The antifertility activity of the plant Vicoa indica was tested in proven fertile bonnet monkeys. The dry powder of the whole plant was fed to the cycling monkeys on day 1 to 14 of menstrual cycle or day 9 to 14 of cycle or on day 2 to 5 after delivery and the fertility was evaluated in the following cycle in cycle fed monkey or after weaning the young one in the post-partum fed monkeys. Results indicated that while feeding in the post-partum monkeys did not confer any protection against pregnancy feeding during day 1 to 14 of cycle, protected from pregnancy. The monkeys did not become pregnant even after exposure to the proven fertile male monkeys for 13 ovulatory cycles while all the vehicle fed monkeys became pregnant within 3 cycles.

Riboflavin carrier protein (RCP) is obligatorily involved in yolk deposition of the vitamin, riboflavin, in the developing oocyte of the hen. The production of this protein is inducible by oestrogen. It is evolutionarily conserved in terms of its physicochemical, immunological and functional characteristics. It is the prime mediator of vitamin supply to the developing fetus in mammals, including primates. Passive immunoneutralization of the protein terminates pregnancy in rats. Active immunization of rats and bonnet monkeys with avian RCP prevents pregnancy without causing any adverse physiological effects of the mother in terms of her vitamin status, reproductive cycles or reproductive-endocrine profile. Denatured, linearized RCP is more effective in eliciting neutralizing antibodies capable of interfering with embryonic viability either before or during peri-implantation stages. Two defined stretches of sequential epitopes, one located at the N-terminus and the other at the C-terminus of the protein have been identified. Active immunization with either of these epitopes conjugated with diptheria toxoid curtails pregnancy in rats and monkeys. Immunohistochemical localization of RCP on ovulated oocytes and early embryos shows that the antibodies cause degeneration only of early embryos. RCP is produced intra-testicularly and becomes localized on acrosomal surface of mammalian spermatozoa. Active immunization of male rats and monkeys with denatured RCP markedly reduces fertility by impairing the fertilizing potential of spermatozoa. These findings suggest that RCP, or its defined fragments, could be a novel, first generation vaccine for regulating fertility in both the sexes.

The responses of the field mouse Mus booduga to shifts in schedules of LD cycles were monitored and the results were interpreted with the help of a PRC constructed for the same species. The results reveal that, M. booduga reentrained faster with a lesser number of transients after delay shifts than advance shifts, thus exhibiting “asymmetry effect.” A positive correlation was observed between the number of transients and the number of hours of shift. In most of the shifts, the sign of the transients (negative for delaying transients and positive for advancing transients) coincided with the direction of the shift. Interestingly, 11 and 12 h of advance shifting resulted in delaying transients. An 11-h advance shift can also be interpreted as a 13-h delay. Reentrainment through delaying transients is faster as compared to reentrainment through advancing transients. Thus, this animal might have taken a “shorter route,” as proved by the fact that an 11-h advance shift has evoked delaying transients. But a 13-h advance shift evoked only advancing transients. This prompts us to speculate that there may be a “phase jump” in M. booduga. Further, irrespective of whether L or D has been doubled in a 12-h shift, both evoked only delaying transients.

An experimental investigation into the ambient temperature, load-controlled tensiontension fatigue behavior of a martensitic Nitinol shape memory alloy (SMA) was conducted. Fatigue life for several stress levels spanning the critical stress for detwinning was determined and compared with that obtained on an alloy similar in composition but in the austenitic state at room temperature. Results show that the fatigue life of the pseudo-plastic alloy is superior to superelastic shape memory alloy. The stressstrain hysteretic response, monitored throughout the fatigue loading, reveals progressive strain accumulation with the cyclic loading. In addition, the area of hysteresis and recoverable and frictional energies were found to decrease with increasing number of fatigue cycles. Post-mortem characterization of the fatigued specimens through calorimetry and fractography was conducted in order to get further insight into the fatigue micromechanisms. These results are discussed in terms of reversible and irreversible microstructural changes that take place during cyclic loading. Aspects associated with self-heating of martensitic alloy undergoing high frequency stress cycling are discussed.

Fabrication of multilayer ultrathin composite films composed of nanosized titanium dioxide particles (P25, Degussa) and polyelectrolytes (PELs), such as poly(allyl amine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrene sulfonate sodium salt) (PSS), on glass substrates using the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique and its potentia application for the photodegradation of rhodamine B under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation has been reported. The polyelectrolytes and TiO2 were deposited on glass substrates at pH 2.5 and the growth of the multilayers was studied using UV/vis speccrophotometer. Thicknes measurements of the films showed a linear increase in film thickness with increase in number of bilayers. The surface microstructure of the thin films was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope. The ability of the catalysts immobilized by this technique was compared with TiO2 films prepared by drop casting and spin coating methods. Comparison has been made in terms of film stability and photodegradation of rhodamine B. Process variables such as the effect of surface area of the multilayers, umber of bilayers, and initial dye concentration on photodegradation of rhodamine B were studied. Degradation efficiency increased with increase in number of catalysts (total surface area) and bilayers. Kinetics analysis indicated that the photodegradation rates follow first order kinetics. Under maximum loading of TiO2, with five catalyst slides having 20 bilayers of polyelectrolyte/TiO2 on each, 100 mL of 10 mg/L dye solution could be degraded completely in 4 h. The same slides could be reused with the same efficiency for several cycles. This study demonstrates that nanoparticles can be used in wastewater treatment using a simple immobilization technique. This makes the process an attractive option for scale up.

An acyclic edge coloring of a graph is a proper edge coloring such that there are no bichromatic cycles. The acyclic chromatic index of a graph is the minimum number k such that there is an acyclic edge coloring using k colors and it is denoted by a′(G). From a result of Burnstein it follows that all subcubic graphs are acyclically edge colorable using five colors. This result is tight since there are 3-regular graphs which require five colors. In this paper we prove that any non-regular connected graph of maximum degree 3 is acyclically edge colorable using at most four colors. This result is tight since all edge maximal non-regular connected graphs of maximum degree 3 require four colors.

Four new 5-aminoisophthalates of cobalt and nickel have been prepared employing hydro/solvothermal methods: [Co2(C8H5NO4)2(C4H4N2)(H2O)2]·3H2O (I), [Ni2(C8H5NO4)2(C4H4N2)(H2O)2]·3H2O (II), [Co2(H2O)(μ3-OH)2(C8H5NO4)] (III), and [Ni2(H2O)(μ3-OH)2(C8H5NO4)] (IV). Compounds I and II are isostructural, having anion-deficient CdCl2 related layers bridged by a pyrazine ligand, giving rise to a bilayer arrangement. Compounds III and IV have one-dimensional M−O(H)−M chains connected by the 5-aminoisophthalate units forming a three-dimensional structure. The coordinated as well as the lattice water molecules of I and II could be removed and inserted by simple heating−cooling cycles under the atmospheric conditions. The removal of the coordinated water molecule is accompanied by changes in the coordination environment around the M2+ (M = Co, Ni) and color of the samples (purple to blue, Co; green to dark yellow, Ni). This change has been examined by a variety of techniques that include in situ single crystal to single crystal transformation studies and in situ IR and UV−vis spectroscopic studies. Magnetic studies indicate antiferromagnetic behavior in I and II, a field-induced magnetism in III, and a canted antiferromagnetic behavior in IV.

The relay hypothesis [R. Nayak, S. Mitra-Kaushik, M.S. Shaila, Perpetuation of immunological memory: a relay hypothesis, Immunology 102 (2001) 387-395] was earlier proposed to explain perpetuation of immunological memory without requiring long lived memory cells or persisting antigen. This hypothesis envisaged cycles of interaction and proliferation of complementary idiotypic B cells (Burnet cells) and anti-idiotypic B cells (Jerne cells) as the primary reason for perpetuation of immunological memory. The presence of pepti-domimics of antigen in anti-idiotypic antibody and their presentation to antigen specific T cells was postulated to be primary reason for perpetuation of T cell memory. Using a viral hemagglutinin as a model, in this work, we demonstrate the presence of peptidomimics in the variable region of ail anti-idiotypic antibody capable of functionally mimicking the antigen derived peptides. A CD8(+) CTL clone was generated against the hemagglutinin protein which specifically responds to either peptidomimic synthesizing cells or peptidomimic pulsed antigen presenting cells. Thus, it appears reasonable that a population of activated antigen specific T cells is maintained in the body by presentation of peptidomimic through Jerne cells and other antigen presenting cells long after immunization. An acyclic edge coloring of a graph is a proper edge coloring such that there are no bichromatic cycles. The acyclic chromatic index of a graph is the minimum number k such that there is an acyclic edge coloring using k colors and is denoted by a'(G). It was conjectured by Alon, Suclakov and Zaks (and earlier by Fiamcik) that a'(G) <= Delta+2, where Delta = Delta(G) denotes the maximum degree of the graph. Alon et al. also raised the question whether the complete graphs of even order are the only regular graphs which require Delta+2 colors to be acyclically edge colored. In this article, using a simple counting argument we observe not only that this is not true, but in fact all d-regular graphs with 2n vertices and d>n, requires at least d+2 colors. We also show that a'(K-n,K-n) >= n+2, when n is odd using a more non-trivial argument. (Here K-n,K-n denotes the complete bipartite graph with n vertices on each side.) This lower bound for Kn,n can be shown to be tight for some families of complete bipartite graphs and for small values of n. We also infer that for every d, n such that d >= 5, n >= 2d+3 and dn even, there exist d-regular graphs which require at least d+2-colors to be acyclically edge colored. The performance of exfoliated graphite (EG)–ruthenium oxide (RuOx) composites as binderless electrodes is evaluated for electrochemical capacitors (ECs). A composite of EG–RuOx is prepared by a modified sol–gel process. The material is characterized using X-ray diffraction and microscopy. Electrochemical capacitors with the composite electrodes in the presence of aqueous sulfuric acid (H2SO4) electrolyte are evaluated using voltammetry, impedance and charge–discharge studies. Cyclic voltammetry reveals very stable current–voltage behaviour up to several thousands of cycles, as well as high specific capacitances, e.g., a few hundreds of farads per gram for the composite that contains 16.5 wt.% RuOx.

In this paper we consider the problems of computing a minimum co-cycle basis and a minimum weakly fundamental co-cycle basis of a directed graph G. A co-cycle in G corresponds to a vertex partition (S,V ∖ S) and a { − 1,0,1} edge incidence vector is associated with each co-cycle. The vector space over ℚ generated by these vectors is the co-cycle space of G. Alternately, the co-cycle space is the orthogonal complement of the cycle space of G. The minimum co-cycle basis problem asks for a set of co-cycles that span the co-cycle space of G and whose sum of weights is minimum. Weakly fundamental co-cycle bases are a special class of co-cycle bases, these form a natural superclass of strictly fundamental co-cycle bases and it is known that computing a minimum weight strictly fundamental co-cycle basis is NP-hard. We show that the co-cycle basis corresponding to the cuts of a Gomory-Hu tree of the underlying undirected graph of G is a minimum co-cycle basis of G and it is also weakly fundamental.

Biogeochemical and hydrological cycles are currently studied on a small experimental forested watershed (4.5 km(2)) in the semi-humid South India. This paper presents one of the first data referring to the distribution and dynamics of a widespread red soil (Ferralsols and Chromic Luvisols) and black soil (Vertisols and Vertic intergrades) cover, and its possible relationship with the recent development of the erosion process. The soil map was established from the observation of isolated soil profiles and toposequences, and surveys of soil electromagnetic conductivity (EM31, Geonics Ltd), lithology and vegetation. The distribution of the different parts of the soil cover in relation to each other was used to establish the dynamics and chronological order of formation. Results indicate that both topography and lithology (gneiss and amphibolite) have influenced the distribution of the soils. At the downslope, the following parts of the soil covers were distinguished: i) red soil system, ii) black soil system, iii) bleached horizon at the top of the black soil and iv) bleached sandy saprolite at the base of the black soil. The red soil is currently transforming into black soil and the transformation front is moving upslope. In the bottom part of the slope, the chronology appears to be the following: black soil > bleached horizon at the top of the black soil > streambed > bleached horizon below the black soil. It appears that the development of the drainage network is a recent process, which was guided by the presence of thin black soil with a vertic horizon less than 2 in deep. Three distinctive types of erosional landforms have been identified: 1. rotational slips (Type 1); 2. a seepage erosion (Type 2) at the top of the black soil profile; 3. A combination of earthflow and sliding in the non-cohesive saprolite of the gneiss occurs at midslope (Type 3). Types 1 and 2 erosion are mainly occurring downslope and are always located at the intersection between the streambed and the red soil-black soil contact. Neutron probe monitoring, along an area vulnerable to erosion types 1 and 2, indicates that rotational slips are caused by a temporary watertable at the base of the black soil and within the sandy bleached saprolite, which behaves as a plane of weakness. The watertable is induced by the ephemeral watercourse. Erosion type 2 is caused by seepage of a perched watertable, which occurs after swelling and closing of the cracks of the vertic clay horizon and within a light textured and bleached horizon at the top of black soil. Type 3 erosion is not related to the red soil-black soil system but is caused by the seasonal seepage of saturated throughflow in the sandy saprolite of the gneiss occurring at midslope. We consider the problem of computing an approximate minimum cycle basis of an undirected edge-weighted graph G with m edges and n vertices; the extension to directed graphs is also discussed. In this problem, a {0,1} incidence vector is associated with each cycle and the vector space over F-2 generated by these vectors is the cycle space of G. A set of cycles is called a cycle basis of G if it forms a basis for its cycle space. A cycle basis where the sum of the weights of the cycles is minimum is called a minimum cycle basis of G. Cycle bases of low weight are useful in a number of contexts, e.g. the analysis of electrical networks, structural engineering, chemistry, and surface reconstruction. We present two new algorithms to compute an approximate minimum cycle basis. For any integer k >= 1, we give (2k - 1)-approximation algorithms with expected running time 0(kmn(1+2/k) + mn((1+1/k)(omega-1))) and deterministic running time 0(n(3+2/k)), respectively. Here omega is the best exponent of matrix multiplication. It is presently known that omega < 2.376. Both algorithms are o(m(omega)) for dense graphs. This is the first time that any algorithm which computes sparse cycle bases with a guarantee drops below the Theta(m(omega)) bound. We also present a 2-approximation algorithm with O(m(omega) root n log n) expected running time, a linear time 2-approximation algorithm for planar graphs and an O(n(3)) time 2.42-approximation algorithm for the complete Euclidean graph in the plane.
