied generally in aqueous alkali metal salt solutions, often in a Na salt solution. During electrochemical discharge-charge processes, Na+ ions from the electrolyte get reversibly inserted/deinserted on the surface of MnO2 particles, which leads to redox reaction between MnOONa and MnO2. In the present study, it has been shown that MnO2 exhibits enhanced capacitance behaviour in a rare earth metal salt solution, namely, La(NO3)(3) solution in comparison with NaNO3 and Mg(NO3)(2) aqueous solutions. The specific capacitance increases with an increase in charge on the solution cation (Na+, Mg2+ and La3+). It is proposed that the number of surface sites for adsorption of cations remains unaltered in all solutions. The surface insertion of cation facilitates the reduction of Mn4+ in MnO2 to Mn3+ equivalent to the charge present on the cation. As the specific capacitance is related to the quantity of charge that is exchanged between the solid MnO2 and the aqueous solution, the trivalent cation (La3+) provides greater specific capacitance than in Mg(NO3)(2) and NaNO3 electrolytes. Accordingly, the number of Mn(IV)/Mn(III) redox pairs involved in the neighbourhood of the adsorption site is one, two and three when Na+, Mg2+ and La3+ ions, respectively, are adsorbed. The problem of estimating the time-dependent statistical characteristics of a random dynamical system is studied under two different settings. In the first, the system dynamics is governed by a differential equation parameterized by a random parameter, while in the second, this is governed by a differential equation with an underlying parameter sequence characterized by a continuous time Markov chain. We propose, for the first time in the literature, stochastic approximation algorithms for estimating various time-dependent process characteristics of the system. In particular, we provide efficient estimators for quantities such as the mean, variance and distribution of the process at any given time as well as the joint distribution and the autocorrelation coefficient at different times. A novel aspect of our approach is that we assume that information on the parameter model (i.e., its distribution in the first case and transition probabilities of the Markov chain in the second) is not available in either case. This is unlike most other work in the literature that assumes availability of such information. Also, most of the prior work in the literature is geared towards analyzing the steady-state system behavior of the random dynamical system while our focus is on analyzing the time-dependent statistical characteristics which are in general difficult to obtain. We prove the almost sure convergence of our stochastic approximation scheme in each case to the true value of the quantity being estimated. We provide a general class of strongly consistent estimators for the aforementioned statistical quantities with regular sample average estimators being a specific instance of these. We also present an application of the proposed scheme on a widely used model in population biology. Numerical experiments in this framework show that the time-dependent process characteristics as obtained using our algorithm in each case exhibit excellent agreement with exact results. Interest in the applicability of fluctuation theorems to the thermodynamics of single molecules in external potentials has recently led to calculations of the work and total entropy distributions of Brownian oscillators in static and time-dependent electromagnetic fields. These calculations, which are based on solutions to a Smoluchowski equation, are not easily extended to a consideration of the other thermodynamic quantity of interest in such systems-the heat exchanges of the particle alone-because of the nonlinear dependence of the heat on a particle's stochastic trajectory. In this paper, we show that a path integral approach provides an exact expression for the distribution of the heat fluctuations of a charged Brownian oscillator in a static magnetic field. This approach is an extension of a similar path integral approach applied earlier by our group to the calculation of the heat distribution function of a trapped Brownian particle, which was found, in the limit of long times, to be consistent with experimental data on the thermal interactions of single micron-sized colloids in a viscous solvent.

We have carried out Brownian dynamics simulations of binary mixtures of charged colloidal suspensions of two different diameter particles with varying volume fractions phi and charged impurity concentrations n(i). For a given phi, the effective temperature is lowered in many steps by reducing n(i) to see how structure and dynamics evolve. The structural quantities studied are the partial and total pair distribution functions g(tau), the static structure factors, the time average g(<(tau)over bar>), and the Wendt-Abraham parameter. The dynamic quantity is the temporal evolution of the total meansquared displacement (MSD). All these parameters show that by lowering the effective temperature at phi = 0.2, liquid freezes into a body-centered-cubic crystal whereas at phi = 0.3, a glassy state is formed. The MSD at intermediate times shows significant subdiffusive behavior whose time span increases with a reduction in the effective temperature. The mean-squared displacements for the supercooled liquid with phi = 0.3 show staircase behavior indicating a strongly cooperative jump motion of the particles.

Red sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus L.), belonging to the family Fabaceae, is one of the most valuable trees, and has limited distribution in India. In view of its high price, restricted distribution and usefulness as a timber tree, there is urgent need to obtain improved lines, in both quality and quantity. We have established a method for production of complete plantlets by tissue culture. We report here the successful development of red sandalwood plantlets by induction of multiple shoots from shoot tips, and successful transfer of micropropagated plants to soil.

Two smectite samples having different layer charges were pillared using hydroxy aluminium oligomers at a OH/Al ratio of 2.5 and at pH 4.3 to 4.6. Pillaring was carried out at different conditions such as ageing, temperature and base addition time of the pillaring solution, and also in the presence of nonionic surfactant polyoxyethylene sorbitanmonooleate (Tween-80). The primary objective of preparing at different conditions was to introduce varied quantities of aluminium oligomer between the layers and to study its effect on the properties of the pillared products. A simple method has been followed to estimate the amount of interlayer aluminium. A quantity called pillar density number (PDN) based on the ratio of interlayer Al adsorbed to CEC of the parent clay has been effectively used to evaluate the nature of the resulting pillared product. PDN, for a given clay, was found to correlate well with the sharpness of the d(001) peaks for the air dried samples. The calculated number of pillars, varied from 3.00 x 10(18) to 5.32 x 10(18) per meq charge. The present study shows that a higher value of PDN is indicative of better thermal stability. Pillar density number may be conveniently used as a measure of the thermal stability of pillared samples.

Stable carbon isotope ratios in bone collagen have been used in a variety of dietary studies in modern and fossil animals, including humans. Inherent in the stable isotope technique is the assumption that the isotopic signature is a reflection of the diet and is persistent in collagen because this is a relatively inert protein. Carbon isotope analyses of bones from a southern Indian population of Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), a long-lived mammal that alternates seasonally between a predominantly C3 (browse) and C4 (grass) plant diet, showed two patterns that have important implications for dietary interpretation based on isotopic studies. Relative to the quantity of the two plant types consumed on average, the ?13C signal in collagen indicated that more carbon was incorporated from C3 plants, possibly due to their higher protein contribution. There was a much greater variance in ?13C values of collagen in sub-adult (range -10.5 to-22.7, variance=14.51) compared to adult animals (range -16.0 to -20.3, variance=1.85) pointing to high collagen turnover rates and non-persistent isotopic signatures in younger, growing animals. It thus seems important to correct for any significant relative differences in nutritive value of food types and also consider the age of an animal before drawing definite conclusions about its diet from isotope ratios.

Time course of release of immunoreactive hCG to a placental incubation in the medium revealed a steady increase over a period of 4 hours. However, levels in the tissue, showed an increase at 10' and 60' after an initial decrease. Studies using A23187 which stimulated hCG secretion also revealed a net increase in the quantity of hCG in the tissue. These results sugest that the secretion of hCG acts as a stimulus for fresh synthesis of hCG.

An important tool in signal processing is the use of eigenvalue and singular value decompositions for extracting information from time-series/sensor array data. These tools are used in the so-called subspace methods that underlie solutions to the harmonic retrieval problem in time series and the directions-of-arrival (DOA) estimation problem in array processing. The subspace methods require the knowledge of eigenvectors of the underlying covariance matrix to estimate the parameters of interest. Eigenstructure estimation in signal processing has two important classes: (i) estimating the eigenstructure of the given covariance matrix and (ii) updating the eigenstructure estimates given the current estimate and new data. In this paper, we survey some algorithms for both these classes useful for harmonic retrieval and DOA estimation problems. We begin by surveying key results in the literature and then describe, in some detail, energy function minimization approaches that underlie a class of feedback neural networks. Our approaches estimate some or all of the eigenvectors corresponding to the repeated minimum eigenvalue and also multiple orthogonal eigenvectors corresponding to the ordered eigenvalues of the covariance matrix. Our presentation includes some supporting analysis and simulation results. We may point out here that eigensubspace estimation is a vast area and all aspects of this cannot be fully covered in a single paper. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.
