We have imaged the H92alpha and H75alpha radio recombination line (RRL) emissions from the starburst galaxy NGC 253 with a resolution of similar to4 pc. The peak of the RRL emission at both frequencies coincides with the unresolved radio nucleus. Both lines observed toward the nucleus are extremely wide, with FWHMs of similar to200 km s(-1). Modeling the RRL and radio continuum data for the radio nucleus shows that the lines arise in gas whose density is similar to10(4) cm(-3) and mass is a few thousand M., which requires an ionizing flux of (6-20) x 10(51) photons s(-1). We consider a supernova remnant (SNR) expanding in a dense medium, a star cluster, and also an active galactic nucleus (AGN) as potential ionizing sources. Based on dynamical arguments, we rule out an SNR as a viable ionizing source. A star cluster model is considered, and the dynamics of the ionized gas in a stellar-wind driven structure are investigated. Such a model is only consistent with the properties of the ionized gas for a cluster younger than similar to10(5) yr. The existence of such a young cluster at the nucleus seems improbable. The third model assumes the ionizing source to be an AGN at the nucleus. In this model, it is shown that the observed X-ray flux is too weak to account for the required ionizing photon flux. However, the ionization requirement can be explained if the accretion disk is assumed to have a big blue bump in its spectrum. Hence, we favor an AGN at the nucleus as the source responsible for ionizing the observed RRLs. A hybrid model consisting of an inner advection-dominated accretion flow disk and an outer thin disk is suggested, which could explain the radio, UV, and X-ray luminosities of the nucleus.

Pre-whitening techniques are employed in blind correlation detection of additive spread spectrum watermarks in audio signals to reduce the host signal interference. A direct deterministic whitening (DDW) scheme is derived in this paper from the frequency domain analysis of the time domain correlation process. Our experimental studies reveal that, the Savitzky-Golay Whitening (SGW), which is otherwise inferior to DDW technique, performs better when the audio signal is predominantly lowpass. The novelty of this paper lies in exploiting the complementary nature to the two whitening techniques to obtain a hybrid whitening (HbW) scheme. In the hybrid scheme the DDW and SGW techniques are selectively applied, based on short time spectral characteristics of the audio signal. The hybrid scheme extends the reliability of watermark detection to a wider range of audio signals.

In this paper, a model for composite beam with embedded de-lamination is developed using the wavelet based spectral finite element (WSFE) method particularly for damage detection using wave propagation analysis. The simulated responses are used as surrogate experimental results for the inverse problem of detection of damage using wavelet filtering. The WSFE technique is very similar to the fast fourier transform (FFT) based spectral finite element (FSFE) except that it uses compactly supported Daubechies scaling function approximation in time. Unlike FSFE formulation with periodicity assumption, the wavelet-based method allows imposition of initial values and thus is free from wrap around problems. This helps in analysis of finite length undamped structures, where the FSFE method fails to simulate accurate response. First, numerical experiments are performed to study the effect of de-lamination on the wave propagation characteristics. The responses are simulated for different de-lamination configurations for both broad-band and narrow-band excitations. Next, simulated responses are used for damage detection using wavelet analysis.

A novel PCR based assay was devised to specifically detect contamination of any Salmonella serovar in milk, fruit juice and ice-cream without pre-enrichment. This method utilizes primers against hilA gene which is conserved in all Salmonella serovars and absent from the close relatives of Salmonella. An optimized protocol, in terms time and money, is provided for the reduction of PCR contaminants from milk, ice-cream and juice through the use of routine laboratory chemicals. The simplicity, efficiency (time taken 3-4 h) and sensitivity (to about 5-10 CFU/ml) of this technique confers a unique advantage over other previously used time consuming detection techniques. This technique does not involve pre-enrichment of the samples or extensive sample processing, which was a pre-requisite in most of the other reported studies. Hence, this assay can be ideal for adoption, after further fine tuning, by food quality control for timely detection of Salmonella contamination as well as other food-borne pathogens (with species specific primers) in food especially milk, ice-cream and fruit juice. This paper deals with surface profilometry, where we try to detect a periodic structure, hidden in randomness using the matched filter method of analysing the intensity of light, scattered from the surface. From the direct problem of light scattering from a composite rough surface of the above type, we find that the detectability of the periodic structure can be hindered by the randomness, being dependent on the correlation function of the random part. In our earlier works, we had concentrated mainly on the Cauchy-type correlation function for the rough part. In the present work, we show that this technique can determine the periodic structure of different kinds of correlation functions of the roughness, including Cauchy, Gaussian etc. We study the detection by the matched filter method as the nature of the correlation function is varied.

This paper reports, the Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) studies and structure elucidation of compounds isolated from the fruit extract of Moringa oleifera and also deals with their possible effects on some bacterial strains viz. Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The extract was found to be active against all four microorganisms used. Extent of inhibitory effect of extract was assessed at different concentrations of 25, 50, 75 mg/ml by measuring diameter of inhibition zone (DIZ). Our results clearly showed that the 75 mg/ml concentration of the extract had 14, 12 and 18 mm of the DIZ against Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 14 mm with 50 mg/ml concentration against Escherichia coli. The results were compared with the standard antibiotic `ampicillin' of 1 mg/ml concentration. LIBS was recorded with high power pulsed laser beam from Nd: YAG Laser (Continuum Surelite III-10), focused on the surface of the material, which was in liquid form, to generate plasma on the surface of the sample. LIBS data clearly demonstrate the presence of trace elements, magnesium and iron, in high concentration in the extract. Whereas, from the phytochemical profile reveals the presence of two new compounds, S-ethyl-N-{4-[(alpha-L-rhamnosyloxy) benzyl]} thiocarbamate and 2-acetoxy {4-[(2',3',4'-tri-O-acetyl-alpha-L-rhamnosyloxy) benzyl]} acetonitrile as the major constituents. This study is the first report on synergetic effect of the phytoconstituents and certain set of elements present in their defined role in bacterial management against different bacterial strains.

Graphene's nano-dimensional nature and excellent electron transfer properties underlie its electrocatalytic behavior towards certain substances. In this light, we have used graphene in the electrochemical detection of bisphenol A. Graphene sheets were produced via soft chemistry route involving graphite oxidation and chemical reduction. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy were used for the characterization of the as-synthesized graphene. Graphene exhibited amorphous structure in comparison with pristine graphite from XRD spectra. FTIR showed that graphene exhibits OH and COOH groups due to incomplete reduction. Raman spectroscopy revealed that multi-layered graphene was produced due to low intensity of the 2D-peak. Glassy carbon electrode was modified with graphene by a simple drop and dry method. Cyclic voltammetry was used to study the electrochemical properties of the prepared graphene-modified glassy carbon electrode using potassium ferricyanide as a redox probe. The prepared graphene- modified glassy carbon electrode exhibited more facile electron kinetics and enhanced current of about 75% when compared to the unmodified glassy carbon electrode. The modified electrode was used for the detection of bisphenol A. Under the optimum conditions, the oxidation peak current of bisphenol A varied linearly with concentration over a wide range of 5 x 10(-8) mol L-1 to 1 x 10(-6) mol L-1 and the detection limit of this method was as low as 4.689 x 10(-8) M. This method was also employed to determine bisphenol A in a real sample

We report on the Lamb wave type guided wave propagation in honeycomb core sandwich structures. An experimental study supported by theoretical evaluation of the guided wave characteristics is presented that proves the potential of Lamb wave type guided wave for detection of damage in sandwich structures. A sandwich panel is fabricated with planar dimension of 600 mm x 600 mm, having a core thickness of 7 mm, cell size of 5 mm and 0.1 mm thick aluminum face sheets. Thin piezoelectric patch actuators and sensors are used to excite and sense a frequency band limited guided wave with a central frequency. A linear phased array of piezoelectric patch actuators is used to achieve higher signal strength and directivity. Group velocity dispersion curves and corresponding frequency response of sensed signal are obtained experimentally. Linearity between the excitation signal amplitude and the corresponding sensed signal amplitude is found for certain range of parameters. The nature of damping present in the sandwich panel is monitored by measuring the sensor signal amplitude at various different distances measured from the center of the linear phased array. Indentation and low velocity impact induced damages of increasing diameter covering several honeycomb cells are created. Crushing of honeycomb core with rupture of face sheet is observed while introducing the damage. The damages are then detected experimentally by pitch-catch interrogation with guided waves and wavelet transform of the sensed signal. Signal amplitudes are analyzed for various different sizes of damages to differentiate the damage size/severity. Monotonic changes in the sensor signal amplitude due to increase in the damage size has been established successfully. With this approach it is possible to locate and monitor the damages with the help of phased array and by tracking the wave packets scattered from the damages. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. In this study we present a colorimetric detection method for Cr (VI) in aqueous solution based on as synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) without surface functionalization. The method principle involves reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) by excess reductant present in as synthesized Ag NP dispersion, and subsequent aggregation of Ag NPs by Cr (III) leading to red-shift of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak. The UV-vis absorption spectra. Zeta potentials, dynamic light scattering measurements, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the aggregation of the Ag NPs. Under the optimized conditions, a good linear relationship (correlation coefficient r=0.981) was obtained between the ratio of the absorbance at 550 nm to that at 390 nm (A(550/390)) and the concentration of Cr (VI) over the range of 10(-3)-10(-9) M 50 mg/L to 50 ng/L]. The reported probe has a limit of detection down to 1 nM, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the lowest ever reported for the colorimetric detection of Cr (VI). Furthermore, a remarkable feature of this method is that it involves a simple technique exhibiting high selectivity to Cr (VI) over other tested heavy metal ions. (C) 2012 Elsevier BM. Solvents are known to affect the triplet state structure and reactivity. In this paper, we have employed time-resolved resonance Raman (TR3) spectroscopy to understand solvent-induced subtle structural changes in the lowest excited triplet state of thioxanthone. Density functional theory (DFT) combined with the self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) implicit solvation model has been used to calculate the vibrational frequencies in the solvents. Here, we report a unique observation of the coexistence of two triplets, which has been substantiated by the probe wavelength-dependent Raman experiments. The coexistence of two triplets has been further supported by photoreduction experiments carried out at various temperatures.
