The permeability index Ck, similar to the compression index, is the slope of the void ratio – coefficient of permeability relationship. Literature shows that, in general, for sensitive clays it can be related to initial void ratio by Ck = 0.5e0. The possibility of obtaining such a relationship for Cochin marine clays in terms of liquid limit void ratio is indicated in this paper. Analysis of permeability behaviour of Cochin marine clays and the test results available in published literature using generalized state parameter approach show that, in principle, these forms of equations for the permeability index are tenable, even though they were obtained based on experimental observation alone.

This article examines the changes in interparticle forces brought about on prolonged contact (1 year period) of a bentonite clay with artificial seawater. The study is undertaken with the purpose of identifying the physico-chemical factors that impart a nonswelling character to smectite clays deposited in marine environments. Results show that equilibration of the bentonite clay with artificial seawater (total pore salinity approximately 42 gL-1) for a 1 year period does not lead to any mineralogical changes in the clay specimens; however, their exchangeable cation positions become prominently dominated by magnesium ions. The consistency limits of the seawater-equilibrated bentonite was determined on stepwise leaching to lower salinities. The predominance of diffuse double-layer repulsion forces in the pore salt concentration range of 42 gL-1 to 1.1 gL-1 caused an increase in the liquid limits of the seawater-equilibrated bentonite specimens on reducing the salinity in the corresponding range (42 gL-1 to 1.1 gL-1). The attraction forces, however, prevail over the repulsion forces at salt concentrations <1.1 gL-1 and cause a decrease in liquid limit of the clay specimens with reduction in pore salinity, which is typical of nonswelling clays. The attraction forces cause aggregation of the clay unit layers into domains that break down on sodium saturation of the clay specimens. It is inferred that the physico-chemical factors responsible for the nonswelling character of the seawater-equilibrated bentonite specimens at pore salt concentrations below 1.1 gL-1 are inadequate to explain the nonswelling character of smectite-rich Ariake marine clays. The lower consistency limits of the Ariake marine clays in comparison to the nonswelling character, seawater-equilibrated bentonite specimens is attributed to a relative deficiency of interparticle forces in the Ariake marine clay.

Studies on compressibility and shear strength aspects are the concern of many investigators concerned with partly saturated soils. In soil engineering connected with partly saturated soils, there are no approaches connecting soil states and stress conditions. The present investigation is essentially a step in this direction. A generalized state parameter, identified with regard to material states is shown to be related to the compressibility and shear strength. The involved parameters are simple and normally determined in routine investigations. The advantage of this approach is that changes in soil states due to external stress conditions and the associated changes in strength can be examined particularly when different types of soils are involved.

Recycling plastic waste from water bottles has become one of the major challenges worldwide. The present study provides an approach for the use plastic waste as reinforcement material in soil. The experimental results in the form of stress-strain-pore water pressure response are presented. Based on experimental test results, it is observed that the strength of soil is improved and compressibility reduced significantly with addition of a small percentage of plastic waste to the soil. The use of the improvement in strength and compressibility response due to inclusion of plastic waste can be advantageously used in bearing capacity improvement and settlement reduction in the design of shallow foundations. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans MAL4-1, an isolate from Malanjkhand copper mines, India, was adapted to grow in the presence of high concentration (30 gL(-1)) of Cu2+, resulting in a 15-fold increase in its tolerance to Cu2+. While wild-type T. ferrooxidans MAL4-1 contained multiple plasmids, cultures adapted to Cu2+ concentrations of 20 gL(-1) or more showed a drastic reduction in the copy number of the plasmids. The reduction for three of the plasmids was estimated to be over 50-fold. Examination of the plasmid profiles of the strains adapted to high concentration of SO42- anion (as Na2SO4 or ZnSO4) indicated that the reduction in plasmid copy number is not owing to SO42- anion, but is specific for Cu2+. The effect of mercury on the plasmids was similar to that of copper. Deadaptation of the Cu2+- Or Hg2+-adapted T. ferrooxidans resulted in restoration of the plasmids to the original level within the first passage. The fact that the plasmid copy number, in general, is drastically reduced in Cu2+-adapted T. ferrooxidans suggests that resistance to copper is chromosome mediated. This is the first report of a selective negative influence of copper ions on the copy number of plasmids in T. ferrooxidans.

Chalcogenide glasses with compositions Ge7.5AsyTe92.5-y (y = 20, 40, 45, 47.5, 50, 52.5, 55) and Ge10AsyTe90-y (y = 15, 20, 22.5, 35, 40, 45, 50) have been prepared by the melt-quenching technique. The amorphous nature of these glasses has been confirmed by X-ray powder diffractometry. The thermal stability of these glasses has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The compositional dependence of the glass transition temperature, T(g), the crystallization temperatures, T(c1) and T(c2), and the melting temperature, T(m), are reported. The glass-forming tendency, K(gl), and the activation energy of crystallization, E, are calculated. The activation energy decreases with increasing tellurium content for both sets of glasses.

A newly developed and validated constitutive model that accounts for primary compression and time-dependent mechanical creep and biodegradation is used for parametric study to investigate the effects of model parameters on the predicted settlement of municipal solid waste (MSW) with time. The model enables the prediction of stress strain response and yield surfaces for three components of settlement: primary compression, mechanical creep, and biodegradation. The MSW parameters investigated include compression index, coefficient of earth pressure at-rest, overconsolidation ratio, and biodegradation parameters of MSW. A comparison of the predicted settlements for typical MSW landfill conditions showed significant differences in time-settlement response depending on the selected model input parameters. The effect of lift thickness of MSW on predicted settlement is also investigated. Overall, the study shows that the variation in the model parameters can lead to significantly different results; therefore, the model parameter values should be carefully selected to predict landfill settlements accurately. It is shown that the proposed model captures the time settlement response which is in general agreement with the results obtained from the other two reported models having similar features. Seismic design of reinforced soil structures involves many uncertainties that arise from the backfill soil properties and tensile strength of the reinforcement which is not addressed in current design guidelines. This paper highlights the significance of variability in the internal stability assessment of reinforced soil structures. Reliability analysis is applied to estimate probability of failure and pseudo‐static approach has been used for the calculation of the tensile strength and length of the reinforcement needed to maintain the internal stability against tension and pullout failures. Logarithmic spiral failure surface has been considered in conjunction with the limit equilibrium method. Two modes of failure namely, tension failure and pullout failure have been considered. The influence of variations of the backfill soil friction angle, the tensile strength of reinforcement, horizontal seismic acceleration on the reliability index against tension failure and pullout failure of reinforced earth structure have been discussed.
