We introduce the inverse annihilation and creation operators a-1 and a(dagger-1) by their actions on the number states. We show that the squeezed vacuum exp(1/2xia(dagger2)]\0] and squeezed first number state exp[1.2xia(dagger2)]\n = 1] are respectively the eigenstates of the operators (a(dagger-1)a) and (aa(dagger-1)) with the eigenvalue xi.

We study the boundedness of Toeplitz operators on Segal-Bargmann spaces in various contexts. Using Gutzmer's formula as the main tool we identify symbols for which the Toeplitz operators correspond to Fourier multipliers on the underlying groups. The spaces considered include Fock spaces, Hermite and twisted Bergman spaces and Segal-Bargmann spaces associated to Riemannian symmetric spaces of compact type.

We present a complete solution to the problem of coherent-mode decomposition of the most general anisotropic Gaussian Schell-model (AGSM) beams, which constitute a ten-parameter family. Our approach is based on symmetry considerations. Concepts and techniques familiar from the context of quantum mechanics in the two-dimensional plane are used to exploit the Sp(4, R) dynamical symmetry underlying the AGSM problem. We take advantage of the fact that the symplectic group of first-order optical system acts unitarily through the metaplectic operators on the Hilbert space of wave amplitudes over the transverse plane, and, using the Iwasawa decomposition for the metaplectic operator and the classic theorem of Williamson on the normal forms of positive definite symmetric matrices under linear canonical transformations, we demonstrate the unitary equivalence of the AGSM problem to a separable problem earlier studied by Li and Wolf [Opt. Lett. 7, 256 (1982)] and Gori and Guattari [Opt. Commun. 48, 7 (1983)]. This conn ction enables one to write down, almost by inspection, the coherent-mode decomposition of the general AGSM beam. A universal feature of the eigenvalue spectrum of the AGSM family is noted.

Nonconservatively loaded columns. which have stochastically distributed material property values and stochastic loadings in space are considered. Young's modulus and mass density are treated to constitute random fields. The support stiffness coefficient and tip follower load are considered to be random variables. The fluctuations of external and distributed loadings are considered to constitute a random field. The variational formulation is adopted to get the differential equation and boundary conditions. The non self-adjoint operators are used at the boundary of the regularity domain. The statistics of vibration frequencies and modes are obtained using the standard perturbation method, by treating the fluctuations to be stochastic perturbations. Linear dependence of vibration and stability parameters over property value fluctuations and loading fluctuations are assumed. Bounds for the statistics of vibration frequencies are obtained. The critical load is first evaluated for the averaged problem and the corresponding eigenvalue statistics are sought. Then, the frequency equation is employed to transform the eigenvalue statistics to critical load statistics. Specialization of the general procedure to Beck, Leipholz and Pfluger columns is carried out. For Pfluger column, nonlinear transformations are avoided by directly expressing the critical load statistics in terms of input variable statistics.

The Leipholz column which is having the Young modulus and mass per unit length as stochastic processes and also the distributed tangential follower load behaving stochastically is considered. The non self-adjoint differential equation and boundary conditions are considered to have random field coefficients. The standard perturbation method is employed. The non self-adjoint operators are used within the regularity domain. Full covariance structure of the free vibration eigenvalues and critical loads is derived in terms of second order properties of input random fields characterizing the system parameter fluctuations. The mean value of critical load is calculated using the averaged problem and the corresponding eigenvalue statistics are sought. Through the frequency equation a transformation is done to yield load parameter statistics. A numerical study incorporating commonly observed correlation models is reported which illustrates the full potentials of the derived expressions.

in this short note, we determine precisely which operators have the property that their (full, symmetric or antisymmetric) second quantisation is an operator which is bounded or belongs to one of the various Schatten ideals; we also note that in 'the interior' of the natural domain, the second quantisation is a continuous map.

Multiple quantum-single quantum correlation experiments are employed for spectral simplification and determination of the relative signs of the couplings. In this study, we have demonstrated the excitation of three nuclei, triple quantum coherences and discussed the information obtainable from such experiments. The experiments have been carried out on doubly labeled acetonitrile and fluoroacetonitrile aligned in liquid crystalline media. The experiment is advantageous in providing many spectral parameters from a single experiment. The coherence pathways involved in the pulse sequence are described using product operators. In this paper, the classical problem of homogenization of elliptic operators in arbitrary domains with periodically oscillating coefficients is considered. Using Bloch wave decomposition, a new proof of convergence is furnished. It sheds new light and offers an alternate way to view the classical results. In a natural way, this method leads us to work in the Fourier space and thus in a framework dual to the one used by L. Tartar [Problemes d'Homogeneisation dans les Equations aux: Derivees Partielles, Cours Peccot au College de Prance, 1977] in his method of homogenization. Further, this technique offers a nontraditional way of calculating the homogenized coefficients which is easy to implement in the computer.

Genetic algorithms (GAs) are search methods that are being employed in a multitude of applications with extremely large search spaces. Recently, there has been considerable interest among GA researchers in understanding and formalizing the working of GAs. In an earlier paper, we have introduced the notion of binomially distributed populations as the central idea behind an exact ''populationary'' model of the large-population dynamics of the GA operators for objective functions called ''functions of unitation.'' In this paper, we extend this populationary model of GA dynamics to a more general class of objective functions called functions of unitation variables. We generalize the notion of a binomially distributed population to a generalized binomially distributed population (GBDP). We show that the effects of selection, crossover, and mutation can be exactly modelled after decomposing the population into GBDPs. Based on this generalized model, we have implemented a GA simulator for functions of two unitation variables-GASIM 2, and the distributions predicted by GASIM 2 match with those obtained from actual GA runs. The generalized populationary model of GA dynamics not only presents a novel and natural way of interpreting the workings of GAs with large populations, but it also provides for an efficient implementation of the model as a GA simulator. Let D denote the open unit disk in C centered at 0. Let H-R(infinity) denote the set of all bounded and holomorphic functions defined in D that also satisfy f(z) = <(f <(z)over bar>)over bar> for all z is an element of D. It is shown that H-R(infinity) is a coherent ring.

A geometrically non-linear Spectral Finite Flement Model (SFEM) including hysteresis, internal friction and viscous dissipation in the material is developed and is used to study non-linear dissipative wave propagation in elementary rod under high amplitude pulse loading. The solution to non-linear dispersive dissipative equation constitutes one of the most difficult problems in contemporary mathematical physics. Although intensive research towards analytical developments are on, a general purpose cumputational discretization technique for complex applications, such as finite element, but with all the features of travelling wave (TW) solutions is not available. The present effort is aimed towards development of such computational framework. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is used for transformation between temporal and frequency domain. SFEM for the associated linear system is used as initial state for vector iteration. General purpose procedure involving matrix computation and frequency domain convolution operators are used and implemented in a finite element code. Convergnence of the spectral residual force vector ensures the solution accuracy. Important conclusions are drawn from the numerical simulations. Future course of developments are highlighted.

To effectively support today’s global economy, database systems need to manage data in multiple languages simultaneously. While current database systems do support the storage and management of multilingual data, they are not capable of querying across different natural languages. To address this lacuna, we have recently proposed two cross-lingual functionalities, LexEQUAL[13] and SemEQUAL[14], for matching multilingual names and concepts, respectively. In this paper, we investigate the native implementation of these multilingual functionalities as first-class operators on relational engines. Specifically, we propose a new multilingual storage datatype, and an associated algebra of the multilingual operators on this datatype. These components have been successfully implemented in the PostgreSQL database system, including integration of the algebra with the query optimizer and inclusion of a metric index in the access layer. Our experiments demonstrate that the performance of the native implementation is up to two orders-of-magnitude faster than the corresponding outsidethe- server implementation. Further, these multilingual additions do not adversely impact the existing functionality and performance. To the best of our knowledge, our prototype represents the first practical implementation of a crosslingual database query engine.

Generalized Bose operators correspond to reducible representations of the harmonic oscillator algebra. We demonstrate their relevance in the construction of topologically non-trivial solutions in noncommutative gauge theories, focusing our attention to flux tubes, vortices, and instantons. Our method provides a simple new relation between the topological charge and the number of times the basic irreducible representation occurs in the reducible representation underlying the generalized Bose operator. When used in conjunction with the noncommutative ADHM construction, we find that these new instantons are in general not unitarily equivalent to the ones currently known in literature.

For a contraction P and a bounded commutant S of P. we seek a solution X of the operator equation S - S*P = (1 - P* P)(1/2) X (1 - P* P)(1/2) where X is a bounded operator on (Ran) over bar (1 - P* P)(1/2) with numerical radius of X being not greater than 1. A pair of bounded operators (S, P) which has the domain Gamma = {(z(1) + z(2), z(2)): vertical bar z(1)vertical bar < 1, vertical bar z(2)vertical bar <= 1} subset of C-2 as a spectral set, is called a P-contraction in the literature. We show the existence and uniqueness of solution to the operator equation above for a Gamma-contraction (S, P). This allows us to construct an explicit Gamma-isometric dilation of a Gamma-contraction (S, P). We prove the other way too, i.e., for a commuting pair (S, P) with parallel to P parallel to <= 1 and the spectral radius of S being not greater than 2, the existence of a solution to the above equation implies that (S, P) is a Gamma-contraction. We show that for a pure F-contraction (S, P), there is a bounded operator C with numerical radius not greater than 1, such that S = C + C* P. Any Gamma-isometry can be written in this form where P now is an isometry commuting with C and C. Any Gamma-unitary is of this form as well with P and C being commuting unitaries. Examples of Gamma-contractions on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces and their Gamma-isometric dilations are discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Various logical formalisms with the freeze quantifier have been recently considered to model computer systems even though this is a powerful mechanism that often leads to undecidability. In this article, we study a linear-time temporal logic with past-time operators such that the freeze operator is only used to express that some value from an infinite set is repeated in the future or in the past. Such a restriction has been inspired by a recent work on spatio-temporal logics that suggests such a restricted use of the freeze operator. We show decidability of finitary and infinitary satisfiability by reduction into the verification of temporal properties in Petri nets by proposing a symbolic representation of models. This is a quite surprising result in view of the expressive power of the logic since the logic is closed under negation, contains future-time and past-time temporal operators and can express the nonce property and its negation. These ingredients are known to lead to undecidability with a more liberal use of the freeze quantifier. The article also contains developments about the relationships between temporal logics with the freeze operator and counter automata as well as reductions into first-order logics over data words.
