We report the fabrication of free-standing flexible inorganic/organic hybrid structures by exfoliating ZnO nanostructured films from the flat indium tin oxide (ITO)/silicon/sapphire substrates using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). Strong interaction between ZnO and PEDOT: PSS and the thermomechanical response of PEDOT: PSS are the key issues for the exfoliation to prevail. The performance of the free-standing hybrid structures as rectifiers and photodetectors is better as compared to ITO supported hybrid structures. It is also shown that device properties of hybrid structures can be tuned by using different electrode materials. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4729550]

Hexagonal Dy(OH)(3) and cubic Dy2O3 nanorods were prepared by hydrothermal method. Dy(OH)(3) nanorods was directly obtained at 180 degrees C for 20 h after hydrothermal treatment whereas subsequently heat treatment at 750 degrees C for 2 h gives pure cubic Dy2O3. SEM micrographs reveal that needle shaped rods with different sizes were observed in both the phases. TEM results also confirm this. The TL response of hexagonal Dy(OH)(3) and cubic Dy2O3 nanorods have been analyzed for gamma-irradiation over a wide range of exposures (1-5 kGy). TL glow peak intensity increases with gamma dose in both the phases. The activation energy (E), order of kinetics (6), and frequency factor (s) for both the phases have been determined using Chen's peak shape method. The simple glow curve shape, structure and linear response to gamma-irradiation over a large span of exposures makes the cubic Dy2O3 as a useful dosimetric material to estimate high exposures of gamma-rays. A simple thermal evaporation method is presented for the growth of crystalline SnO2 nanowires at a low substrate temperature of 450 degrees C via an gold-assisted vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. The as-grown nanowires were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, and were also tested for methanol vapor sensing. Transmission electron microscopy studies revealed the single-crystalline nature of the each nanowire. The fabricated sensor shows good response to methanol vapor at an operating temperature of 450 degrees C. (C) 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper describes the development of a numerical model for simulating the shaking table tests on wrap-faced reinforced soil retaining walls. Some of the physical model tests carried out on reinforced soil retaining walls subjected to dynamic excitation through uniaxial shaking tests are briefly discussed. Models of retaining walls are constructed in a perspex box with geotextile reinforcement using the wraparound technique with dry sand backfill and instrumented with displacement sensors, accelerometers, and soil pressure sensors. Results showed that the displacements decrease with the increase in number of reinforcement layers, whereas acceleration amplifications were not affected significantly. Numerical modeling of these shaking table tests is carried out using the Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua program. The numerical model is validated by comparing the results with experiments on physical models. Responses of wrap-faced walls with varying numbers of reinforcement layers are compared. Sensitivity analysis performed on the numerical models showed that the friction and dilation angle of backfill material and stiffness properties of the geotextile-soil interface are the most affecting parameters for the model response.

The optical properties and electrical conductivity of highly conducting poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) are reported as a function of the processing additive conditions. The addition of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) increases the conductivity and modifies the dielectric response as observed from the ellipsometric studies. Also the surface roughness and morphology change with the composition of PEDOT: PSS: DMSO and film deposition conditions. The real part of the dielectric function becomes negative in highly conducting samples, indicating the presence of delocalized charge carriers. The real and imaginary parts of the refractive index were determined as a function of wavelength. The results are consistent with the increase in conductivity upon the addition of DMSO.

In this work, the effect of hybridizing micro-Ti with nano-SiC particulates on the microstructural and the mechanical behaviour of Mg-5.6Ti composite were investigated. Mg materials containing micron-sized Ti particulates hybridized with different amounts of nano-size SiC particulates were synthesized using the disintegrated melt deposition method followed by hot extrusion. The microstructural and mechanical behaviour of the developed Mg hybrid composites were studied in comparison with Mg-5.6Ti. Microstructural characterization revealed grain refinement attributed to the presence of uniformly distributed micro-Ti particles embedded with nano-SiC particulates. Electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) analyses of Mg-(5.6Ti + 1.0SiC)(BM) hybrid composite showed relatively more localized recrystallized grains and lesser tensile twin fraction, when compared to Mg-5.6Ti. The evaluation of mechanical properties indicated that the best combination of strength and ductility was observed in the Mg-(5.6Ti + 1.0SiC)(BM) hybrid composites. The superior strength properties of the Mg-(5.6Ti + x-SiC)(BM) hybrid composites when compared to Mg-5.6Ti is attributed to the presence of nano-reinforcements, the uniform distribution of the hybridized particles and the better interfacial bonding between the matrix and the reinforcement particles, achieved by nano-SiC addition.

Neutron powder diffraction study of Ba(Ti1-xZrx)O-3 at close composition intervals has revealed coexistence of ferroelectric phases: orthorhombic (Amm2) + tetragonal (P4mm) for 0.02 <= x <= 0.05 and rhombohedral (R3m) + orthorhombic (Amm2) for 0.07 <= x < 0.09. These compositions exhibit relatively enhanced piezoelectric properties as compared to their single phase counterparts outside this composition region, confirming the polymorphic phase boundary nature of the phase coexistence regions. In the present study, impedance and Raman spectroscopy are adopted to probe the nature and extent of disorder to correlate with transport properties in doped polypyrrole (PPy) thin-film devices, synthesized electrochemically at different temperatures. A comparative study of the impedance spectroscopy is performed on PPy devices by both experimental and simulation approach with varying extent of disorder. The impedance measurements of PPy devices are well described by introducing a constant phase element (CPE) (Q) in modified RQ circuit, which accounts for frequency dependence of dielectric response. However, for the PPy grown at lower temperature, an equivalent circuit consisting of two such RQ elements in series is used for successful modelling of the impedance results, which accounts for the depletion region near the electrode. Raman spectroscopy and the de-convoluted spectra are successfully studied to probe the variation in C=C bond stretching and distribution of conjugation length, which relates to disorder in PPy films and the interpretation is well correlated to the impedance results.

The random eigenvalue problem arises in frequency and mode shape determination for a linear system with uncertainties in structural properties. Among several methods of characterizing this random eigenvalue problem, one computationally fast method that gives good accuracy is a weak formulation using polynomial chaos expansion (PCE). In this method, the eigenvalues and eigenvectors are expanded in PCE, and the residual is minimized by a Galerkin projection. The goals of the current work are (i) to implement this PCE-characterized random eigenvalue problem in the dynamic response calculation under random loading and (ii) to explore the computational advantages and challenges. In the proposed method, the response quantities are also expressed in PCE followed by a Galerkin projection. A numerical comparison with a perturbation method and the Monte Carlo simulation shows that when the loading has a random amplitude but deterministic frequency content, the proposed method gives more accurate results than a first-order perturbation method and a comparable accuracy as the Monte Carlo simulation in a lower computational time. However, as the frequency content of the loading becomes random, or for general random process loadings, the method loses its accuracy and computational efficiency. Issues in implementation, limitations, and further challenges are also addressed.

The primary objective of the present work was to study the electronic and in vitro electrochemical properties of micro-arc oxidized titania films on Cp Ti, fabricated independently in various electrolyte solutions consisting of anions such as phosphate (PO43-), borate (B4O72-), citrate (C6H5O73-) and silicate (SiO32-). Further the role of anions on the structural, morphological and compositional properties of the fabricated films was studied. All the titania films were developed by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique for a fixed treatment time of 8 min under constant current mode. The surface morphology, elemental distribution, composition and structural characteristics of the films were assessed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The thermodynamic and kinetic corrosion properties of the films were studied under simulated body fluid (SBF) conditions (pH 7.4 and 37 degrees C) by conducting chronopotentiometric and potentiodynamic polarization tests. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) coupled with equivalent circuit modelling was carried out to analyse the frequency response and Mott-Schottky analysis was performed to study the semiconducting (electronic) properties of the films. Salt spray fog accelerated corrosion test was conducted for 168h as per ASTM B117 standard to corroborate the corrosion and semiconducting properties of the samples based on the visual examination. The XRD results showed that the transformation from the metastable anatase phase to the thermodynamically stable rutile phase and the crystalline growth of the respective phases were strongly influenced by the addition of anions. The SEM-EDS results demonstrated that the phosphorous (P) content in the films varied from 2.4 at% to 5.0 at% indicating that the amount of P in the films could be modified by adding an appropriate electrolyte additive. The electrochemical corrosion test results showed that the film fabricated in citrate (C6H5O73-) containing electrolyte is thermodynamically and kinetically more stable compared to that of all the others. The results of the Mott-Schottky analysis indicated that all the fabricated films showed an n-type semiconducting behaviour and the film developed in citrate (C6H5O73-) containing electrolyte exhibited the lowest donor concentration and the most negative flat band potential that contributed to its highest corrosion resistance in SBF solution. The results of the salt spray accelerated corrosion tests were in agreement with those obtained from the electrochemical and Mott-Schottky analysis.

The structure and photophysical properties of a new triad (borane-bithiophene-BODIPY) 1 have been investigated. Triad 1 exhibits unprecedented tricolour emission when excited at the borane centred high energy absorption band and also acts as a selective fluorescent and colorimetric sensor for fluoride ions with ratiometric response. The experimental results are supported by computational studies.

The ethanol sensing properties of porous Cr2O3 thin films deposited by the ultrasonic nebulized spray pyrolysis of an aqueous combustion mixture is reported. The impact of the precursor selection and various deposition parameters on the film crystallinity, surface morphology and stoichiometry are studied using thermo-gravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy techniques. The film morphology exhibits a highly porous nature, as a result of the exothermic combustion reaction during film deposition. The gas sensing properties of these films are investigated in the temperature range of 200-375 degrees C for ethanol. The films show two different regions of response for ethanol above and below 300 degrees C. A good relationship between the response and the ethanol concentration is observed, and is modeled using an empirical relation. The possible mechanism and the surface chemical reactions of ethanol over the chromium oxide surface are discussed.

Thermoluminescence properties of YAlO3:Dy3+ nanophosphor prepared by a low temperature solution combustion (SC) method using oxalyl dihydrazide as a fuel were studied and the results were compared to bulk phosphor prepared by solid state (SS) synthesis. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns confirm the orthorhombic phase of SC and SS methods. Rietveld refinement was used to estimate the cell parameters of undoped and Dy3+ doped YAlO3. Scanning electron micrographs reveal dumbbell shape particles. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of YAlO3:Dy3+ nanophosphors were studied at 293 K, 77 K and 10 K. Thermoluminescence responses of SC and SS prepared phosphor were studied using gamma irradiation in the dose range 0.1-6 kGy at a warming rate of 1 degrees C s (1) at room temperature (RT). The optimized concentrations of Dy3+ ions in YAlO3 was found to be 3 mol%. The trapping parameters (i. e. activation energy, frequency factor, order of kinetic) of all the individual peaks of the glow curves have been analysed by using Chen's method. The low fading and linear response in the wide range (0.1-1 kGy) suggests the possibility of usage of SC prepared phosphor in dosimeter applications. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The elastic behavior of single-walled boron nitride nanotubes is studied under axial and torsional loading. Molecular dynamics simulation is carried out with a tersoff potential for modeling the interatomic interactions. Different chiral configurations with similar diameter are considered to study the effect of chirality on the elastic and shear moduli. Furthermore, the effects of tube length on elastic modulus are also studied by considering different aspects ratios. It is observed that both elastic and shear moduli depend upon the chirality of a nanotube. For aspect ratios less than 15, the elastic modulus reduces monotonically with an increase in the chiral angle. For chiral nanotubes, the torsional response shows a dependence on the direction of loading. The difference between the shear moduli against and along the chiral twist directions is maximum for chiral angle of 15 degrees, and zero for zigzag (0 degrees) and armchair (30 degrees) configurations. A droplet introduced in an external convective flow field exhibits significant multimodal shape oscillations depending upon the intensity of the aerodynamic forcing. In this paper, a theoretical model describing the temporal evolution of normal modes of the droplet shape is developed. The fluid is assumed to be weakly viscous and Newtonian. The convective flow velocity, which is assumed to be incompressible and inviscid, is incorporated in the model through the normal stress condition at the droplet surface and the equation of motion governing the dynamics of each mode is derived. The coupling between the external flow and the droplet is approximated to be a one-way process, i.e., the external flow perturbations effect the droplet shape oscillations and the droplet oscillation itself does not influence the external flow characteristics. The shape oscillations of the droplet with different fluid properties under different unsteady flow fields were simulated. For a pulsatile external flow, the frequency spectra of the normal modes of the droplet revealed a dominant response at the resonant frequency, in addition to the driving frequency and the corresponding harmonics. At driving frequencies sufficiently different from the resonant frequency of the prolate-oblate oscillation mode of the droplet, the oscillations are stable. But at resonance the oscillation amplitude grows in time leading to breakup depending upon the fluid viscosity. A line vortex advecting past the droplet, simulated as an isotropic jump in the far field velocity, leads to the resonant excitation of the droplet shape modes if and only if the time taken by the vortex to cross the droplet is less than the resonant period of the P-2 mode of the droplet. A train of two vortices interacting with the droplet is also analysed. It shows clearly that the time instant of introduction of the second vortex with respect to the droplet shape oscillation cycle is crucial in determining the amplitude of oscillation.
