This paper presents an artificial feed forward neural network (FFNN) approach for the assessment of power system voltage stability. A novel approach based on the input-output relation between real and reactive power, as well as voltage vectors for generators and load buses is used to train the neural net (NN). The input properties of the feed forward network are generated from offline training data with various simulated loading conditions using a conventional voltage stability algorithm based on the L-index. The neural network is trained for the L-index output as the target vector for each of the system loads. Two separate trained NN, corresponding to normal loading and contingency, are investigated on the 367 node practical power system network. The performance of the trained artificial neural network (ANN) is also investigated on the system under various voltage stability assessment conditions. As compared to the computationally intensive benchmark conventional software, near accurate results in the value of L-index and thus the voltage profile were obtained. Proposed algorithm is fast, robust and accurate and can be used online for predicting the L-indices of all the power system buses. The proposed ANN approach is also shown to be effective and computationally feasible in voltage stability assessment as well as potential enhancements within an overall energy management system in order to determining local and global stability indices

Syntheses of manganese(I)-based molecular squares have been accomplished in facile one-pot reaction conditions at room temperature. Self-assembly of eight components has resulted in the formation of M4L4-type metallacyclophanes [Mn(CO)(3)Br(mu-L)(4) (1-3) using pentacarbonylbromomanganese as metal precursor and rigid azine ligands such as pyrazine, 4,4'-bipyridine, and trans-1,2-bis(4pyridyl)ethylene, respectively, as bridging ligands. The metallacyclophanes have been characterized on the basis of IR, NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods.

Ferrocene-conjugated reduced Schiff base (Fc-metH) copper(II) complexes of L-methionine and phenanthroline bases, namely, Cu(Fc-met)(B)](NO3), where B is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 2), dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 3), and 2-(naphthalen-1-yl)-1H-imidazo4,5-f]1,10]phenanthroline (nip in 4), were prepared and characterized and their photocytotoxicity studied (Fc = ferrocenyl moiety). Complexes Cu(Ph-met)(B)](NO3) of the reduced Schiff base from benzaldehyde and L-methionine (Ph-metH) and B (phen in 5, dppz in 6) were prepared and used as control species. Complexes 1 and 5 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 as a discrete monomer has a CuN3OS core with the thiomethyl group as the axial ligand. Complex 5 has a polymeric structure with a CuN3O2 core in the solid state. Complexes 5 and 6 are formulated as Cu(Ph-met)(B)(H2O)] (NO3) in an aqueous phase based on the mass spectral data. Complexes 1-4 showed the Cu(II)-Cu(I) and Fc(+)-Fc redox couples at similar to 0.0 and similar to 0.5 V vs SCE, respectively, in DMF-0.1 M (Bu4N)-N-n](ClO4). A Cu(II)-based weak d-d band near 600 nm and a relatively strong ferrocenyl band at similar to 450 nm were observed in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer (1:4 v/v). The complexes bind to calf thymus DNA, exhibit moderate chemical nuclease activity forming (OH)-O-center dot radical species, and are efficient photocleavers of pUC19 DNA in visible light of 454, 568, and 647 rim, forming (OH)-O-center dot radical as the reactive oxygen species. They are cytotoxic in HeLa (human cervical cancer) and MCF-7 (human breast cancer) cells, showing an enhancement of cytotoxicity upon visible light irradiation. Significant change in the nuclear morphology of the HeLa cells was observed with 3 in visible light compared to the nonirradiated sample. Confocal imaging using 4 showed its nuclear localization within the HeLa cells.

A new carbazole-based 90 degrees dipyridyl donor 3,6-di(4-pyridylethynyl)carbazole (L) containing carbazole-ethynyl functionality is synthesized in reasonable yield using the Sonagashira coupling reaction. Multinuclear NMR, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), including single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis characterized this 90 degrees building unit. The stoichiometry combination of L with several Pd(II)/Pt(II)-based 90 degrees acceptors (1a-1d) yielded 2 + 2] self-assembled metallacycles (2a-2d) under mild conditions in quantitative yields 1a = cis-(dppf)Pd(OTf)(2); 1b = cis-(dppf)Pt(OTf)(2); 1c = cis-(tmen)Pd(NO3)(2); 1d = 3,6-bis{trans-Pt(C C) (PEt3)(2)(NO3))carbazole]. All these macrocycles were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, and the molecular structure of 2a was unambiguously determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Incorporation of ethynyl functionality to the carbazole backbone causes the resulted macrocycles (2a-2d) to be pi-electron rich and thereby exhibit strong emission characteristics. The macrocycle 2a has a large internal concave aromatic surface. The fluorescence quenching study suggests that 2a forms a similar to 1:1 complex with C-60 with a high association constant of K-sv = 1.0 X 10(5) M-1.

In search for a new antioxidant and antimicrobial agent with improved potency, we synthesized a series of benzofuran based 1,3,5-substituted pyrazole analogues (5a-l) in five step reaction. Initially, o-alkyl derivative of salicyaldehyde readily furnish corresponding 2-acetyl benzofuran 2 in good yield, on treatment with 1,8-diaza bicyclo5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) in the presence of molecular sieves. Further, aldol condensation with vanillin, Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction with hydrazine hydrate followed by coupling of substituted anilines afforded target compounds. The structures of newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, mass, elemental analysis and further screened for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Among the tested compounds 5d and 5f exhibited good antioxidant property with 50% inhibitory concentration higher than that of reference while compounds 5h and 5l exhibited good antimicrobial activity at concentration 1.0 and 0.5 mg/mL compared with standard, streptomycin and fluconazole respectively. Causal relationships existing between observed levels of groundwater in a semi-arid sub-basin of the Kabini River basin (Karnataka state, India) are investigated in this study. A Vector Auto Regressive model is used for this purpose. Its structure is built on an upstream/downstream interaction network based on observed hydro-physical properties. Exogenous climatic forcing is used as an input based on cumulated rainfall departure. Optimal models are obtained thanks to a trial approach and are used as a proxy of the dynamics to derive causal networks. It appears to be an interesting tool for analysing the causal relationships existing inside the basin. The causal network reveals 3 main regions: the Northeastern part of the Gundal basin is closely coupled to the outlet dynamics. The Northwestern part is mainly controlled by the climatic forcing and only marginally linked to the outlet dynamic. Finally, the upper part of the basin plays as a forcing rather than a coupling with the lower part of the basin allowing for a separate analysis of this local behaviour. The analysis also reveals differential time scales at work inside the basin when comparing upstream oriented with downstream oriented causalities. In the upper part of the basin, time delays are close to 2 months in the upward direction and lower than 1 month in the downward direction. These time scales are likely to be good indicators of the hydraulic response time of the basin which is a parameter usually difficult to estimate practically. This suggests that, at the sub-basin scale, intra-annual time scales would be more relevant scales for analysing or modelling tropical basin dynamics in hard rock (granitic and gneissic) aquifers ubiquitous in south India. A new thieno3,2-b]thiophenediketopyrrolopyrrole-benzo1,2-b:4,5-b']dithio phene based narrow optical gap co-polymer (PTTDPP-BDT) has been synthesized and characterized for field-effect transistors and solar cells. In field-effect transistors the polymer exhibited ambipolar charge transport behaviour with maximum hole and electron mobilities of 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and 10(-5) cm(2)V(-1) s(-1), respectively. The respectable charge transporting properties of the polymer were consistent with X-ray diffraction measurements that showed close molecular packing in the solid state. The difference in hole and electron mobilities was explained by density functional theory calculations, which showed that the highest occupied molecular orbital was delocalized along the polymer backbone with the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital localized on the bis(thieno3,2-b]thiophene)diketopyrrolopyrrole units. Bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices with the fullerene acceptor PC70BM were fabricated and delivered a maximum conversion efficiency of 3.3% under AM1.5G illumination. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. A new type of multi-port isolated bidirectional DC-DC converter is proposed in this study. In the proposed converter, transfer of power takes place through addition of magnetomotive forces generated by multiple windings on a common transformer core. This eliminates the need for a centralised storage capacitor to interface all the ports. Hence, the requirement of an additional power transfer stage from the centralised capacitor can also be eliminated. The converter can be used for a multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) system. A pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy for controlling simultaneous power flow in the MIMO converter is also proposed. The proposed PWM scheme works in the discontinuous conduction mode. The leakage inductance can be chosen to aid power transfer. By using the proposed converter topology and PWM scheme, the need to compute power flow equations to determine the magnitude and direction of power flow between ports is alleviated. Instead, a simple controller structure based on average current control can be used to control the power flow. This study discusses the operating phases of the proposed multi-port converter along with its PWM scheme, the design process for each of the ports and finally experimental waveforms that validate the multi-port scheme.

Four dinuclear bis(mu-Cl) bridged copper(II) complexes, Cu-2(mu-Cl)(2)(L-X)(2)](ClO4)(2) (L-X = N,N-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazole-1-yl)-methyl]benzylamine with X = H(1), OMe(2), Me(3) and Cl(4)), have been synthesized and characterized by the single crystal X-ray diffraction method. In these complexes, each copper(II) center is penta-coordinated with square-pyramidal geometry. In addition to the tridentate L-X ligand, a chloride ion occupies the last position of the square plane. This chloride ion is also bonded to the neighboring Cu(II) site in its axial position forming an SP-I dinuclear Cu(II) unit that exhibits small intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions and supported by DFT calculations. The complexes 1-3 exhibit methylmonooxygenase (pMMO) behaviour and oxidise 4-tert-butylcatechol (4-TBCH2) with molecular oxygen in MeOH or MeCN to 4-tert-butyl-benzoquinone (4-TBQ), 5-methoxy-4-tert-butyl-benzoquinone (5-MeO-4-TBQ) as the major products along with 6,6'-Bu-t-biphenyl-3,4,3',4'-tetraol and others as minor products. These are further confirmed by ESI- and FAB-mass analyses. A tentative catalytic cycle has been framed based on the mass spectral analysis of the products and DFT calculations on individual intermediates that are energetically feasible.

A superior drug formulation capable of achieving efficient osteogenesis is in imperative demand for the treatment of osteoporosis. In the present study we investigated the potential of using novel risedronate-hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticle based formulation in an animal model of established osteoporosis. Nanoparticles of HA loaded with risedronate (NHLR) of various sizes (80-130 nm) were generated for bone targeted drug delivery. Three months after ovariectomy, 36 ovariectomized (OVX) rats were divided into 6 equal groups and treated with various doses of NHLR (500,350 and 250 mu g/kg intravenous single dose) and sodium risedronate (500 mu g/kg, intravenous single dose). Untreated OVX and sham OVX served as controls. One month after drug administration, the left tibia and femur were tested for bone mechanical properties and histology, respectively. In the right femur, bone density was measured by method based on Archimedes principle and bone porosity analyses were performed using X-ray imaging. NHLR (250 mu g/kg) showed a significant increase in bone density and reduced bone porosity when compared with OVX control. Moreover, NHLR (250 mu g/kg) significantly increased bone mechanical properties and bone quality when compared with OVX control. The results strongly suggest that the NHLR, which is a novel nanoparticle based formulation, has a therapeutic advantage over risedronate sodium monotherapy for the treatment of osteoporosis in a rat model of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

We demonstrate the activity of Ti0.84Pt0.01Fe0.15O2-delta and Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta catalysts towards the CO oxidation and water gas shift (VMS) reaction. Both the catalysts were synthesized in the nano crystalline form by a low temperature sonochemical method and characterized by different techniques such as XRD, FT-Raman, TEM, FT-IR, XPS and BET surface analyzer. H-2-TPR results corroborate the intimate contact between noble metal and Fe ions in the both catalysts that facilitates the reducibility of the support. In the absence of feed CO2 and H-2, nearly 100% conversion of CO to CO2 with 100% H-2 selectivity was observed at 300 degrees C and 260 degrees C respectively, for Ti0.84Pt0.01Fe0.15O2-delta and Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta catalyst. However, the catalytic performance of Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta deteriorates in the presence of feed CO2 and H-2. The change in the support reducibility is the primary reason for the significant increase in the activity for CO oxidation and WGS reaction. The effect of Fe addition was more significant in Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta than Ti0.84Pt0.01Fe0.15O2-delta. Based on the spectroscopic evidences and surface phenomena, a hybrid reaction scheme utilizing both surface hydroxyl groups and the lattice oxygen was hypothesized over these catalysts for WGS reaction. The mechanisms based on the formate and redox pathway were used to fit the ldnetic data. The analysis of experimental data shows the redox mechanism is the dominant pathway over these catalysts. This work proposes a boosting-based transfer learning approach for head-pose classification from multiple, low-resolution views. Head-pose classification performance is adversely affected when the source (training) and target (test) data arise from different distributions (due to change in face appearance, lighting, etc). Under such conditions, we employ Xferboost, a Logitboost-based transfer learning framework that integrates knowledge from a few labeled target samples with the source model to effectively minimize misclassifications on the target data. Experiments confirm that the Xferboost framework can improve classification performance by up to 6%, when knowledge is transferred between the CLEAR and FBK four-view headpose datasets.

A copper(II)-based d-d band near 600 nm and a ferrocenyl band at similar to 450 nm were observed in DMF-Tris-HCI buffer (1:4 v/v) in respective complexes. They are cytotoxic in HeLa (human cervical cancer) and MCF-7 (human breast cancer) cells showing an enhancement of cytotoxicity in visible light.
