A highly stable oscillator used in a quartz crystal thickness monitor for monitoring the rate of evaporation and total thickness of film during thin film deposition is reported. The design aspects of the oscillator and its long term stability, which enhances the reproducibility and the performance of the thickness monitor, are discussed. The stability of the oscillator at defined conditions is tested and compared with the conventional transistorized oscillator and the IC oscillator using inverters. The oscillator is coupled to the crystal monitor and its performance is studied in an evaporation system by evaporating different materials

In this paper, we present a low-complexity algorithm for detection in high-rate, non-orthogonal space-time block coded (STBC) large-multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems that achieve high spectral efficiencies of the order of tens of bps/Hz. We also present a training-based iterative detection/channel estimation scheme for such large STBC MIMO systems. Our simulation results show that excellent bit error rate and nearness-to-capacity performance are achieved by the proposed multistage likelihood ascent search (M-LAS) detector in conjunction with the proposed iterative detection/channel estimation scheme at low complexities. The fact that we could show such good results for large STBCs like 16 X 16 and 32 X 32 STBCs from Cyclic Division Algebras (CDA) operating at spectral efficiencies in excess of 20 bps/Hz (even after accounting for the overheads meant for pilot based training for channel estimation and turbo coding) establishes the effectiveness of the proposed detector and channel estimator. We decode perfect codes of large dimensions using the proposed detector. With the feasibility of such a low-complexity detection/channel estimation scheme, large-MIMO systems with tens of antennas operating at several tens of bps/Hz spectral efficiencies can become practical, enabling interesting high data rate wireless applications.

We consider the problem of transmission of correlated discrete alphabet sources over a Gaussian Multiple Access Channel (GMAC). A distributed bit-to-Gaussian mapping is proposed which yields jointly Gaussian codewords. This can guarantee lossless transmission or lossy transmission with given distortions, if possible. The technique can be extended to the system with side information at the encoders and decoder.

The flow resistance of an alluvial channel flow is not only affected by the Reynolds number and the roughness conditions but also the Froude number. Froude number is the most basic parameter in the case of the alluvial channel, thus effect of Froude number on resistance to flow should be considered in the formulation of the friction factor, which is not in the case of present available resistance equations. At present, no generally acceptable quantitative description of the effects of the Froude number on hydraulic resistance has been developed. Metamodeling technique, which is particularly useful in modeling a complex processes or where knowledge of the physics is limited, is presented as a tool complimentary to modeling friction factor in alluvial channels. Present work uses, a radial basis metamodel, which is a type of neural network modeling, to find the effect of Froude number on the flow resistance. Based on the experimental data taken from different sources, it has been found that the predicting capability of the present model is on acceptable level. Present work also tries in formulating an empirical equation for resistance in alluvial channel comprising all the three majorm, parameters, namely, roughness parameter, Froude number and Reynolds number. We consider the problem of transmission of several discrete sources over a multiple access channel (MAC) with side information at the sources and the decoder. Source-channel separation does not hold for this channel. Sufficient conditions are provided for transmission of sources with a given distortion. The channel could have continuous alphabets (Gaussian MAC is a special case). Various previous results are obtained as special cases.

Average-delay optimal scheduflng of messages arriving to the transmitter of a point-to-point channel is considered in this paper. We consider a discrete time batch-arrival batch-service queueing model for the communication scheme, with service time that may be a function of batch size. The question of delay optimality is addressed within the semi-Markov decision-theoretic framework. Approximations to the average-delay optimal policy are obtained.

Transmembrane channel-forming polypeptides can function as uncouplers of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. The observed effects are dependent on the phosphate ion (Pi) concentration in the medium. At low Pi (2.5 mM) the order of uncoupling efficiencies is gramicidin A much greater than alamethicin greater than tetraacetyl melittin greater than melittin. The remarkably high activity of gramicidin A suggests insertion of preformed channel dimers into the membrane. It is also suggested that lipid phase association of peptides is necessary in the other cases. At Pi = 100 mM inhibitory effects are observed for alamethicin and tetraacetyl melittin. Less pronounced inhibition is seen for melittin, while no such effect is noted for gramicidin A. The site of inhibition is shown to be complex IV, and the differences in the behavior of the peptides are rationalized in terms of channel structures.

Zervamicin-IIB (Zrv-IIB) is a 16 residue peptaibol which forms voltage-activated, multiple conductance level channels in planar lipid bilayers. A molecular model of Zrv-IIB channels is presented. The structure of monomeric Zrv-IIB is based upon the crystal structure of Zervamicin-Leu. The helical backbone is kinked by a hydroxyproline residue at position 10. Zrv-IIB channels are modelled as helix bundles of from 4 to 8 parallel helices surrounding a central pore. The monomers are packed with their C-terminal helical segments in close contact, and the bundles are stabilized by hydrogen bonds between glutamine 11 and hydroxyproline 10 of adjacent helices. Interaction energy profiles for movement of three different probes species (K+, Cl- and water) through the central pore are analyzed. The conformations of: (a) the sidechain of glutamine 3; (b) the hydroxyl group of hydroxyproline 10; and (c) the C-terminal hydroxyl group are "optimized" in order to maximize favourable interactions between the channel and the probes, resulting in favourable interaction energy profiles for all three. This suggests that conformational flexibility of polar sidechains enables the channel lining to mimic an aqueous environment.

We consider an optimal power and rate scheduling problem for a multiaccess fading wireless channel with the objective of minimising a weighted sum of mean packet transmission delay subject to a peak power constraint. The base station acts as a controller which, depending upon the buffer lengths and the channel state of each user, allocates transmission rate and power to individual users. We assume perfect channel state information at the transmitter and the receiver. We also assume a Markov model for the fading and packet arrival processes. The policy obtained represents a form of Indexability.

Different seismic hazard components pertaining to Bangalore city, namely soil overburden thickness, effective shear-wave velocity, factor of safety against liquefaction potential, peak ground acceleration at the seismic bedrock, site response in terms of amplification factor, and the predominant frequency, has been individually evaluated. The overburden thickness distribution, predominantly in the range of 5-10 m in the city, has been estimated through a sub-surface model from geotechnical bore-log data. The effective shear-wave velocity distribution, established through Multi-channel Analysis of Surface Wave (MASW) survey and subsequent data interpretation through dispersion analysis, exhibits site class D (180-360 m/s), site class C (360-760 m/s), and site class B (760-1500 m/s) in compliance to the National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program (NEHRP) nomenclature. The peak ground acceleration has been estimated through deterministic approach, based on the maximum credible earthquake of M-W = 5.1 assumed to be nucleating from the closest active seismic source (Mandya-Channapatna-Bangalore Lineament). The 1-D site response factor, computed at each borehole through geotechnical analysis across the study region, is seen to be ranging from around amplification of one to as high as four times. Correspondingly, the predominant frequency estimated from the Fourier spectrum is found to be predominantly in range of 3.5-5.0 Hz. The soil liquefaction hazard assessment has been estimated in terms of factor of safety against liquefaction potential using standard penetration test data and the underlying soil properties that indicates 90% of the study region to be non-liquefiable. The spatial distributions of the different hazard entities are placed on a GIS platform and subsequently, integrated through analytical hierarchal process. The accomplished deterministic hazard map shows high hazard coverage in the western areas. The microzonation, thus, achieved is envisaged as a first-cut assessment of the site specific hazard in laying out a framework for higher order seismic microzonation as well as a useful decision support tool in overall land-use planning, and hazard management. In this paper, we demonstrate a way to impart severe plastic deformation to magnesium at room temperature to produce ultrafine grain size of similar to 250 nm through equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE). The strategy to deform magnesium at lower temperature or to achieve such grain sizes has been proposed as: (i) to obtain a suitable initial orientation with high Schmid factor for basal slip and low Schmid factor for pyramidal/prismatic slip; (ii) to take advantage of low stacking fault energy of basal and high stacking fault energies of prismatic/pyramidal planes in order to relatively work-harden the basal plane with respect to the pyramidal/prismatic plane; and (iii) to lower the temperature of deformation in steps, leading to continual refinement of grains, resulting in finer grain size. The experimental as well as simulated texture of ECAE-processed samples indicate that the deformation mechanism leading to ultrafine grain size is slip-dominated. The recrystallization mechanism during ECAE has been found to be orientation-dependent. (C) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this letter, we propose the design and simulation study of a novel transistor, called HFinFET, which is a hybrid of an HEMT and a FinFET, to obtain excellent performance and good OFF-state control. Followed by the description of the design, 3-D device simulation has been performed to predict the characteristics of the device. The device has been benchmarked against published state of the art HEMT as well as planar and nonplanar Si n-MOSFET data of comparable gate length using standard benchmarking techniques.

In this paper, we develop a novel auction algorithm for procuring wireless channel by a wireless node in a heterogeneous wireless network. We assume that the service providers of the heterogeneous wireless network are selfish and non-cooperative in the sense that they are only interested in maximizing their own utilities. The wireless user needs to procure wireless channels to execute multiple tasks. To solve the problem of the wireless user, we propose a reverse optimal (REVOPT) auction and derive an expression for the expected payment by the wireless user. The proposed auction mechanism REVOPT satisfies important game theoretic properties such as Bayesian incentive compatibility and individual rationality.
