A series of novel 2-(4-(2,4-dimethoxybenzoyl)phenoxy)-1-(4-(3-(piperidin-4-yl)propyl) piperidin-1-yl)ethanone derivatives 9(ae) and 10(ag) were synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, IR, mass spectral, and elemental analysis. These novel compounds were evaluated for their antileukemic activity against two human leukemic cell lines (K562 and CEM) by using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide assay. Some of the tested compounds showed good antiproliferative activity with IC50 values ranging from 1.6 to 8.0 mu m. Compound 9c, 9e, and 10f with an electron-withdrawing halogen substituent at the para position on the phenyl ring showed excellent in vitro potency against tested human leukemia cells (K562 and CEM).

Anomalous temperature dependence of Raman phonon wavenumbers attributed to phononphonon anharmonic interactions has been studied in two different families of pyrochlore titanates. We bring out the role of the ionic size of titanium and the inherent vacancies of pyrochlore in these anomalies by studying the effect of replacement of Ti4?+ by Zr4?+ in Sm2Ti2O7 and by stuffing Ho3?+ in place of Ti4?+ in Ho2Ti2O7 with appropriate oxygen stoichiometry. Our results show that an increase in the concentration of the larger ion, i.e. Zr4?+ or Ho3?+, reduces the phonon anomalies, thus implying a decrease in the phononphonon anharmonic interactions. In addition, we find signatures of coupling between a phonon and crystal field transition in Sm2Ti2O7, manifested as an unusual increase in the phonon intensity with increasing temperature. The synthesis and DNA photocleavage studies of furano3,2-c]-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines have been reported. Sm(III)nitrate was found to be an efficient for the Diels-Alder reaction of aryl amines with 2,3-dihydrofuran to offer the corresponding furano3,2-c]-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines derivatives as a mixture of cis/trans stereoisomers in moderate yields. The aqueous solubility of acid catalyst can be recycled without significant loss of activity. The DNA photocleavage studies shows that, the cis/trans stereoisomers are good DNA cleavage mimic in terms of molecular structure. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study here different regions in phase diagrams of the spin-1/2, spin-1 and spin-3/2 one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg systems with frustration (next-nearest-neighbor interaction J(2)) and dimerization (delta). In particular, we analyze the behaviors of the bipartite entanglement entropy and fidelity at the gapless to gapped phase transitions and across the lines separating different phases in the J(2)-delta plane. All the calculations in this work are based on numerical exact diagonalizations of finite systems.

With the objective of investigating the direct conversion of inorganic carbonates such as CaCO3 to hydrocarbons, assisted by transition metal ions, we have carried out studies on CaCO3 in an intimate admixture with iron oxides (FeCaCO) with a wide range of Fe/Ca mole ratios (x), prepared by co-precipitation. The hydrogen reduction of FeCaCO at 673 K gives up to 23% yield of the hydrocarbons CH4, C2H4, C2H6 and C3H8, leaving solid iron residues in the form of iron metal, oxides and carbide particles. The yield of hydrocarbons increases with x and the conversion of hydrocarbons occurs through the formation of CO. While the total yield of hydrocarbons obtained by us is comparable to that in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, the selectivity for C-2-C-3 hydrocarbons reported here is noteworthy.

Background: Due to the functional defects in apoptosis signaling molecules or deficient activation of apoptosis pathways, leukemia has become an aggressive disease with poor prognosis. Although the majority of leukemia patients initially respond to chemotherapy, relapse is still the leading cause of death. Hence targeting apoptosis pathway would be a promising strategy for the improved treatment of leukemia. Hydantoin derivatives possess a wide range of important biological and pharmacological properties including anticancer properties. Here we investigated the antileukemic activity and mechanism of action of one of the potent azaspiro hydantoin derivative, (ASHD). Materials and Methods: To investigate the antileukemic efficacy of ASHD, we have used MTT assay, cell cycle analysis by FACS, tritiated thymidine incorporation assay, Annexin V staining, JC1 staining and western blot analysis. Results: Results showed that ASHD was approximately 3-fold more potent than the parent compounds in inducing cytotoxicity. Tritiated thymidine assay in conjunction with cell cycle analysis suggests that ASHD inhibited the growth of leukemic cells. The limited effect of ASHD on cell viability of normal cells indicated that it may be specifically directed to cancer cells. Translocation of phosphatidyl serine, activation of caspase 3, caspase 9, PARP, alteration in the ratio of BCL2/BAD protein expression as well as the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential suggests activation of the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis. Conclusion: These results could facilitate the future development of novel hydantoin derivatives as chemotherapeutic agents for leukemia.

This work describes an efficient and stereoselective method for the hydrothiolation and -selenation of buta-1,3-diyne derivatives using diaryl disulfides or diselenides, respectively. In the presence of rongalite (HOCH2SO2Na) and potassium carbonate, buta-1,3-diynes undergo stereoselective addition of the thiolate or selenide anion generated in situ from diaryl disulfides or diselenides to afford the corresponding (Z)-1-sulfanyl-or (Z)-1-selanylalk-1-en-3-yne derivatives, respectively. The reaction of buta-1,3-diynes with diaryl disulfides or diselenides at higher temperature (70 degrees C) gave a mixture of monothiolation/selenation and bisthiolation/selenation products in moderate to good yields.

Complex 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/a with a = 17.718(2), b = 9.869(1), c = 19.677(2) Angstrom, beta = 115.16(1)degrees, V = 3114.3(6) Angstrom(3) and Z = 4. The structure was refined to R(wR(2)) = 0.067(0.178). Complex 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/a with a = 17.695(3), b = 9.574(4), c = 20.104(2) Angstrom, beta = 114.18(1)degrees, V = 3107(1) Angstrom(3) and Z = 4. The final residuals are R(wR(2)) = 0.067(0.182). The complexes have a [Cu-2(mu-OH)(mu-OH)(mu-O2CAr)](2+) core with tmen Ligands occupying the terminal sites of the core. In addition, one copper is axially bound to a water molecule. The Cu ... Cu distances and the Cu-OH Cu angles in the core are 3.394(1) Angstrom, 124.4(2)degrees for 1 and 3.374(1) Angstrom, 123.3(3)degrees for 2. The complexes show axial X-band EPR spectral features in methanol glass at 77 K giving g(perpendicular to) = 2.02, g(parallel to) = 2.3 (A(parallel to) = 165 x 10(-4) cm(-1)) and a visible band near similar to 630 nm in methanol. The complexes are weakly antiferromagnetic. A theoretical fit of the magnetic susceptibility data in the temperature range 40-295 K gives -J = 10 cm(-1), g = 2.05 for 1 and -J = 10 cm(-1), g = 2.0 for 2. Plots of -2J versus the Cu-OH-Cu angle (phi) in this class of asymmetrically dibridged dicopper(II) complexes having d(x2-y2)-d(x2-y2) magnetic orbitals show a linear magneto-structural correlation: -2J(cm(-1)) = 11.48 phi(deg) - 1373.

In aqueous binary mixtures, amphiphilic solutes such as dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), ethanol, tertbutyl alcohol (TBA), etc., are known to form aggregates (or large clusters) at small to intermediate solute concentrations. These aggregates are transient in nature. Although the system remains homogeneous on macroscopic length and time scales, the microheterogeneous aggregation may profoundly affect the properties of the mixture in several distinct ways, particularly if the survival times of the aggregates are longer than density relaxation times of the binary liquid. Here we propose a theoretical scheme to quantify the lifetime and thus the stability of these microheterogeneous clusters, and apply the scheme to calculate the same for water-ethanol, water-DMSO, and water-TBA mixtures. We show that the lifetime of these clusters can range from less than a picosecond (ps) for ethanol clusters to few tens of ps for DMSO and TBA clusters. This helps explaining the absence of a strong composition dependent anomaly in water-ethanol mixtures but the presence of the same in water-DMSO and water-TBA mixtures. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Diruthenium(III,IV) complexes [Ru2O(O2CR)(2)(1-MeIm)(6)](ClO4)(3) (R: Me, 4a; C6H4-p-OMe, 4b; C6H4-p-Me, 4c) have been prepared by one-electron oxidation of 1 in MeCN with K2S2O8 in water. Complexes la, 2a . 3H(2)O, and 4a . 1.5H(2)O have been structurally characterized. Crystal data for the complexes are as follows: la, orthorhombic, P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 7.659(3) Angstrom, b = 22.366(3) Angstrom, c = 23.688(2) Angstrom, V = 4058(2) Angstrom(3), Z = 4, R = 0.0475, and R-w = 0.0467 for 2669 reflections with F-o > 2 sigma(F-o); 2a . 3H(2)O, triclinic, <P(1)over bar>, a = 13.735(3) Angstrom, b = 14.428(4) Angstrom, c = 20.515(8) Angstrom, alpha = 87.13(3)degrees, beta = 87.61(3)degrees, gamma = 63.92(2)degrees, V = 3646(2) Angstrom(3), Z = 4, R = 0.0485 and R-w = 0.0583 for 10 594 reflections with F-o > 6 sigma(F-o); 4a . 1.5H(2)O triclinic, <P(1)over bar>, a = 11.969(3) Angstrom, b = 12.090(6) Angstrom, c = 17.421(3) Angstrom, alpha = 108.93(2)degrees, beta = 84.42(2)degrees, gamma = 105.97(2)degrees, V = 2292(1) Angstrom(3), Z = 2, R = 0.0567, and R-w = 0.0705 for 6775 reflections with F-o > 6 sigma(F-o). The complexes have a diruthenium unit held by an oxo and two carboxylate ligands, and the imidazole ligands occupy the terminal sites of the core. The Ru-Ru distance and the Ru-O-oxo-Ru angle in la and 2a . 3H(2)O are 3.266(1), 3.272(1) Angstrom and 122.4(4), 120.5(2)degrees, while in 4a . 1.5H(2)O these values are 3.327(1) Angstrom and 133.6(2)degrees. The diruthenium(III) complexes 1-3 are blue in color and they exhibit an intense visible band in the range 560-575 nm. The absorption is charge transfer in nature involving the Ru(III)-d pi and O-oxo-p pi orbitals. The diruthenium(III,IV) complexes are red in color and show an intense band near 500 nm. The diruthenium(III) core readily gets oxidized with K2S2O8 forming quantitatively the diruthenium(III,IV) complex. The visible spectral record of the conversion shows an isosbestic point at 545 nm for 1 and at 535 nm for 2 and 3. Protonation of the oxide bridge by HClO4 in methanol yields the [Ru-2(mu-OH)(mu-O2CR)(2)](3+) core. The hydroxo species shows a visible band al 550 nm. The pK(a) value for la is 2.45. The protonated species are unstable. The 1-MeIm species converts to the diruthenium(III,IV) core, while the imidazole complex converts to [Ru(ImH)(6)](3+) and some uncharacterized products. Complex [Ru(ImH)(6)](ClO4)(3) has been structurally characterized. The diruthenium(III) complexes are essentially diamagnetic and show characteristic H-1 NMR spectra indicating the presence of the dimeric structure in solution. The diruthenium(III,IV) complexes are paramagnetic and display rhombic EPR spectral features. Complexes 1-3 are redox active. Complex 1 shows the one-electron reversible Ru-2(III)/(RuRuIV)-Ru-III, one-electron quasireversible (RuRuIV)-Ru-III/Ru-2(IV), and two-electron quasireversible Ru-2(III)/Ru-2(II) couples near 0.4, 1.5, and -1.0 V vs SCE In MeCN-0.1 M TBAP, respectively, in the cyclic and differential pulse voltammetric studies. Complexes 2 and 3 exhibit only reversible Ru-2(III)/(RuRuIV)-Ru-III and the quasireversible (RuRuIV)-Ru-III/Ru-2(IV) couples near 0.4 and 1.6 V vs SCE, respectively, The observation of a quasireversible one-step two-electron transfer reduction process in 1 is significant considering its relevance to the rapid and reversible Fe-2(III)/Fe-2(II) redox process known for the tribridged diiron core in the oxy and deoxy forms of hemerythrin.

Experiments have repeatedly observed both thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies in aqueous binary mixtures, surprisingly at low solute concentration. Examples of such binary mixtures include water-DMSO, water-ethanol, water-tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA), and water-dioxane, to name a few. The anomalies have often been attributed to the onset of a structural transition, whose nature, however, has been left rather unclear. Here we study the origin of such anomalies using large scale computer simulations and theoretical analysis in water-DMSO binary mixture. At very low DMSO concentration (below 10%), small aggregates of DMSO are solvated by water through the formation of DMSO-(H2O)(2) moieties. As the concentration is increased beyond 10-12% of DMSO, spanning clusters comprising the same moieties appear in the system. Those clusters are formed and stabilized not only through H-bonding but also through the association of CH3 groups of DMSO. We attribute the experimentally observed anomalies to a continuum percolation-like transition at DMSO concentration X-DMSO approximate to 12-15%. The largest cluster size of CH3-CH3 aggregation clearly indicates the formation of such percolating clusters. As a result, a significant slowing down is observed in the decay of associated rotational auto time correlation functions (of the S = O bond vector of DMSO and O-H bond vector of water). Markedly unusual behavior in the mean square fluctuation of total dipole moment again suggests a structural transition around the same concentration range. Furthermore, we map our findings to an interacting lattice model which substantiates the continuum percolation model as the reason for low concentration anomalies in binary mixtures where the solutes involved have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties.

Water-ethanol mixtures exhibit many interesting anomalies, such as negative excess partial molar volume of ethanol, excess sound absorption coefficient at low concentrations, and positive deviation from Raoult's law for vapor pressure, to mention a few. These anomalies have been attributed to different, often contradictory origins, but a quantitative understanding is still lacking. We show by computer simulation and theoretical analyses that these anomalies arise from the sudden emergence of a bicontinuous phase that occurs at a relatively low ethanol concentration of x(eth) approximate to 0.06-0.10 (that amounts to a volume fraction of 0.17-0.26, which is a significant range!). The bicontinuous phase is formed by aggregation of ethanol molecules, resulting in a weak phase transition whose nature is elucidated. We find that the microheterogeneous structure of the mixture gives rise to a pronounced nonmonotonic composition dependence of local compressibility and nonmonotonic dependence in the peak value of the radial distribution function of ethyl groups. A multidimensional free energy surface of pair association is shown to provide a molecular explanation of the known negative excess partial volume of ethanol in terms of parallel orientation and hence better packing of the ethyl groups in the mixture due to hydrophobic interactions. The energy distribution of the ethanol molecules indicates additional energy decay channels that explain the excess sound attenuation coefficient in aqueous alcohol mixtures. We studied the dependence of the solvation of a linear polymer chain on the composition of the water-ethanol solvent. We find that there is a sudden collapse of the polymer at x(eth) approximate to 0.05-a phenomenon which we attribute to the formation of the microheterogeneous structures in the binary mixture at low ethanol concentrations. Together with recent single molecule pulling experiments, these results provide new insight into the behavior of polymer chain and foreign solutes, such as enzymes, in aqueous binary mixtures.
