Solar distillation can be used to produce potable water from contaminated water. However, studies show that ions such as F(-) and NO(3)(-) occur in distillates from solar stills. In order to understand the reasons for this behavior, imaging and distillation experiments were conducted. White dots were seen in the vapor space above the interface of hot water poured into containers. The concentrations of various ions such as F(-) and SO(4)(2-) in the distillates from thermal and solar distillation experiments were roughly comparable when the feed consisted of deionized water and also solutions having fluoride concentrations of 100 and 10 000 mg/L. These observations suggest that aerosols enter the distillation setup through leaks and provide nuclei for the condensation of water vapor. The water-soluble component of aerosols dissolves in the drops formed, and some of the drops are transferred to the distillate by buoyancy-driven convection.

The GasBench II peripheral along with MAT 253 combination provides a more sensitive platform for the determination of water isotope ratios. Here, we examined the role of adsorbed moisture within the gas chromatography (GC) column of the GasBench II on measurement uncertainties. The uncertainty in O-18/O-16 ratio measurements is determined by several factors, including the presence of water in the GC. The contamination of GC with water originating from samples as water vapour over a longer timeframe is a critical factor in determining the reproducibility of O-18/O-16 ratios in water samples. The shift in isotope ratios observed in the experiment under dry and wet conditions correlates strongly with the retention time of analyte CO2, indicating the effect of accumulated moisture. Two possible methods to circumvent or minimise the effect of adsorbed water on isotope ratios are presented here. The proposed methodology includes either the regular baking of the GC column at a higher temperature (120 degrees C) after analysis of a batch of 32 sample entries or conducting the experiment at a low GC column temperature (22.5 degrees C). The effects of water contamination on long-term reproducibility of reference water, with and without baking protocol, have been described.

The structure of the hydrogen bond network is a key element for understanding water's thermodynamic and kinetic anomalies. While ambient water is strongly believed to be a uniform, continuous hydrogen-bonded liquid, there is growing consensus that supercooled water is better described in terms of distinct domains with either a low-density ice-like structure or a high-density disordered one. We evidenced two distinct rotational mobilities of probe molecules in interstitial supercooled water of polycrystalline ice Banerjee D, et al. (2009) ESR evidence for 2 coexisting liquid phases in deeply supercooled bulk water. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 106: 11448-11453]. Here we show that, by increasing the confinement of interstitial water, the mobility of probe molecules, surprisingly, increases. We argue that loose confinement allows the presence of ice-like regions in supercooled water, whereas a tighter confinement yields the suppression of this ordered fraction and leads to higher fluidity. Compelling evidence of the presence of ice-like regions is provided by the probe orientational entropy barrier which is set, through hydrogen bonding, by the configuration of the surrounding water molecules and yields a direct measure of the configurational entropy of the same. We find that, under loose confinement of supercooled water, the entropy barrier surmounted by the slower probe fraction exceeds that of equilibrium water by the melting entropy of ice, whereas no increase of the barrier is observed under stronger confinement. The lower limit of metastability of supercooled water is discussed.

A molecular dynamics simulation study of aqueous solution of LiCl is reported as a function of pressure. Experimental measurements of conductivity of Li+ ion as a function of pressure shows an increase in conductivity with pressure. Our simulations are able to reproduce the observed trend in conductivity. A number of relevant properties have been computed in order to understand the reasons for the increase in conductivity with pressure. These include radial distribution function, void and neck distributions, hydration or coordination numbers, diffusivity, velocity autocorrelation functions, angles between ion-oxygen and dipole of water as well as OH vector, mean residence time for water in the hydration shell, etc. These show that the increase in pressure acts as a structure breaker. The decay of the self part of the intermediate scattering function at small wave number k shows a bi-exponential decay at 1 bar which changes to single exponential decay at higher pressures. The k dependence of the ratio of the self part of the full width at half maximum of the dynamic structure factor to 2Dk(2) exhibits trends which suggest that the void structure of water is playing a role. These support the view that the changes in void and neck distributions in water can account for changes in conductivity or diffusivity of Li+ with pressure. These results can be understood in terms of the levitation effect. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4756909]

A new bis-indolyl-based colorimetric probe has been synthesized. This allows a Michael-type adduct formation for the detection of cyanide ions. The probe shows a remarkable color change from red to colorless upon addition of the cyanide ions in pure water. The cyanide ion reacts with the probe and removes the conjugation of the bis-indolyl moiety of the probe with that of the 4-substituted aromatic ring. This renders the probe colorless. The mechanism of the reaction of the probe with the cyanide ion was established by using 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and kinetic studies.

We present computer simulation study of two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR) of water confined in reverse micelles (RMs) of various sizes. The present study is motivated by the need to understand the altered dynamics of confined water by performing layerwise decomposition of water, with an aim to quantify the relative contributions of different layers water molecules to the calculated 2D-IR spectrum. The 0-1 transition spectra clearly show substantial elongation, due to in-homogeneous broadening and incomplete spectral diffusion, along the diagonal in the surface water layer of different sized RMs. Fitting of the frequency fluctuation correlation functions reveal that the motion of the surface water molecules is sub-diffusive and indicate the constrained nature of their dynamics. This is further supported by two peak nature of the angular analogue of van Hove correlation function. With increasing system size, the water molecules become more diffusive in nature and spectral diffusion almost completes in the central layer of the larger size RMs. Comparisons between experiments and simulations establish the correspondence between the spectral decomposition available in experiments with the spatial decomposition available in simulations. Simulations also allow a quantitative exploration of the relative role of water, sodium ions, and sulfonate head groups in vibrational dephasing. Interestingly, the negative cross correlation between force on oxygen and hydrogen of O-H bond in bulk water significantly decreases in the surface layer of each RM. This negative cross correlation gradually increases in the central water pool with increasing RMs size and this is found to be partly responsible for the faster relaxation rate of water in the central pool. A self assembled monolayer (SAM) of sodium oleate was generated on mild steel by the dip coating method. Formation of the SAM on mild steel was examined using Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (IRRAS) and contact angle measurements. The chemical and anticorrosive properties of the SAM were analyzed using different techniques. IRRAS and water contact angle data revealed the crystallinity and chemical stability of the SAM modified mild steel. The electrochemical measurements showed that the mild steel with the sodium oleate derived SAM exhibited better corrosion resistance in saline water. The effect of temperature and pH on the SAM formation and its anti corrosion ability was explored.

Cation sensing properties of the three positional isomers of rhodamine based sensors (1-3) are studied in water. The sensors differ only in the position of pyridine's nitrogen. The chemosensor 1, with pyridine nitrogen at ortho-position, showed a selective colorimetric detection of Cu(II) ions in water, at physiological pH 7.4 and also in medium containing BSA (bovine serum albumin) and blood serum. Notably the compound 2 and 3, with pyridine end located at meta-and para-positions did not show any color change with Cu(II) ions, although both the compounds showed turn-on change both in color and fluorescence with Hg(II) ions specifically. All the probes showed ratiometric changes with the specific metal ions. The changing position of nitrogen also changed the complexation pattern of the sensors with the metal ions. Probe 1 showed 2 : 1 complexation with Cu(II), whereas 2 and 3 showed 1 : 1 complexation with Hg(II) ions. The mechanism investigation showed that the change in color upon addition of metal ions is due to the ring-opening of the spirolactam ring of the probes. Cu(II) interacted with ligand 1 through a three-point interaction mode comprising carbonyl oxygen, amido nitrogen and pyridine nitrogen end. But in case of 2 and 3, Hg2+ only interacted through pyridine nitrogen ends. Quantitative estimation of Cu2+ and Hg2+ in complex biological media such as bovine albumin protein (BSA) and human blood serum were performed using these sensors. Rapid on-site detection as well as discrimination of these toxic ions was demonstrated using easily prepared portable test-strips.

Donor-acceptor-donor-structured thiophene derivative-based conducting polymer poly(7,9-dithiophene-2yl-8H-cyclopentaa]acenaphthalene-8-one) was chemically synthesized. This polymer was used to modify both glassy-carbon and carbon-paste electrode, which was used to detect lead(II) ions present in water in the range of 1 mM to 0.1 mu M. Cyclic voltammetry confirms the formation of the co-ordination complex between the soft segment of polymer and the dissolved lead ion. Anodic stripping voltammetry was carried out by the modified electrode to determine the lower limit of detection of dissolved lead(II) species in the solution. Differential adsorptive stripping and impedance measurements were also conducted to find the lowest possible response of the as-synthesized polymer to lead(II) ion in water. The electrochemical performance of the modified electrodes at different pH (4, 7 and 9) environments was carried out by stripping voltammetry, to get optimum sensitivity and stability under these conditions. Finally, interference analysis was carried out to detect the modified electrode's sensitivity towards lead ion affinity in water.

In the present study an analytical model has been presented to describe the transient temperature distribution and advancement of the thermal front generated due to the reinjection of heat depleted water in a heterogeneous geothermal reservoir. One dimensional heat transport equation in porous media with advection and longitudinal heat conduction has been solved analytically using Laplace transform technique in a semi infinite medium. The heterogeneity of the porous medium is expressed by the spatial variation of the flow velocity and the longitudinal effective thermal conductivity of the medium. A simpler solution is also derived afterwards neglecting the longitudinal conduction depending on the situation where the contribution to the transient heat transport phenomenon in the porous media is negligible. Solution for a homogeneous aquifer with constant values of the rock and fluid parameters is also derived with an aim to compare the results with that of the heterogeneous one. The effect of some of the parameters involved, on the transient heat transport phenomenon is assessed by observing the variation of the results with different magnitudes of those parameters. Results prove the heterogeneity of the medium, the flow velocity and the longitudinal conductivity to have great influence and porosity to have negligible effect on the transient temperature distribution. The well-known classical nucleation theory (CNT) for the free energy barrier towards formation of a nucleus of critical size of the new stable phase within the parent metastable phase fails to take into account the influence of other metastable phases having density/order intermediate between the parent metastable phase and the final stable phase. This lacuna can be more serious than capillary approximation or spherical shape assumption made in CNT. This issue is particularly significant in ice nucleation because liquid water shows rich phase diagram consisting of two (high and low density) liquid phases in supercooled state. The explanations of thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies of supercooled water often invoke the possible influence of a liquid-liquid transition between two metastable liquid phases. To investigate both the role of thermodynamic anomalies and presence of distinct metastable liquid phases in supercooled water on ice nucleation, we employ density functional theoretical approach to find nucleation free energy barrier in different regions of phase diagram. The theory makes a number of striking predictions, such as a dramatic lowering of nucleation barrier due to presence of a metastable intermediate phase and crossover in the dependence of free energy barrier on temperature near liquid-liquid critical point. These predictions can be tested by computer simulations as well as by controlled experiments. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Photocatalytic degradation of estriol (E3) in an aqueous medium was investigated in the presence of TiO2 microcrystallized glass plates. To begin with, transparent glasses associated with the composition 0.4BaO-0.4TiO(2)-B2O3 (BTBO) were fabricated by the conventional melt-quench technique and subsequently subjected to controlled heat treatment at an appropriate temperature to grow anatase TiO2 microcrystals in the glass matrix. The fabricated samples were subjected to differential scanning calorimetry. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy to obtain thermal, structural and microstructural details. The photocatalytic activity of glass samples for estriol degradation was monitored by fluorescence spectroscopy. The limit of detection for estriol using fluorescence spectroscopy was analyzed. The results showed that microcrystallized TiO2 glass composites have more photocatalytic activity than as quenched glass. The degradation rate coefficient of microcrystallized TiO2 glass composite (334.54 min(-1) m(-2)) was found to be ten times larger than that of the as-quenched BTBO glasses (37.74 min(-1) m(-2)) implying that the anatase phase of TiO2 in BTBO glasses was responsible for high photocatalytic activity of estriol degradation. An organic supramolecular ternary salt (gallic acid:isoniazid:water; GINZH) examined earlier for its proton conducting characteristics is observed to display step-like dielectric behavior across the structural phase transition mediated by loss of water of hydration at 389 K. The presence of hydration in the crystal lattice along with proton mobility between acid base pairs controls the ``ferroelectric like'' behavior until the phase transition temperature.

A study on self-assembly of anisotropically substituted penta-aryl fullerenes in water has been reported. The penta-phenol-substituted amphiphilic fullerene derivative C60Ph5(OH)(5)],exhibited self-assembled vesicular nanostructures in water under the experimental conditions. The size of the vesicles Was observed to depend upon the kinetics of self-assembly and could be varied from similar to 300 to similar to 70 nm. Our mechanistic study indicated that the self-assembly of C60Ph5(OH)(5) is driven by extensive intermolecular as well as water-mediated hydrogen :bonding along with fullerene-fullerene hydrophobic interaction in water. The cumulative effect of these interactions is responsible for the stability of vesicular structures even on the removal of solvent. The substitution of phenol with anisole resulted in different packing and interaction of the fullerene derivative, as Indicated in the molecular dynamics studies, thus resulting in different self-assembled nanostructures. The hollow vesicles were further encapsulated with a hydrophobic conjugated polymer and water-soluble dye as guest molecules. Such confinement of pi-conjugated polymers in fullerene has significance in bulk heterojunction devices for efficient exciton diffusion.

A water soluble third generation poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimer was examined for its ability to solubilize hydrophobic polyaromatic molecules in water and facilitate non-radiative resonance energy transfer between them. One to two orders of magnitude higher aqueous solubilities of pyrene (PY), perylene (PE), acridine yellow (AY) and acridine orange (AO) were observed in presence of a defined concentration of the dendrimer. A reduction in the quantum yield of the donor PY* emission and a partial decrease in lifetime of the donor excited state revealed the occurrence of energy transfer from dendrimer solubilized excited PY to ground state PE molecules, both present within a dendrimer. The energy transfer efficiency was estimated to be similar to 61%. A cascade resonance energy transfer in a three component system, PY*-to-PE-to-AY and PY*-to-PE-to-AO, was demonstrated through incorporation of AY or AO in the two component PY-PE system. In the three-component system, excitation of PY resulted in emission from AY or AO via a cascade energy transfer process. Careful choice of dye molecules with good spectral overlap and the employment of dendrimer as the medium enabled us to expand absorption-emission wavelengths, from similar to 330 nm to similar to 600 nm in aqueous solution.
