The hot deformation behaviour of Mg–3Al alloy has been studied using the processing-map technique. Compression tests were conducted in the temperature range 250–550 °C and strain rate range 3 × 10−4 to 102 s−1 and the flow stress data obtained from the tests were used to develop the processing map. The various domains in the map corresponding to different dissipative characteristics have been identified as follows: (i) grain boundary sliding (GBS) domain accommodated by slip controlled by grain boundary diffusion at slow strain-rates (<10−3 s−1) in the temperature range from 350 to 450 °C, (ii) two different dynamic recrystallization (DRX) domains with a peak efficiency of 42% at 550 °C/10−1 s−1 and 425 °C/102 s−1 governed by stress-assisted cross-slip and thermally activated climb as the respective rate controlling mechanisms and (iii) dynamic recovery (DRV) domain below 300 °C in the intermediate strain rate range from 3 × 10−2 to 3 × 10−1 s−1. The regimes of flow instability have also been delineated in the processing map using an instability criterion. Adiabatic shear banding at higher strain rates (>101 s−1) and solute drag by substitutional Al atoms at intermediate strain rates (3 × 10−2 to 3 × 10−1 s−1) in the temperature range (350–450 °C) are responsible for flow instability. The relevance of these mechanisms with reference to hot working practice of the material has been indicated. The processing maps of Mg–3Al alloy and as-cast Mg have been compared qualitatively to elucidate the effect of alloying with aluminum on the deformation behaviour of magnesium.

In this experimental study, the dry sliding wear and two-body abrasive wear behaviour of graphite filled carbon fabric reinforced epoxy composites were investigated. Carbon fabric reinforced epoxy composite was used as a reference material. Sliding wear experiments were conducted using a pin-on-disc wear tester under dry contact condition. Mass loss was determined as a function of sliding velocity for loads of 25, 50, 75, and 100 N at a constant sliding distance of 6000 m. Two-body abrasive wear experiments were performed under multi-pass condition using silicon carbide (SiC) of 150 and 320 grit abrasive papers. The effects of abrading distance and different loads have been studied. Abrasive wear volume and specific wear rate as a function of applied normal load and abrading distance were also determined. The results show that in dry sliding wear situations, for increased load and sliding velocity, higher wear loss was recorded. The excellent wear characteristics were obtained with carbon-epoxy containing graphite as filler. Especially, 10 wt.% of graphite in carbon-epoxy gave a low wear rate. A graphite surface film formed on the counterface was confirmed to be effective in improving the wear characteristics of graphite filled carbon-epoxy composites. In case of two-body abrasive wear, the wear volume increases with increasing load/abrading distance. Experimental results showed the type of counterface (hardened steel disc and SiC paper) material greatly influences the wear behaviour of the composites. Wear mechanisms of the composites were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. Wear of carbon-epoxy composite was found to be mainly due to a microcracking and fiber fracture mechanisms. It was found that the microcracking mechanism had been caused by progressive surface damage. Further, it was also noticed that carbon-epoxy composite wear is reduced to a greater extent by addition of the graphite filler, in which wear was dominated by microplowing/microcutting mechanisms instead of microcracking.

Abrasion and slurry erosion behaviour of chromium-manganese iron samples with chromium (Cr) in the range similar to 16-19% and manganese (Mn) at 5 and 10% levels have been characterized for hardness followed by microstructural examination using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Positron lifetime studies have been conducted to understand the defects/microporosity influence on the microstructure. The samples were heat treated and characterized to understand the structural transformations in the matrix. The data reveals that hardness decreased with increase in Mn content from 5 to 10% in the first instance and then increase in the section size in the other case, irrespective of the sample conditions. The abrasion and slurry erosion losses show increase with increase in the section size as well as with increase in Mn content. The positron results show that as hardness increases from as-cast to heat treated sample, the positron trapping rate and hence defect concentration showed opposite trend as expected. So a good correlation between defects concentration and the hardness has been observed. These findings also corroborate well with the microstructural features obtained from optical and scanning electron microscopy. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

A conventional magnesium alloy, AZ91D, and two creep resistant magnesium alloys, developed for powertrain applications, MRI 153M and MRI 230D, are prepared by high pressure die casting. These alloys are tested for their creep behaviour in the continuous manner, as is the Current practice, and in the interrupted manner, which represents the real life Situation more closely. It is observed that the interrupted creep tests give rise to a primary creep appearing at the beginning of each cycle resulting in a higher average strain rate than that encountered in the continuous creep tests. Further, the shorter the cycle time, higher is the average strain rate in the interrupted creep tests. A higher average strain rate will give rise to a higher strain over the same period. This is attributed to the recovery taking place during the cooling and heating between two cycles. The effect of additional precipitation during interrupted creep tests depends on the nature of the precipitates. The additional precipitation of beta phase during the cooling and heating between two cycles increases the steady state strain rate in the AZ91D and MRI 153M alloys. whereas the additional precipitation of C36 phase during the cooling and heating between two cycles decreases the steady state strain rate in the MRI 230D alloy. Nickel rich NiTi films were sputter deposited on p-doped Si left angle bracket1 0 0right-pointing angle bracket substrates maintained at 300 °C. The films were subsequently solution treated at 700 °C for 30 min followed by ageing at 400 and 500 °C for 5 h. The microstructure of the films was examined by TEM and these studies revealed that the NiTi films were mostly amorphous in the as-deposited condition. The subsequent solution treatment and ageing resulted in crystallization of the films with the film aged at 400 °C exhibiting nanocrystalline grains and three phases viz. B2 (austenite), R and Ni3Ti2 whereas the film aged at 500 °C shows micron sized grains and two phases viz. R and Ni3Ti2. Nanoindentation studies revealed that the nature of the load versus indentation depth response for the films aged at 400 and 500 °C was different. For the same load, the indenter penetrated to a much greater depth for the film aged at 400 °C as compared to the film aged at 500 °C. Also the ratio of the residual indentation depth (hf) to maximum indentation depth (hmax) is lower for the film aged at 400 °C as compared to the film aged at 500 °C. This was attributed to the occurrence of stress induced martensitic transformation of the B2 phase present in the film aged at 400 °C during indentation loading which results in a transformation strain in addition to the normal elastic and plastic strains and its subsequent recovery on unloading. The hardness and elastic modulus measured using the Oliver and Pharr analysis was also found to be lower for the film aged at 400 °C as compared to the film aged at 500 °C which was also primarily attributed to the same effect.

Synchronising bushcricket males achieve synchrony by delaying their chirps in response to calling neighbours. In multi-male choruses, males that delay chirps in response to all their neighbours would remain silent most of the time and be unable to attract mates. This problem could be overcome if the afferent auditory system exhibited selective attention, and thus a male interacted only with a subset of neighbours. We investigated whether individuals of the bushcricket genus Mecopoda restricted their attention to louder chirps neurophysiologically, behaviourally and through spacing. We found that louder leading chirps were preferentially represented in the omega neuron but the representation of softer following chirps was not completely abolished. Following chirps that were 20 dB louder than leading chirps were better represented than leading chirps. During acoustic interactions, males synchronised with leading chirps even when the following chirps were 20 dB louder. Males did not restrict their attention to louder chirps during interactions but were affected by all chirps above a particular threshold. In the field, we found that males on average had only one or two neighbours whose calls were above this threshold. Selective attention is thus achieved in this bushcricket through spacing rather than neurophysiological filtering of softer signals.

The ignition behaviour of boron powder, prepared through electrowinning process, was studied by using thermogravimetry coupled with simultaneous differential thermal analysis (TG-SDTA). The dependence of the inception of the ignition reaction on the partial pressure of oxygen, particle size of the boron powder and heating rate was investigated. It was observed that all these factors affect the ignition temperature. Boron powder with a mean particle size of about 10 mu m was found to be susceptible to ignition in oxygen even at 783K. In general, the susceptibility to ignition was found to vary inversely with the degree of crystallinity. Presence of carbon was found to retard the oxidation of boron and raise the ignition temperature. These results are useful in safe handling and storage of finely divided boron powder and in the subsequent production of boron carbide from it. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Soils in and and semi-arid zones undergoes volume changes due to wetting. Depending upon the type of clay minerals present, degree of saturation, externally applied load and bonding, the fine grained soils either swells or compresses. One of the parameter that affects the volume change behaviour is the primary clay mineral present in their clay size fraction. A simple method of identifying the same has been presented. It has been brought out that in an expansive unsaturated undisturbed soil, the diffuse double layer repulsion, the stress state and the bonding play significant role in their volume change behaviour. In non-expansive fine grained unsaturated undisturbed soils, the shearing resistance at particle level (including the matrix suction and bonding) and fabric play a significant role in influencing the volume change behaviour. While both the mechanism co-exist, one of them play a dominant role depending upon the primary clay mineral is swelling or non swelling.

A detailed polarographic (a.c. and d.c.) and coulometric investigation of nitrobenzene has been made at various pH values in the presence of different concentrations of ethanol. Below pH 4.7, two waves are apparent but above this pH, the second wave does not appear. Coulometric evidence indicates that the first and second waves correspond to the four-and two-electron processes, respectively. The coulometric method was not applicable in sodium hydroxide and sodium acetate solutions. When the diffusion coefficients (from the diaphragm cell) are used in the Ilkovic equation, no reliable conclusions can be reached for the number of electrons involved in the reduction process in alkaline solutions. The a.c. polarographic method gives evidence for the formation of species such as: C6H5NO2H22+, C6H5NO2− and C6H5NO22−. Analysis of d.c. polarographic data by Delahay's treatment of irreversible waves, indicates that the number of electrons involved in the rate-determining step is 2. In sodium hydroxide solutions, however, the first main wave is split indicating more than one rate-determining step. The results presented in this paper indicate that the first wave in the reduction of nitrobenzene is a four-electron process at all pH values. The second wave, which appears below pH 4.7, corresponds to a two-electron process irrespective of wave heights. The difference in the a.c. polarographic behaviour in acid and alkaline solutions has given evidence for the formation of species like C6H5NO2H2, C6H5NO2−, and C6H5NO22.

The Ramberg-Osgood type constitutive law for creep suggested by Iyengar2 has been verified on high-density polyethylene. The time functions are evaluated from the experimental data of Scheweiker and Sidebottom3. It is found that the creep behaviour of the above material can be represented by the Ramberg-Osgood type law.

The Ramberg-Osgood relation which adequately describes the stress-strain curve of a strain-hardening material is extended to formulate the constitutive laws for creep. The constitutive laws which describe primary creep adequately are extended to secondary creep. The results are verified for the case of R.R. 59 at 200°C, Nimonic 80A and Nimonic 90 alloys at 750°C.

1. The polarographic behaviour of amino-acid complexes of zinc has been studied using seven amino acids as complexing agents. 2. The effect of varying the pH of the base solution and the concentration of amino-acid anion on the polarographic behaviour of zinc in these solutions have indi cated the formation of twelve amino-acid complexes. The stability constants could not be calculated due to the irreversible nature of the waves. 3. The effect of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, and ammonia on the polarographic behaviour of zinc has been investigated. The results can be interpreted as due to the formation of mixed complexes in many systems. 4. Amino-acid base solutions have been found to be suitable for the polarographic estimation of zinc.

The accidental discovery of a cell with haploid number of diplochromosomes in squashes of colchicine-treated root tips led to a search for haploid anaphases in treated roots allowed to recover in water. No haploid anaphases were seen. Apart from the divisional stages of diploid and tetraploid nuclei, cells with two pro-, meta- and ana-phases were observed. The formation of distinct cell boundaries by each nucleus of an originally multinucleate cell indicates their potentialities in this direction.
