Tungsten oxide thin films are of great interest due to their promising applications in various optoelectronic thin film devices. We have investigated the microstructural evolution of tungsten oxide thin films grown by DC magnetron sputtering on silicon substrate. The structural characterization and surface morphology were carried out using X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The as deposited films were amorphous, where as, thin films annealed above 400 degrees C were crystalline. In order to explain the microstructural changes due to annealing, we have proposed a ``instability wheel'' model for the evolution of the microstructure. This model explains the transformation of mater into various geometries within them selves, followed by external perturbation.

The study deals with the breakup behavior of swirling liquid sheets discharging from gas-centered swirl coaxial atomizers with attention focused toward the understanding of the role of central gas jet on the liquid sheet breakup. Cold flow experiments on the liquid sheet breakup were carried out by employing custom fabricated gas-centered swirl coaxial atomizers using water and air as experimental fluids. Photographic techniques were employed to capture the flow behavior of liquid sheets at different flow conditions. Quantitative variation on the breakup length of the liquid sheet and spray width were obtained from the measurements deduced from the images of liquid sheets. The sheet breakup process is significantly influenced by the central air jet. It is observed that low inertia liquid sheets are more vulnerable to the presence of the central air jet and develop shorter breakup lengths at smaller values of the air jet Reynolds number Re-g. High inertia liquid sheets ignore the presence of the central air jet at smaller values of Re-g and eventually develop shorter breakup lengths at higher values of Re-g. The experimental evidences suggest that the central air jet causes corrugations on the liquid sheet surface, which may be promoting the production of thick liquid ligaments from the sheet surface. The level of surface corrugations on the liquid sheet increases with increasing Re-g. Qualitative analysis of experimental observations reveals that the entrainment process of air established between the inner surface of the liquid sheet and the central air jet is the primary trigger for the sheet breakup.

We present a low power gas sensor system on CMOS platform consisting of micromachined polysilicon microheater, temperature controller circuit, resistance readout circuit and SnO2 transducer film. The design criteria for different building blocks of the system is elaborated The microheaters are optimized for temperature uniformity as well as static and dynamic response. The electrical equivalent model for the microheater is derived by extracting thermal and mechanical poles through extensive laser doppler vibrometer measurements. The temperature controller and readout circuit are realized on 130nm CMOS technology The temperature controller re-uses the heater as a temperature sensor and controls the duty cycle of the waveform driving the gate of the power MOSFET which supplies heater current. The readout circuit, with subthreshold operation of the MOSFETs, is based oil resistance to time period conversion followed by frequency to digital converter Subthreshold operatin of MOSFETs coupled with sub-ranging technique, achieves ultra low power consumption with more than five orders of magnitude dynamic range RF sputtered SnO2 film is optimized for its microstructure to achive high sensitivity to sense LPG gas.

The intention of this note is to motivate the researchers to study Hadwiger's conjecture for circular arc graphs. Let η(G) denote the largest clique minor of a graph G, and let χ(G) denote its chromatic number. Hadwiger's conjecture states that η(G)greater-or-equal, slantedχ(G) and is one of the most important and difficult open problems in graph theory. From the point of view of researchers who are sceptical of the validity of the conjecture, it is interesting to study the conjecture for graph classes where η(G) is guaranteed not to grow too fast with respect to χ(G), since such classes of graphs are indeed a reasonable place to look for possible counterexamples. We show that in any circular arc graph G, η(G)less-than-or-equals, slant2χ(G)−1, and there is a family with equality. So, it makes sense to study Hadwiger's conjecture for this family.

A unit cube in k dimensions (k-cube) is defined as the Cartesian product R-1 x R-2 x ... x R-k where R-i (for 1 <= i <= k) is a closed interval of the form [a(i), a(i) + 1] on the real line. A graph G on n nodes is said to be representable as the intersection of k-cubes (cube representation in k dimensions) if each vertex of C can be mapped to a k-cube such that two vertices are adjacent in G if and only if their corresponding k-cubes have a non-empty intersection. The cubicity of G denoted as cub(G) is the minimum k for which G can be represented as the intersection of k-cubes. An interesting aspect about cubicity is that many problems known to be NP-complete for general graphs have polynomial time deterministic algorithms or have good approximation ratios in graphs of low cubicity. In most of these algorithms, computing a low dimensional cube representation of the given graph is usually the first step. We give an O(bw . n) algorithm to compute the cube representation of a general graph G in bw + 1 dimensions given a bandwidth ordering of the vertices of G, where bw is the bandwidth of G. As a consequence, we get O(Delta) upper bounds on the cubicity of many well-known graph classes such as AT-free graphs, circular-arc graphs and cocomparability graphs which have O(Delta) bandwidth. Thus we have: 1. cub(G) <= 3 Delta - 1, if G is an AT-free graph. 2. cub(G) <= 2 Delta + 1, if G is a circular-arc graph. 3. cub(G) <= 2 Delta, if G is a cocomparability graph. Also for these graph classes, there axe constant factor approximation algorithms for bandwidth computation that generate orderings of vertices with O(Delta) width. We can thus generate the cube representation of such graphs in O(Delta) dimensions in polynomial time.

Assembly consisting of cast and wrought aluminum alloys has wide spread application in defense and aero space industries. For the efficacious use of the transition joints, the weld should have adequate strength and formability. In the present investigation, A356 and 6061 aluminum alloys were friction stir welded under tool rotational speed of 1000-1400 rpm and traversing speed of 80-240 mm/min, keeping other parameters same. The variable process window is responsible for the change in total heat input and cooling rate during welding. Structural characterization of the bonded assemblies exhibits recovery-recrystallization in the stirring zone and breaking of coarse eutectic network of Al-Si. Dispersion of fine Si rich particles, refinement of 6061 grain size, low residual stress level and high defect density within weld nugget contribute towards the improvement in bond strength. Lower will be the tool rotational and traversing speed, more dominant will be the above phenomena. Therefore, the joint fabricated using lowest tool traversing and rotational speed, exhibits substantial improvement in bond strength (similar to 98% of that of 6061 alloy), which is also maximum with respect to others. When a high velocity gas jet is introduced into a packed bed a cavity is formed. The size of the cavity shows hysteresis on increasing and decreasing gas flow rates. This hysteresis leads to different cavity sizes at same gas flow rate depending on the bed history. The size of cavity affects the gas flow profiles in the packed bed. In this study the cavity size hysteresis phenomenon has been modeled using discrete element method along with turbulent gas flow. A reasonable agreement has been found between computed and experimental results on cavity size ysteresis. The effect of various parameters, such as nozzle height from the bed bottom and packing height, on the cavity size hysteresis has been studied. It is found that inter-particle interaction forces along with gas drag and bed porosity play an important role in describing the cavity size hysteresis. The injection of gas flow allows the particles to go to an unconstrained state than they were previously in, and their ability to remain in that state, even under decreased gas drag force, leads to the phenomenon of cavity size hysteresis. XML has emerged as a medium for interoperability over the Internet. As the number of documents published in the form of XML is increasing there is a need for selective dissemination of XML documents based on user interests. In the proposed technique, a combination of Self Adaptive Migration Model Genetic Algorithm (SAMCA)[5] and multi class Support Vector Machine (SVM) are used to learn a user model. Based on the feedback from the users the system automatically adapts to the user's preference and interests. The user model and a similarity metric are used for selective dissemination of a continuous stream of XML documents. Experimental evaluations performed over a wide range of XML documents indicate that the proposed approach significantly improves the performance of the selective dissemination task, with respect to accuracy and efficiency.

The electron temperature structure in a weakly ionized plasma is studied allowing the degree of ionization to vary across the shock wave. The values of the electron temperature and the downstream equilibrium temperature obtained with variable ionization are less than those for frozen ionization. The electron temperature rises sharply behind the shock for variable ionization while a gradual increase is predicted by frozen ionization.

The water-gas shift (WGS) reaction was carried out in the presence of Pd and Pt substituted nanocrystalline ceria catalysts synthesized by solution combustion technique. The catalysts were characterized by powder XRD and XPS. The noble metals were found to be present in ionic form substituted for the cerium atoms. The catalysts showed highactivity for the WGS reaction with high conversions below 250 degrees C. The products of reaction were only carbon dioxide and hydrogen, and no hydrocarbons were observed even in trace quantities. The reactions were carried out with different amounts of noble metal ion substitution and 2% Pt substituted ceria was found to be the best catalyst. The various possible mechanisms for the reaction were proposed and tested for their consistency with experimental data. The dual site mechanism best described the kinetics of the reaction and the corresponding rate parameters were obtained.

The viscosity of five binary gas mixtures - namely, oxygen-hydrogen, oxygen-nitrogen, oxygen-carbon dioxide, carbon dioxide-nitrogen, carbon dioxide-hydrogen - and two ternary mixtures - oxygen-nitrogen-carbon dioxide and oxygen-hydrogen-carbon dioxide - were determined at ambient temperature and pressure using an oscillating disk viscometer. The theoretical expressions of several investigators were in good agreement with the experimental results obtained with this viscometer. In the case of the ternary gas mixture oxygen-carbon dioxide-nitrogen, as long as the volumetric ratio of oxygen to carbon dioxide in the mixture was maintained at 11 to 8, the viscosity of the ternary mixture at ambient temperature and pressure remained constant irrespective of the percentage of nitrogen present in the mixture.

Temperature-time characteristics of tungsten filaments heated electrically under constant voltage in vacuum have been analysed. The analysis is carried out over the temperature range 300-2500°K, taking into account the actual variations with temperature of the various parameters involved, as reported by Jones and Langmuir (1927). The analysis leads to the conclusion that the temperature-time relationship is exponential throughout the range. The time constant is shown to be proportional to the diameter of the filament and T f-4.2 where Tf is the final temperature of the filament. The results of the analysis are applied to derive the voltage variations (continuous and discrete types) required to keep the transient current within specified limits during the rapid switching on of filaments as met with in high power thermionic valves.

A study of compression waves produced in a viscous heat-conducting gas by the impulsive start of a one-dimensional piston and by the inpulsive change of piston wall temperature is made using Laplace Transform Technique for Prandt1 number unity. Expressions for velocity, temperature and density have also been obtained using small-time expansion procedure in this case. For arbitrary Prandt1 number solutions have been developed using large-time expansion procedure. A number of graphs exhibiting the distribution of the fluid velocity, temperature and density have been drawn.
