We present a simple template-free method for the synthesis of interconnected hierarchical porous palladium nanostructures by controlling the aggregation of nanoparticles in organic media. The interaction between the nanoparticles is tuned by varying the dielectric constant of the medium consistent with DLVO calculations. The reaction products range from discrete nanoparticles to compact porous clusters with large specific surface areas. The nanoclusters exhibit hierarchical porosity and are found to exhibit excellent activity towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol into 4-aminophenol and hydrogen oxidation. The method opens up possibilities for synthesizing porous clusters of other functional inorganics in organic media.

We highlight our recent experimental work on an efficient molecular nonlinear optical crystal, 3-methoxy 4-hydroxy benzaldehyde (MHBA). Optical quality single crystals of MHBA were grown from mixtures of solvents and from melt. The overall absorption and transparency window were improved by growing them in a mixture of chloroform and acetone. The grown crystals were characterized for their optical transmission, mechanical hardness and laser damage. We have observed a strong correlation between mechanical properties and laser induced damage.

The design of compounds with novel and improved physico-chemical properties as advanced functional materials with a specific application spectrum requires the knowledge about possible supramolecular packing motifs and their experimental control in crystalline lattice. Besides the structure of the individual molecule, non-covalent interactions play a significant role in the determination of molecular conformation, along with the formation of three-dimensional supramolecular architecture in a crystal as a requirement for molecular recognition processes, and the related bioactivity. Involvement of functional groups will contribute to the formation of a predefined packing motif due to their well-defined interactions. The strength and directionality of these interactions create characteristic packing motifs, which can be used for the design of supramolecular arrangements by the development of appropriate strategies for the precise control of their topology. Most relevant of these non-covalent interactions are stacking interactions and hydrogen bonds, which have been subjects of extensive study in the last two decades. In recent literature, substantial efforts have been put in by various researchers towards the understanding of interactions involving organic fluorine and the role they play in generating different packing motifs which guides assembling of molecules in the crystal lattice.

Five tartrate-amine complexes have been studied in terms of crystal packing and hydrogen bonding frameworks. The salts are 3-bromoanilinium-L-monohydrogen tartrate 1, 3-fluoroanilinium-D-dibenzoylmonohydrogen tartrate 2, 1-nonylium-D-dibenzoylmonohydrogen tartrate 3, 1 -decylium-D-dibenzoylmonohydrogen tartrate 4, and 1,4-diaminobutanium-D-dibenzoyl tartrate trihydrate 5. The results indicate that there are no halogen-halogen interactions in the haloaromatic-tartrate complexes. The anionic framework allows accomodation of ammonium ions that bear alkyl chain residues of variable lengths. The long chain amines in these structures remain disordered while the short chain amines form multidirectional hydrogen bonds on either side.

Electrochemical precipitation of cobalt(II) hydroxide from nitrate solutions containing organic molecules, such as glucose, fructose, lactose, glycerol, and citric acid, yields a new modification of cobalt (II) hydroxide (a = 3.09 +/- 0.03 Angstrom, c = 23.34 +/- 0.36 Angstrom) that is isostructural with cu-nickel hydroxide; precipitation in the absence of organic additives gives the stable, brucite-like, beta-CO (OH)(2). Thin films of barium strontium titanate (BST) including BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 end members were deposited using the metallo-organic decomposition (MOD) technique. Processing parameters such as nonstoichiometry, annealing temperature and time, film thickness and doping concentration were correlated with the structural and electrical properties of the films. A random polycrystalline structure was observed for all MOD films under the processing conditions in this study. The microstructures of the films showed multi-grains structure through the film thickness. A dielectric constant of 563 was observed for (Ba0.7Sr0.3)TiO3 films rapid thermal annealed at 750 degrees C for 60 s. The dielectric constant increased with annealing temperature and film thickness, while the dielectric constant could reach the bulk values for thicknesses as thin as similar to 0.3 mu m. Nonstoichiometry and doping in the films resulted in a lowering of the dielectric constant. For near-stoichiometric films, a small dielectric dispersion obeying the Curie-von Schweidler type dielectric response was observed. This behavior may be attributed to the presence of the high density of disordered grain boundaries. All MOD processed films showed trap-distributed space-charge limited conduction (SCLC) behavior with slope of similar to 7.5-10 regardless of the chemistry and processing parameter due to the presence of main boundaries through the film thickness. The grain boundaries masked the effect of donor-doping, so that all films showed distributed-trap SCLC behavior without discrete-traps. Donor-doping could significantly improve the time-dependent dielectric breakdown behavior of BST thin films, mostly likely due to the lower oxygen vacancy concentration resulted from donor-doping. From the results of charge storage density, leakage current and time-dependent dielectric breakdown behavior, BST thin films are found to be promising candidates for 64 and 256Mb ULSI DRAM applications. Nebulized spray pyrolysis of metal-organic precursors in methanol solution has been employed to prepare powders of TiO2, ZrO2 and PbZr0.5Ti0.5O3 (PZT). This process ensures complete decomposition of the precursors at relatively low temperatures. The particles have been examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy as well as X-ray diffraction. As prepared, the particles are hollow agglomerates of diameter 0.1-1.6 mu m, but after heating to higher temperatures the ultimate size of the particles comprising the agglomerates are considerably smaller (0.1 mu m or less in diameter) and crystalline.

A series of 2-haloethoxyethyl cholesteryl ethers has been synthesized. Each material shows attractive liquid-crystalline properties as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing microscopy, and temperature-dependence of selective reflection characteristic of the cholesteric mesophase. These are interesting examples of simple, nonpolymeric, single component systems that show the cholesteric mesophase at room temperature.

Layered organic inorganic hybrids based on perovskite-derived alkylammonium lead halides have been demonstrated as important new materials in the construction of molecular electronic devices. Typical of this class of materials are the single-perovskite slab lead iodides of the general formula (CnH2n+1NH3)(2)PbI4. While for small n, these compounds are amenable to single-crystal structure determination, the increasing degree of disorder in the long chain (n = 12,14...) compounds makes such an analysis difficult. In this study, we use powder X-ray diffraction, and vibrational and C-13 NMR spectroscopies to establish the conformation, orientation and organization of hydrocarbon chains in the series of layered alkylammonium lead iodides (CnH2n+1NH3)(2)PbI4 (n = 12,16,18). We find that the alkyl chains adopt a tilted bilayer arrangement, while the structure of the inorganic layer remains invariant with respect to the value of n. Conformation-sensitive methylene stretching modes in the infrared and Raman spectra, as well as the C-13 NMR spectra indicate that bonds in the methylene chain are in trans configuration. The skeletal modes of the alkyl chain in the Raman spectra establish that there is a high degree of all-trans conformational registry for the values of n studied here. From the orientation dependence of the infrared spectra of crystals of (CnH2n+1NH3)(2)PbI4 ( n = 12,16), we find that the molecular axis of the all-trans alkyl chains are tilted away from the interlayer normal by an angle of 55degrees. This value of this tilt angle is consistent with the dependence of the c lattice expansion as a function of n, as determined from powder X-ray diffraction.

We have investigated the microstructure of thin films grown by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition using a beta-diketonate complex of cobalt, namely cobalt (11) acetylacetonate. Films were deposited on three different substrates: Si(100), thermally oxidised silicon [SiO2/Si(100)] and glass at the same time. As-grown films were characterised by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, scanning tunnelling microscopy, atomic force microscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry. Electrical resistivity was measured for all the films as a function of temperature. We found that films have very fine grains, resulting in high electrical resistivity Further, film microstructure has a strong dependence on the nature of the substrate and there is diffusion of silicon and oxygen into cobalt from the substrate. The single perovskite slab alkylammonium lead iodides (CnH2n+1NH3)(2)PbI4, n = 12, 16, 18, display two phase transitions, just above room temperature, associated with changes in the alkylammonium chains. We have followed these two phase transitions using scanning calorimetry, X-ray powder diffraction, and IR and Raman spectroscopies. We find the first phase transition to be associated with symmetry changes arising from a dynamic rotational disordering of the ammonium headgroup of the chain whereas the second transition, the melting of the chains in two dimensions, is characterized by an increased conformational disorder of the methylene units of the alkyl chains. We examine these phase transitions in light of the interesting optical properties of these materials, as well as the relevance of these systems as models for phase transitions in lipid bilayers.

A new class of fluorinated gelators derived from bile acids is reported. Perfluoroalkyl chains were attached to the bile acids through two different ester linkages and were synthesized following simple transformations. The gelation property of these derivatives is a function of the bile acid moiety, the spacer and the fluoroalkyl chain length. By varying these parameters, gels were obtained in aromatic hydrocarbons, DMSO and DMSO/DMF-H(2)O mixtures of different proportions. Several derivatives of deoxycholic and lithocholic acids were found to be efficient organogelators, while the reported bile-acid based organogelators are mostly derived from the cholic acid moiety. The efficient gelators among these compounds formed gels well below 1.0% (w/v) and hence they can be termed as supergelators. The mechanical properties of these gels could be modulated by changing either the bile acid moiety or by varying the length of the fluoroalkyl segment. The presence of CO(2)-philic perfluoroalkyl groups is also expected to enhance their solubility in supercritical CO(2) and hence these compounds are promising candidates for making aerogels.
