We propose a scheme for the compression of tree structured intermediate code consisting of a sequence of trees specified by a regular tree grammar. The scheme is based on arithmetic coding, and the model that works in conjunction with the coder is automatically generated from the syntactical specification of the tree language. Experiments on data sets consisting of intermediate code trees yield compression ratios ranging from 2.5 to 8, for file sizes ranging from 167 bytes to 1 megabyte.

An interesting topic for quite some time is an intermediate phase observed in chalcogenide glasses, which is related to network connectivity and rigidity. This phenomenon is exhibited by Si-Te-In glasses also. It has been addressed here by carrying out detailed thermal investigations by using Alternating Differential Scanning Calorimetry technique. An effort has also been made to determine the stability of these glasses using the data obtained from different thermodynamic quantities and crystallization kinetics of these glasses. Electrical switching behavior by recording I-V characteristics and variation of switching voltages with indium composition have been studied in these glasses for phase change memory applications. Three new series of 4-hydroxy-8-trifluoromethyl-quinoline derivatives were synthesized through multi step reactions. All the newly synthesized compounds were characterized by spectral and elemental analyses. The structure of 5j was evidenced by X-ray crystallographic study. The newly synthesized title compounds were evaluated for their antimicrobial activities including antimycobacterial activity. Amongst the tested compounds, 5b, 5e, 5h, 5j, 6c and 7c displayed promising antimicrobial activity. The mode of action of these active compounds was carried out by docking of receptor enoyl-ACP reductase with newly synthesized candidate ligands, 5b, 5e, 5h, 5j and 6c. (C) 2011 Elsevier Masson SAS. A major myonecrotic zinc containing metalloprotease `malabarin' with thrombin like activity was purified by the combination of gel permeation and anion exchange chromatography from T. malabaricus snake venom. MALDI-TOF analysis of malabarin indicated a molecular mass of 45.76 kDa and its N-terminal sequence was found to be Ile-Ile-Leu-Pro(Leu)-Ile-Gly-Val-Ile-Leu(Glu)-Thr-Thr. Atomic absorption spectral analysis of malabarin raveled the association of zinc metal ion. Malabarin is not lethal when injected i.p. or i.m. but causes extensive hemorrhage and degradation of muscle tissue within 24 hours. Sections of muscle tissue under light microscope revealed hemorrhage and congestion of blood vessel during initial stage followed by extensive muscle fiber necrosis with elevated levels of serum creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase activity. Malabarin also exhibited strong procoagulant action and its procoagulant action is due to thrombin like activity; it hydrolyzes fibrinogen to form fibrin clot. The enzyme preferentially hydrolyzes A alpha followed by B beta subunits of fibrinogen from the N-terminal region and the released products were identified as fibrinopeptide A and fibrinopeptide B by MALDI. The myonecrotic, fibrinogenolytic and subsequent procoagulant activities of malabarin was neutralized by specific metalloprotease inhibitors such as EDTA, EGTA and 1, 10-phenanthroline but not by PMSF a specific serine protease inhibitor. Since there is no antivenom available to neutralize local toxicity caused by T. malabaricus snakebite, EDTA chelation therapy may have more clinical relevance over conventional treatment.

The present article demonstrates how the stiffness, hardness as well as the cellular response of bioinert high-density polyethylene (HDPE) can be significantly improved with combined addition of both bioinert and bioactive ceramic fillers. For this purpose, different amounts of hydroxyapatite and alumina, limited to a total of 40 wt %, have been incorporated in HDPE matrix. An important step in composite fabrication was to select appropriate solvent and optimal addition of coupling agent (CA). In case of chemically coupled composites, 2% Titanium IV, 2-propanolato, tris iso-octadecanoato-O was used as a CA. All the hybrid composites, except monolithic HDPE, were fabricated under optimized compression molding condition (140 degrees C, 0.75 h, 10 MPa pressure). The compression molded composites were characterized, using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Importantly, in vitro cell culture and cell viability study (MTT) using L929 fibroblast and SaOS2 osteoblast-like cells confirmed good cytocompatibility properties of the developed hybrid composites. Ferrocene-conjugated oxidovanadium(IV) complexes [VO(Fc-tpy)(B)](ClO4)(2) (1-4) and [VO(Ph-tpy)(dppz)](ClO4)(2) (5) as a control [Fc = (eta(5)-C5H4)Fe-II(eta(5)-C5H5), Fc-tpy = 4'-ferrocenyl-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine, Ph-tpy = 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine, B = heterocyclic base: 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy in 1), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 2), dipyridoquinoxaline (dpq in 3), dipyridophenazine (dppz in 4)] were prepared and their DNA binding, DNA photocleavage activity and photocytotoxicity studied. The crystal structure of [VO(Fc-tpy)(bpy)](PF6)(2)center dot 3Me(2)CO shows a vanadyl group in six-coordinate (VON5)-O-IV coordination geometry, in which Fc-tpy and bpy display tridentate meridional and bidentate N-donor axial-equatorial binding modes, respectively. The one-electron paramagnetic complexes exhibit a charge-transfer band near 590 nm in DMF. The V-IV/V-III redox couple in 1-4 appears near -0.7 V, whereas the Fc moiety shows a response near 0.6 V vs. SCE in DMF/0.1 M TBAP. The complexes are good binders to calf thymus DNA with K-b values of 10(4)-10(6) M-1. DNA melting and viscometric data suggest groove and/or partial intercalative DNA binding of the complexes. Complexes 3-5 display DNA photocleavage activity in nearIR light of 785 nm. Complex 4 shows significant photocytotoxicity in visible light (400-700 nm) in HeLa cells with low dark toxicity.

Potyviruses temporally regulate their protein function by polyprotein processing. Previous studies have shown that VPg (Viral Protein genome-linked) of Pepper vein banding virus interacts with the NIa-Pro (Nuclear Inclusion-a protease) domain, and modulates the kinetics of the protease. In the present study, we report for the first time that VPg harbors the Walker motifs A and B, and the presence of NIa-Pro, especially in cis (cleavage site (E191A) VPg-Pro mutant), is essential for manifestation of the ATPase activity. Mutation of Lys47 (Walker motif A) and Asp88:Glu89 (Walker motif B) to alanine in E191A VPg-Pro lead to reduced ATPase activity, confirming that this activity was inherent to VPg. We propose that potyviral VPg, established as an intrinsically disordered domain, undergoes plausible structural alterations upon interaction with globular NIa-Pro which induces the ATPase activity. The presence of new matter fields charged under the Standard Model gauge group at intermediate scales below the Grand Unification scale modifies the renormalization group evolution of the gauge couplings. This can in turn significantly change the running of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model parameters, in particular the gaugino and the scalar masses. In the absence of new large Yukawa couplings we can parameterise all the intermediate scale models in terms of only two parameters controlling the size of the unified gauge coupling. As a consequence of the modified running, the low energy spectrum can be strongly affected with interesting phenomenological consequences. In particular, we show that scalar over gaugino mass ratios tend to increase and the regions of the parameter space with neutralino Dark Matter compatible with cosmological observations get drastically modified. Moreover, we discuss some observables that can be used to test the intermediate scale physics at the LHC in a wide class of models.

Nano-indentation studies have been undertaken on bulk Ge15Te85-xSix glasses (0 <= x <= 9), to estimate hardness, H and elastic modulus, E. It is found that E and H increase initially with the increase in the atomic percent of Si. Further, a plateau is seen in the composition dependence of E and H in the composition range 2 <= x <= 6. It is also seen that the addition of up to 2 at% Si increases the density rho of the glass considerably; however, further additions of Si lead to a near linear reduction in rho, in the range 2 <= x <= 6. Beyond x=6, rho increases again with Si content. The variation of molar volume V-m brings out a more fascinating picture. A plateau is seen in the intermediate phase suggesting that the molecular structure of the glasses is adapting to keep the count of constraints fixed in this particular phase. The observed variations in mechanical properties are associated with the Boolchand's intermediate phase in the present glassy system, in the composition range 2 <= x <= 6, suggested earlier from calorimetric and electrical switching studies. The present results reveal rather directly the existence of the intermediate phase in elastic and plastic properties of chalcogenide glasses. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) is one of the successful wireless network paradigms which offers unrestricted mobility without depending on any underlying infrastructure. MANETs have become an exciting and im- portant technology in recent years because of the rapid proliferation of variety of wireless devices, and increased use of ad hoc networks in various applications. Like any other networks, MANETs are also prone to variety of attacks majorly in routing side, most of the proposed secured routing solutions based on cryptography and authentication methods have greater overhead, which results in latency problems and resource crunch problems, especially in energy side. The successful working of these mechanisms also depends on secured key management involving a trusted third authority, which is generally difficult to implement in MANET environ-ment due to volatile topology. Designing a secured routing algorithm for MANETs which incorporates the notion of trust without maintaining any trusted third entity is an interesting research problem in recent years. This paper propose a new trust model based on cognitive reasoning, which associates the notion of trust with all the member nodes of MANETs using a novel Behaviors-Observations- Beliefs(BOB) model. These trust values are used for detec- tion and prevention of malicious and dishonest nodes while routing the data. The proposed trust model works with the DTM-DSR protocol, which involves computation of direct trust between any two nodes using cognitive knowledge. We have taken care of trust fading over time, rewards, and penalties while computing the trustworthiness of a node and also route. A simulator is developed for testing the proposed algorithm, the results of experiments shows incorporation of cognitive reasoning for computation of trust in routing effectively detects intrusions in MANET environment, and generates more reliable routes for secured routing of data.

We consider wavenumbers in in vacuo and fluid-filled isotropic and orthotropic shells. Using the Donnell-Mushtari (DM) theory we find compact and elegant asymptotic expansions for the wavenumbers in the intermediate frequency range, i.e., around the ring frequency. This frequency range corresponds to the frequencies where there is a rapid change in the values of bending wavenumbers and is found to exist in isotropic and orthotropic shells (in vacua and fluid-filled) for low circumferential orders n only. The same is first identified using the n=0 mode of an orthotropic shell. Following this, using the expression for the intermediate frequency, asymptotic expansions are found for other cases. Here, in order to get compact expansions we consider slight orthotropy (epsilon << 1) and light fluid loading (mu << 1). Thus, the orthotropy parameter epsilon and the fluid loading parameter mu are used as asymptotic parameters along with the non-dimensional thickness parameter beta. The methodology can be extended to any order of epsilon, only the expansions become unwieldy. The expansions are matched with the numerical solutions of the corresponding dispersion relation. The match is found to be good.
