Benzoyl phenyl urea, a class of insect growth regulator's acts by inhibiting chitin synthesis. Carvacrol, a naturally occurring monoterpenoid is an effective antifungal agent. We have structurally modified carvacrol (2-methyl-5-1-methylethyl] phenol) by introducing benzoylphenyl urea linkage. Two series of benzoylcarvacryl thiourea (BCTU, 4a-f) and benzoylcarvacryl urea (BCU, 5a-f) derivatives were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR and Mass spectroscopy. Derivatives 4b, 4d, 4e, 4f and 5d, 5f showed comparable insecticidal activity with the standard BPU lufenuron against Dysdercus koenigii. BCTU derivatives 4c, 4e and BCU 5c showed good antifungal activity against phytopathogenic fungi viz. Magnaporthe grisae, Fusarium oxysporum, Dreschlera oryzae; food spoilage yeasts viz. Debaromyces hansenii, Pichia membranifaciens; and human pathogens viz. Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans. Compounds 5d, 5e and 5f showed potent activity against human pathogens. Moderate and selective activity was observed for other compounds. All the synthesized compounds were non-haemolytic. These compounds have potential application in agriculture and medicine. A new hybrid five-level inverter topology with common-mode voltage (CMV) elimination for induction motor drive is proposed in this paper. This topology has only one dc source, and different voltage levels are generated by using this voltage source along with floating capacitors charged to asymmetrical voltage levels. The pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme employed in this topology balances the capacitor voltages at the required levels at any power factor and modulation index while eliminating the CMV. This inverter has good fault-tolerant capability as it can be operated in three-or two-level mode with CMV elimination, in case of any failure in the H-bridges. More voltage levels with CMV elimination can be realized from this topology but only in a limited range of modulation index and power factor. Extensive simulation is done to validate the PWM technique for CMV elimination and balancing of the capacitor voltages. The experimental verification of the proposed inverter-fed induction motor is carried out in the linear modulation and overmodulation regions. The steady-state and transient operations of the drive are verified. The dynamics of the capacitor voltage balancing is also tested. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed topology can be considered for industrial drive applications.

Dodecagonal (12-sided) space vector pulsewidth modulation (PWM) schemes are characterized by the complete absence of (6n +/- 1)th-order harmonics (for odd n) in the phase voltages, within the linear modulation range and beyond, including over-modulation. This paper presents a new topology suitable for the realization of such multilevel inverter schemes for induction motor (IM) drives, by cascading two-level inverters with flying-capacitor-inverter fed floating H-bridge cells. Now, any standard IM may be used to get the dodecagonal operation which hitherto was possible only with open-end winding IM. To minimize the current total harmonic distortion (THD), a strategy for synchronous PWM is also proposed. It is shown that the proposed method is capable of obtaining better THD figures, compared to conventional dodecagonal schemes. The topology and the PWM strategy are validated through analysis and subsequently verified experimentally.

Low-complexity near-optimal detection of large-MIMO signals has attracted recent research. Recently, we proposed a local neighborhood search algorithm, namely reactive tabu search (RTS) algorithm, as well as a factor-graph based belief propagation (BP) algorithm for low-complexity large-MIMO detection. The motivation for the present work arises from the following two observations on the above two algorithms: i) Although RTS achieved close to optimal performance for 4-QAM in large dimensions, significant performance improvement was still possible for higher-order QAM (e.g., 16-, 64-QAM). ii) BP also achieved near-optimal performance for large dimensions, but only for {±1} alphabet. In this paper, we improve the large-MIMO detection performance of higher-order QAM signals by using a hybrid algorithm that employs RTS and BP. In particular, motivated by the observation that when a detection error occurs at the RTS output, the least significant bits (LSB) of the symbols are mostly in error, we propose to first reconstruct and cancel the interference due to bits other than LSBs at the RTS output and feed the interference cancelled received signal to the BP algorithm to improve the reliability of the LSBs. The output of the BP is then fed back to RTS for the next iteration. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than the RTS algorithm, and semi-definite relaxation (SDR) and Gaussian tree approximation (GTA) algorithms.

The incorporation of beta-amino acid residues into the antiparallel beta-strand segments of a multi-stranded beta-sheet peptide is demonstrated for a 19-residue peptide, Boc-LV(beta)FV(D)PGL(beta)FVVL(D)PGLVL(beta)FVV-OMe (BBH19). Two centrally positioned (D)Pro-Gly segments facilitate formation of a stable three-stranded beta-sheet, in which beta-phenylalanine ((beta)Phe) residues occur at facing positions 3, 8 and 17. Structure determination in methanol solution is accomplished by using NMR-derived restraints obtained from NOEs, temperature dependence of amide NH chemical shifts, rates of H/D exchange of amide protons and vicinal coupling constants. The data are consistent with a conformationally well-defined three-stranded beta-sheet structure in solution. Cross-strand interactions between (beta)Phe3/(beta)Phe17 and (beta)Phe3/Val15 residues define orientations of these side-chains. The observation of close contact distances between the side-chains on the N- and C-terminal strands of the three-stranded beta-sheet provides strong support for the designed structure. Evidence is presented for multiple side-chain conformations from an analysis of NOE data. An unusual observation of the disappearance of the Gly NH resonances upon prolonged storage in methanol is rationalised on the basis of a slow aggregation step, resulting in stacking of three-stranded beta-sheet structures, which in turn influences the conformational interconversion between type I' and type II' beta-turns at the two (D)Pro-Gly segments. Experimental evidence for these processes is presented. The decapeptide fragment Boc-LV(beta)FV(D)PGL(beta)FVV-OMe (BBH10), which has been previously characterized as a type I' beta-turn nucleated hairpin, is shown to favour a type II' beta-turn conformation in solution, supporting the occurrence of conformational interconversion at the turn segments in these hairpin and sheet structures.

The blending of perfluorinated bile ester derivatives with the gelator 2,3-didecyloxyanthracene (DDOA) yields a new class of hybrid organo- and aerogels displaying a combination of optical and mechanical properties that differ from those of pure gels. Indeed, the nanofibers constituting the hybrid organogels emit polarized blue light and display dichroic near-UV absorption via the achiral DDOA molecules, thanks to their association with a chiral bile ester. Moreover, the thermal stability and the mechanical yield stress of the mixed organogels in DMSO are enhanced for blends of DDOA with the deoxycholic gelator (DC11) having a C-11 chain, as compared to the pure components' gels. When the chain length of the ester is increased to C-13 (DC13) a novel compound for aerogel formation directly in scCO(2) is obtained under the studied conditions. A mixture of this compound with DDOA is also able to gelate scCO(2) leading to novel composite aerogel materials. As revealed by SAXS measurements, the hybrid and the pure DDOA and DC13 aerogels display cell parameters that are very similar. These SAXS experiments suggest that crystallographic conditions are very favorable for the growth of hybrid molecular arrangements in which DDOA and DC13 units could be interchanged. Specific molecular interactions between two components are not always a pre-requisite condition for the formation of a hybrid nanostructured material in which the components mutually induce properties.

Energy harvesting sensor (EHS) nodes provide an attractive and green solution to the problem of limited lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Unlike a conventional node that uses a non-rechargeable battery and dies once it runs out of energy, an EHS node can harvest energy from the environment and replenish its rechargeable battery. We consider hybrid WSNs that comprise of both EHS and conventional nodes; these arise when legacy WSNs are upgraded or due to EHS deployment cost issues. We compare conventional and hybrid WSNs on the basis of a new and insightful performance metric called k-outage duration, which captures the inability of the nodes to transmit data either due to lack of sufficient battery energy or wireless fading. The metric overcomes the problem of defining lifetime in networks with EHS nodes, which never die but are occasionally unable to transmit due to lack of sufficient battery energy. It also accounts for the effect of wireless channel fading on the ability of the WSN to transmit data. We develop two novel, tight, and computationally simple bounds for evaluating the k-outage duration. Our results show that increasing the number of EHS nodes has a markedly different effect on the k-outage duration than increasing the number of conventional nodes.

Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets obtained by exfoliating inorganic layered crystals have emerged as a new class of materials with unique attributes. One of the critical challenges is to develop robust and versatile methods for creating new nanostructures from these 2D-nanosheets. Here we report the delamination of layered materials that belonging to two different classes - the cationic clay, montmorillonite, and the anionic clay, hydrotalcite - by intercalation of appropriate ionic surfactants followed by dispersion in a non-polar solvent. The solids are delaminated to single layers of atomic thickness with the ionic surfactants remaining tethered to the inorganic and consequently the nanosheets are electrically neutral. We then show that when dispersions of the two solids are mixed the exfoliated sheets self-assemble as a new layered solid with periodically alternating hydrotalcite and montmorillonite layers. The procedure outlined here is easily extended to other layered solids for creating new superstructures from 2D-nanosheets by self-assembly.

Polyvinyl butyral/functionalized mesoporous silica hybrid composite films have been fabricated by solution casting technique with various weight percentages of functionalized silica. A polyol (tripentaerythritol-electron rich component), which acts as an electron donor to the polymer backbone, was added to enhance the conductivity. The prepared composites were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and the morphology was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. Dielectric properties of these freestanding composites were studied using the two-probe method. The dielectric constant and impedance value decreased with the increase in applied frequency as well as with the increase in functionalized silica content in the polyvinyl butyral matrix. An increase in conductivity of the PVB/functionalized silica composites was also observed. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In Mycobacterium tuberculosis Rv1027c-Rv1028c genes are predicted to encode KdpDE two component system, which is highly conserved across all bacterial species. Here, we show that the system is functionally active and KdpD sensor kinase undergoes autophosphorylation and transfers phosphoryl group to KdpE, response regulator protein. We identified His(642) and Asp(52) as conserved phosphorylation sites in KdpD and KdpE respectively and by SPR analysis confirmed the physical interaction between them. KdpD was purified with prebound divalent ions and their importance in phosphorylation was established using protein refolding and ion chelation approaches. Genetically a single transcript encoded both KdpD and KdpE proteins. Overall, we report that M. tuberculosis KdpDE system operates like a canonical two component system. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. Novel switching sequences have been proposed recently for a neutral-point-clamped three-level inverter, controlled effectively as an equivalent two-level inverter. It is shown that the four novel sequences can be grouped into two pairs of sequences. Using each pair of sequences, a hybrid pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique is proposed, which deploys the two sequences in appropriate spatial regions to reduce the current ripple. Further, a third hybrid PWM technique is proposed which uses all the five sequences (including the conventional sequence) in appropriate spatial regions. Each proposed hybrid PWM is shown, both analytically and experimentally, to outperform its constituent PWM methods in terms of harmonic distortion. In particular, the third proposed hybrid PWM reduces the total harmonic distortion considerably at low- and high-speed ranges of a constant volts-per-hertz induction motor drive, compared to centered space vector PWM.

Hybrid nanocomposites of polycaprolactone (PCL) with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and silver nanoparticles (nAg) were prepared by melt mixing. Synergetic effect of the two nanofillers (MWNT and nAg) in PCL matrix was evaluated for dielectric and antibacterial properties. Dielectric results showed that the addition of nAg as filler in PCL matrix (PCL/nAg) had no effect on conductivity, whereas addition of MWNT in PCL matrix (PCL/MWNT) caused a sharp increase in conductivity of PCL. Interestingly, the hybrid nanocomposite (PCL/MWNT/nAg) incorporating MWNT and nAg also exhibited high electrical conductivity. The hybrid composite was found to have antibacterial property similar to that of PCL/nAg composite for lower loading of nAg. This study demonstrates that the synergetic interaction of the nanofillers in the hybrid nanocomposite improves both electrical conductivity and antibacterial properties of PCL.

Innovative vaccines against typhoid and other Salmonella diseases that are safe, effective, and inexpensive are urgently needed. In order to address this need, buoyant, self-adjuvating gas vesicle nanoparticles (GVNPs) from the halophilic archaeon Halobacterium sp. NRC-1 were bioengineered to display the highly conserved Salmonella enterica antigen SopB, a secreted inosine phosphate effector protein injected by pathogenic bacteria during infection into the host cell. Two highly conserved sopB gene segments near the 3'-coding region, named sopB4 and B5, were each fused to the gvpC gene, and resulting GVNPs were purified by centrifugally accelerated flotation. Display of SopB4 and B5 antigenic epitopes on GVNPs was established by Western blotting analysis using antisera raised against short synthetic peptides of SopB. Immunostimulatory activities of the SopB4 and B5 nanoparticles were tested by intraperitoneal administration of recombinant GVNPs to BALB/c mice which had been immunized with S. enterica serovar Typhimurium 14028 Delta pmrG-HM-D (DV-STM-07), a live attenuated vaccine strain. Proinflammatory cytokines IFN-gamma, IL-2, and IL-9 were significantly induced in mice boosted with SopB5-GVNPs, consistent with a robust Th1 response. After challenge with virulent S. enterica serovar Typhimurium 14028, bacterial burden was found to be diminished in spleen of mice boosted with SopB4-GVNPs and absent or significantly diminished in liver, mesenteric lymph node, and spleen of mice boosted with SopB5-GVNPs, indicating that the C-terminal portions of SopB displayed on GVNPs elicit a protective response to Salmonella infection in mice. SopB antigen-GVNPs were found to be stable at elevated temperatures for extended periods without refrigeration in Halobacterium cells. The results all together show that bioengineered GVNPs are likely to represent a valuable platform for the development of improved vaccines against Salmonella diseases. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) pose a high risk of exposure to the natural environment owing to their extensive usage in various consumer products. In the present study we attempted to understand the harmful effect of AgNPs at environmentally relevant low concentration levels (<= 1 ppm) towards two different freshwater bacterial isolates and their consortium. The standard plate count assay suggested that the AgNPs were toxic towards the fresh water bacterial isolates as well as the consortium, though toxicity was significantly reduced for the cells in the consortium. The oxidative stress assessment and membrane permeability studies corroborated with the toxicity data. The detailed electron microscopic studies suggested the cell degrading potential of the AgNPs, and the FT-IR studies confirmed the involvement of the surface groups in the toxic effects. No significant ion leaching from the AgNPs was observed at the applied concentration levels signifying the dominant role of the particle size, and size distribution in bacterial toxicity. The reduced toxicity for the cells in the consortium than the individual isolates has major significance in further studies on the ecotoxicity of the AgNPs. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. The highly modular nature of protein kinases generates diverse functional roles mediated by evolutionary events such as domain recombination, insertion and deletion of domains. Usually domain architecture of a kinase is related to the subfamily to which the kinase catalytic domain belongs. However outlier kinases with unusual domain architectures serve in the expansion of the functional space of the protein kinase family. For example, Src kinases are made-up of SH2 and SH3 domains in addition to the kinase catalytic domain. A kinase which lacks these two domains but retains sequence characteristics within the kinase catalytic domain is an outlier that is likely to have modes of regulation different from classical src kinases. This study defines two types of outlier kinases: hybrids and rogues depending on the nature of domain recombination. Hybrid kinases are those where the catalytic kinase domain belongs to a kinase subfamily but the domain architecture is typical of another kinase subfamily. Rogue kinases are those with kinase catalytic domain characteristic of a kinase subfamily but the domain architecture is typical of neither that subfamily nor any other kinase subfamily. This report provides a consolidated set of such hybrid and rogue kinases gleaned from six eukaryotic genomes-S. cerevisiae, D. melanogaster, C. elegans, M. musculus, T. rubripes and H. sapiens-and discusses their functions. The presence of such kinases necessitates a revisiting of the classification scheme of the protein kinase family using full length sequences apart from classical classification using solely the sequences of kinase catalytic domains. The study of these kinases provides a good insight in engineering signalling pathways for a desired output. Lastly, identification of hybrids and rogues in pathogenic protozoa such as P. falciparum sheds light on possible strategies in host-pathogen interactions.
