The phase relations in the system Cu-Ho-O have been determined at 1300 K using X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, and electron microprobe analysis of samples equilibrated in evacuated quartz ampules and in pure oxygen. Only one ternary compound, Cu2Ho2O5, was found to be stable. The Gibbs free energy of formation of this compound has been measured using the solid-state cell Pt,Cu2O + Cu2Ho2O5 + Ho2O3/(Y2O3)ZrO2/CuO + Cu2O,Pt in the temperature range of 973 to 1350 K. For the formation of Cu2Ho2O5 from its binary component oxides, 2CuO(s) + Ho2O3(S) --> Cu2Ho2O5(s) DELTAG-degrees = 11190 - 13.8T(+/- 120) J-mol-1 Since the formation is endothermic, CU2Ho2O5 becomes thermodynamically unstable with respect to CuO and Ho2O3 below 810 K. When the oxygen partial pressure over Cu2Ho2O5 is lowered, it decomposes according to the reaction 2Cu2Ho2O5(s) --> 2Ho2O3(s) + 2Cu2O(S) + O2(g) for which the equilibrium oxygen potential is given by DELTAmu(O2) = - 238510 + 160.2T(+/- 450) J.mol-1 The decomposition temperature at an oxygen partial pressure of 1.52 x 10(4) Pa was measured using a combined DTA-TGA apparatus. Based on these results, an oxygen potential diagram for the system Cu-Ho-O at 1300 K is presented.

Atomic vibration in the Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) gives rise to non-local interactions. In this paper, an expression for the non-local scaling parameter is derived as a function of the geometric and electronic properties of the rolled graphene sheet in single-walled CNTs. A self-consistent method is developed for the linearization of the problem of ultrasonic wave propagation in CNTs. We show that (i) the general three-dimensional elastic problem leads to a single non-local scaling parameter (e(0)), (ii) e(0) is almost constant irrespective of chirality of CNT in the case of longitudinal wave propagation, (iii) e(0) is a linear function of diameter of CNT for the case of torsional mode of wave propagation, (iv) e(0) in the case of coupled longitudinal-torsional modes of wave propagation, is a function which exponentially converges to that of axial mode at large diameters and to torsional mode at smaller diameters. These results are valid in the long-wavelength limit. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Phase relations in the system La-Rh-O at 1223 Ii have been determined by examination of equilibrated samples by optical and scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy-dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX). Only one ternary oxide, LaRhO3, with distorted orthorhombic perovskite structure (Pbnm, a = 0.5525, b = 0.5680, and c = 0.7901 nm) was identified. The alloys and intermetallics along the La-Rh binary are in equilibrium with La2O3. The thermodynamic properties of LaRhO3 were determined in the temperature range 890 to 1310 K, using a solid-state cell incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte. A new four-compartment design of the emf cell was used to enhance the accuracy of measurement. For the reaction 1/2La(2)O(3) + 1/2Rh(2)O(3) --> LaRhO3, Delta G degrees = - 70 780 + 4.89T (+/- 90) J.mol(-1) The compound decomposes on heating to a mixture of La2O3, Ph and O-2. The calculated decomposition temperatures are 1843 (+/- 5) K in pure O-2 and 1728 (+/- 5) K in air at a pressure of 1.01 x 10(5) Pa. The phase diagrams for the system La-Rh-O at different partial pressures of oxygen are calculated from the thermodynamic information.

The present work deals with an ultrasonic type of wave propagation characteristics of monolayer graphene on silicon (Si) substrate. An atomistic model of a hybrid lattice involving a hexagonal lattice of graphene and surface atoms of diamond lattice of Si is developed to identify the carbon-silicon bond stiffness. Properties of this hybrid lattice model is then mapped into a nonlocal continuum framework. Equivalent force constant due to Si substrate is obtained by minimizing the total potential energy of the system. For this equilibrium configuration, the nonlocal governing equations are derived to analyze the ultrasonic wave dispersion based on spectral analysis. From the present analysis we show that the silicon substrate affects only the flexural wave mode. The frequency band gap of flexural mode is also significantly affected by this substrate. The results also show that, the silicon substrate adds cushioning effect to the graphene and it makes the graphene more stable. The analysis also show that the frequency bang gap relations of in-plane (longitudinal and lateral) and out-of-plane (flexural) wave modes depends not only on the y-direction wavenumber but also on nonlocal scaling parameter. In the nonlocal analysis, at higher values of the y-directional wavenumber, a decrease in the frequency band gap is observed for all the three fundamental wave modes in the graphene-silicon system. The atoms movement in the graphene due to the wave propagation are also captured for all the tree fundamental wave modes. The results presented in this work are qualitatively different from those obtained based on the local analysis and thus, are important for the development of graphene based nanodevices such as strain sensor, mass and pressure sensors, atomic dust detectors and enhancer of surface image resolution that make use of the ultrasonic wave dispersion properties of graphene. The velocity distribution function for the steady shear flow of disks (in two dimensions) and spheres (in three dimensions) in a channel is determined in the limit where the frequency of particle-wall collisions is large compared to particle-particle collisions. An asymptotic analysis is used in the small parameter epsilon, which is naL in two dimensions and na(2)L in three dimensions, where; n is the number density of particles (per unit area in two dimensions and per unit volume in three dimensions), L is the separation of the walls of the channel and a is the particle diameter. The particle-wall collisions are inelastic, and are described by simple relations which involve coefficients of restitution e(t) and e(n) in the tangential and normal directions, and both elastic and inelastic binary collisions between particles are considered. In the absence of binary collisions between particles, it is found that the particle velocities converge to two constant values (u(x), u(y)) = (+/-V, O) after repeated collisions with the wall, where u(x) and u(y) are the velocities tangential and normal to the wall, V = (1 - e(t))V-w/(1 + e(t)), and V-w and -V-w, are the tangential velocities of the walls of the channel. The effect of binary collisions is included using a self-consistent calculation, and the distribution function is determined using the condition that the net collisional flux of particles at any point in velocity space is zero at steady state. Certain approximations are made regarding the velocities of particles undergoing binary collisions :in order to obtain analytical results for the distribution function, and these approximations are justified analytically by showing that the error incurred decreases proportional to epsilon(1/2) in the limit epsilon --> 0. A numerical calculation of the mean square of the difference between the exact flux and the approximate flux confirms that the error decreases proportional to epsilon(1/2) in the limit epsilon --> 0. The moments of the velocity distribution function are evaluated, and it is found that [u(x)(2)] --> V-2, [u(y)(2)] similar to V-2 epsilon and -[u(x)u(y)] similar to V-2 epsilon log(epsilon(-1)) in the limit epsilon --> 0. It is found that the distribution function and the scaling laws for the velocity moments are similar for both two- and three-dimensional systems.

A 1.2 V/1.5 Ah positive-limited nickel/metal hydride cell has been studied to determine its charge-discharge characteristics at different rates in conjunction with its AC impedance data. The faradaic efficiency of the cell is found to be maximum at similar to 70% charge input. The cell has been scaled to a 6 V/1.5 Ah battery. The cycle-life data on the battery suggest that it can sustain a prolonged charge-discharge schedule with little deterioration in its performance.

The leading order "temperature" of a dense two-dimensional granular material fluidized by external vibrations is determined. The grain interactions are characterized by inelastic collisions, but the coefficient of restitution is considered to be close to 1, so that the dissipation of energy during a collision is small compared to the average energy of a particle. An asymptotic solution is obtained where the particles are considered to be elastic in the leading approximation. The velocity distribution is a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution in the leading approximation,. The density profile is determined by solving the momentum balance equation in the vertical direction, where the relation between the pressure and density is provided by the virial equation of state. The temperature is determined by relating the source of energy due to the vibrating surface and the energy dissipation due to inelastic collisions. The predictions of the present analysis show good agreement with simulation results at higher densities where theories for a dilute vibrated granular material, with the pressure-density relation provided by the ideal gas law, sire in error. A systematic procedure is outlined for scaling analysis of momentum and heat transfer in gas tungsten arc weld pools. With suitable selections of non-dimentionalised parameters, the governing equations coupled with appropriate boundary conditions are first scaled, and the relative significance of various terms appearing in them is analysed accordingly. The analysis is then used to predict the orders of magnitude of some important quantities, such as the velocity scene lit the top surface, velocity boundary layer thickness, maximum temperature increase in the pool, and time required for initiation of melting. Some of the quantities predicted from the scaling analysis can also be used for optimised selection of appropriate grid size and time steps for full numerical simulation of the process. The scaling predictions are finally assessed by comparison with numerical results quoted in the literature, and a good qualitative agreement is observed.

A systematic approach is developed for scaling analysis of momentum, heat and species conservation equations pertaining to the case of solidification of a binary mixture. The problem formulation and description of boundary conditions are kept fairly general, so that a large class of problems can be addressed. Analysis of the momentum equations coupled with phase change considerations leads to the establishment of an advection velocity scale. Analysis of the energy equation leads to an estimation of the solid layer thickness. Different regimes corresponding to different dominant modes of transport are simultaneously identified. A comparative study involving several cases of possible thermal boundary conditions is also performed. Finally, a scaling analysis of the species conservation equation is carried out, revealing the effect of a non-equilibrium solidification model on solute segregation and species distribution. It is shown that non-equilibrium effects result in an enhanced macrosegregation compared with the case of an equilibrium model. For the sake of assessment of the scaling analysis, the predictions are validated against corresponding computational results.

In this paper, we outline a systematic procedure for scaling analysis of momentum and heat transfer in laser melted pools. With suitable choices of non-dimensionalising parameters, the governing equations coupled with appropriate boundary conditions are first scaled, and the relative significance of various terms appearing in them are accordingly analysed. The analysis is then utilised to predict the orders of magnitude of some important quantities, such as the velocity scale at the top surface, velocity boundary layer thickness, maximum temperature rise in the pool, fully developed pool-depth, and time required for initiation of melting. Using the scaling predictions, the influence of various processing parameters on the system variables can be well recognised, which enables us to develop a deeper insight into the physical problem of interest. Moreover, some of the quantities predicted from the scaling analysis can be utilised for optimised selection of appropriate grid-size and time-steps for full numerical simulation of the process. The scaling predictions are finally assessed by comparison with experimental and numerical results quoted in the literature, and an excellent qualitative agreement is observed.

We study the statistical properties of spatially averaged global injected power fluctuations for Taylor-Couette flow of a wormlike micellar gel formed by surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium tosylate. At sufficiently high Weissenberg numbers the shear rate, and hence the injected power p(t), at a constant applied stress shows large irregular fluctuations in time. The nature of the probability distribution function (PDF) of p(t) and the power-law decay of its power spectrum are very similar to that observed in recent studies of elastic turbulence for polymer solutions. Remarkably, these non-Gaussian PDFs can be well described by a universal, large deviation functional form given by the generalized Gumbel distribution observed in the context of spatially averaged global measures in diverse classes of highly correlated systems. We show by in situ rheology and polarized light scattering experiments that in the elastic turbulent regime the flow is spatially smooth but random in time, in agreement with a recent hypothesis for elastic turbulence.
