In this article, the effect of initial microstructure on the texture evolution in 2014 Al alloy during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) through route A has been reported. Three heat treatment conditions were chosen to generate the initial microstructures, namely (i) the recrystallization anneal (as-received), (ii) solution treatment at 768 K for 1 h, and (iii) solution treatment (768 K for 1 h) plus aging at 468 K for 5 h. Texture analyses were performed using orientation distribution function (ODF) method. The texture strength after ECAP processing was different for the three samples in the order, solutionised > solutionised plus aged condition > as-received. The prominent texture components were A (E) /(A) over bar (E) and B(E)/(B) over bar (E) in addition to several weaker components for the three materials. The strong texture evolution in solutionised condition has been attributed to higher strain hardening of the matrix due to higher amount of solute. In case of the as-received as well as solutionised plus aged alloy, the weaker texture could be due to the strain scattering from extensive precipitate fragmentation and dissolution during ECAP.

In the present study, solidification microstructure and texture evolution in grain-refined Ti-6Al-4V and γ-TiAl alloys via trace boron addition are compared with their baseline counterparts. Boron addition resulted in dramatic grain refinement by almost an order of magnitude. The texture developed in these alloys is also markedly different from the baseline alloys.

In the present work, a thorough investigation of evolution of microstructure and texture has been carried out to elucidate the evolution of texture and grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) during Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE) of some model two-phase materials, namely Cu-0.3Cr and Cu-40Zn. Texture of Cu-0.3Cr alloy is similar to that reported for pure copper. On the other hand, in Cu-40Zn alloy, texture evolution in α and β (B2) phases are interdependent. In Cu-0.3Cr alloy, there is a considerable decreases in volume fraction of low angle boundaries (LAGBs), only a slight increase in CSL boundaries, but increase in high angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) from 1 pass to 4 passes for both the routes. In the case of Cu-40Zn alloy, there is an appreciable increase in CSL volume fraction.

Commercially Pure Magnesium initially hot rolled and having a basal texture was deformed by Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE). ECAE was carried out upto 8 passes in a 90° die following routes A and Bc through a processing sequence involving two temperatures, namely 523 and 473 K. Texture and microstructure formed were studied using electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD) technique. In addition to significant reduction in grain size, strong <0002> fiber texture inclined at an angle ~ 45o from the extrusion axis formed in the material. Texture was also analyzed by orientation distribution function (ODF) and compared vis-à-vis shear texture. A significant amount of dynamic recrystallization occurred during ECAE, which apparently did not influence texture.

The effect of strain path change during rolling has been investigated for copper and nickel using X-ray diffraction and electron back scatter diffraction as well as crystal plasticity simulations. Four different strain paths namely: (i) unidirectional rolling; (ii) reverse rolling; (iii) two-step cross rolling and (iv) multi-step cross rolling were employed to decipher the effect of strain path change on the evolution of deformation texture and microstructure. The cross rolled samples showed weaker texture with a prominent Bs {1 1 0}< 1 1 2 > and P(B(ND)) {1 1 0}< 1 1 1 > component in contrast to the unidirectional and reverse rolled samples where strong S {1 2 3}< 6 3 4 > and Cu {1 1 2}< 1 1 1 > components were formed. This was more pronounced for copper samples compared to nickel. The cross rolled samples were characterized by lower anisotropy and Taylor factor as well as less variation in Lankford parameter. Viscoplastic self-consistent simulations indicated that slip activity on higher number of octahedral slip systems can explain the weaker texture as well as reduced anisotropy in the cross rolled samples. We introduce a novel temporal feature of a signal, namely extrema-based signal track length (ESTL) for the problem of speech segmentation. We show that ESTL measure is sensitive to both amplitude and frequency of the signal. The short-time ESTL (ST_ESTL) shows a promising way to capture the significant segments of speech signal, where the segments correspond to acoustic units of speech having distinct temporal waveforms. We compare ESTL based segmentation with ML and STM methods and find that it is as good as spectral feature based segmentation, but with lesser computational complexity.

In the present investigation, various kinds of textures, namely, unidirectional, 8-ground, and random were attained on the die surfaces. Roughness of the textures was varied using different grits of emery papers or polishing powders. Then pins made of Al-4Mg alloys were slid against steel plates at various numbers of cycles, namely, 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 using pin-on-plate reciprocating sliding tester. Tests were conducted at a sliding velocity of 2 minis in ambient conditions under both dry and lubricated conditions. A constant normal load of 35 N was applied in the tests. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the pins and the formation of transfer layer on the counter surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope. Surface roughness parameters of the plates were measured using an optical profilometer. In the experiments, it was observed that the coefficient of friction and formation of the transfer layer depend on the die surface textures under both dry and lubricated conditions. More specifically, the coefficient of friction decreases for unidirectional and 8-ground surfaces while for random surfaces it increases with number of cycles. However, the coefficient of friction is highest for the sliding perpendicular to the unidirectional textures and least for the random textures under both dry and lubricated conditions. The difference in friction values between these two surfaces decreases with increasing number of cycles. The variation in the coefficient of friction under both dry and lubrication conditions is attributed to the change in texture of the surfaces during sliding. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.
