According to Wen's theory, a universal behavior of the fractional quantum Hall edge is expected at sufficiently low energies, where the dispersion of the elementary edge excitation is linear. A microscopic calculation shows that the actual dispersion is indeed linear at low energies, but deviates from linearity beyond certain energy, and also exhibits an "edge roton minimum." We determine the edge exponent from a microscopic approach, and find that the nonlinearity of the dispersion makes a surprisingly small correction to the edge exponent even at energies higher than the roton energy. We explain this insensitivity as arising from the fact that the energy at maximum spectral weight continues to show an almost linear behavior up to fairly high energies. We also study, in an effective-field theory, how interactions modify the exponent for a reconstructed edge with multiple edge modes. Relevance to experiment is discussed.

Thermal reactivities of ammonium perchlorate (AP) pressed at 1500 kg cm–2 for various dwell times ranging from 0 to 45 min have been investigated. Reactivity of AP is observed to (a) increase with increase of dwell time up to 15 min and (b) decrease for the compacts obtained at higher dwell times. X-ray diffraction profiles of the compacts indicated a broadening up to 15 min dwell time and a narrowing thereafter. The increase in the reactivity has been attributed to the increase in the number of gross imperfections and plastic deformation of particles. The decrease in the reactivity is explained in terms of recrystallization after plastic deformation. Local heating is shown to exist during compaction though its macroscopic effect is insignificant during compaction of AP.

Nonlinear conduction in a single crystal of charge-ordered Pr0.63Ca0.37MnO3 has bren investigated in an applied magnetic field. In zero field, the nonlinear conduction, which starts at T< T-CO, can give rise to a region of negative differential resistance (NDR) which shows up below the Neel temperature. Application of a magnetic field Inhibits the appearance of NDR and makes the nonlinear conduction strongly hysteritic on cycling of the bias current. This is most severe in the temperature range where the charge-ordered state melts in an applied magnetic field. Our experiment strongly suggests that application of a magnetic field in the charge-ordering regime causes a coexistence of two phases.

A theoretical analysis of the external heavy atom effect of a halogen atom on the radiative rate constant of phosphorescence is examined as a function of position of a bromine atom or atoms relative to a naphthalene or a benzene chromophore for a series of mono- and dibromo-, naphtho-, and benzonorbornenes. The theoretical results are then compared to experimentaldata and lead to the conclusion that the enhancement of the phosphorescence process takes place through the second-ordermixing of the triplet states of the chromophore with the singlet charge transfer states arising primarily from an electron transferfrom the orbitals of the heavy atom perturber to the unfilled x* orbitals of the chromophore.

A novel method of detecting the charge-carrying species in inorganic decomposable salts is described. In ammonium perchlorate it is observed that the charge-carrying species at temperatures 150 and 230°C are oppositely charged; i.e., they are negatively charged (ClO−4 ions) at 230°C and positively charged (H+ or NH+4) at 150°C.

The structural changes occurring during warm working of Cd-1.5 pct Zn alloy and their effect on the subsequent mechanical properties are studied. It is observed that changes in grain size and preferred orientation are important to a large extent in controlling the mechanical strength. The Hall-Petch slope,R decreases in the warm worked material while the friction stress, σo increases. The lowerR values are attributed to the development of a (101l) texture and the higher σo values are interpreted on the basis of changes in the basal texture.

Accelerated ageing studies for three composite propellant formulations, namely polystyrene (PS)/ ammonium perchlorate (AP), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)/AP and poly phenol formaldehyde (PPF)/AP have been carried out in the temperature range of 55-125°C. Measurements of the ultimate compression strength (Uc) and isothermal decomposition rate (TD rate) were monitored as a function of storage time and temperature. The change in Uc was found to be linearly dependent on the change in TD rate irrespective of the propellant systems. Analysis of the results further revealed that the cause of ageing for both Uc and burning rate (r) is the thermal decomposition of the propellant. The safe-life for the change in mechanical properties was found to be higher compared to the change in r for PS and PMMA based propellants.

Addition of trimethylammonium perchlorate to potassium perchlorate (KP) catalyzes its thermal decomposition. However, although the additive sensitises KP-PU propellant decomposition, its combustion is desensitised. The observed effects have been explained in terms of the role played by the early formation of potassium chloride.

Ternary cobalt(III) complexes CoL(B)] (1-3) of a trianionic tetradentate phenolate-based ligand (L) and phenanthroline bases (B), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyridoquinoxaline (dpq in 2) and dipyridophenazine (dppz in 3) are synthesized, characterized from X-ray crystallographic, analytical and spectral techniques, and their utility in photodynamic therapy (PDT) of thyroid diseases caused by TSH receptor dysfunction is probed. The complexes display a visible spectral band within the PDT spectral window at similar to 690 nm. Photodynamic potential was estimated through DNA cleavage activity of the dpq and dppz complexes in UV-A light of 365 nm and red light of 676 nm. The reactions proceed via the hydroxyl radical pathway. The complexes retain their DNA photocleavage activity in red light under anaerobic conditions, a situation normally prevails in hypoxic tumor core. Investigation into the photocytotoxic potential of these complexes showed that the dppz complex 3 is approximately 4-fold more active in the HEK293 cells expressing human thyrotropin receptor (HEK293-hTSHR) than in the parental cell line and has an insignificant effect on an unrelated human cervical carcinoma cell line (HeLa). Photoexcitation of complex 3 in HEK293-hTSHR cells leads to damage hTSHR as evidenced from the decrease in cAMP formation both in absence and presence of hTSH and decrease in the TSHR immunofluorescence with a concomitant cytoplasmic translocation of the membrane protein, cadherin. The involvement of hTSHR is evidenced from the ability of complex 3 to bind to the extracellular domain of hTSHR (hTSHR-ECD) with a K-d value of 81 nM and from the photocleavage of hTSHR-ECD.

An experimental setup using radiative heating has been used to understand the thermo-physical phenomena and chemical transformations inside acoustically levitated cerium nitrate precursor droplets. In this transformation process, through infrared thermography and high speed imaging, events such as vaporization, precipitation and chemical reaction have been recorded at high temporal resolution, leading to nanoceria formation with a porous morphology. The cerium nitrate droplet undergoes phase and shape changes throughout the vaporization process. Four distinct stages were delineated during the entire vaporization process namely pure evaporation, evaporation with precipitate formation, chemical reaction with phase change and formation of final porous precipitate. The composition was examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy that revealed nanostructures and confirmed highly porous morphology with trapped gas pockets. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high speed imaging of the final precipitate revealed the presence of trapped gases in the form of bubbles. TEM also showed the presence of nanoceria crystalline structures at 70 degrees C. The current study also looked into the effect of different heating powers on the process. At higher power, each phase is sustained for smaller duration and higher maximum temperature. In addition, the porosity of the final precipitate increased with power. A non-dimensional time scale is proposed to correlate the effect of laser intensity and vaporization rate of the solvent (water). The effect of acoustic levitation was also studied. Due to acoustic streaming, the solute selectively gets transported to the bottom portion of the droplet due to strong circulation, providing it rigidity and allows it become bowl shaped.
