Inelastic light scattering studies on a single crystal of electron-doped Ca(Fe0.95Co0.05)(2)As-2 superconductor, covering the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition as well as the magnetic transition at T-SM similar to 140 K and the superconducting transition temperature T-c similar to 23 K, reveal evidence for superconductivity-induced phonon renormalization. In particular, the phonon mode near 260 cm(-1) shows hardening below T-c, signaling its coupling with the superconducting gap. All three Raman active phonon modes show anomalous temperature dependence between room temperature and T-c, i.e. the phonon frequency decreases with lowering temperature. Further, the frequency of one of the modes shows a sudden change in temperature dependence at TSM. Using first-principles density functional theory based calculations, we show that the low temperature phase (T-c < T < T-SM) exhibits short-ranged stripe antiferromagnetic ordering, and estimate the spin-phonon couplings that are responsible for these phonon anomalies.

At an e gamma collider, a selectron (e) over tilde(L,R) may be produced in association with a (lightest) neutralino <(chi)over tilde>(0)(1). Decay of the selectron may be expected to yield a final state with an electron and another <(chi)over tilde>(0)(1). If R-parity is violated, these two neutralinos will decay, giving rise to distinctive signatures, which are identified and studied. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

We have synthesized specimens of nanometric lead dispersion in a glassy Al-Cu-V matrix by rapid solidification of the corresponding melt. The microstructure has been designed to avoid superconducting percolation due to coupling of the neighboring particles by the proximity effect. Using these specimens, we have determined quantitatively the effect of size of the ultrafine lead particles on the superconducting transition. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. We have imaged the H92alpha and H75alpha radio recombination line (RRL) emissions from the starburst galaxy NGC 253 with a resolution of similar to4 pc. The peak of the RRL emission at both frequencies coincides with the unresolved radio nucleus. Both lines observed toward the nucleus are extremely wide, with FWHMs of similar to200 km s(-1). Modeling the RRL and radio continuum data for the radio nucleus shows that the lines arise in gas whose density is similar to10(4) cm(-3) and mass is a few thousand M., which requires an ionizing flux of (6-20) x 10(51) photons s(-1). We consider a supernova remnant (SNR) expanding in a dense medium, a star cluster, and also an active galactic nucleus (AGN) as potential ionizing sources. Based on dynamical arguments, we rule out an SNR as a viable ionizing source. A star cluster model is considered, and the dynamics of the ionized gas in a stellar-wind driven structure are investigated. Such a model is only consistent with the properties of the ionized gas for a cluster younger than similar to10(5) yr. The existence of such a young cluster at the nucleus seems improbable. The third model assumes the ionizing source to be an AGN at the nucleus. In this model, it is shown that the observed X-ray flux is too weak to account for the required ionizing photon flux. However, the ionization requirement can be explained if the accretion disk is assumed to have a big blue bump in its spectrum. Hence, we favor an AGN at the nucleus as the source responsible for ionizing the observed RRLs. A hybrid model consisting of an inner advection-dominated accretion flow disk and an outer thin disk is suggested, which could explain the radio, UV, and X-ray luminosities of the nucleus.

We study the possible effects of CP violation in the Higgs sector on t (t) over bar production at a gammagamma collider. These studies are performed in a model-independent way in terms of six form factors {R(S-gamma), J(S-gamma), R(P-gamma), J(P-gamma), S-t, P-t} which parametrize the CP mixing in the Higgs sector, and a strategy for their determination is developed. We observe that the angular distribution of the decay lepton from t/(t) over bar produced in this process is independent of any CP violation in the tbW vertex and hence best suited for studying CP mixing in the Higgs sector. Analytical expressions are obtained for the angular distribution of leptons in the c.m. frame of the two colliding photons for a general polarization state of the incoming photons. We construct combined asymmetries in the initial state lepton (photon) polarization and the final state lepton charge. They involve CP even (x's) and odd (y's) combinations of the mixing parameters. We study limits up to which the values of x and y, with only two of them allowed to vary at a time, can be probed by measurements of these asymmetries, using circularly polarized photons. We use the numerical values of the asymmetries predicted by various models to discriminate among them. We show that this method can be sensitive to the loop-induced CP violation in the Higgs sector in the minimal supersymmetric standard model.

We investigate the use of beam polarisation as well as nal state polarisation efects in probing the interaction of the Higgs boson with a pair of heavy vector bosons in the process e+e! ffH, where f is any light fermion. The sensitivity of the International Linear Collider (ILC) operating at ps = 500 GeV, to such V V H(V = W=Z) couplings is examined in a model independent way. The efects of ISR and beamstrahlung are discussed.

By employing a thermal oxidation strategy, we have grown large area porous Cu2O from Cu foil. CuO nanorods are grown by heating Cu which were in turn heated in an argon atmosphere to obtain a porous Cu2O layer. The porous Cu2O layer is superhydrophobic and exhibits red luminescence. In contrast, Cu2O obtained by direct heating, is hydrophobic and exhibits yellow luminescence. Two more luminescence bands are observed in addition to red and yellow luminescence, corresponding to the recombination of free and bound excitons. Over all, the porous Cu2O obtained from Cu via CuO nanorods, can serve as a superhydrophobic luminescence/phosphor material.

Raman studies on Ca4Al2O5.7Fe2As2 superconductor in the temperature range of 5K to 300 K, covering the superconducting transition temperature T-c = 28.3 K, reveal that the Raman mode at similar to 230 cm(-1) shows a sharp jump in frequency by similar to 2% and linewidth increases by similar to 175% at T-o similar to 60 K. Below T-o, anomalous softening of the mode frequency and a large decrease by similar to 10 cm(-1) in the linewidth are observed. These precursor effects at T-0 (similar to 2T(c)) are attributed to significant superconducting fluctuations, possibly enhanced due to reduced dimensionality arising from weak coupling between the well separated (similar to 15 angstrom) Fe-As layers in the unit cell. A large blue-shift of the mode frequency between 300 K and 60 K (similar to 7%) indicates strong spin-phonon coupling in this superconductor. We studied the feasibility of the measurement of Higgs pair creation at a photon linear collider. From the sensitivity to the anomalous self-coupling of the Higgs boson, the optimum gamma gamma collision energy was found to be around 270 GeV for a Higgs mass of 120 GeV/c(2). We found that large backgrounds such as gamma gamma -> W+W-, ZZ, and b (b) over barb (b) over bar can be suppressed if correct assignment of tracks to parent partons is achieved and Higgs pair events can be observed with a statistical significance of similar to 5 sigma by operating the photon linear collider for 5 years.

We report the temperature evolution of coherently excited acoustic and optical phonon dynamics in the superconducting iron pnictide single crystal Ca(Fe0.944Co0.056)(2)As-2 across the spin density wave transition at T-SDW similar to 85 K and the superconducting transition at T-SC similar to 20 K. The strain pulse propagation model applied to the generation of the acoustic phonons yields the temperature dependence of the optical constants, and longitudinal and transverse sound velocities in the temperature range from 3.1 K to 300 K. The frequency and dephasing times of the phonons show anomalous temperature dependence below T-SC indicating a coupling of these low-energy excitations with the Cooper-pair quasiparticles. A maximum in the amplitude of the acoustic modes at T similar to 170 is seen, attributed to spin fluctuations and strong spin-lattice coupling before T-SDW. Copyright (c) EPLA, 2012

A high energy ep collider, such as the proposed LHeC, possesses the unique facility of permitting direct measurement of the HWW coupling without contamination from the HZZ coupling. At such a machine, the fusion of two W bosons through the HWW vertex would give rise to typical charged current events accompanied by a Higgs boson. We demonstrate that azimuthal angle correlations between the observable charged current final states could then be a sensitive probe of the nature of the HWW vertex and hence of the CP properties of the Higgs boson. Type Ia supernovae, sparked off by exploding white dwarfs of mass close to the Chandrasekhar limit, play the key role in understanding the expansion rate of the Universe. However, recent observations of several peculiar type Ia supernovae argue for its progenitor mass to be significantly super-Chandrasekhar. We show that strongly magnetized white dwarfs not only can violate the Chandrasekhar mass limit significantly, but exhibit a different mass limit. We establish from a foundational level that the generic mass limit of white dwarfs is 2.58 solar mass. This explains the origin of overluminous peculiar type Ia supernovae. Our finding further argues for a possible second standard candle, which has many far reaching implications, including a possible reconsideration of the expansion history of the Universe. Super-resolution imaging techniques are of paramount interest for applications in bioimaging and fluorescence microscopy. Recent advances in bioimaging demand application-tailored point spread functions. Here, we present some approaches for generating application-tailored point spread functions along with fast imaging capabilities. Aperture engineering techniques provide interesting solutions for obtaining desired system point spread functions. Specially designed spatial filters—realized by optical mask—are outlined both in a single-lens and 4Pi configuration. Applications include depth imaging, multifocal imaging, and super-resolution imaging. Such an approach is suitable for fruitful integration with most existing state-of-art imaging microscopy modalities.

Several recently discovered peculiar Type Ia supernovae seem to demand an altogether new formation theory that might help explain the puzzling dissimilarities between them and the standard Type Ia supernovae. The most striking aspect of the observational analysis is the necessity of invoking super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs having masses similar to 2.1-2.8 M-circle dot, M-circle dot being the mass of Sun, as their most probable progenitors. Strongly magnetized white dwarfs having super-Chandrasekhar masses have already been established as potential candidates for the progenitors of peculiar Type Ia supernovae. Owing to the Landau quantization of the underlying electron degenerate gas, theoretical results yielded the observationally inferred mass range. Here, we sketch a possible evolutionary scenario by which super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs could be formed by accretion on to a commonly observed magnetized white dwarf, invoking the phenomenon of flux freezing. This opens multiple possible evolution scenarios ending in supernova explosions of super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs having masses within the range stated above. We point out that our proposal has observational support, such as the recent discovery of a large number of magnetized white dwarfs by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

We present a unified study of the effect of periodic, quasiperiodic, and disordered potentials on topological phases that are characterized by Majorana end modes in one-dimensional p-wave superconducting systems. We define a topological invariant derived from the equations of motion for Majorana modes and, as our first application, employ it to characterize the phase diagram for simple periodic structures. Our general result is a relation between the topological invariant and the normal state localization length. This link allows us to leverage the considerable literature on localization physics and obtain the topological phase diagrams and their salient features for quasiperiodic and disordered systems for the entire region of parameter space.
