Relentless CMOS scaling coupled with lower design tolerances is making ICs increasingly susceptible to wear-out related permanent faults and transient faults, necessitating on-chip fault tolerance in future chip microprocessors (CMPs). In this paper we introduce a new energy-efficient fault-tolerant CMP architecture known as Redundant Execution using Critical Value Forwarding (RECVF). RECVF is based on two observations: (i) forwarding critical instruction results from the leading to the trailing core enables the latter to execute faster, and (ii) this speedup can be exploited to reduce energy consumption by operating the trailing core at a lower voltage-frequency level. Our evaluation shows that RECVF consumes 37% less energy than conventional dual modular redundant (DMR) execution of a program. It consumes only 1.26 times the energy of a non-fault-tolerant baseline and has a performance overhead of just 1.2%.

FDDI (Fibre Distributed Data Interface) is a 100 Mbit/s token ring network with two counter rotating optical rings. In this paper various possible faults (like lost token, link failures, etc.) are considered, and fault detection and the ring recovery process in case of a failure and the reliability mechanisms provided are studied. We suggest a new method to improve the fault detection and ring recovery process. The performance improvement in terms of station queue length and the average delay is compared with the performance of the existing fault detection and ring recovery process through simulation. We also suggest a modification for the physical configuration of the FDDI networks within the guidelines set by the standard to make the network more reliable. It is shown that, unlike the existing FDDI network, full connectivity is maintained among the stations even when multiple single link failures occur. A distributed algorithm is proposed for link reconfiguration of the modified FDDI network when many successive as well as simultaneous link failures occur. The performance of the modified FDDI network under link failures is studied through simulation and compared with that of the existing FDDI network.

We have synthesised and determined the solution conformation and X-ray crystal structure of the octapeptide Ac-Delta Phe(1)-Val(2)-Delta Phe(3)-Phe(4)-Ala(5)-Val(6)-Delta Phe(7)-Gly(8)-OCH3 (Delta Phe = alpha,beta-dehydrophenylalanine) containing three Delta Phe residues as conformation constraining residues. In the solid state, the peptide folds into (i) an N-terminal (3)10(R)-helical pentapeptide segment, (ii) a middle non-helical segment, and (iii) a C-terminal incipient (3)10(L)-helical segment. The results of H-1 NMR data also suggest that a similar multiple-turn conformation for the peptide is largely maintained in solution. Though the C-terminal helix is incipient, the overall conformation of the octapeptide matches well with the conformation of the hairpins reported. Comparison of the pi-turn seen in the octapeptide molecule with those observed in proteins at the C-terminal end of helixes shows the structural similarity among them. A water molecule mediates the 5 --> 2 hydrogen bond in the pi-turn region. This is the first example of a water-inserted pi-turn in oligopeptides reported so far. Comparison between the present octapeptide and another (3)10(R)-helical dehydro nonapeptide Boc-Val-Delta Phe-Phe-Ala-Phe-Delta Phe-Val-Delta Phe-Gly-OCH3 solved by us recently, demonstrates the possible sequence-dependent conformational variations in alpha,beta-dehydrophenylalanine-containing oligopeptides.

We report the structural and optical properties of a-plane GaN film grown on r-plane sapphire substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. High resolution X-ray diffraction was used to determine the out-of-plane and in-plane epitaxial relation of a-plane GaN to r-plane sapphire. Low-temperature photoluminescence emission was found to be dominated by basal stacking faults along with near-band emission. Raman spectroscopy shows that the a-GaN film is of reasonably good quality and compressively strained. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The rhesus monkey Macaca mulatta and Hanuman langur Presbytis entellus are distributed all over the State of Himachal Pradesh, India. Although both species inhabit forested areas, only rhesus monkeys seem also to have become urbanized. There are about 200,000 rhesus monkeys and 120,000 Hanuman langurs. A three-year survey at Shimla showed an increasing trend in their populations. Potential threats to survival of these primates differ in the 12 districts. The two species differ in feeding and habitat preferences. People's feelings, perceptions and attitudes reward them point to an incipient man-monkey conflict and erosion of conservation ethics. A comprehensive management plan for these primates should be formulated, and involve local people. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Limited

The similar to 2500 km-long Himalaya plate boundary experienced three great earthquakes during the past century, but none of them generated any surface rupture. The segments between the 1905-1934 and the 1897-1950 sources, known as the central and Assam seismic gaps respectively, have long been considered holding potential for future great earthquakes. This paper addresses two issues concerning earthquakes along the Himalaya plate boundary. One, the absence of surface rupture associated with the great earthquakes, vis-a-vis the purported large slip observed from paleoseismological investigations and two, the current understanding of the status of the seismic gaps in the Central Himalaya and Assam, in view of the paleoseismological and historical data being gathered. We suggest that the ruptures of earthquakes nucleating on the basal detachment are likely to be restricted by the crustal ramps and thus generate no surface ruptures, whereas those originating on the faults within the wedges promote upward propagation of rupture and displacement, as observed during the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, that showed a peak offset of 7 m. The occasional reactivation of these thrust systems within the duplex zone may also be responsible for the observed temporal and spatial clustering of earthquakes in the Himalaya. Observations presented in this paper suggest that the last major earthquake in the Central Himalaya occurred during AD 1119-1292, rather than in 1505, as suggested in some previous studies and thus the gap in the plate boundary events is real. As for the Northwestern Himalaya, seismically generated sedimentary features identified in the 1950 source region are generally younger than AD 1400 and evidence for older events is sketchy. The 1897 Shillong earthquake is not a decollement event and its predecessor is probably similar to 1000 years old. Compared to the Central Himalaya, the Assam Gap is a corridor of low seismicity between two tectonically independent seismogenic source zones that cannot be considered as a seismic gap in the conventional sense. Seepage effects on the stability, mobility, and incipient motion of sand-bed particles are experimentally investigated. Seepage through a sand bed in a downward direction (suction) reduces the stability of particles, and it can even initiate their movement. The bed erosion is increased with the increased rates of suction. Whereas the seepage in an upward direction (injection) increases the stability of bed particles, it does not aid initiating their movement. The rate of bed erosion is reduced or even stopped by the increased infection rates. Hydrodynamic conditions leading to the so-called "pseudoincipient motion'' with suction (for the initiation of particles movement that are otherwise at rest under no-seepage conditions), and with injection (for only arresting the particles movement that are otherwise moving initially) are evaluated. The conventional Shields curve cannot be used to predict such pseudoincipient motion conditions with seepage. The concepts thus developed are useful for a better understanding of the sediment transport mechanics and in the design of stable alluvial channels affected by seepage.

Detailed Fourier line shape analysis has been performed on three different compositions of the composite matrix of Al-Si-Mg and SiC. The alloy composition in wt% is Al-7%Si, 0.35%Mg, 0.14%Fe and traces of copper and titanium (similar to 0.01%) with SiC varying from 0 to 30wt% in three steps i.e., 0, 10 and 30wt%. The line shift analysis has been performed by considering 111, 200, 220, 311 and 222 reflections after estimating their relative shift. Peak asymmetry analysis has been performed considering neighbouring 111 and 200 reflections and Fourier line shape analysis has been performed after considering the multiple orders 111 and 222, 200 and 400 reflections. Combining all these three analyses it has been found that the deformation stacking faults both intrinsic alpha' and extrinsic alpha " are absent in this alloy system whereas the deformation twin beta has been found to be positive and increases with the increase of SiC concentration. So, like other Al-base alloys this ternary alloy also shows high stacking fault energy, and the addition of SiC introduces deformation twin which increases with its concentration in the deformed lattices.

In this paper, the performance of distance relays when applied to transmission system equipped with shunt FACTS device, Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) is described. The aim of the proposed study is to evaluate the performance of distance relays when STATCOM is incorporated at the mid point of transmission lines for voltage control. A detailed model of STATCOM and its control strategy is presented. The presence of these devices significantly affects apparent impedance seen by the distance relays due to their rapid response to different power system configurations. The distance relay is evaluated for different loading conditions and for different fault locations. The faults are created during various pre-fault loading conditions. The studies are performed on 400KV and 132KV systems and the results are presented. Simulation studies are carried out using transient simulation software, PSCAD/EMTDC.

A fuzzy logic intelligent system is developed for gas-turbine fault isolation. The gas path measurements used for fault isolation are exhaust gas temperature, low and high rotor speed, and fuel flow. These four measurements are also called the cockpit parameters and are typically found in almost all older and newer jet engines. The fuzzy logic system uses rules developed from a model of performance influence coefficients to isolate engine faults while accounting for uncertainty in gas path measurements. It automates the reasoning process of an experienced powerplant engineer. Tests with simulated data show that the fuzzy system isolates faults with an accuracy of 89% with only the four cockpit measurements. However, if additional pressure and temperature probes between the compressors and before the burner, which are often found in newer jet engines, are considered, the fault isolation accuracy rises to as high as 98%. In addition, the additional sensors are useful in keeping the fault isolation system robust as quality of the measured data deteriorates.

A fuzzy logic system is developed for helicopter rotor system fault isolation. Inputs to the fuzzy logic system are measurement deviations of blade bending and torsion response and vibration from a "good" undamaged helicopter rotor. The rotor system measurements used are flap and lag bending tip deflections, elastic twist deflection at the tip, and three forces and three moments at the rotor hub. The fuzzy logic system uses rules developed from an aeroelastic model of the helicopter rotor with implanted faults to isolate the fault while accounting for uncertainty in the measurements. The faults modeled include moisture absorption, loss of trim mass, damaged lag damper, damaged pitch control system, misadjusted pitch link, and damaged flap. Tests with simulated data show that the fuzzy system isolates rotor system faults with an accuracy of about 90-100%. Furthermore, the fuzzy system is robust and gives excellent results, even when some measurements are not available. A rule-based expert system based on similar rules from the aeroelastic model performs much more poorly than the fuzzy system in the presence of high levels of uncertainty.

The removal of noise and outliers from measurement signals is a major problem in jet engine health monitoring. Topical measurement signals found in most jet engines include low rotor speed, high rotor speed. fuel flow and exhaust gas temperature. Deviations in these measurements from a baseline 'good' engine are often called measurement deltas and the health signals used for fault detection, isolation, trending and data mining. Linear filters such as the FIR moving average filter and IIR exponential average filter are used in the industry to remove noise and outliers from the jet engine measurement deltas. However, the use of linear filters can lead to loss of critical features in the signal that can contain information about maintenance and repair events that could be used by fault isolation algorithms to determine engine condition or by data mining algorithms to learn valuable patterns in the data, Non-linear filters such as the median and weighted median hybrid filters offer the opportunity to remove noise and gross outliers from signals while preserving features. In this study. a comparison of traditional linear filters popular in the jet engine industry is made with the median filter and the subfilter weighted FIR median hybrid (SWFMH) filter. Results using simulated data with implanted faults shows that the SWFMH filter results in a noise reduction of over 60 per cent compared to only 20 per cent for FIR filters and 30 per cent for IIR filters. Preprocessing jet engine health signals using the SWFMH filter would greatly improve the accuracy of diagnostic systems. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

We report a new method for quantitative estimation of graphene layer thicknesses using high contrast imaging of graphene films on insulating substrates with a scanning electron microscope. By detecting the attenuation of secondary electrons emitted from the substrate with an in-column low-energy electron detector, we have achieved very high thickness-dependent contrast that allows quantitative estimation of thickness up to several graphene layers. The nanometer scale spatial resolution of the electron micrographs also allows a simple structural characterization scheme for graphene, which has been applied to identify faults, wrinkles, voids, and patches of multilayer growth in large-area chemical vapor deposited graphene. We have discussed the factors, such as differential surface charging and electron beam induced current, that affect the contrast of graphene images in detail. We study odd-membered chains of spin-1/2 impurities, with each end connected to its own metallic lead. For antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, universal two-channel Kondo (2CK) physics is shown to arise at low energies. Two overscreening mechanisms are found to occur depending on coupling strength, with distinct signatures in physical properties. For strong interimpurity coupling, a residual chain spin-1/2 moment experiences a renormalized effective coupling to the leads, while in the weak-coupling regime, Kondo coupling is mediated via incipient single-channel Kondo singlet formation. We also investigate models in which the leads are tunnel-coupled to the impurity chain, permitting variable dot filling under applied gate voltages. Effective low-energy models for each regime of filling are derived, and for even fillings where the chain ground state is a spin singlet, an orbital 2CK effect is found to be operative. Provided mirror symmetry is preserved, 2CK physics is shown to be wholly robust to variable dot filling; in particular, the single-particle spectrum at the Fermi level, and hence the low-temperature zero-bias conductance, is always pinned to half-unitarity. We derive a Friedel-Luttinger sum rule and from it show that, in contrast to a Fermi liquid, the Luttinger integral is nonzero and determined solely by the ``excess'' dot charge as controlled by gate voltage. The relevance of the work to real quantum dot devices, where interlead charge-transfer processes fatal to 2CK physics are present, is also discussed. Physical arguments and numerical renormalization-group techniques are used to obtain a detailed understanding of these problems.

SrTiO3:Pr3+,Al3+ phosphor samples with varying ratios of Sr/Ti/Al were prepared by the gel-carbonate method and the mechanism of enhancement of the red photoluminescence intensity therein was investigated. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of SrTiO3:Pr3+ show both D-1(2) --> H-3(4) and P-3(0) --> H-3(4) emission in the red and blue spectral regions, respectively, with comparable intensity. The emission intensity of D-1(2) --> H-3(4) is drastically enhanced by the incorporation of Al3+ and excess Ti4+ in the compositional range Sr(Ti,Al-y)(O3+3y/2):Pr3+ (0.2 less than or equal to y less than or equal to 0.4) and SrTi1+xAlyO3+z:Pr3+ (0.2 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.5; 0.05 less than or equal to y less than or equal to 0.1; z = 2x + 3y/2) with the complete disappearance of the blue band. This cannot be explained by the simple point defect model as the EPR studies do not show any evidence for the presence of electron or hole centers. TEM investigations show the presence of exsolved nanophases of SrAl12O19 and/or TiO2 in the grain boundary region as well as grain interiors as lamellae which, in turn, form the solid-state defects, namely, dislocation networks, stacking faults and crystallographic shear planes whereby the framework of corner shared TiO6 octehedra changes over to edge-sharing TiO5-AlO5 strands as indicated from the Al-27 MAS NMR studies. The presence of transitional nanophases and the associated defects modify the excitation-emission processes by way of formation of electronic sub-levels at 3.40 and 4.43 eV, leading to magnetic-dipole related red emission with enhanced intensity. This is evidenced by the fact that SrAl12O19:Pr3+,Ti4+ shows bright red emission whereas SrAl12O19:Pr3+ does not show red photoluminescence.
