We have prepared a new nanocomposite polymer electrolyte using nanoparticles of hydrotalcite, an anionic clay, as the filler. Hydrotalcite has the chemical composition [M-1-x(2+) M-x(3+) (OH)(2)](x+) [A(x/n)(n-)center dot mH(2)O] where M2+ is a divalent cation (e.g. Mg2+, Ni2+, Co2+,etc.) and M3+ is a trivalent cation (e.g. Al3+, Fe3+, Cr3+, etc.). A(n-) is an anion intercalated between the positively charged double hydroxide layers. The nanoparticles of [Mg0.67Al0.33 (OH)(2)] [(CO3)(0.17)center dot mH(2)O] were prepared by the co-precipitation method (average particle size as observed by TEM similar to 50 nm) and were doped into poly(ethylene glycol) PEG (m.w.2000) complexed with LiCIO4. Samples with different wt.% of hydrotalcite were prepared and characterized using XRD, DSC, TGA, impedance spectroscopy and NMR. Ionic conductivity for the pristine sample, similar to 7.3 x 10(-7) S cm(-1), was enhanced to a maximum of = 1.1 x 10(-5) S cm(-1) for 3.6 wt.% nanoparticle doped sample. We propose that the enhancement of ionic conductivity is caused by percolation effects of the high conductivity paths provided by interfaces between the nanoparticles and the polymer electrolyte. Mycobacterial spheroplasts were prepared by treatment of the glycinesensitized cells with a combination of lipase and lysozyme. They were stable for several hours at room temperature but were lysed on treatment with 0.1% sodium dodecyl sulfate. The spheroplasts could be regenerated on a suitable medium. Fusion and regeneration of the spheroplasts were attempted using drug resistant mutant strains ofM. smegmalis. Recombinants were obtained from spheroplast fusion mediated by polyethylene glycol and dimethyl sulfoxide. Simultaneous expression of rccombinant properties was observed only after an initial lag in the isolated clones. This has been explained as due to “chromosome inactivation” in the fused product.

Dodecylsulphate-intercalated zinc hydroxysalt, Zn-5(OH)(8)(DS)(2)center dot mH(2)O delaminates to give monolayer colloidal dispersions in alcohols such as 1-butanol and ethylene glycol. The extent of delamination and the stability of the colloidal dispersion are comparable to those of layered double hydroxides. The solvothermal decomposition of the colloidal dispersion of the hydroxysalt in ethylene glycol yields a bimodal ZnO having a nanotubular structure decorated with nanosheets. Computer-modelling studies on the modes of binding of the three guanosine monophosphate inhibitors 2'-GMP, 3'-GMP, and 5'-GMP to ribonuclease (RNase) T1 have been carried out by energy minimization in Cartesian-coordinate space. The inhibitory power was found to decrease in the order 2'-GMP > 3'-GMP > 5'-GMP in agreement with the experimental observations. The ribose moiety was found to form hydrogen bonds with the protein in all the enzyme-inhibitor complexes, indicating that it contributes to the binding energy and does not merely act as a spacer between the base and the phosphate moieties as suggested earlier. 2'-GMP and 5'-GMP bind to RNase T1 in either of the two ribose puckered forms (with C3'-endo more favoured over the C2'-endo) and 3'-GMP binds to RNase T1 predominantly in C3'-endo form. The catalytically important residue His-92 was found to form hydrogen bond with the phosphate moiety in all the enzyme-inhibitor complexes, indicating that this residue may serve as a general acid group during catalysis. Such an interaction was not found in either X-ray or two-dimensional NMR studies.

Crystals suitable for high resolution X-ray diffraction analysis have been grown of the 29,774-Da protein, xylanase (1,-4-beta-xylan xylanohydrolase EC 3.2.1.8) from the thermophilic fungus Thermoascus aurantiacus. This protein, an endoxylanase demonstrates the hydrolysis of β-(1-4)-Image -xylose linkage in xylans and crystallizes as monoclinic pinacoids in the presence of ammonium sulphate buffered at pH 6·5, and also with neutral polyethylene glycol 6000. The crystals belong to space group P 21 and have cell dimensions, a = 41·2 Å, b = 67·76 Å, c = 51·8 Å; β = 113·2°.

Electrolytes based on polyethylene glycol (PEG, mol.wt.8000) and LiCl of compositions, (PEG)(x)LiCl, x=4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 40, 60, where x is the O/Li ratio, were prepared by solution casting from methanol solutions. FTIR studies indicate that the ether oxygens of the polymer chain participate in Li+ ion conduction. The presence of a salt-polymer complex that melts around 190 degrees C was evidenced by DSC measurements for the electrolytes with compositions x<12. The highest conductivity was obtained at the composition x=10 which was attributed to the presence of a mostly amorphous compound. NMR measurements indicated two regions of motional narrowing, one attributable to the glass transition and another to translational diffusion.

Cationic ionenes that bear electron-rich 1,5-dialkoxynaphthalene (DAN) units within the alkylene segment were allowed to interact with different types of electron-deficient, acceptor-containing molecules in an effort to realize intercalation-induced folding of the ionenes; the collapse of the chains was expected to occur in such a way that the donor and acceptor units become arranged in an alternating fashion. Several acceptor-bearing molecules were prepared by the derivatization of pyromellitic dianhydride and naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride with two different oligoethylene glycol monomethyl ether monoamines. This yielded acceptor molecules with different water solubility and allowed the examination of solvophobic effects in the folding process. UV/Vis spectroscopic studies were carried out by using a 1:1 mixture of the DAN-ionenes and different acceptor molecules in water/DMSO solvent mixtures. The intensity of the charge-transfer (CT) band was seen to increase with the water content in the solvent mixture, thereby suggesting that the intercalation is indeed aided by solvophobic effects. The naphthalene diimide (NDI) bearing acceptor molecules consistently formed significantly stronger CT complexes when compared to the pyromellitic diimide (PDI) bearing acceptor molecules, which is a reflection of the stronger pi-stacking tendency of the former. AFM studies of drop-cast films of different ionene-acceptor combinations revealed that compact folded structures are formed most effectively under conditions in which the strongest CT complex is formed.

We demonstrate that the structural and optical properties of a sol-gel deposited zinc oxide thin film can be tuned by varying the composition of the sol, consisting of ethylene glycol and glycerol. A systematic study of the effect of the composition of sol on the mean grain size, thickness, and defect density of the zinc oxide film is presented. About 20% glycerol content in the sol is observed to improve the quality of the film, as evaluated by X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence studies. Thus, optimizing the composition of the sol for about 60 nm thick ZnO film using 20% glycerol resulted in the zinc oxide film that is about 80% transparent in visible spectrum, exhibiting electrical resistivity of about 18 Omega cm and field-effect mobility of 0.78 cm(2)/(V s). Two series of cholesterol-based cationic gemini lipids with and without hydroxyl functions at the headgroups possessing different lengths of polymethylene -(CH2)(n)-] (n = 3, 4, 5, 6, 12) spacer have been synthesized. Each gemini lipid formed stable suspension in water. The suspensions of these gemini lipids in water were investigated using transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential measurements and X-ray diffraction to characterize the nature of the individual aggregates formed therein. The aggregation properties of these gemini lipids in water were found to strongly depend upon the length of the spacer and the presence of hydroxyl group at the headgroup region. Lipoplex formation (DNA binding) and the release of the DNA from such lipoplexes were performed to understand the nature of interactions that prevail between these cationic cholesterol aggregates and duplex DNA. The interactions between such gemini lipids and DNA depend both on the presence of OH on the headgroups and the spacer length between the headgroups. Finally, we studied the effect of incorporation of each cationic gemini lipid into dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine vesicles using differential scanning calorimetry. The properties of the resulting mixed membranes were found again to depend upon the nature of the headgroup and the spacer chain length.

Conformational features and supramolecular structural organization in three aryl biscarbonates and an aryl biscarbamate with rigid acetylenic unit providing variable spacer lengths have been probed to gain insights into the packing features associated with molecular symmetry and the intermolecular interactions involving `organic' fluorine. Four structures but-2-yne-1,4-diyl bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenylcarbonate), 1; but-2-yne-1,4-diyl bis(4-fluorophenylcarbonate), 2; but-2-yne-1,4-diyl bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenylcarbamate), 3 and hexa-2,4-diyne-1,6-diyl bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenylcarbonate), 4 have been analyzed in this context. Compound 1 adopts a non-centrosymmetric ``twisted'' (syn) conformation, whereas 2, 3 and 4 acquire a centrosymmetric ``extended'' (anti) conformation. Weak intermolecular interactions and in particular those involving fluorine are found to dictate this conformational variation in the crystal structure of 1. A single-crystal neutron diffraction study at 90 K was performed on 1 to obtain further insights into these interactions involving `organic' fluorine.

A genomic library was constructed from a HindIII digest of Azospirillum lipoferum chromosomal DNA in the HindIII site of pUC19. From the library, a clone, pALH64, which showed strong hybridization with 3' end labeled A. lipoferum total tRNAs and which contains a 2.9 kb insert was isolated and restriction map of the insert established. The nucleotide sequence of a 490 bp HindIII-HincII subfragment containing a cluster of genes coding for 5S rRNA, tRNA(Val)(UAC), tRNA(Thr)(UGA) and tRNA(Lys)(UUU) has been determined. The gene organization is 5S rRNA (115 bp), spacer (10 bp), tRNA(Val) (76 bp), spacer (3 bp), tRNA(Thr) (76 bp), spacer (7 bp) and tRNA(Lys) (76 bp). Hybridization experiments using A. lipoferum total tRNAs and 5S rRNA with the cloned DNA probes revealed that all three tRNA genes and the 5S rRNA gene are expressed in vivo in the bacterial cells.

Surface flashover characteristics of solid spacers in a rod-plane configuration have been investigated in SF6, at pressures to 400 kPa, for switching impulse voltages to determine the effect of spacer, spacer materials and polarity of applied impulses. The effect of spacer material on the flashover voltage is not significant. For negative polarity impulses, the influence of the spacer is also insignificant. But for positive polarity impulses, at pressures < 200 kPa, the spacer efficiency becomes > 1.0. On the other hand, at pressures > 200 kPa, the presence of spacer drastically reduces the flashover voltage of the system. At about atmospheric pressure also, the spacer efficiency in air has been found to be > 1.0, with the same electrode geometry.

The photorearrangement of benzyl phenyl ethers and methyl phenoxyacetates was investigated in methanol and in complexes with cyclodextrin in both the solid state and aqueous solutions. Irradiation in cyclodextrin media leads to a large change in product distribution with a very significant ortho selectivity different from that found in methanol where the reaction is non-selective. For meta-substituted ethers and phenoxyacetates, an impressive regioselectivity between the two ortho-rearranged isomers is observed and this is significantly enhanced by increasing the substituent chain length which acts as a spacer to induce a tight fit between the host and the guest. The observed results are rationalized on the basis of specific orientations of the unsubstituted and meta-substituted ethers and phenoxyacetates in the cyclodextrin cavity.

Hyperbranched polyesters based on 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid and its derivatives were prepared by self-condensation of the corresponding ester under standard trans-esterification conditions. The spacer segment length that connects the branching points was systematically varied by starting from the appropriate ethyl 3,5-bis(omega-hydroxyoligo(ethyleneoxy))benzoate. The thermal properties of the hyperbranched polyesters were studied using DSC, and they have been compared with those of the linear analogues prepared from the corresponding p-hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives and also with the molecularly ''kinked'' analogues prepared from the meta isomers. These hyperbranched polyesters were also terminally functionalized by using a potentially mesogenic 4-butoxybiphenylcarboxylic acid derivative in an attempt to prepare novel hyperbranched liquid crystalline polyesters. This was achieved by copolymerization of the AB(2) monomer with the mesogenic A-type capping unit. These polymers were found to be amorphous and did not exhibit any liquid crystalline phases, probably due to the random distribution of the mesogenic segments on the polymer framework, making it difficult to both crystallize and form mesophases.

We describe in this paper the synthesis and characterization of a new layered phosphate, MoOPO4 . 2H(2)O (I), and its intercalation chemistry. The phosphate I, crystallizing in a tetragonal structure (a = 6.375(7), c = 7.80(1) Angstrom, and Z = 2) similar to that of VOPO4 . 2H(2)O, has been synthesized by the reduction of MoO2(HPO4). H2O (II) using ethylene glycol in an CH3CN medium at similar to 60 degrees C. Interestingly, I could be readily oxidized back to II using Br-2 in CH3CN at room temperature. Considering the close structural relationship existing between I and II, it is likely that the reduction and oxidation of the phosphates proceed by a topotactic mechanism. I is a novel layered host intercalating a variety of organic bases such as n-alkylamines, pyridine, and aniline, mainly through an acid-base interaction. Unlike VOPO4 . 2H(2)O, I does not exhibit reductive intercalation reactivity.
